[Dx4win] DX4WIN 909 config file

2021-04-06 Thread Radivoj Kar, F6GNZ via DX4WIN
In DX4WIN 909 Help list it is written:
Write current preferences to a text file formatted as an INI file

Saving your current preferences in a text file allows you to restore your
setting to a previous configuration. This way you can save multiple
preferences, but it also facilitates upgrading to newer versions when the
format of the configuration file has changed. To reload your preferences, see
Load Configuration File.
You will be prompted for the name of the text file, which, by default, is the
file config.txt in the SAVE directory.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN 909 config file : MORE QUESTIONS

2021-04-06 Thread Radivoj Kar, F6GNZ via DX4WIN
I am confused:In DX4WIN v. 8.0.5 config files were stored in Save directory as
Config.INI files. For my different operating places and equipment, when Writing
Config files I could name them as DX4WIN Home 7610.INI, DX4WIN Hyeres 7300.INI
etc..
I could even load them into DX4WIN 9.0.9 from the 8.0.5 Save directory. But now,
after loading them from 8.0.5 and writing them to 9.0.9 Save directory as
ConfigHome.txt and ConfingHyeres.txt, I also see in the 9.0.9 Save directory
the files config.dat and config.~at
What is the relation between these config.txt and config.dat files? Are these
.DAT files reflecting only the current config status of the program?

You can read the release notes at:

https://www.country-files.com/dx4win-cty-21.8-05-april-2021/

DX4WIN 9 users should use Help | Check for Updates from the main menu.
Note that there may be a delay between this announcement and when the
updated country file is actually available.

Users of older versions of DX4WIN should use the DX4WIN Data Updater:

Hi Radi,

The .INI file was/is in plain text format, as is config.txt

I believe for version 9, Paul wanted to avoid non-standard file
extensions. For example, the custom awards file is no longer named
DX4WIN.AWD but instead is named custawds.dat. In other words, text
files use the .TXT extension, while non-text (i.e. binary) files use
the .DAT extension.

Of course, that makes it a little more difficult to use some of the
files, particularly the saved configuration, between different
versions of DX4WIN. But on the other hand, it makes it easier for the
user to look at and/or modify a .TXT file because Windows will open
these it using Notepad as the default editor. Windows might open a
different application for a .INI file.

I hope this answers your question.

2021-04-06 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
> What is the relation between these config.txt and config.dat files? Are these

In DX4WIN 8.05 and earlier:

DX4WIN.CFG - configuration file, binary format, can not edit. Saved
every time your exit DX4WIN

.INI - saved configuration file written by "Write
Configuration File" from Preferences, text form, can edit. This is a
text-format backup of your DX4WIN preferences. You can import this
into your existing DX4WIN preferences if you need to restore them for
some reason.

In DX4WIN 9.01 and earlier:

CONFIG.DAT - configuration file, binary format, can not edit. Saved
every time your exit DX4WIN

.TXT - saved configuration file written by "Write
Configuration File" from Preferences, text form, can edit. This is a
text-format backup of your DX4WIN preferences. You can import this
into your existing DX4WIN preferences if you need to restore them for
some reason.

So:

DX4WIN.CFG -> CONFIG.DAT
.INI -> .TXT

Re: [Dx4win] Microsoft update problem (DX4WIN)

2021-04-06 Thread Alan Zack
This has happened to me several times with no apparent reason why. It
always turns out to be my COUNTRY dat file went away. I go to the
BACKUP folder, find the latest COUNTRY DAT file, copy it to the SAVE
folder, then DX4WIN opens normally. Then I do a HELP: CHECK FOR
UPDATES to be sure I have the latest COUNTRY file.

In by BACKUP folder I have 81 sub folders with backed up stuff. Is it
necessary to keep all 81 folders? Can I delete all but the most recent
two or three?

I don't know why the COUNTRY file disappears every two or three
months. The first time it was scary until Paul responded to the crash
report generated when DX4WIN failed to open. Now I know what to do.

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN.CTY country file Release #21.7 - 23 March 2021

2021-04-06 Thread Alan Zack
Doing a search for IOTAMSG I had 2824 hits. Most were for JA calls that I did
not enter an IOTA number, plus ZL, UA9, IT9, 9M6, DU, YB calls IOTA fills where
I had not entered an IOTA number. KP4 added Island name.

ZK1USA IOTAMSG changedOC013 to OC014. QRZ.COM says Rarotonga which is OC014

I have a strange entry for K5K Kingman Reef DXpedition Oct 2000. My QSL cards
says OC-096. Notation in NOTES for this QSL says: IOTAMSG: Bad Island=6312

PJ2/W8WTS shows IOTAMSG: Bad Island=8464

3D2R/MM 09/2011 IOTAMSG: Added IOTA But was /MM, not IOTA

XF1AA says IOTAMSG: Bad Island=3256, QRZ.COM says: Isla Isabel DXpedition
NA-189

FO5RH says IOTAMSG: Bad IOTA=OC066 IOTAMSG: Bad Island=6050

TI9/3Z9DX/MM says IOTAMSG: Added IOTA but was /MM no IOTA

VP8IDX/MM says IOTAMSG: Added IOTA but was /MM no IOTA

HI3LT says IOTAMSG: Bad Island=3929

R7AL/1 says IOTAMSG: Bad IOTA=EU104 but ClubLog says: Pezhostrov isl. EU-147
07-08 July 2020

There were many IOTAMSG that I will have to research by checking my QSL cards.
I always check the IOTA number printed on the card against what is in my log
but some of these are from the 1980 and 1990's:
VK7FLI, KL7AK, T30R, J48ISL, H44RY, H44MS, EM1HO, PX0Z, J8/WA2VUY, EM1KY,
ZK1NJC, KC4USV, ZK1USA, 9Y4W, H40FN, These had their IOTA numbers changed from
what I had logged.

I will update later when I do more research.

Thanks for all your hard work with this project.

Hello Alan

If you update with the last country file, iota numbers will be updated
according country file. If you have a QSO marked with something different iota
number in your file, a notice will be inserted in "Notes for this QSO" field
and iota will get the number the country file has.
This notice will look as IOTAMSG: something more for example IOTAMSG:
added IOTA

So you need to search (F8) for IOTAMSG: in "Notes for this QSO" field

This will return some QSOs. In my case about 40 QSOs returned. You need to look
these QSOs and compare with original QSL cards. Send the QSOs you don't agree
to Jim.

Why to do it?

1) help all other hams to have a right database

2) correct some mistakes you possibly have

3) possibly you will find some calls with an added iota and possibly this is a
new one for you (the most of 40 QSOs were added iotas - unfortunately not
something new this time - hi hi).

I have worked over 850 iotas and at least 850 checked and found some mistakes I
did, some Jim did and some new (in previous releases) I hadn't asked for a card!

Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN.CTY country file Release #21.7 - 23 March 2021

2021-04-06 Thread Jim Reisert AD1C
Thank you, I will review all before the next country file release.

I'm not sure I can fix the ones with /MM, sorry.

I believe this is how Bad Islands can happen: Let's say you log a H40
QSO as OC-100 but it's really OC-065, and you select what you think is
the correct Island Name. In some old version of DX4WIN (I do not know
which one), you could change the IOTA but it will still be associated
with the old (incorrect) island name, which you can't see because it's
not valid for the new IOTA. Check IOTAs will find these. I had over
200 in my own log that I had to change. I think the simplest way to
fix them if you don't know the island is to simply select "--" and
save the QSO again.

Several deleted countries had their islands assigned to a different
IOTA group. Kingman Reef is one, Penguin Island (ZS0?) is another
one. The old IOTA is no longer correct, check IOTAs will find these.

There are another group of islands that were moved from their old
group into a new one. FO5TH on Tatakoto Atoll now counts for OC-298
instead of OC-066. Paramushir used to be part of AS-025 but is now in
the new AS-204 group.

I believe ZK1USA was used from Manihiki, North Cook Islands, in
October/November 2001, and from South Cook islands (Raratonga)
starting in December of that
year. What is the date of your QSO?

> R7AL/1 says IOTAMSG: Bad IOTA=EU104 but ClubLog says: Pezhostrov isl. EU-147
> 07-08 July 2020

Your log had EU-104, but EU-147 is correct as you found.

I'll review the rest later.
