Re: [Drakelist] Question regarding TR4
Kevin, You will likely find that the schematic you have in your manual probably doesn't match the rig you have. Also, the manuals changed slowly, if at all, during the life, only the schematics changed. Garey will have all the schematics in the CD. One question though, why would you want to "re-tube" a whole transceiver?? More than likely most of those in the rig are good tubes, and it seems a waste to change them, plus, who can tell that your "new" ones are any better than the originals??? They have to be NOS or old unless they are Russian or Chinese. Also, the rig was aligned with those tubes and will require a COMPLETE alignment after re-tubing. I just think it is easier to use your new tubes as test replacements to see if they fix a particular problem. My .02 worth, probably not worth that much. 73, Don, WB5HAK___ Drakelist mailing list Drakelist@zerobeat.net http://mailman.zerobeat.net/mailman/listinfo/drakelist

[Drakelist] Question regarding TR4
While I wait for my repair CDs to arrive I have found something I need some information on. I am in the process of retubing the TR4 I have and I went down the list of tubes in the voltage chart and ordered all of the tubes. That I think is my first mistake because when I took the cover off and got ready to install the tubes the first one was a 6BZ6 tube I come to find out there are none in use on this particular radio. Am I safe to assume that they made a revision either before this radio or afterwards and went to the 12BA6 tubes which I am finding are getting hard to find. My radio shows that tubes V13, V12 and V11 are all 12BA6 and it has arrows pointing to all three tubes. The serial number on the radio is 23567 so if anyone can tell me what year that is I would appreciate it. Re: [Drakelist] Spam
Actually depending on how tightly the ISPs are [not] watching e-mail headers, it could be as simple as a spammer found a valid e-mail address for the drakelist and the address of the drakelist itself. Then the spammer just forged headers. Look up "joe job" for the ultimate insult of your personal e-mail via forged headers. I had it done to me once. Had all kinds of hate e-mail for sending them "male assistance" products. First, thanks to all that replied. Second, I NEED HELP!! Most (like 99%) of my attempts to post/respond to this list are being blocked by something called "SPAMCANNIBAL". Re: [Drakelist] Low power out on 15 meters ( 10 meters too)
Bob - This is typical deterioration of the PA tubes. Certainly there are other possible causes such as a weak Driver tube and myriad other 'possibilities'. But most often it's PA tubes. If subbing new tubes in the PA and/or Driver does NOT result in full power, then it's time to investigate further. Start by checking voltages, especially in the PA. Screen and Cathode voltages are particularly important and should be nearly equal on both tubes. It's also possible that the alignment of the Driver stage has 'slipped'. These trimmers are often at or near minimum capacitance, resulting in little or no tension on the adjustment. Vibration, mechanical shock, temperature excursions etc., can all disturb these adjustments. They are very 'sharp', so very little movement will drastically affect the output power. I always 'seal' the two top bands with a little clear nail polish to help hold them where they belong. CAUTION! Do not use an uninsulated alignment tool on the trimmer caps. Even a momentary short to the chassis will destroy R44. If still no luck, check back! 73, Garey - K4OAH Glen Allen, VA Drake 2-B, 2-C/2-NT, 4-A, 4-B, C-Line and TR-4/C Service Supplement CDs Robert Fish wrote: Hi Guys, I was up checking out activity on 17 meters today. There wasn't much. Surprise surprise, but it reminded me of a problem my T-4XC has. I have been ignoring this issue for a while now because the bands have been so dead. I tuned up the transmitter so I could call CQ on 17 meters today and I barely got 60 watts out. On 10 meters, it's more like 50 watts. It is any band that uses those two band switch positions 21.0 and 28.5 MHZ. I get over 100 watts on all the other bands, quite a bit more than a hundred on 80 meters. I suppose I could tune her up on 40 meters and then write down some power levels at various places along the transmit chain and then go back and do it on 10 or 15 meters and narrow it down to a section that way. I would expect the higher bands to be somewhat lower power, but not that much, or am I wrong. Is there anyplace I should start looking.
