Ted,

[drakelist] L-4PS hum

2008-04-15 Thread Joe Roth
My L-4PS has developed a hum (buzz). When it's cool and I set the amp at low
tap (CW) it's quiet. It begins to buzz on the high voltage position. Later when
it warms up a while, even the low voltage tap causes it to buzz (hum).
I know it's the transformer. What is my best option? I do not dare try to
rewind it. New transformers are expensive but its that the best way to go?
I hate to throw good money after bad and buy a used transformer from another
L-4PS.
Suggestions? I'm sure many of you have been down this road before.

I can say dittos to that too. I have an Orion (and love it). I have no
intention to sell it as the RX and TX are outstanding. That said, I also have
the C-line and enjoy operating those just as much. The RX on the R4C with
Sherwood's mods and tuning is right up there with the Orion except in the worst
of contest conditions or nasty 75m situations. It's more than just the numbers
when I operate the Drakes.
My FT-101F and IC-746PRO take a back seat to the rest.

You are right Lee. I sold my Orion because all I used were the Drakes. The
Orion was a nice radio
but not the pleasure to listen to and operate like the Drakes. I have had
Drake Twins in the shack since 1970 and you can't beat them.

Actually I think the Sherwood R4C hears as well as the OII.
Don't get me wrong... I still like using the OII but, WOW these OLD BOYS do

Oh one more thing... I don't think if the OII developes a problem I will be

After having my current antenna removed due to a
proposed house addition,
I am ready to Install another antenna, but would like
for it to be
a "optimum antenna "so I don't have to keep
experimenting
ie. fooling around with them.

Would really like Drake users recommendations,
opinions, comments
for a all band (160 through 10 meter) Antenna i.e.
low VSWR,
broad band, house and neighborhood friendly, and be
able to take output from a TX4 LB4 MN2000 set up.

Previous experience has been: not much luck with
verticals However
it could have been my fault as I never had more
than 8 radials,
and no attention to decent grounding.

A Recent excellent antenna presentation at the
Rochester Radio club
talked only on Verticals this was due to their
low angle of radiation.
Several verticals were mentioned specially the
AV-18HT, However
 no had one.

I know this isn't an antenna net but it's the only net
I use and Drake
folks on this net seem to be very knowledgeable.

Hello Drake pros!

I have a question I am just curious about.
My T4XC SN is 26595. Although it's a later SN batch, it's not in the group of the very latest run built. What were the last Drake production changes to this radio after this unit was built?

I found great info about my R4C by VE3EFJ but not for the T4XC. Maybe there are details on the web somewhere that I didn't find.

Okay gang. I have 68 logbooks I need to sell. About 40 of them are "unclaimed" by others who ordered but did not pay. I hope some of you can help me out.

As you know, they are a hit and I'm happy to hear so many of you are pleased.

The price is still $3.75 each. USPS shipping for the lower 48 varies by the number of books but you can get a good idea by going to www.wc4r.com/drakelogbook.htm. I won't hold up your order if your calculation is a little off; that's okay.

Here is a bonus: Buy more than 10 books and shipping will be on me via UPS!

PayPal is best since this is first come, first served. Checks and Money Orders are fine but you should email me to confirm it is on the way so I can hold your books.

My email is [EMAIL PROTECTED] All info you could need is on the web page listed above.

What a great forum at Dayton! Good to meet up with you all.

By now most everyone should have their logbooks. I have a few more going in the mail today for those checks I just received while I was away.

Since the USPS was not nice to some of your packages, please send me an email direct. I will be more than happy to "fix" their error by sending another 1, 2, or 5 books to you. I DO HAVE EXTRAS.

Actually I have 70+ extra logbooks. Some folks did not pay, and some did not sell at the forum at Dayton. They will be available for sale next week. I'm holding off to make sure all the ones sent have arrived safely.

The price will not change. The payment info remains the same (see www.wc4r.com/drakelogbook.htm).

You did it folks! The Drake log book is going to print thanks to all of you who committed to the pre-orders. 388 orders to date is close enough.

The price remains at $3.75 per book plus shipping.

PLEASE CHECK YOUR ORDER AT http://www.wc4r.com/drakelogbook.htm NOW.

If you do not see your call sign or if there is any other error, please let me know right away, today, not a week from now.

Shipping will be by UPS or USPS, whichever costs least to your location. I will advise each of you by email soon of the exact total amount via email. Payment can be made by check, money order (I'm good in any database) or by PayPal (account [EMAIL PROTECTED]).

Only two (VE3AX and VE3ES) asked for me to bring their books to Dayton with me. I will have many extras at the Dayton Hamvention DRAKE FORUM for sale (and a few for prizes too). The price for the books at Dayton will be at least $4 each.

Again, thank you all for making this project a success.

[drakelist] Drake logbook reprint -Last call

2007-03-29 Thread Joe Roth

"Joe Roth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
This is a repeat message from before. So far, we are only half-way there. More orders are needed. Please talk it up with you friends. Forward this email. Discuss it on the Drake nets. It MAY be possible to print a smaller quantity but the price will increase some. Here it is folks. I have been able to put together a
"Commemorative Edition" of the official Drake logbook of years past. RL
Drake, LLC has approved this printing. This is NOT an
exact duplicate of any one version but a combination of all. The format
remains the same and the front cover that was chosen was that of the
Drake C-Line. The inside front cover is the same as they were all originally printed with fill-in lines for your station info. The first few pages and last few pages contain a collection of all the
previous logbook pages. The originals had information about Drake and
their plant as well as advertisement on the various model lin! es.
Instead of one page, like the original, I copied all the versions so
this edition will have all varieties under one cover. The cover of the logbook is a nice 60# weight cover stock with a
textured, satin finish similar to the original. I'm using an off-white
color stock to keep the vintage look. The inside pages (10
pages here) are black print on a good 70# weight offset text paper.
Here too I used a natural color to preserve the vintage nature. I am asking for advance orders (no payments yet) to measure the serious
interest in printing these logbooks. The cost to you will be $3.75 each
plus shipping. I will use UPS shipping through my office so it will be
at a discounted shipping rate. This is being sold at my cost. PayPal
will be available but will have a processing charge. I must have a
total print run of 500 issues to make this offer. Email your requests to [EMAIL PROTECTED], NOT to this group or my email
attached to this notice. I must hear from you by MARCH 29 (that's in
10! days) to put you on the order list. PAYMENT DEADLINE is April 30,
2007. I will have some that I will bring to the Dayton Hamvention (Drake
Forum) in May. You can also pick yours up there to save on shipping. Sorry if this was long but I wanted to be sure you all knew how this
turned out. Email any questions to my inbox address. Please commit to
your orders that you request as I will have to bear the up front cost
of nearly $2000 to pull this off. Order status can be found at http://www.wc4r.com/drakelogbook.htm 73 Joe, WC4R

[drakelist] Drake logbook reprint

2007-02-11 Thread Joe Roth

"Joe Roth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
Thank you for everyone who has offered a copy of a logbook for me to examine.
So far I have two versions being sent to me on loan. I will examine them for consideration for a reprint. I will also have to contact Drake in case there is a copyright and if so, if they would allow me to reprint an edition to be sold at no-profit.
If this should work out, my 'plan' is to offer ONE type as a combination version with B-line, C-line and 7-line gear pages. This plan might change based on interested members' response. Please understand that orders will have to be requested in advance of the print as the larger the quantity, the lower the per piece price. I will print some extras and take them with me to the Dayton Hamfest for sale. I hope I can get this all done before Dayton. I will still have to pay my employer for the cost of the printing in hopes to recover it based on your promises of good faith.
Special thanks to WB4HFN for his insight and tips!
I will report my updates here on this list only; stay tuned.

Re: [drakelist] log book on e-Bay

Interesting thought Thom.
I manage a large local printing company in Virginia. I never saw a Drake logbook but if someone sent one to me, I could see what it would take to duplicate it. I could post the cost on the list. I control the estimating and sales cost so I could sell it to members near cost.
Just a suggestion. I would gladly return the sample logbook to the sender.
Maybe there is an interest in a "reprint".

Well, wouldn't be nice if folks on this list got together and had some
reprinted?

If I had one(I don't), I go to the printer and see how much.

[drakelist] Bad tubes in L4B

2006-11-24 Thread Joe Roth

"Joe Roth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
I suspect I have a week pair of 3-500Z's in my L4B. Tell me if you agree.

I restored an L4B and rebuilt the power supply. PS voltages check out fine.
I drive it with a T-4XC at 90 watts. On 40m, RF output is 800w. Plate amps shows .5. Plate voltage is at 2000 on TX (2500 at rest).

The grid bothers me as the meter pins past full scale. If I drop the RF drive to around 45-50 watts, the grid current drops to 300ma.
The amp is running on 120 VAC for now.

Thanks for your tips!

Happy New Year all Drake gurus! I seek your vast insight on the L4B.

I am rebuilding my L4B's power supply. I have heard of some replacing the
stock transformer with a Peter Dahl type which gives higher plate voltage.
The goal is to bring the amp's RF output to 1500w.

Has anyone done this mod/upgrade? Is it worth the bother? Opinions, please.
BTW- My present transformer is fine, I believe.

For all of those who emailed me with an interest in the replacement L4 PS
board... see below.
Email Mike direct with your questions or for your "order/reservation" ASAP.
You can view his web site to see photos of his quality work. I bought his
AC-4 upgrade kit and it was great.

Again, he is now at 19 orders. Six more needed.

right now we are trying to get 25 interested people in ordering the pcb. the
pcb is $25 +$4 shipping

This one board replaces the two that are in the L7/L4 power supplies. it
contains, both diode strings, bleeder resistors and high voltage capacitors.

I can email a photo of one of the assembled prototypes.

so here's the deal.

I need 25 people to confirm an order with a credit card or money order
I need 25 to do a first run

if there is enough interest, we will do the run of pcb, if not, then nothing
will happen

When the 25 number is reached, I will charge your cards and then the pcb
should be here within 3 weeks.

if there is enough interest, I will offer a kit of parts including the pcb
for $100+$8 shipping

but first we need the pcb ordered.

[drakelist] L4B help

2005-11-07 Thread Joe Roth

"Joe Roth" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> made an utterance to the drakelist gang
--
I was fortunate to find an L4B to complete my Drake C-line station. The
tubes are supposed to be fairly new. The power supply just had diodes
replaced. I carefully (slowly) turned the amp on and everything came quietly
to life. Those 3-500Z's are the prettiest things next to a Christmas tree!

Here is the trouble. I tried to drive it with 20 watts (T4XC). The grid
current is off the scale. A mere 10 watts drive will bring it to full scale.
Plate voltage and amps read zero no matter what. The amp's T/R relay engages
but no RF out at all. I tried this on 20 & 40 meters with the same result.

What should I check next gang? Bad tubes? Bad L4-PS?

Thanks!!

Since I got the bug to restore older tube gear, I now have the need for a
copy of an older ARRL Handbook. It will really help in some of the
situations I've run in to. For starters, I am looking for an edition around
1974-1978. Another edition that would be good is around 1957, but that may
be a tough one.

Anyone have one they can give up or sell?

[drakelist] R4C low semsitivity

I have the R4C and T4XC pair. The receiver's sensitivity is much better when
I use the TX VFO on all bands. I also noticed my output power is better that
way on 10 meters. For example, ON 10 METERS I have 30 watts in the tune
position when using the R4C VFO but if I switch to the XMTR VFO, output
jumps to 100 watts. ON 75 METERS there is no ouput difference.

I've check all the cables and I use RG62 for the INJ cable. All check out
okay. Re-tubed and realigned both units last year (Sherwood mods to the RX).

Any ideas where to poke around?
Thanks gang!

This evening I was running the R4C and T4XC. I noticed when I used the XMTR
VFO instead of the RCVR VFO, the RX signals were about 3 s-units better.
Noise level was higher too. Tuning around, the RX was more sensitive using
the T4XC's VFO.
I assume something has become weak in the R4C. Any ideas where to start

I refurbished a C-line a little while ago. Now I wish to try to figure when
they were made.
I have a parts list in the R4C manual dated April 1975. For the T4XC, I have
two tags dated 1/6/76 and 1/4/77. The tag dated 1976 is a square red tag --
is it the QC tag? All units were owned by a "T. Keller". The Serial #'s are
26595 (T4XC) and 25953 (R4C) and 1316 (C4). My best guess is mid-1976. What
do you think?

run in to?
(Tubes are all new and radio was just aligned; mic is a D104).
Thanks!

[drakelist] R4C xtal bank bad

2005-02-03 Thread Joe Roth

I've added a lot of xtals to my R4C. I began to use position 11 which is now
in the 3 (bottom most) row. The entire row for positions 11-15 will not
work. The receiver acts as if the xtal sockets are empty. The xtal works
fine in other positions. I've swapped all combinations around and I know
there is a problem with the row. I looked at the obvious solder joints on
the switch and traced the connections of 3 wires going to the underside of
the chassis. Everything appears to be okay.
I now need to get in to it deeper and trace some lines with the VOM. Does
anyone have suggestions to narrow things down?

Does anyone have a source for the black 4 Line screws? I know someone on
the list organized a group purchase a few years ago but I was too late to
be included.

[drakelist] Need knob for R4C

2005-01-31 Thread Joe Roth

I'm in the same boat as Dick, PA2DW. One of the bar knobs on my R4C
(on/off/mode) also split and I need a replacement. I called Caltronics and
they do not stock them (stock #50-133) and will only order in quantity of
500 at $0.92 each.
Does anyone out there have a knob I can buy from you?
Thanks!
