Nobody else has mentioned this so I feel the need. How did those guys
get those platforms erected so quickly? They appear to be quite sturdy.
Wonder if they borrowed somebody's back yard, had a dump truck full of
rocks dropped off, and practiced doing this a few times. Ya' know this
wasn't very easy, even if they were able to wade hip deep next to the
rocks. If somebody could get the actual dimensions and forms of the
rocks, the next trip out they could have foam-fitted platforms to just
drop over the rock and start working! Ah, the dream

Re: [DX-CHAT] BS7H QSO Stats

2007-05-17 Thread Mark Robinson
Good point but I figured any zone 4 or 5 operating in zone 3 had a much
better chance of working him and any zone 3's in zone 4 or 5 had a much
lower chance, so this would skew the figures somewhat and tend to dilute the
zone 3 number down. I guess that I am surprised by the figures but maybe the
answer is that it was difficult from any place in the USA and only those
stations with decent antennas worked him. Those stations are equally placed
around the USA.

Total unique callsigns worked of 17,884 seems pretty low considering the
pileups and a 24 hour operation using 4 stations. Mind you it isn't easy to
set up a station on a rock in the blistering heat. So I am certainly not
knocking the operation. After all they went there and made it happen

That might be right, but I don't think it's *too* inaccurate. I think
the overall situation is still that the numbers more or less match up
here.

If you want to do a sample, just type random 1x2 calls into qrz and
see if the number matches.

I just ran n1aa through n0ad... maybe 10% of 'em were not in their call
areas.

So stuff 400 more qso's into zone 3, maximum.

Mark,

I have to agree and am very sure you are correct regarding how they
figured the zones. Even so, I think the percentage may be smaller than we
think in the grand scheme of things. Not sure we will ever know.

In my opinion, propagation was better than many thought it would be
actually. I have a 42 foot boom 5L 20M yagi at 75 feet and BS7H was in
every morning here in Extreme Eastern Va. Some mornings they were 10 over
S9, some mornings they were only S4, but still workable.

Unfortunately, there was an overwhelming desire for this DXPedition to
significantly "work down" the "need" for this entity, when in fact that
just wasn't realistic given the amount of time they were there and the
physical restrictions that prohibit elaborate antenna systems. 2L yagi
some 12 feet off the water from 1/2 way around the world is a pretty good
hurdle to overcome

So, the reality of this whole DXPedition was that it was undertaken to
"break the ice" of this desolate location "politically" for possible
future operations...and to give some amateurs the "opportunity" to work
the rarest DXCC entity currently on the list.

I too, know those with HUGE antenna systems, stacked arrays, and super
legal amps who had monumental problems working them. I also know those,
even here locally, that worked them on both modes withing 10 minutes.
Additionally, one station here in Va Bch actually worked them barefoot
with his wide spaced 3 element yagi at 100 feet. Yes! He happened to be
RIGHT THERE when they called CQ the first time...but by golly he is in the
log! Amazing actually.

My point here is..they surely did not help themselves by listening up in
excess of 70 Khz...and NOT following their laid out band plans for working
NA...or answering stations who called out of turn or even from the WRONG
CONTINENTbut that will always be a fact of this hobby for ever
more...unfortunately...

Finally, if you heard something you did not like...i/e stations insistent
on announcing LID...or what ever.Don't fall victim to that trapand
we should all work on developing OPERATOR SKILLS!.

You will NEVER BEAT a station/operator with a Big Antenna System AND a
"Talent Package"!!! Given the choice, I will take the "Talent
package" (operating skill) over big antenna any day! For those who have
both...You are the minority. For those who DO NOT have both Operator
Skill and huge antenna systems...you DO have a say so about obtaining 50%
of those two...and 50% will give you far better chance at bagging that
rare one the next time than NOT having it!

For those who were successful with BS7H!! CONGRATS!!

for those who did not get in their log.

Be ready next time...it won't be any easier!

[DX-CHAT] YW0DX

2007-05-18 Thread Mark Robinson
After reading the fuss about the disallowed BS7H dxpedition where they
operated on scaffolding on the reef I started to look at the YW0DX photos.
This station was operated from the base which sits on stillts (expensive
scaffolding) set out over the water. A few of the anttennas were set on the
island but several were set on the base. The only part of the base that
touches the island is a set of steps which leads to a long walkway which
leads to the base on stills sticking out of the ocean.

What is the difference between the banned BS7H setup and the YW0DX setup?

Since January, I have been conducting an experiment to see if there are
many new DXers in usa after the change in licensing tests. I have run
rapid contact style calls on 20meters SSB, signing HS0ZCW. Getting 20
over 9 reports to me during openings encouraged me to continue despite my
receiving most NA contacts at low sig levels.

I set out to provide Thailand to those new folks everywhere, reasoning
that all big guns have HS with multiple confirms (QSLs). Incoming QSL
cards here now accumulating have many comments like "first HS" "been
calling u for months" etc., with gratitude for their first HS contact.
And many list 100watts and a dipole as gear. Such contacts are very
gratifying to me. The fact that there are still big pile ups for an HS
20m SSB contact may tell us something about DXing today.

However, my theory abt why I get huge EU pile ups I explain more to
boredom than a rare one. That is, we all know the bands are open but few
are on, a phenomena these days. So, I guess EU calls me because I am the
only DX they can hear that hour and better oh hum DX than no DX.

Some thoughts.. 73

Charles Harpole

Yes some dx is better than none I suppose. I checked my log and I have only
one HS0 ever worked and that was when I was in Illinois - 20m ssb 14 April
1991. I received a QSL card but it had the wrong date on it.

I think that HS0 is a difficult path down to this part of the world (North
Carolina).

Looking forward to my second HS0 contact.

I have been away from dx-ing a while, and have not used the Dx Cluster system
in several years.I would like to find a node that only shows spots made by
U.S. stations. Are there any left that do this?

Yes, I know that I could set filters, but for the moment that is not what I
want.

Yes, I know that some folks like to know when G-land can hear DL-land, but
that doesn't interest me, so I see no need for the ten thousand spots per hour
that don't pique my interest.

I am looking for a Dx node that only shows dx spots made by USA hams.

Can anyone tell me of any please ??

  Thanks !!

As many have said in the past, if you think you can do a better job
yourself, why aren't you there instead?

Last evening I spent a good amount of time listening to the TI9KK
operation on 14.205. Frankly I was amazed that the YL op could get
anything out of the undisciplined, continuous-calling mess.

But I was absolutely horrified when after the YL signed off stations
started commenting that they hope they have better operators, and harshly
criticizing the operator. Do these ill-mannered people {without the nerve
to identify} realize that even though the op signed off she was likely
still listening on the frequency?

Perhaps the operator was not the most experienced, but did the pileup
operators do anything to make it the least bit easier on her? No. What
about the station in the Carri bean who repeated the first 2 letters of
his call phonetically for 20 seconds or more at a time? Or all the others
who continued calling when the call identified obviously was nothing
similar to theirs? Multiply that by 10 and that was what the yL had to
work through.

What about the General Class operators heard? Come on guys. If you want
to be a DXer spend $25 for the manual, memorize the answers and upgrade.
Why do you think you should be adding to your DXCC total by operating on
frequencies not allowed by your license? Too bad ARRL doesn't have the
nerve to disqualify these guys.

It amazes me that DXers appear to be reasonable people in their lives
otherwise. Most are professionals, but they can't figure out that
transmitting while the DX station is transmitting, when the call
identified is not them, or continuously for long periods of time is just
stupid.

And, even on a simplex operation the policeman are there. The YL asked
folks to stand by for 5 minutes. of course, some kept calling. So certain
stations felt obliged to lecture the pileup for the whole 5 minutes about
how they were supposed to be standing by, somehow missing the fact that
they were also ignoring the direction and not standing by. What good were
they doing? And of course, unidentified.

So, when criticism of the DX is considered, consider turning the DX
mirror the other way as well. If we take a good look we might be
surprised what we see if we take an honest look.

That YL went there to help others by giving them a contact. And they
rudely insulted her, and harshly criticized her. That was totally
uncalled for, If you want to criticize, criticize the operators who
prevented her from doing a good job.

If a guest came to your house and brought you a gift, would you criticize
them because you didn't think they did a good job wrapping it, or maybe
wasn't what you were expecting or hoping for? No that would be rude. So
why do it to Dxpeditioners. They went there to give you a gift, the
actions of the recipients prevented many from receiving the gift, and
they blamed the giver.

Of course, surely these were all inexperienced DXers just getting
started, right? Given a chance, hopefully they will learn better and not
keep repeating the same mistakes, right? And, when they take the time
away from work and their families, and travel on a boat for 40 hours, and
live on the boat, and take a rowboat into the jungle and operate I am
sure they will show us just how it is done, won't they?

Hopefully the YL did not hear those comments and won't decide to lump the
whole thing. She has good reason to.

This op has a similar situation to the just concluded VU7 op. During the
hours that HAMCAP said it was a possibility, they were on other bands. Mostly
they seemed focused on 40, 80, and 160M, which means they were focused on EU,
and not NA or SA. I even tried email to see if I could get them on 20M CW, and
even though VU7SJ tried on a couple of nights, I never even heard them then or
on any band or mode in the 2 weeks they were there. I have good antennas at 25m
and good equipment. The only cluster spots I saw on them was from the East
Coast NA. They were very few, had comments about weak signals, and didn't last
long.

HAMCAP says NA from my area (Pacific Northwest) should have its best chance
for A5 around their sunset which is around 0z. and it says I should be able to
work them SP on 17M and 20M around that time. So far, I have not seen them on
those bands at that time. I hope one of theirs reads DX Chat and realizes this
and changes the band/mod strategy on a few days jusgt to give NA W coast a
chance.. I have a friend who has 300+ confirmed and needs this for a new one.
A5 cluster spots are very rare here. I wish him luck. He had the same
experience from his QTH in Dallas, TX with the VU7. I did read the A5100A
website comments and they comment about difficult operating conditions and poor
QSO rates.

potential than the one that caused spectacular light shows on Earth earlier
this month, is to strike our planet in 2012 with a force of 100 million
hydrogen bombs.
Several US media outlets have reported that NASA was warning the massive

I hope this is appropriate for this list: I wanted to pass on that I've
created a web page that lists all the websites, logs, and similar information I
could find about the ongoing operations for the new PJ entities. The list
doesn't contain qrz.com links for any of the operations, and I've not included
websites that belong to the operators of the DXpedition unless it contains
information specific to the operation. There are plenty of other sites that
list the operations themselves (I recommend ng3k.com), but I thought this this
list would come in handy. The page is at
