Re: r300 driver support for Hypermemory cards?
GhePeU wrote: And, secondly, do AIGLX or XGL work on such cards? The r300 driver works very well with XGL. I have an X700 mobility, and XGL works *beautifully*. Just recently, I've started to get good results ( ie no hard lockups ) with AIGLX - but with the new 'beryl' window manager, which is Quinnstorm's fork of compiz. As Roland pointed out, with only a 64 bit bus you're not going to get astounding performance, so you might see some issues with heavy use of compiz effects, but then again I don't think it will be all that bad. As a point of comparison, I've been using compiz with AIGLX on an integrated Intel chip at work ( in i845G ). It has no RAM of it's own, and can only see 'up to' 8MB of system RAM! It works fine with AIGLX - it's actually quite impressive. It's quite *unimpressive* with XGL - painfully slow. According this this page: http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/motherboards/article.php/10703_1141511__3 the i845G has a 64-bit memory bus ( if I'm reading it correctly ). So I'd say at least for compiz ( or beryl ) on AIGLX, your chosen Radeon should be sufficient. Also, avoid the Radeon Xpress cards like the plague. The memory controller is not supported with the open-source r300 driver, and ATI's proprietary driver locks hard when starting XGL. Dan - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Re: What can the FSF do to help?
John Sullivan wrote: The Free Software Foundation had listed http://r300.sf.net/ as a High Priority Project. We recognize that the lack of 3D video drivers for their specific hardware is one of the primary obstacles preventing people from running entirely free systems. The development status and location of that project has changed, and we would like to update our recommendation. We are interested in ideas for how we can help contribute to the project's development (and to the overall goals of performing 3D video drivers for free software operating systems). I'd like to hear any suggestions or feedback that the developers on the list have for what could be done. The FSF may be in a better position to lobby ATI / AMD to release more documentation, particularly for the cards which are completely unsupported, such as the Xpress cards. I'm quite satisfied with the progress being made on my particular card ( r300-based, Mobility X700 - it works great ). However without the ability to support later Radeon cards, a decent portion of future ( and some current ) users will be forced to use ATI's binary drivers. I'd therefore concentrate on these completely unsupported cards ( I believe initialisation of the memory controller is basically the only problem ). I've read on the unofficial ATI Linux forums that some guy who has access to more info under NDA has made patches to add support for these cards, but is being prevented from releasing them by ATI. Update on R300 driver? ( pinging Vladimir )
Just wondering if there has been any progress on the R300 driver. I recall Vladimir was having a go at it some time ago. I'm setting up a PC for my brother, and I'll pretty close to giving him my R350 and putting my R100 back in mine so I can play UT2004 without lockups and texture corruption etc. And then there's the issue of driver support when a new xorg X server is released that's not binary compatible with ATI's driver. It's just looking like the R100 is a better all-round choice. Hi all. Yes I know there is currently nothing that works. When that changes, I will gladly test whatever anyone has. [Dri-devel] UT2004 demo
Hi all. Just downloaded the UT2004 demo, and tried it out under XFree86-4.3.99.902. I'm pleasantly surprised. It runs quite nicely, and I can't spot any rendering bugs ( though I wasn't looking closely - I was more interested in shooting at things ). Anyway, congrats to all those responsible for the Radeon driver! One small issue I have is with the menu text. It's very blurry, and very hard to read. It looks a bit like the text has been shrunk to a very small size, and then blown back out to original size again. But it also just looks a bit ... 'blurry'. Has anyone tried UT2004 out yet, and if so, what card what version of XFree are you using, and do your menus display properly? Thanks! Dan --- SF.Net is sponsored by: Speed Start Your Linux Apps Now. [Dri-devel] Compile error
Hi all. Re: [Dri-devel] Tribes 2 Lockups: Help me pinpoint the problem...
Alexander Stohr wrote: I just set up a 2nd PC and ssh'd into mine and ran Tribes 2. My original post said that the lockups occur within 5 seconds of 3D rendering starting. That's not quite correct. The lockups occur only after I move the mouse (which moves the 3D scene around). But anyway ... /var/log/XFree86.0.log didn't move at all after the Tribes 2 game menu had loaded (ie nothing appeared before or after the lockup). dmesg was completely full of: [drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL! What can I do to get you some more info relating to this? Thanks in advance. Dan You can do this: Dont touch the mouse... use the keyboard. sounds hoaxing maybe, but isnt. But if the problem is related to the mouse coursor or alikes then it should not happen with the keyboards. I just dont know if your application does support keyboard inputs. Regards, Alex. Thanks Alex and others who have helped so far. I don't think it's directly related to the mouse. I have tried with direct mouse input on off (in the game) and also tried not touching the mouse at all. My PC locked hard as soon as I used the keyboard to move forward. The version of xfree86 I am currently using is the main DRI cvs trunk from 03-07-02. Note however that ALL texture and lighting installs (and all kernels) I have tried out so far have had the same problem, and I have been trying for a long time. Also I know it's not related to the new Mesa stuff because I had also been trying out the Mesa4 branch and not experienced this problem. dmesg is full of: [drm:radeon_freelist_get] *ERROR* returning NULL! Here is my xfree86 log (which didn't move between when everything was working and when the lockup occured; but I could still run commands from my remote box via ssh): XFree86 Version 4.2.0 (DRI trunk) / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6600) Release Date: 18 January 2002 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems. [Dri-devel] TCL lockups with Tribes 2
Hi all. I've been testing the latest TCL drivers recently merged into the main cvs trunk thing (sorry I don't quite understand cvs) with various 3D apps, and I'm getting lockups with Tribes 2, after about 5 seconds of 3D rendering (not enough to actually play anything). The lockups seem to be dependant on the time since rendering started more than anything else. I have tried various levels and with sound on / off. 3D screensavers Quake3 work fine, but I can't get any action from Tribes2. I have to ALT-SysRq (SUB) to sync, unmount and reboot each time. I am using a 1600XP Athlon with 256MB DDR Ram, on an Epox (8KHA+ or something like that) motherboard, with a Via KT266A DDR chipset and a 64MB DDR Vivo Radeon (and an SB Live 5.1). I have successfully run the Mesa4 branch with Tribes 2 without lockups, but have had the same problem with every TCL checkout I've tried (sorry I didn't report this earlier - I didn't think the TCL stuff was stable / complete enough to bother complaining about something like Tribes 2). I don't currently have another linux box here which I can use to log into this one and get any info (it that is at all possible) after a crash, but it someone thinks it will be handy, I'll get my friend's PC around here (I will need instructions).
