Re: [Drakelist] Sherwood mods

2011-12-31 Thread AirRadio
What an interesting selection of replies, I am not into drilling holes in
equipment at all, so all the mods will be reversable, some are just common
sense like changing out caps and the power board, however I do keep all the
'bits' just in case I wish to sell the radio, but this one is a keeper. I have
had a great deal of focusing on my collection recently and am only keeping a
select few items that I enjoy using, some are Collins some are Drakes, my
BC-610E, the rest are various collectables which are used for short time only,
however this R4C is a nice radio to use but it does have some issues all of
which have been addressed here in some view or another, I actually fall into
both camps of keep original and make sensible mods, I did the AGC mod to my
early KWM-2 and it transformed the radio into a very useable and fun radio to
use, the R4C is a great radio and there are quite a few of them still in
service, testiment to the great engineering of the day so I do not feel so
guilty for doing some small changes, but I wanted to get a flavour of what can
be expected and everyone here has given their opinion on what is good and bad,
actually not so much bad as good I feel.
Anyway great group and many excellent replies, Thank you,
73 & HNY,
Max

I am thinking about doing the full works Sherwood mods on my R4-C. Which are

good for all frequencies however 160M is where I want to go.

[Drakelist] AGC on R4B

2010-10-25 Thread AirRadio
My R4B which I was refurbing for this W/E CQWW has a couple of issues, firstly
the power supply intermittently hums, I can see that the Cap is loose on the
power supply board and the resistor has been badly replaced so is probably the
problem there, is there an upgrade board available as this one has lost some
tracking, the other is the AGC in fast and slow there appears to be a certain
amount of distortion and cracking on speech peaks, is this normal or do I have
a problem here, don't want to investigate this if is a normal occurance.
thanks in anticipation,
Max

both perform OK just didn't want to run any risks here, these tubes are not

[Drakelist] L-7 Linear 10m etc

Thanks for all the help and advice on this, it would appear that my pencil

One thing is puzzling me, the Load control sticks out further from the panel

carefully cut the extra from the shaft to even them up, maybe there is a reason

noticed that the slug on T6 grid coil has been wound in somewhat, now I assume
this has been done by some misguided person as I am thinking all of these
should be the same height? I refered to the manual and it says about various
dot colours, cannot see any coloured dots so maybe mine are no dot?
Also resistor r90 47k and the diode cr19 on V4 driver were both fried, any

[Drakelist] R-4C PTO bearings - adjustment?

2009-12-22 Thread AirRadio
Right then, so far this R-4C is now working, I have managed to find the
transformer, xtals and NB board, thanks for all those who responded, what a
great group this is :-), the radio works (mainly alignment) thanks to the
xtals from my other 4C, however the PTO bearings are very loose so the knob
moves up and down a lot more than it should, I have removed the unit and taken
a quick look, now before I strip and damage it are there any procedures I
should be doing in order to remove the play in the bearings. I took the can off
the rear and looked inside for an adjuster but non seems to be there.

item on the mods lists what is worth doing and what is not, I can see some very
obvious advantages but don't wish to break the bank with this, I want to use it

Re: [Drakelist] MN2000 on AM

2009-09-28 Thread AirRadio
I run a BC-375 (350w+ carrier) through a Johnson Kilowatt Matchbox, similar
power ratings with no problems, most of this older kit is very
conservatively rated I would have no worries running 350w of AM through the
MN-2000, it will cope with 150w with ease. By the way listen for Europe
AM'ers on 3705, when you get up and running. If you ran that sort of power
through a modern atu with an internal balun you will run into problems.

Greetings!

I was wondering what folks think about running AM with an MN-2000 tuner.
The power would be around 100-150 watts, but of course the duty cycle is
100% on this mode. I would imagine that as long-winded as I am I could
be key-down for five to seven minutes . Would the MN-2000
hold up?

Thanks!

this reflector, great to have so many opinions and thoughts on this subject, I
think after due consideration I will be looking for a TX-4B and an R-4B the
choices were made on the following, most of the 'extras' come built in,
prettier looks, just seem more appealing and will go well with my L-4B (B
version), more valves, thus easier for me to work on and probably to get spares
too, some transistors are getting hard to find, not so with most valves.
Anyway when I find them I will almost certainly be asking more questions,

Right then, this will I am sure occur lively debate, I have a couple of
L-4B (B&C versions) linears and MN-2000's that I regularly use with 'other'
radios, it has occured to me at various times to maybe get a tx & rx of Drake
manufacture to go with them, however there are a great variety to choose from
and not being well versed with Drake radios other than the amp and atu, I am a
little lost as to what I should look for. Basically I would like to have
something that covers 160-6m inc warc cw/ssb now the TR-6 will do the 6m but is
it good and do I need other bits to go with it, maybe some mods or other is
required? the 160-10m side then a seperate tx and rx maybe better than a
transceiver? please guide me on this as I have heard one or two of the Drake
receivers give even modern radios a run for their money. Obviously power units,
speakers, mics, Sherwood mods etc need to be considered too.

On my L-4B the fan switches off when the power is disconnected (normal), has
anyone made a system using the original components to keep the fan running for

extend the tube life, trouble is with the L-4B it has a 110v fan that operates
through the filament transformer to reduce the 220v to 115v. in order to make
it run on you have to have the filaments on which defeats the object a bit and
doesn't the psu get hot after a 4 hour contest, I know where I can put my
'Chinese takeaway' next time hihi. ( I have put a fan on that of course), 73 Max

Make sure you have the power jumpered for the correct
voltage in the RF Deck. I you have the filament
transformer jumpered in the RF deck for 120VAC and you
have the Power Supply jumpered for 220VAC and you
apply 220VAC you will burn up the filament transformer
in the RF Deck you will get a very loud hum in the RF
deck for a short period of time then lots of smoke.

Kevin, Snow is a funny white stuff that comes from the sky during the winter
cold months, When my wife (Filipino) first came to this country, UK, she had
never seen snow in her life, during her first winter here it snowed a lot, I
took her to the local shopping centre, during our walk around the centre I
became aware there was water trailing along behind here. I casually asked
why she was 'leaking' and discovered she had collected both coat pockets
full of snow as she wanted to take it back home and keep it. She also asked
what they were going to do with all the dead trees around as all the leaves
had fallen off !
Thankfully I also have all my tube/valve radios here in the shack to keep me

Jim, Thanks for the note, Yes I fully understand the carrier input etc, what
I meant to say and put it badly was by how much was 100w too much, I did
guess that 25-30w input was probably about right. maybe much less. I have a
Collins ART-13 which I use regularly on AM nets and wondered how much I
would have to attenuate it to run a sensible output with the Drake. Maybe it
is not worth it but possibly if the Drake puts out a significant carrier, I
was aiming for roughly 300w carrier maybe that is pushing the L-4b too hard,

Yes, 100 watts is too much. You need to understand the PEP-to-carrier
ratio

involved with AM. The manual states that with 100% modulated AM (I assume
this to mean full-carrier, both sidebands), the transmitter should be
adjusted to produce 500 watts DC plate input in the amplifier. This
translates to 250-300 watts carrier output. If you are using a Drake
controlled-carrier AM transmitter, adjust everything per manual specs and
you

should be OK, but in any case do not exceed the maximum PEP ratings of the
amplifier or the maximum legal limit allowed by your licence, whichever is
lower.

I'm sure one of the gurus who lurk here will come up with a more complete
answer...
