Re: [Dspace-tech] DSPACE version

2014-03-25 Thread Barnes, Hugh
Hi Monika

I think you have to ask if that's helpful to users, and the answer is probably
"no".

By my unsupported reckoning, this information is useful to technical people
only. A metadata element (generator) or a comment in the HTML source are where
I would look in the first instance for this info. (I was slightly surprised not
see it in the older versions but glad it is now implemented. I thought it was
standard practice.)

(And it's worth noting that you can see this more easily in Firefox from the
page by simply choosing "View Page Info" from its context (right-click) menu.
There's a list in the "general" tab under "Meta". That doesn't involve trawling
through HTML.)

If specific repository instances want to indicate they use DSpace (perhaps out
of gratitude to its producers), these are also options:

* behind a "Built with DSpace" (or similar) link, probably using a logo - a
brief page explaining that DSpace is used and which version, with links to the
project
* as a paragraph with version and link to the project on an already existing
"About" page - that's probably where I'd expect to find it as a non-technical
user.

Ultimately these are template issues, but it's worthwhile setting good examples
out of the box for sure.

Hope that's useful input.

Cheers

We restart our application stack (httpd, tomcat, postgres and handle server)
immediately prior to the start of each business day (Mon-Fri).

The timing is so that there are staff around to fix things if the restart

We're on linux, so we're using cron for this.

Re: [Dspace-tech] Java Heap Space Problems

2014-03-25 Thread George Stanley Kozak
Matt:

This is something that I have been struggling with for a long time. Going to
DSpace 1.8.2 and tomcat 7 seemed to help for a while. One thing that I found
that caused Java heap space errors was the solar statistics button on the
Community, Collection and Item pages. This isn't a problem on our test
machine, but only affects our production machine, so I am assuming that it is
somehow threshold related. We have a lot of records with a lot of downloads.
So, I removed the statistics buttons from the JSP pages and that solved a lot
of our problems, but now I seem to have a problem every Friday night and I need
to reboot tomcat.

My current setup for java heap is:
JAVA_OPTS="-server -Xms1024m -Xmx2048m -Xmn64m -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8
-XX:+UseParallelGC -verbose:gc -Xloggc:/dspace/dspace/log/gc.log
-XX:+HeapDumpOnOutOfMemoryError -XX:PermSize=1024m -XX:MaxPermSize=1024m
-XX:-UseGCOverheadLimit"

So, I expect that I will have to up my memory usage. I think this is a
creeping problem and I am not sure if this is fixed in DSpace 3.2 or 4.1.

[Dspace-tech] Creative Commons license link broken?

2014-03-25 Thread Bill Tantzen
Apologies, just giving a bump to a question I asked last week... So
far, no solution:

===

DSpace 4.1, XMLUI

I have enabled the creative commons step for a collection. Everything
seems to be working fine on submission. But when I view the full
record, in the "Files in this item" section and in the sub-section
entitled "The following license files are associated with this item",
the Creative Commons link refers to the page it is on instead of the
license bitstream. ( e.g. /handle/11299/12345?show=full ).

Is this a mis-configuration on my part, or bug?

Thanks for any hints!

[Dspace-tech] Uploading content from command line

2014-03-25 Thread X ch
Hi all,

We're trying to upload a lot of content to our DSpace from Alfresco. For
this, our guys are capable of extracting the data from the old
infrastructure, but we can't find a way to import all this content
automatically.

Our purpose is to develop a bash script or similar that would take each of
the files, add its metadata and upload it to DSpace, but we can't find a
step-by-step guide on how to achieve this, since we don't know what's the
full process of adding a document to the repository.

Can someone explain how would we do this, or some reference to a guide?

Thanks so much.
