strongly supports professional development and provides funding for
staff to present their work at national conferences. Lafayette College
offers a competitive salary and generous benefits package as

Re: [Dspace-tech] Submission to be made public

2012-02-07 Thread emilio lorenzo

Hello Wilko
despite the possible risks of allowing not-identified users to deposit
into your repository, a possible aproach would be use SWORD-deposit. A
year ago, in a project we used the application EASY-deposit (developed
by Stuart Lewis, thanks again Stuart) to allow general users to send
materials to DSPACE. Easy-Deposit is deployed as a web app, and is your
task to provide access restrictions, if any..., although an
LDAP-integration is available

Another smart app of Stuarts allows using a mail-client to make
almost-depositsAnother possible direction of your investigations.

With easy-deposit, the users can be anonymous and the material is sent
in behalf the EASY-Deposit Application... Some drawbacks arise related
with destination-collections, metadata completeness, revision-workflow
and so on but in some particular scenarios, the benefits can
outperform the inconvenients.

thanks,

Emilio

My guess is that you need to set up a cron job to send out the notifications.
See

[Dspace-tech] maven problem, not proxy issue

2012-02-07 Thread Martin Musacchio
Hi all.

I'm stuck at the 'mvn package' part of the installation (dspace 1.8.1,
maven2=2.2.1-10) and it fails downloading the first file, claiming
network unreachable, 'Unable to download the artifact from any
repository', the usual.
I've searched the list and most people fixed this problem with the
proxy setting in the settings.xml file from the maven directory. Well,
this doesn't work for me. I'm actually in the same network from
another computer that doesn't even need a proxy setting! (both are
behind a firewall which automatically redirects requests to specific
ports to the proxy, so there's no need for the setting) Just to be
sure I tried the proxy setting anyway but it doesn't work.

Also I can access that first failed file with my browser and with
wget. It's a .pom file. Using curl it shows it to me in binary code
(I'm not sure if that matters or not). So it doesn't even look like a
proxy type problem.

Of course I also tried purging and reinstalling maven2, to no effect.

I'm running out of ideas...

Can anyone provide any help?

Thanks in advance

[Dspace-tech] streaming doc

2012-02-07 Thread Abhishek Raval
Hello All,

We are using DSpace 1.7.x for managing a repository. Currently, when
we try to 'View' the document, it opens up in a new Tab (if the file is
less than 10-12 MB) or it directly downloads the file (if the file is more
than 10-12 MB). We want Dspace to open the document in a new tab to view
everytime any body hits the 'View' button (independent of the file size)

Also, in the 1st condition, where it opens up the file in a new tab,
it doesnt stream the file page wise, all the pages are first loaded and
then we can view the pages. We would want to start viewing the first couple
of pages as soon as the file opens in the browser while the remaining pages
can take their time to load. same as a google doc.

Let me know how it could be done ?

it, just wanted to make sure I take the proper decision, since it's my
first project with DSpace :)

The problem I see with two dspace instances is the e-person sharing.
Basically, in order to use a single set of credentials, we would need to
deploy LDAP authentication to cover both instances and also Apache's
Basic Authentication (via mod_auth_ldap).

Read this document on auth
http://cadair.aber.ac.uk/dspace/bitstream/handle/2160/632/Module%20-%20User%20management%20and%20authentication%20options.pdf?sequence=3
and I think that would be the option, right?

Thank you,
Cristian

Hi, Christian, as Mark Wood has observed, many people have run into this
detail in the past. I would recommend that if it is your intention to
create a "dark" archive, that you would be better served to create a
non-public instance of DSpace--lock it down via controls either on your
servlet container, or controls in your proxy (Apache, Nginx, etc.), if
you're using one. This would give you much better control over the
materials in the archive, and you would not be relying on the DSpace
application to enforce your access rules.

Greetings,

We have submitted an item within a private collection (only
Administrators can see it). The problem is that the search function
returns the item, even if I am logged out (anonymous). But whenever I
click on search results, I get this message:

You do not have the credentials to access the restricted item
hdl:123456789/63 .
The selected item is access restricted and requires credentials to view.
Please login to access the item.

Even more than this, item bitstreams (word documents) are searched and
the item is returned if a match is found.

Up until now we had a look over the code (AbstractSearch.java) and since
Lucene indexes everything (which is normal), we need to override
performSearch() to handle security before returning the search results.
Before going this road, was anyone hit this issue?

Any help is greatly appreciated,
Cristian
