Re: [Drakelist] T-4XB Dial - White Diffuser Material
In my previous resonse regarding the white diffuser replacement I probably was not clear regarding the link I posted and the product made by EZ Quilting by Wrights. They make a mylar sheet that is 12" x 18" that is used for pattern making. This mylar sheet comes in various colors and is excellent for making both the blue filter and white diffuser replacements. One sheet can make several. I was shown this by a fellow ham who has refurbished several Drakes and replaced the filters and diffusers. I used it on a recent B-Line project and it works great. If you go to this link look at the white mylar pattern material for $3.99. http://www.simplicity.com/p-1470-no-melt-mylar-template-12-x-18.aspx Bill, nm4k On Sun, Aug 8, 2010 at 4:51 PM, Bill Jackson wrote: > Greetings to the Group, > > I picked up a Drake T-4XB at a local hamfest that has a cracked white dial > diffuser. OK. Having looked at Ron's manual, it's not. The mixing scheme is the same as that used by Standard during the 1970s for some of their portable and mobile radios. Try a product called Tinted Template Plastic EZ Quilting by Wrights P.O. Box 398 West Warren, MA 01092-0398 I have a sheet of this in Blue and White that make good replacements. I think you can find them at Hobby Stores or Craft Stores. [Drakelist] T-4XB Dial - White Diffuser Material
Greetings to the Group, I picked up a Drake T-4XB at a local hamfest that has a cracked white dial diffuser. I still have a couple of the blue filter replacement kits from WA9TGT, but those kits did not include the white diffuser. I see that KG9BV is now selling the blue filter replacement kits including the white diffuser, but email quires to his published address have gone unanswered. Does anyone have a suggestion on where to obtain some of the white plastic material that is suitable for this application? Re: [Drakelist] Clear up the confusion
Bob - Looking at your photo again, I'm assuming the cap at the lower right is the one you are concerned about. Are you sure it's 'blown'?? They are coated with wax, and when heated the wax tends to accumulate on the lowest point, and is much thicker and has that 'brown' color. It' VERY unusual for a disc ceramic to fail unless it's physically damaged. Also, that one is on the lower RF side of the feedthrough, meaning it shouldn't see much if any RF over and above the AC filament voltage. That is a 'garden variety' disc ceramic cap, 0.1 uF, and the 'Z5V' code means +10° to +85° operating range, and +20 / -80% capacitance change over that range. Interesting that yours seems to be marked 'backwards', i.e., +80 / -20%. The most common is 'Z5U' which is a +20 / -55% variety. The absolute value isn't all that important. The voltage isn't marked, but most disc ceramics of that type/era were 600V DC unless marked otherwise. These days they are typically lower voltage, 50 or 100V DC, which would still be more than high enough. Any of the usual suspects, Mouser, Digikey, Allied, etc. should have plenty. Even better, if you have any sort of electronics surplus stores left, they would have boxes of them. Hamfests are also a good source. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B, C-Line& TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs ROBERT SMITH wrote: Hope I'm not getting into trouble posting this again. This goes to the RFC 2 then to one of the 3-500Z filament. It has to have high amperage thru it I would image, plus what voltage? Tube info says 5 volts on the filament. So what I would like to know where I could fine a replacement for the blown one and a couple extras. Part number ect. I have enclosed a picture of the blown cap. Re: [Drakelist] Clear up the confusion
Uh-oh... Is this a pattern?? :-) Are certain that this arrangement is "original" and not a 'fix' applied later? Interesting photo, if original, perhaps Drake wasn't completely happy with Sprague 80P3s after all! These look much more robust. Are there any markings on the white feedthroughs? They look almost like ceramic feedthroughs, i.e., just a bolt with insulation around it, in which case Drake came to the same conclusion I did. Is the 'blown' one one of the tan disc caps on either side? Yes, the function is to keep the RF Drive signal inside the input shielded area of the amp. The caps work against the inductance of the filament choke, L2. 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B, C-Line& TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs ROBERT SMITH wrote: Hope I'm not getting into trouble posting this again. Re: [Drakelist] l4b feed through caps
Karl - Yep, those are the Sprague 'HyPass' caps. They are rated for 20A, which is a little disconcerting, but there seem to be few failures. SSN doesn't have them any more though. The current limitation would be the size of the internal conductor, and the attachment method at each end. I suspect the conductor just runs warm, which may be what has caused the limited failures. The other thing of interest would be the voltage drop across it, lowering the applied filament voltage, which may not be a bad thing! 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 4-B, C-Line& TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs Karl Corder wrote: Found the boxes that the feed through caps came (miracle), anyway the boxes read Sprague by pass capacitor 80P3 .1 MF 600 WVDC 516 .0693-000 .
