[Dx4win] Ver 8 wish list re spotting.

2009-03-08 Thread Mel Martin
As i mentioned in another e-mail, I really like the way DX4Win handles
spots... but I do have a few quibbles.

We presently have to choice of flagging a new DXCC either when we have
never worked it... pretty rare for me nowadays... or we have never
confirmed it... I have lots of those.

It would be nice if, at a glance, we could differentiate. New DXCC and
unconfirmed new DXCC and do away with the check-box in preferences.
Could we use priority 0 for never worked DXCC spots?

Grey spots... the trouble is there are different kinds of grey spots
that D4W treats the same... and I don't want to.

If the spot is for a band or mode I do not or can not operate I never
want to see it... Grey minus... lowest possible priority... or hide them
completely.

If the spot is outside spotter geographic region I am filtering on... I
usually don't want to see them especially if the spotting network is
busy. However, if the band is quiet, such as early morning, I do like to
monitor all spots. These are the real grey spots. Priority 10. (Not 9...
I need room for a new level).

If you have worked a station before D4W flags them as grey spots. The
logic is obvious, you don't work a station twice for an award especially
if it's a DXpedition. However I'm not convinced this is correct. Even if
you don't need a station, on a particular band for example, it is useful
to see a spot for a needed award/band/mode regardless of where they are
operating. For example if you need VP8DLM on 40 but have worked him on
20. If you see him on 20, you know he IS active and he IS NOT on 40.
This is of interest! This should be one level above black spots..
Priority 8... black spots pri 9.

As I do switch grey spots on and off, there should be a quicker way to
turn them on and off. Maybe a right mouse click option.

Grey spots may update a higher priority spot, but should not change the
priority. IE if grey spots are on and a European station sends a spot
(assuming we are in NA) for a needed country... it should not assume the
"grey spot" priority (unless it's older than 60 min)... because the
station is being heard in the filtered region.

Now that I've actually tried it (7.07.02) when I try to start up a
second copy it just transfers focus to the currently running copy.
Sorry for the incorrect assumption.

The only way I've ever seen "Demo" mode entered was at startup when
the starting directory for DX4WIN was wrong.

Are people actually seeing it go into Demo mode, or is it just
refusing to save the log file?

I ask this because there's a "feature" in Windows Vista that marks
files on removable media (like thumb drives, or USB hard drives)
read-only after they've been opened for a while. My XYL sees this:
open a word document on the thumb drive, edit for a while, then try to
close it. You get a permission error, and the original document is
GONE.

Microsoft, rather than fixing this, blames the victim and says that
the files must be copied to the hard drive before being edited:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx?dg=microsoft.public.word.docmanagement&tid=f7a01f32-8177-47b8-93de-9bd66ca62f29&cat=en-us-office&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1

If you're keeping your log on anything but your "C" drive, and you're
running Vista, this may be what's happening.

If not, never mind. :-)

That is what I do already inside the code to avoid a second copy of

I also open the license file in shared mode, but I don't think the code

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN in DEMO mode

2009-03-08 Thread Mel Martin
We have drifted from the original thread. The fact that you can screw up
DX4Win by starting two instances almost simultaneously is perhaps an
interesting bit of trivia... and the RunOnlyOne utility is
interesting... I never heard of it before... but has little to do with
the problem that some have had after the program has been running for
some time and suddenly changes to DEMO mode disabling the saving any new
or changed data.

There's a program that you can use to work around this - you put it in
your taskbar instead of the direct dx4win shortcut, and it keeps you
from having more than one instance of the program started. It's called
RunOnlyOne, and you can find it at

Paul, this is something you can do at startup - look to see if there's

Re: [Dx4win] eQSL

2009-03-08 Thread Mel Martin
Good...

There are a few improvements that could be made that probably don't
involve too much effort.

I actually moved all my data to a more expensive, much more feature rich
logging program. But after a few years, I missed D4W. The last thing I
would want to see is a lot of new features... I like the fact it is
fast, slick (easy to enter data) and accurate (thanks Jim). Anything
Paul does to the program has to reinforce these attributes because it's
what distinguishes D4W from the other programs.

Areas to be addressed:
Data safety.
eQsl.
user configurable modes. a table containing the mode, type
(Phone,CW,Digital,Image) and equivalent ADIF mode if necessary.
For example:
USB,P,SSB
LSB,P,SSB
CW,C
FM,P
FMN,P,FM
PSK,D,PSK31
PSK31,D

interfacing with subscription XML callbook services.

I love the spotting in D4W but I believe there are a few simple
improvements to make it even better... I'll save it for a separate email
to see what the gang thinks.

There are some things that other programs I think he should stay away
from because they generate a continuous need for fixes.

Scraping data from QRZ.com or Buckmaster.

Digital modes. It would be better to interface with MixW, DM780 or
Winwarbler. Let someone else keep up with the latest digi modes ;-)
BTW I am active on Digital modes but use a dedicated program. And I
would like to see it interfaced with D4W for data transfer.

[Dx4win] Dx4win and Multiple Monitors

2009-03-08 Thread ON4AOI
Hi all,
Since there are a few among us that have problems with multiple screen setup
Here some tips.

HARDWARE

If your Videocard can handle 2 monitors at the same time you probably won´t
have
any problems.
If you have to install a second videocard to have a 2 monitor setup make
sure
They use the same video chipset and drivers with equal or more memory,
In other words your primary video card is 8xAGP FX5500 (Geforce) then you
should
Search after a PCI FX5500 (Geforce) card (older systems)

In my vista Ultimate computer I have 2 times Point of view GF 8500GT
with 1Gb memory (interface is pci-express x16)video cards
4 x 22´screens are attached to this cards.
DX4WIN is splitted over 3 screens and all remains where I putted it

SOFTWARE

First of all in DX4WIN|PREFERENCES|SCREEN Tab
"Leave all windows in original position" should be checked.
Otherwise the above won´t work

To Paul, Guy Dick etc...

Like Guy said, I have only experienced the DEMO mode when I have double
clicked on the desktop item; on a slow PC. for those that have seen this
problem - ask yourselves - is your PC slow to open up ?

Actually - it's a treble click - once to select desktop item, 2nd to open
desktop item; 3rd if it didn't open, do I click again to make sure I tried
to open it ? !!

It has only happened to me on my old desktop; my shack uses a laptop that is
fast.

If this is really the cause; could the software start up behaviour be
changed Paul ?

If someone tried to open a 2nd application, where the first is recognised as
a licensed copy with a key, rather than revert to DEMO mode, could you force
it to stay in licensed user mode; in this case opening only the 1st
application, not the 2nd ?

Just an idea

Hi Dick and others,
I can confirm this behavior,
It´s not a dx4win problem for sure but what we do, sometimes computers can
be
Full loaded and don´t start immediately what we double clicked(can be
changed to 1 click also)
if we do it again same problem will occure in dx4win -result- DEMO.

I use Alt+S a lot and certainly after a new one , if for any reason I was in
Demo mode it would
Have warned me and could write down or even print out the changes I made to
the log.

Also I use AutoBackup professional from memeo, This programs auto back up
every change I make in a
file or log and this without delay on a USB stick.

I have my D4W shortcut in my Windows system tray (to the left, next
to the Start button). From there it only takes a single click to run
the program. However, sometimes I double-click on the icon out of
habit and D4W will almost always start-up in Demo mode. There is
obviously something going on with the almost simultaneous
start-up. When that happens I simply Exit the Demo copy, restart D4W
with a single click and all is good.
