Re: [DX-CHAT] Plug in drives
I have tried and it wasn't pretty. I forgot that when you install a program in the computer it does things to the registry. When I tried to access the program (some business software) on the flash drive it didn't work I utlimately installed the program from the drive onto the computer and everything was OK. Then I uninstalled everything when I was done If you remember that (AND) remember to uninstall the flash drive when you remove it, it should work OK It does work great a a backup for data GL Steve On 13 Dec 2005 at 0:21, Tom Anderson wrote: Date sent: Tue, 13 Dec 2005 00:21:37 -0600 From: Tom Anderson [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:[DX-CHAT] Plug in drives To: DX-CHAT dx-chat@njdxa.org Send reply to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fellow DXers: Has anyone used any of those new 256 + meg or 1 GB+ USB plug in microdrives for say logging or similar purposes? Re: [DX-CHAT] Plug in drives
Yes - if there's a computer where you're going that has something close to current standards (most of the memory sticks I've used lately use USB 2.0) it's a great idea. You can carry them in your pocket and I don't think they are affected by airport X-ray machines. One stick will hold a lot of logs, or even a lot of pictures. 73, Zack W9SZ On Tue, 13 Dec 2005, Tom Anderson wrote: Fellow DXers: Has anyone used any of those new 256 + meg or 1 GB+ USB plug in microdrives for say logging or similar purposes? Zack: Thanks for the reply. So far the replies have been mixed. Some say yes, and some say no. May have to try it out beforehand. There's even a CD designed for that purpose, PA0R's Debian DXpedition Disk http://home.iae.nl/users/reinc/ dxpedition_disk.html. This uses the TLF logging program and runs from the bootable CD so it doesn't require anything to be installed on the hard drive. It even has a CW keyer. 73, Bob N7XY Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org

Thanks for the reply. So far the replies have been mixed. Some say yes, and some say no. May have to try it out beforehand. I guess it's going to primarily depend on the logging software you're going to use. In my case, I could probably make CT, or NA work, but any windows software install is going to run into trouble with the registry. Also, you'd still have to setup ports for your keying, rig control, etc if you have that going on. Be good for backups, though. DX4WIN doesn't write anything to the registry - it should work just fine. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, 7 Charlemont Court, North Chelmsford, MA 01863 USA +978-251-9933, [EMAIL PROTECTED], http://www.ad1c.us Subscribe/unsubscribe, feedback, FAQ, problems http://njdxa.org/dx-chat To post a message, DX related items only, dx-chat@njdxa.org This is the DX-CHAT reflector sponsored by the NJDXA http://njdxa.org
Re: [DX-CHAT] Plug in drives
The DOS versions of CT would probably be OK, too. I haven't tried to run them from a memory module, though. I've copied any executables to the hard drive of the host computer and run them from there. The memory modules are great for transferring files though. I've backed up and transferred Autocad and TIF files as big as 200 Mb with them. 73, Zack W9SZ On Tue, 13 Dec 2005, Jim Reisert AD1C wrote: --- petethepup [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I guess it's going to primarily depend on the logging software you're going to use.
