RE: [DX-CHAT] Honor Roll (ST0R and checkers) For information

2011-09-15 Thread Boris Knezović

Some people in DX community are taking DXpeditions for granted.

Here is the message from K3NA looking for operators willing to go to two major
DXpeditions in 2012:
http://lists.contesting.com/pipermail/cq-contest/2011-August/095257.html

Financial and 'free days' requirements are listed at the bottom, but before you
scroll to the bottom of the E-mail check other requirements people going to
those DXpeditions should have.

The email I got this week indicated the cards were being printed but offered
no expected date to start pushing out cards.

Hi all

From the ST0R-Homepage it appears that the QSL is designed.

Has anyone any info on the status of the ST0R-QSL mailing?

RE: [DX-CHAT] Honor Roll (ST0R and checkers) For information

2011-09-15 Thread Paul

All

IMO, you're looking at the QSL situation the wrong way. First
off saying "Some DXers like to screw the deserving for every penny" is a
rather broad brush comment that is really out of line. Yeah, we all know of
a few (a very small few) who abused the sport for personal gain. So let's
knock off those sorts of comments.

I'll turn the "If dxpeditions cant be funded without having to
rely on a few hundred bucks from the QSL cards, then they shouldn't go!"
comment around. How much money do you have invested in your station? $5k?
$10k? More? People sure like to brag about their equipment and antennas and
what they've invested, yet they complain about sending $5 to confirm an
operation? Especially when the operators went to personal expense, took
weeks off work/away from family and in some cases were at personal risk. I
don't get it. It's NOT about FUNDING. It's about SHOWING YOUR APPRECIATION
FOR WHAT THESE PEOPLE DID FOR THE HOBBY.

Come on, stop being such cheap-skates when it comes to QSLing
the big DXPeditions!

On to the subject of QSL checking. And I can speak from
experience on the matter as I did manage the prestigious WAZ Award for a
number of years. I hate to say this, but not every QSL checker (even if a
veteran DXer) really understands how to check cards. CQ works through some
national radio societies and sometimes the person they appoint might not be
the best suited for the task. What's the risk you ask? It's NOT with big
operations like ST0R. Those cards are pretty solid. It's the "run of the
mill" DX (as viewed across the country list). How many of you have received
blank QSL cards?

I saw 160 cards that were not "doctored" as such, but they were
fakes. How did I know? I understand propagation! When I got a card from a
station in zone 15, telling me he worked zone 31 at 1300Z on 160 meters, I
called BS and asked the guy to please check to see if the card was filled
out incorrectly as there was no way a QSO on 160 from 15 to zone 31 could
take place at such a time.

So, am I saying QSL checkers don't know what they are doing? NOT
AT ALL. But as an award administrator, you have to balance the integrity of
the program within the APPLICATION OF THE RULES. 160 meters is a pretty
specialized band as is 6 Meters. Why would you want to see someone get an
award for these two challenging bands through fraudulent means? If
maintaining the integrity of the award demands more specialized checking, so
be it.

Do I think it seems rather silly that a DXCC (or WAZ) Field
Checker can't approve a 160 meter QSO as indicated on a card from ST0R when
he can approve QSL for all the other bands? Yeah, I suppose so. Maybe there
is a REASONABLE way to resolve this, but that's another subject entirely.
Look at it from the Award Administrator point of view, we can't open
ourselves up to managing awards based on the exception to the rule. That
leads to inconsistencies and cries of "unfair".

know the reason Lionel. Some Dxers like to screw the

RE: [DX-CHAT] Birds

2011-09-15 Thread Dave White

I tried all sorts of things, starting with a plastic owl which worked for a
while. You can get an audio bird-scarer and attachable rows of plastic spikes
of the sort used on many railway stations and London Underground stations which
are used to discourage the ubiquitous London pigeons.

For me the problem isn't pigeons but starlings, particularly in the autumn when
I think they migrate over from Scandinavia. I have no proof of this, though:
they have no aircraft ID numbers and don't appear to squauk in Swedish :-)
Often about 300 of them sit on the antennas chattering at each other.

In the end I gave up. They don't seem to affect the antenna, don't seem to get
fried by 400 English Watts (I never tried fried Starling but I can't imagine
there's a lot of meat on them) and just ride on the antennas when I turn the
beam. They don't seem to peck at coax. For the last few years families of
blue tits have nested in the open ends of the booms on the 20m and 40m beams
and collar doves on the Tic Ring rotor of the 15m beam.

I just occastionally jetwash the guano off the patio and onto the flower bed.

Perhaps it's just easier to live with them?

Cheers
