Re: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: ID-800H vs ID-880H

2009-07-21 Thread Nate Duehr
The 880 also has a bigger display area/number of characters on
the screen at once which is a nice to have but not really
necessary feature.

The info that the 800 supposedly doesn't have one-touch
callsign programming is incorrect... pressing and holding down
the middle soft button below the screen while receiving a
transmission will temporarily copy the transmitting station's
callsign into the UR field in memory until the rig is moved to
another memory or tuned to another frequency. One-touch works
fine on the 800, and always has.

I own an 800 and have no real problems with it that the 880 would
fix... if that says anything. Haven't found anything the 880
will do that the 800 won't.

Both have pretty difficult user interfaces from reading the 880
manual, none of that really changed. The 2820 looks more
intuitive to operate, but for the fun-per-dollar ratio, the 800
was the way to go for me... before the 880 was released.

The decision between the 800 and the 880 however, is difficult
for a new buyer... it's really only a refresh of the 800, not
any great change to the overall design or operation, in my
opinion. In this economic climate, I'd save the $100 and plan to
buy the 2820 or the ID-1 later on, perhaps.

The 2820 is the best way to go if you want a buy it once, never
buy again mobile for D-STAR, I think. The ID-1 is a high-end
toy that is only justifyable if you have serious need for the
data capability or you're a big 1.2 GHz fan... I am, but still
can't justify $1000 radio just to play on 1.2 GHz right now...
maybe someday.

While I have not owned the 800H, I did compare the two before I
purchased the 880H. Here are a couple of the items that swung me
towards the 880:
1) Number of memories are significantly more (and the more the
better with DSTAR)
2) Third generation of DSTAR interface within the radio (much
easier to program / use on the fly, including one button call
programming)
.
3) Display - I just liked the 880H display more than the 800.
4) Free software to program it. (While the software is not real
intuitive, it does work).
Overall, I have been extremely happy with the 880H. With that
said, though, I think the 800 would work just as well on DSTAR
and analog - you really can't go wrong!
I hope this helps. If you have any questions, just let me know.

The reason I ask is that I'm contemplating getting into D-Star

If you're in the coverage of a javaARPSd equipped Gateway, the
800's D-PRS functionality will get your location to the Gateway
and out to the Net. Folks with 2820's and more advanced rigs
say they see my GPS data just fine.

Not sure if the advanced D-PRS features of the 880 are any
great shakes... if you can find something in those specific
features that you NEED, that'd be a different story, but the 800
and an attached GPS seems to work just fine for everything I've
ever tried to do with it for position/location information.

Neither rig has a way to display the direction or location of
OTHER D-PRS rigs, like the 2820 does. You have to hook a laptop
to the serial port and use software to RECEIVE other station's
location information with both the 800 and 880, I believe. The
built-in point to the other station feature is only in the
2820, AFAIK.

Re: [DSTAR_DIGITAL] Re: ID-800H Questions - Unable to run Chirp properly

2009-04-29 Thread Dan Smith
Hi Juergen,

if I understand you properly it means that I have to download a file
from the radio first and then start to modify it and upload the
updated file back to the radio again. Is this true?

That's correct. Since the ID-800H (like the rest of the mobile
radios) are clone-types, if I were to provide a way for you to create
a blank ID-800H file from scratch, programming your radio with it
would wipe out all of your other settings, which is probably not what
you want.

This would mean that I could not generate a new file from scratch as
I was trying to do (but without success).

Well, you can create a virtual radio file (with File-New), write a
bunch of memory information, and save it as a .chirp file. From that,
you can then import it into your radio's image when you clone it.
This will let you build some stuff ahead of time, but you do have to
clone the radio from a real clone image at some point.

You might consider joining the CHIRP mailing list (as linked from the
main CHIRP page) for more discussion, help, and information about beta
versions with more features.

Good luck!
