[Dx-packages] [Bug 1238346] Re: on bootup wrong keyboard layout is recognized

2013-10-21 Thread Thierry Seewald
Just to give some precision:

when I display the Présentation de l'agencement (keyboard layout or
layout presentation or whatever) who displays a keyboard, its a french
keyboard which is displayed and when I hit the left corner alphabetical
key on the keyboard it shows that the left corner key is hit and that it
is an a but in all programs it's a q which appears.

And when I deselect and reselect French keyboard on the new keyboard
icon (and french is the only one that appears as a choice in this icon),
then the keyboard is correct.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1238346] Re: on bootup wrong keyboard layout is recognized

Same problem.

It is likely to go back to qwerty when the layout is changed via
keyboard layout change shortcut. When you change it with Super+Space it
is often stuck on one keyboard layout and sometimes it corresponds with
the selected layout, sometimes not.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1242550] [NEW] indicator-sound keyboard controls with left/right ARROW keys broken

2013-10-21 Thread Jan Groenewald
Public bug reported:

In raring I used to be able to focus indicator-sound and then down-arrow
to the volume, and then left/right arrow the volume up and down.

In saucy the left/right arrows, instead of adjusting the volume, moves
to the indicator to the right (clock) or left (battery) of the volume
indicator.

Now I am getting RSI from reaching for the far-away and difficult-to-
press volume adjusting keys on the Dell Latitude E5400.

The left/right arrow keys should only switch indicators if I have not
descended into the indicator submenu with the down arrow.

Note in the clock indicator, going with the down arrow into the monthly
calendar, the left/right arrows correctly move through the calendar
days, instead of switching to another indicator.

Bug description:
On saucy when I click mute the sound-indicator icon does not change.

This happens on both the ambiance and radiance themes.

Been happening somewhat sporadically since I updated to 13.10 (in

I am listening to music right now and the sound indicators shows a

I attached a screenshot showing sound menu with the indicator as I was
unable to catch the opened indicator menu, hope that works.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1237361] Re: Clock options greyed out in settings and missing from top panel

2013-10-21 Thread Autonomouse
This happened to me after I added a Time in other locations (via the GUI:
Settings Time Date Clock) and at the same time, removed UTC.
I didn't want UTC to be shown, just my current time zone (British Summer Time)
and the timezone in California, but it also showed UTC which is currently 1
hour behind (but won't be for much longer).

I fixed it with:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure tzdata
and a restart of the computer

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-10-21 Thread Sergio Callegari
Hi,

1) Weird enough the method by Jeffery To, namely the editing of
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
to include the logind polkit authorization works in a kubuntu machine
and is persistent here... So it fails on my ubuntu laptop but it works
on my kubuntu laptop.

Here

gdbus call --system --dest org.freedesktop.login1 --object-path
/org/freedesktop/login1 --method
org.freedesktop.login1.Manager.CanHibernate

returns 'Yes', not 'Challenge' as on the Ubuntu machine.

2) to Shiraz Dindar. Thanks to the pointer to the not-actually-hybrid-
suspend-mode. That's quite interesting! However, I'm a bit scared by it.
I wonder what happens if I suspend and the laptop decides to switch on
to hibernate, doing tons of disk activity, when I am on my Vespa on the
infamous 'pavé' (sort of quite irregular stone surface) present in many
Italian roads...

Title:
Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to
  re-enable

Status in Ubuntu Documentation:
  Confirmed
Status in “indicator-session” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla

  $ sudo cat
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  [Re-enable hibernate by default]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

[Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

[Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal
from your session. For background see #13.

However this is not persistent across reboots.

Launcher and panel follow the current wallpaper color. I've added a
screenshot. If I change the wallpaper, Dash recovers its chameleonic
  effect (until next reboot).

Also, this started happening at the same time that a new error message
(at log time) appeared, I've attached this error message, too.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1239710] Re: indicator-datetime and -session missing ~10% of the time

2013-10-21 Thread Mateusz Stachowski
I have that problem but on desktop not Ubuntu Touch. I can't be sure if
those indicators will start as they should.

Sometimes logout and login back makes them appear but for example today
when I loged in there was no indicator-datetime so I logout and log back
in and there is no indicator-session.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1242633] [NEW] unity pointer barriers sru bug

2013-10-21 Thread Maarten Lankhorst
Public bug reported:

x11proto-input, libxfixes, libxi, unity and unity-2d in precise needs
updates to work with the new pointer barrier api from x1.14.

[Impact]
 * Pointer barrier api has changed between 1.13 and 1.14.
(xorg-server-lts-saucy)
 * Modifications in unity and unity-2d are required to support both api's.

[Test Case]
 * Update all packages.
 * Test pointer barriers on an old xorg-server, they should continue to work.
 * Test pointer barriers on the new xorg-server, they should work.

[Regression Potential]
  * Low, it enables a separate code path for pointer barriers. The code in
unity is a bit different due to copying the rework from upstream unity and
keeping the old paths for legacy pointer barriers. Upstream dropped the old
paths.

[Other Info]
  * It's a bit of a hack. The old pointer barrier symbols live in libxfixes,
the new ones in libxi. Because of the overlap some modifications had to be made
to allow both pointer barriers to be included. This works as well as it can.
 * Depending on the queried libxi2/libxfixes versions, old pointer barriers or
new ones are used.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1221304] Re: Global app-menu is missing from Unity panel...

2013-10-21 Thread Dan
I had teh same issue, but turns out that the following two packages were
not installed:

unity-gtk-module-common unity-gtk3-module

The following fixed it for me:

sudo apt-get install unity-gtk-module-common unity-gtk3-module

On side note why this has happened to me is cause of this bug during the
upgrade:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tex-common/+bug/1241563

Which broke my upgrade progress, I was only able to continue it with
sudo apt-get install -f which most likefly failed to install new
packages as it didn't know about them

there was no panel because ubuntu was just starting, and the
brightness bubble were displayed after the panel were displayed and
  top margin has changed.

Yes, the the strut-dimension being updated (once the panel shows up) is
the most likely cause for this placement-calculation glitch.

4- Start reducing the brightness while the the network bubble is displayed

In my opinion this happen because the first time the network bubble
were displayed the calculation of the top margin where made while
there was no panel because ubuntu was just starting, and the
brightness bubble were displayed after the panel were displayed and
  top margin has changed.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1170647] Re: Clicking on Nautilus’ launcher icon opens new window instead of restoring the minimized one when browsing external drives/locations

2013-10-21 Thread Кирилл
I noticed that if open at least 2 tabs in window (even if both tabs show
contents of an external hard drive) - it will open and minimized as it should.

Bug description:
Sometimes left clicking the nautilus launcher icon doesn't bring up a
minimized nautilus window. Instead of restoring the window a new
instance of nautilus is showing up.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a nautilus window by clicking on the launcher icon.
  2. Navigate to a symlinked directory whose target is located on a different
harddrive (for example: a symlink to a folder on a sd-card).
  3. Minimize the nautilus window.
  4. Try to bring up that window again by clicking the launcher icon.

  What happens:

  1. A new instance (window) of nautilus is opened.
  2. There's no obvious way to access the first window again. The only way is
ALT+TAB.

  What schould happen:

If a nautilus window is already open and minimized clicking the
launcher icon should bring up that window. This was the behavior of
nautilus windows in Ubuntu 12.10 (quantal).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1108064] Re: HUD messes up application's Alt key bindings

I made patches for Blender and they were applied upstream r54199 + r54288.
So Blender 2.66 or later works as I expect.

In saucy the left/right arrows, instead of adjusting the volume, moves

  indicator.

Now I am getting RSI from reaching for the far-away and difficult-to-
press volume adjusting keys on the Dell Latitude E5400.

The left/right arrow keys should only switch indicators if I have not
descended into the indicator submenu with the down arrow.

Note in the clock indicator, going with the down arrow into the
monthly calendar, the left/right arrows correctly move through the

indicator-sound not showing muted icon on mute

Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
On saucy when I click mute the sound-indicator icon does not change.
The checkmark next to mute DOES show in the sound-indicator submenu. I
am in a conference so cannot check whether it is actually muted now.

This happens on both the ambiance and radiance themes.

If the whitelist was retired, Java and Wine would be hard-coded as the

  sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-desktop/ppa
  sudo apt-get update
  sudo apt-get upgrade
  sudo apt-get install indicator-keyboard
  2. Log out and log back in.
  2. Open System SettingsRegion Language
  3. Switch to the Text Entry tab.
  4. Click the + button to add at least two more keyboard layouts.
  5. Log out and log back in.
  6. Try to use the (new) default Super+Space keyboard shortcut to switch
between keyboard layouts.

  What happens
  ---
Usually, Super+Space is ignored. It worked for me once on login but every
other time I tested it didn't work.
It works fine in GNOME Shell but not in Unity.

  gsettings reset org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.media-keys
switch-input-source
seems to be enough to nudge Unity into respecting the Super+Space keyboard
shortcut.

My guess is that Unity is too aggressive in binding the Super key to
  itself.

  Workaround
  -
Shift+Super+Space, the keyboard shortcut to switch backward between keyboard
layouts works.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1195481] Re: [power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not installed in Unity

2013-10-21 Thread Iain Lane
** Description changed:

+ [ Description ]
+
+ gnome-control-center's power panel crashes when indicator-power isn't
+ installed.
+
+ [ Test case ]
+
  1. Uninstall indicator-power
  2. Open System Settings and click Power
  3. System Settings crashes
+
+ At 3 it shouldn't crash. If you have indicator-power installed, you
+ should see the option to configure whether it shows.
+
+ [ Regression potential ]
+
+ This adds some new code to check if the GSettings schema is installed, since
+ that's a reliable way to check for indicator-power's presence, and is what the
+ code modifies. It also makes the option appear in DEs other than Unity.
+
+ There's a chance that the GSettings schema-detection work could be wrong. It
+ also wouldn't hurt to check non-Unity environments such as a gnome-panel
+ session.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service pegs one of my CPUs at 100%

2013-10-21 Thread John Gruber
Updated to 13.10 from 13.04. CPU spikes for gnome-panel-service when I
launch gimp 2.8.6. The menu response is so slow it makes gimp unusable.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1199877] Re: unity-panel-service pegs one of my CPUs at 100%

2013-10-21 Thread jondecker76
My wife is a professional photographer and uses gimp for most of her
editing. We also just updated to 13.10 from 13.04 and Gimp becomes
nearly unusable at times, with unity-panel-service often hogging a lot
of the CPU, causing very long delays for the menus to appear. This is a
major issue!

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1213834] Re: Dash query 2+2 should yield 4 by default

Dash query 2+2 should yield 4 by default

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On up-to-date saucy as of this writing:
  - Open the dash
  - Type 2+2
  - Look at the search results

  Expected outcome:
  - The calculator scope should return 4, which should be te first result so
that pressing enter copies the result onto the clipboard

  Actual outcome:
  - The calculator scope does not return anything, it is disabled in Filter
by default

More elaborate queries like sqrt(2) also return a bunch of results
from all over the web but the calculator scope does not return
anything unless it's explicitly activated in Filter -- which must be
done for every query since the filter parameters get reset for each
  new search.

In my opinion, if the calculator scope manages to produces a result
from a query (i.e., it manages to make sense of the input as a
mathematical expression), that should be the first result in the dash.
This may be applicable to other (local) scopes if their ability to
produce results is a strong indication that the input is intended for
  that scope.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1203888] Re: appindicator ignores menu entries after having sent the menu to the indicator

2013-10-21 Thread Rainer Suhm
The blueman-applet didn't work for me as explained above. I 'autoremoved' the
python-appindicator, which didn't affect any other of my installed packages.
Then the blueman-applet worked, but the exit button in the applet menu was
still missing.
I went further and autoremoved python-gconf, which was removing
python-gnome2-doc too, but no other packages. Now everything ist fine for me.
If there are other users who have python-appindicator and python-gconf
installed, but no other applications depending on them, this might be a
temporary solution until the real problem is solved.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1232814] Re: Hibernate option is missing from menu in 13.10 even after trying to re-enable

2013-10-21 Thread Shiraz Dindar
Ha, Sergio, something like that would never be a concern for me because
I'm on an SSD (as everyone should be, by the way... nudge nudge), and
though my impression is that vibrations on disk heads are generally an
overstated concern, if it actually happened on a scooter on bumpy roads,
well that would be an issue yes. If that's a realistic possibility of
happening, yes, that's not much of a workaround for you -- unless of
course you switched to an SSD.

I upgraded from raring to saucy on my notebook, where hibernate was
enabled and working fine. Now the hibernate option is missing. I
followed the instructions on how to reenable hibernate
  (https://help.ubuntu.com/13.10/ubuntu-help/power-hibernate.html) but
the option is still missing. Hibernating from terminal via s2disk
  works.

File exists with proper content and permissions:
  $ sudo ls -l
/etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla
  -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 111 Sep 29 18:52

  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

  -

Solution found by Jeffery To (jefferyto) in comment #13 to enable
  hibernate menuentry:

  File /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-
  hibernate.pkla needs to contain:

[Re-enable hibernate by default in upower]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.upower.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

[Re-enable hibernate by default in logind]
  Identity=unix-user:*
  Action=org.freedesktop.login1.hibernate
  ResultActive=yes

Then reboot and run 'killall indicator-session-service' in terminal
from your session. For background see #13.

However this is not persistent across reboots.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1203357] Re: Additional user(s) that log out of a any session still show as being logged in

2013-10-21 Thread Sebastien Bacher
The issue there is rather due the way sessions are closed than
indicator-session itself, you can check the status with:

$ loginctl list-users
- lists the connected users

$ loginctl user-status username
- lists the status of the session for that user

The issue there seems to be that some processes are still running after
the session close (indicators, pulseaudio in some times) which makes the
session still be open for logind...

Not sure there is a bug in the indicators that make them not exit
properly though (on my system I've indicator-session-service still
running under the lightdm user atm, even being logged in with no active
greeter)

[Dx-packages] [Bug 968533] Re: Alt-tab to Firefox sends Firefox to 100% CPU; unity-panel-service to 80% CPU and hud-service to 20-80% CPU

2013-10-21 Thread Lain_13
Hi,

I'm using Firefox and suffered from often occasional lockups of system
due to overload of both CPU cores by 2 unity-panel-service processes
and hud-service. Especially often this behavior vere triggered when I
tried to type a text on any forum (and that as extremely annoying). That
happened pretty much often like every hour and sometimes a few times in
a row.

I think I found the reason why it happened to me and finally fixed it.

Apperently I had ~30 RSS feeds in the bookmars menu + Feed Sidebar addon
which caused them to reload every hour (not all at once but all during
each hour). So, as result structure of the menu were changed every now
and then. And these changes sometimes caused Unity Panel and HUD to
overload system!

So, to fix this issue I had moved all my RSS feeds and dynamic
bookmars into Unsorted Bookmarks section which does not shows up on the
menu (it's actually there but only as a link to open a bookmarks
manager). Seems like occasional freezes disappeared from that moment.

It's understandable that dynamic changes in the menu could require some
resources but I'm pretty much sure that hoggin 100% of 64 bit dual-core
CPU during 10-30 seconds is pretty much odd thing to do. At least I
don't need these RSS feeds in the bookmarks menu but what will have to
do those with RSS feeds on the bookmarks toolbar? Moving such feeds into
Unsorted Bookmarks will totally break their workflow.

I've been seeing UI hangs after switching tabs in Firefox, and

It can take 3-8 seconds to change *tab*. During this time the CPU is
maxed out; typical output from 'top' during this period shows 'hud-
service' and 'unity-panel-service' combined using about the same CPU
  as Firefox itself:

53 0.6 6:14.86 hud-service
38 1.5 6:42.14 unity-panel-service

I suspect that the change is causing a (an inefficient) re-index
related to updated menu structures. (Eg. something like the history
menu, although I can't see what it is as don't currently have a menu
  bar).

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1195481] Re: [power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not installed in Unity

2013-10-21 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Jeremy, or anyone else affected,

Accepted gnome-control-center into saucy-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at http://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
control-center/1:3.6.3-0ubuntu45 in a few hours, and then in the
-proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to
enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update
out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, and change the tag
from verification-needed to verification-done. If it does not fix the
bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to
verification-failed. In either case, details of your testing will help
us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

[power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not

Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:

  In Progress
Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

  gnome-control-center's power panel crashes when indicator-power isn't
  installed.

  [ Test case ]

  1. Uninstall indicator-power
  2. Open System Settings and click Power
  3. System Settings crashes

At 3 it shouldn't crash. If you have indicator-power installed, you
should see the option to configure whether it shows.

  [ Regression potential ]

This adds some new code to check if the GSettings schema is installed, since
that's a reliable way to check for indicator-power's presence, and is what the
code modifies. It also makes the option appear in DEs other than Unity.

There's a chance that the GSettings schema-detection work could be wrong. It
also wouldn't hurt to check non-Unity environments such as a gnome-panel
  session.

  [ Original report ]

I see that unity recommends indicator-power; let's make it a depends
  instead.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1242550] Re: indicator-sound keyboard controls with left/right ARROW keys broken

Title:
indicator-sound keyboard controls with left/right ARROW keys broken

Status in Indicator Display Objects:
  In Progress

Bug description:
In raring I used to be able to focus indicator-sound and then down-
arrow to the volume, and then left/right arrow the volume up and down.

Note in the clock indicator, going with the down arrow into the
monthly calendar, the left/right arrows correctly move through the
calendar days, instead of switching to another indicator.

  Possibly this is related to lp:1227250 , which I see is freshly fixed;

The label for the brightness indicator appears (unreliably) inside the
  slider--is this intentional?

Will verify in released image tomw.

[Dx-packages] [Bug 1195481] Re: [power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not installed in Unity

[power]: gnome-control-center crashes if indicator-power is not

Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

  gnome-control-center's power panel crashes when indicator-power isn't
  installed.

  [ Test case ]

  1. Uninstall indicator-power
  2. Open System Settings and click Power
  3. System Settings crashes

At 3 it shouldn't crash. If you have indicator-power installed, you
should see the option to configure whether it shows.

  [ Regression potential ]

This adds some new code to check if the GSettings schema is installed, since
that's a reliable way to check for indicator-power's presence, and is what the
code modifies. It also makes the option appear in DEs other than Unity.

There's a chance that the GSettings schema-detection work could be wrong. It
also wouldn't hurt to check non-Unity environments such as a gnome-panel
  session.

  [ Original report ]

I see that unity recommends indicator-power; let's make it a depends
  instead.
