My radio got wet during a flash flood, well it was under creek water
for a few hours. It was not on during at the time. As I expected it
doesn't work. Before I applied power to the radio I disassembled the
radio, cleaned the boards, connections, etc. and dried it using a
hair dryer for about three hours. I then allowed it to sit in the
open air overnight. I reassembled the radio and tried it and it
 still won't work.

Other than buying a new radio, any other suggestions I can try to
get the radio up and operational again?

 Your suggestions are appreciated!

First sign of life is the +5V supply voltage for the control head.
Measure each pin (as I can't recall which is the +5V) against ground and
if you see +5V, the regulator to power the control head which eventually
turns the radio on, has it's lifeline available. The regulator is on
regardless of the power switch, if the main fuses are OK.

I had one ID-800H which had this lifeline dead. There was no voltage
although the regulator was OK, as a 0-ohm resistor just before the
control head connector in the main chassis was burnt for some reason. It
had acted like a fuse, by design.

Next thing to check would propably be the power switch itself, as it
might not like water at all.

If you fail to get it working, I'm interrested to buy the radio for
spare parts!

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Debugging 23cm DD mobile connection back in 2004

2010-02-11 Thread Erik Finskas
I finally uploaded a video from our Dayton Hamvention roadtrip. There
was two ID-1's on board, mounted to the trucks of Jim N5MIJ and Bill
N5ZPR. Of course we needed a wireless internet connection between the
cars. There was a cellular internet access in another car, and they
shared the connection to Bill's truck via WIFI, and our truck was then
behind that WIFI connection.

We had the freedom to wonder around, did not have to stay in close
formation with the others as 23cm DD worked OK on the highway over
several miles, while WIFI needed a true closed circuit to work OK from
car to car...

Enjoy :)

Just to show off, we are now officially QRV on D-STAR with the famous
Nokia portaphone;

That is a Nokia RC58 PMR portaphone originally used in a MPT1327
trunking system, currently with a ham firmware.

As you can see the DV adapter board is just test wired to the radio but
in final installation it will be completely inside the radio unit.

 when cold.

Sounds great! Could you point us to a webpage or other information
source for your project?

In brief, the mode of operation is as follows. When cold both repeaters
are listening for valid GMSK or CTCSS/1750Hz respectively. Once that has
been received, the active repeater tells the other repeater to go into
Shutdown. This Shutdown state lasts for as long as the active repeater
is receiving/transmitting valid information and for a user definable
period afterwards to stop quick mode flipping. Once that period has
expired, the Shutdown repeater is brought back to life and the system is
 available for both modes again.

The only duplicate hardware in use are two Velleman K8055 boards, one
for each repeater, the USB audio fob and radio are of course shared.

Does the code include a sofware GMSK decoderencoder or does it require
a Satoshi board to perform as D-STAR air interface?

run a cut down version of XP and is extremely reliable.

Ah. Already subscribed to that and reading all posts with great

It's all done in software. The interface to the radio is the cheapest
sound card you can find, the lack of filtering is a plus, and some sort
of I/O board, the Velleman K8055 is favoured.

Is the IO for PTT COS or what? We use the CM108 chip with Thelinkbox,
a multi-protocol VoIP client, and we can use the 4bit GPIO on the CM108
for the PTT and other digital IO requirements. That could be propably a
good approach for you controller too, to get just a single wire from the
controller to a radio!

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] D-STAR international WorldNet?

2010-01-13 Thread Erik Finskas
Hi all.

Looking through the reflector NET-lists I fail to find a worldwide net
as a meeting point for users all around the world (except REF001C as the
megarepeater). D-STAR is growing and would need encouraging traffic to
fill the newly added repeaters or hot spots in places where D-STAR is
still in introduction phase. I partly can speak for my region for such.

Being bit unaware of how nets are moderated and controlled, I humbly ask
is there a place and need for such, and would there be some skilled
operators available to run such net? I can provide a high-bandwidth
reflector for the net, and propose it to be active weekly, having three
timeslots for the three main continent regions, US, EU and Asia/Pacific.

WorldNet could introduce D-STAR users, hot spot and repeater
installations worldwide.

What u say?

[DSTAR_DIGITAL] Nordic DPLUS reflector REF022

2009-08-07 Thread Erik Finskas
Hi all.

There is a new DPLUS reflector, REF022, freshly installed in the Nordic
region. It is ment to service the northern Europe and Scandinavian
region mainly with low latency, but others are welcome too.
The reflector is located in a Datacenter connected to ISP backbones.

The module configuration has been decided to be geographically split, so
that there can be regional modules with local language;

REF022 module A Finnish
REF022 module B Swedish/Norvegian/Danish
REF022 module C English/other.

I dare to put our dear neighbours to same module as they share common
language, I've stand next to them and they do understand each other,
thus they speak very differently :) The configuration can be changed if
need arises.

REF022 welcomes all DVDongle users and Node Adapter experimenters, there
are no limits of the usage other than to follow ham spirit and good manners.

Currently the reflector is in commissioning stage and is not yet open to
public other than RX only. It will become open for TRX in few weeks.

NO, I meant the European TRUST at dstareusers.eu is
running as a TRUST server exactly as k5tit does
 at dstarusers.org or something.

They have built a NEW TRUST server.

 That is the point.

Now others will build more, as every country should have one.

 That is the point.

I dont care which repeater belongs to which trust at this point.

We will also build another one in the US and another in Canada.

We DO NOT care about routing from EU trust to US trust and back.
That is not the point I am trying to explain here

Who are WE in this aspect? Why do you want to create numerous parallel
networks unvisible ro each other? You then fail to understand the whole
concept of D-STAR callsign routing.

The point is now we know how to create TRUST servers
for peoiple to enjoy and repeaters can belong to any
TRUST. Is is not any more one ONLY. You see what I mean.

And check this out, A dstar repeater can switch from one
TRUST to another TRUST in 5 seconds. That is the
 beauty of it.

If one goes down, there is another and another and another ...

Why dont you all join your your forces and start designing a next
generation trust system which has multiple instances for redundancy but
still acts like one so everybody could use it and enjoy a global D-STAR
network..

Re: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: IC-92AD Connector

2008-11-29 Thread Erik Finskas
They really should have thought of using some connector which is already
available and meets the required specs, waterproof, latching, etc. They are
widely available from reputable manufacturers and the RD costs are already
paid for. Now Icom designed one of their own and it most certainly is a
expensive part.

I can't see a proprietary connector as a cash magnet either.

What really is funny too, that a radio which is claimed to be waterproof, has a
hole in its 'hull' which is covered only with a rubber cap which pops off quite
easily. The DC-inlet, that is.

The 92 is ok to use in rain etc. but I really don't consider it waterproof. But
that is very ok as it would be difficult to work submerged anyway. The
ruggedness brings a bit of freedom how to throw the radio though :)

I'm not objecting to the use of that connector - though it would have
been nice if they'd used a readily available connector. It looks a
lot like a Hirose LF series, which isn't exactly cheap, but at $12
it's not bad and it's ruggedized and waterproof.

If I can get equivalent cables made in lower quantities and still sell
them for a lower price after paying for custom tooling, then I think
that's a pretty good sign that the price they're charging is excessive.

I think there could also be a market for a simpler cable that's not
threaded and waterproof. How often do you need a waterproof data
cable when you're using it with a laptop that's probably not waterproof?

Don't ask, the answer might be no. :)

The D-STAR logo does not seem to have (R) or (C) emblems which should be
there if the logo is internationally protected by copyrights or is
registered trademark.

IF it would be protected, there should be already quite good knowledge
of such, as for a official logo property of someone has usually also
graphical guidelines regarding the positioning, surroundings and
limitations of the usage. I've seen the D-STAR logo attached to several
other logos and backgroups, which are usually very no-no by the guidelines.

Re: [dstar_digital] Help with poor audio on Dstar System?

2008-08-24 Thread Erik Finskas
The audio sample clearly reveals that something is wrong. Significant
information below is that the problem occurs only with remote traffic, not
with local traffic which generally outrules local RF equipment failure.

I would look more closely the internet connection. Sounds like there is
substantial but not persistent packet loss at the internet link now and
then which distorts the incoming d-star datastream. The voice data is UDP,
which means that there is no proper way of making sure of the delivery of
each single audio datagram. I don't know has the gateway software any debug
features to reveal this kind of data loss, and if it does, there will
certainly be some indications of packet loss.

The case could be such, that when the peak data flow on the internet
connection reaches about 2/3 of its capacity, the audio UDP packets get
queued and not delivered to the gateway in time, or get delivered in
incorrect sequence and dropped. These are the usual causes for audio
problems when dealing with Voice over IP, which the traffic between d-star
gateways and reflectors looks like if not looked too closely.

The problem can be local LAN equipment related hardware issue, or truly a
capacity issue when your solution would be to prioritize the d-star gateway
traffic over the other traffic

Hopefully you willl get it fixed!
