2016-11-06 Thread Sindre Torp
That sounds like a very good idea to me! I hope that somebody will pick up the
idea and start the work to realize it.

I’m not sure if I gonna make it to come over for The Hamvention next year. But
the hotel is booked, just in case…. J

It would by the way be my 15th Hamvention.

Would anyone be interested in having a Drake Collectors booth at Dayton? The
Collins folks have one.

We could use it as a meeting place as well as a place to show off equipment
plus sell gear.

[Drakelist] Drake Virtual Museum - info

2012-02-11 Thread Sindre Torp
Fellow Drake Enthusiasts,

The R.L. Drake Virtual Museum http://www.dproducts.be/drake_museum/ is for the
time being not updated. The reason for this is that I have no access to the
server after my museum-partner passed away last Christmas.Hopefully the ISP who
hosts the files will help me. I'm in contact with them.

I have decided to build up a NEW Drake Virtual Museum from scratch. It will
contain a lot of new pictures and info in addition to what found in today's
museum.

The NEW R.L. Drake Virtual Museum is being launched page by page. You may
follow my work at the new webiste here: http://www.drakemuseum.com

It's under construction so there's not much there yet, but stay tuned !
Please observe that links in the menu is activated when the pages are ready to
be presented.

You are invited to come with suggestions and material for the museum pages.

I hope to meet many of you at The Dayton Hamvention in May !

[Drakelist] Off topic: Do you want to try remote?

2012-01-25 Thread Sindre Torp
Hi everybody,
This is off topic, however it's slightly related to Drake.

I'm looking for someone who wants to try remote operation. Well my reason for
this was in the first place selfish: I want primary to be able to listen to and
join the Drake nets on 80m (and 40m?)

I'll provide you with almost all equipment that will be needed in both ends,
except for any simple wire antenna (80 and 40, W3DZZ, Windom etc.), internet
connection (cableconnection from router to remotebox) and maybe a powersupply
at your QTH (or a club-QTH), .
You will be able to operate a TS-480 (or maybe IC-706MkIIG) remotely and
located in Norway.
No computers are involved. Only a couple of boxes from www.remoterig.com
(provided by me)

And I must be able to operate a TS-480 (provided by me) at yours or maybe a
club's QTH remotely from Norway.

Please contact me off list directly to sindt...@online.no if this sounds
interesting for you to discuss further, or for your club or anybody you know.

Thanks for your attention!

See you at The Drake Forum, Dayton Hamvention in May.

I began some weeks ago the work with a new and complete updated version of The

here. This work will be forced from now on.

We welcome you to Dayton, the Dayton Hamvention, and the Drake Forum to be
held on Friday, May 16, at 230-345, in Room 2. The main speaker will be Rob
Sherwood who will talk about some of the leading edge technology that Drake
implemented decades ago and that others have started implementing in recent
years. Other presentations will provide Tips and Tricks, as well as an Ask The

[drakelist] Drake AN/RT-88-GRC

Hello Drake-friends!

I was recently informed about that there was a Drake AN/RT-88-GRC
transceiver!! This is a Drake TR5 transceiver and PS7 power supply in the
same cabinet, and it's army green.

The complete set is in a wooden box which is labeled AN/RT-88-GRC HF
Communications Transceiver. And the set consists of:

AN/RT-88-GRC transceiver with power
Vertical antennea with tuner
Control box for antenna tuner
Coax and antenna tuner cable
Manual

I don't know much about this set. My source bought 4 sets from a fellow that
had a Pawn shop. A guy loaned some money on them, but the radios were never
picked up. The Pawn shop was closed and the set were stored in a garage 12
years ago.

These might be the one's sold out of Miami to a South American group after
some repacking.

That's all I know. Do any of you know anything more about the set

Pictures will be added to the Drake Virtual Museum later. I was offered 2
sets, and I bought them both of course.

But you may already now take a look at a couple of pictures of the green TR5
set on my web-site:

Hi all,

I don't have any schematics for the the RP500 or RP700.
But I opened a sealed box with a RP700 today. No schematic inside, so
therefor I opened the RP700 !

There's a small printed circuit board with 2 ceramic disk capacitors, 1 coil
with 5-6 turns, 6 diodes of the same kind and 2 other very small diodes
(most likely).

There's no gas discharge surge protector.

I've never actually seen one of these, but I suspect that it may be
nothing more than a gas discharge surge protector in a box with a couple
of connectors on it. These were added to the TR-7 after a while, and
probably the R-7 as well.

The one used in the TR-7 was a CG90L, available from Mouser for about
$4. These have 1 pF capacitance so wouldn't have any effect on an
HF/VHF receiver.

If you get any real information, I'd be interested in it!

Hi everybody,

I was on the 14.238 group meeting for the first time tonight, and I really enjoyed it.
I'll try to be there as often as possible.
I think it will be rather difficult to run the meeting next Saturday. I assume the
bands will be rather crowded because of CQ WW DX-contest on SSB.

I hope to meet many of you on 14.238.

Thanks and enjoy the week-end!

Re: [drakelist] Serial Number Fun with the TR5, OR......

2004-10-01 Thread Sindre Torp

Hello everyone on The Drake List,

I have two TR5 transceivers.

Their serial numbers are 001130, and 110 (hundred and ten).

The serial #110 TR5 has the serial number printed directly on the rear side. This is
from the preproduction serie. The serial # consist of only three digits: 110.

But the serial #001130 TR5 has the serial printed on a decal on the rear.

I should have posted this a couple of months ago. :-)

 - Serial Number Fun with the TR-5 -
   -or-
Down to the Sea in Drake's
---

A few weeks ago a mention of the TR-5 on the
list sparked an idea, or quest, or maybe I was
just bored at the moment. Since the popular
thinking was just over 500 TR-5's were built, I
thought it might be fun to find out how many I
 could account for.

So I polled the two Drake
lists asking for serial numbers of TR-5's owned
by the members. The story about a large number
of TR-5's being lost at soon sea surfaced.
 (pun intended)

The story goes something like this:

Once Upon a time, (sorry couldn't resist)
the Drake company filled a large order
of TR-5's to the Government of South America.
Reported to be over 100 units, perhaps as
many as 200. The ship that was loaded with the
TR-5's was lost at Sea, sunk in bad storm.

I have heard variations of this, but the end
was the same, about 100 Brand New TR-5's
lost forever at the bottom of the Ocean.

A fellow Drake list reader remarked
that the story was true and had been confirmed.

Now I had a mission, would gathering serial
numbers reveal the missing units and shore up
the story. Clearly I thought that if a large
number of radio's were sent on one order
they would be consecutive serial numbers.

Early on I had received 8 serial numbers
from list users and had 5 more from WB4HFN's
Serial Number Web Page, plus my TR-5 for
a total of 14 good numbers. Not many but
it was a good spread from 1038 to 1506.
 (TR-5 production began at 1001)
Right away I noticed a large gap in the
numbers, nothing between 1167 and 1288!

Was this gap possibly the missing TR-5's?

A few more numbers came in the next day,
all outside the black hole of missing Drake's.

How clever I thought I was, Also this
might mean that there was only 400 or so
TR-5's left, making them even more rare.

Then it happened, Like a MOAB on target,
but this was the MOASN! And not just one,
the next day the gap was gone, 1207, then
1240 and if that wasn't enough 1232 arrived.

My Theory was Dashed on the Rocks!

Now I have 25 TR-5 serial numbers, and
from 1038 to 1514 the biggest hole is only
 48. This is with less than 4 percent known
to exist TR-5's but would indicate that a
large number in one group, such as the
missing 100 might not be missing at all.

I did do one more bit of looking for
information, Yes I even asked the
 R.L. Drake Company.

I sent an e-mail to John Kriner of the
 Drake Service Department.
 Here is his reply:

The boat sinking story is one I never heard, but this does not mean it
isn't true. I am forwarding your mail to Mr. Frost at Drake. Perhaps he
knows if the story is true.

 From Bill Frost:

I have to agree with John, I have never heard
of a large number of TR-5 being sold into
South America. In fact, I can't remember a large
number of TR-5's being sold to anyone.
The sales of the TR-5 were nothing like we had
 hoped.

I remember we sold several of the TR-4305
transceivers into South America to missionaries
etc. They liked the simplicity, the fixed channel
operation and the reliability. The TR-4305 was
basically a TR-5 without the VFO.

It would seem to me at this point that the story
of the missing TR-5's lost at sea is just that.
A story. Perhaps there is some truth to it,
but certainly not 200 or 100 or even 50 TR-5's.
Yes, I do realize that they wouldn't have to
be consecutive serial numbers, but one would
think that if the factory lost a boat load, they
would remember. Anyway it was fun to play the
 numbers.

Re: [drakelist] Drake 2B

2004-02-25 Thread Sindre Torp

Hi everybody,

I see that there have been a few postings regarding the 2-B with background in the
auctions on ebay recently.
The 2-B is a wonderful receiver to use, and I have quite a few Drake receivers and
transceivers to compare with. Actually, I do have them all ! And that include the
commercial ones too. Well, 2-B is not the best, but it's fantasic, having that time's
technology in mind.

And if you wonder who bought the 2-B and the 2-BQ, I can tell you that I did that. I
recently bought a NIB RV-3 vfo from the same seller. I've got that one already, and it
looks like it has been made today!

The ended auctions of the RV-3, 2-B and the 2-BQ can still be found here if you would
like to take a look:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=48709item=3078444065

I have by the way the 2-B and the 2-C serial no. 1 receivers too.

I'm going to have a slide presentation of Drake protypes and some other very rare
models at the Drake Forum that is taking place at the Dayton Hamvention in May. I hope
to see many of you there!

Enjoy your Drake radios!
