Re: [Drakelist] TR7 20m Issue

2009-06-16 Thread Steve Belcher

For what is is worth,

MY TR-7 did almost that same thing a few months ago. I primarily use 160
80, however decided to bounce up to 20. The display would not lock, there
was no receive. I too switched though all the bands, they worked, but
returning to 20 it still wouldn't lock. I also ran through the bands using
the remote VFO, 20 remained dead.

Powering the rig on and off had no effect.

Other then knowing that I didn't have a fully functioning radio, I wasn't
really troubled. However, next time and since that time, when I checked, 20
is just fine.. I have basically shrugged my shoulders and will worry about
if it becomes a permit issue or other bands start to fail too.

Keeping the list active, thanks to all who contribute!

Since it seems the list is in the summer doldrums.. I'll throw something
out there...

About two weeks ago I found time to hop on the radio.. While tuning
around 20m the band went dead silent (think unplugging the antenna) and
the digital display lost the leading 1 (so instead of 14.150 it was
4.150). I switched through all of the other bands and they were fine
(display displayed properly and noise level was consistent with the band
conditions) but when I switched back to 20m it was still screwed up. I
turned off the radio (waited for the fan to spin down) and when I turned
it back on everything was normal.
Has anyone seen this behavior before and should I be worried about it or
wait until it happens more often?

Re: [Drakelist] TR7 20m Issue

2009-06-16 Thread wb4hfn

The TR7 has a low and high frequency VCO.   The low frequency VCO is for 20
meters and below, the high frequency VCO is for the 15 and 10 meter band or any
frequency tuned by those bands.    Since the TR7 only fails on 20 meter band
that could be caused by the VCO not locking to frequency at the high end of its
range. The problem could be as simple as a lower than normal voltage from
the power supply.  Other problems would include a low frequency VCO problem or
improper alignment which could have drifted with age.    Its also possible the
band switch is dirty, the band select  encoding from the band switch is not
switching properly.    It also possible to have a bad  translator board  not
properly inturpting the enc ode range, but that usually effects more than just
one band .

Re: [Drakelist] TR7 20m Issue

2009-06-16 Thread Garey Barrell

Steve -

The VCOs often fail to lock at the high end of their range because of
the 24 VDC DC-DC converter power supply. The two E cores of the
converter are merely glued together, and quite a few have come unglued
at least partially, reducing the efficiency of the supply and lowering
the 24V. This voltage is used to steer the PLL, and a low voltage
limits the range covered by the PLL.

The 24VDC regulated voltage is on Pin 2 of the Power Supply board, which
is the one right behind the front panel Drake logo with the row of
trimpots across the top. Be careful to not disturb those pots,
especially the one closest to the right side of the radio. Which is why
it's a good choice to measure that voltage on the connector at the
bottom of the card rather than trying to poke around from the top.

IF the voltage is low, carefully press in on the front half of the
transformer core to see if the voltage comes up. IF that core moves at
all, and/or the voltage does come up, you'll need to remove that card
and re-glue the two core halves together. Again, _watch out for the
pots_ !!

[Drakelist] FS three MS7 speakers P 75 phone patch

2009-06-16 Thread Drakedude
I have three spare MS7 speakers available.

All work like they should,no sticky paint. All look excellent, except one
of the three has a spst switch installed in bottom of cabinet towards
front,I suppose was used with phone patch (to mute speaker). It is
really not noticable unless you look for it. Easily removed, you'll just
have a spare hole in cabinet bottom.

$90.00 shipped CONUS for either of the first two, $75.00 for the one
with the switch installed (shipped CONUS)

Exc. comdition P 75 phone patch, one knob missing aluminum insert

$30.00 shipped CONUS

$250.00 shipped if you want all three MS7s and P 75

 Thom,

I'll throw in my 2 cents. I don't post very often, but I have a
separate Drakelist folder in my Outlook Express that automatically catches

all the postings and I read them every single day. The list already
helped me fix a TR-7 and I'm thankful for the list and archives. It's a
