Why is it not being saved in DX4805/ save ? Mike, when you re-open DX4WIN, your log comes up, correct? I wonder if you are saving the log in the secondary backup directory instead of the primary backup directory. This obviously defeats the purpose of having a secondary backup directory! Start DX4WIN. Assuming it's loading your log, click, on File | Save. At the top of this window will be a line that says "Look in:". Click on the down-arrow in this field. It will show you the directory where DX4WIN is saving your log. Exit this window, then File | Save As and navigate to your DX4W805\SAVE directory. Type in N4EPD.dxl and then save the log. Now exit DX4WIN and re-start. Ensure you log is loaded. Perform the same steps above to see where DX4WIN saved your log file. Ensure that it was into your DX4W805\SAVE directory. -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Bill, There are several screens you have to go through to get this right ("right" being a matter of opinion). First, File | Awards. The DXCC tab should be up. Make sure that 30m is checked in the "Valid bands" box. If you do not care about a separate 30m DXCC award, you can leave 30m unchecked in the "Award bands" box. Then in File | Preferences. On the Station tab, make sure that 30m is checked under Bands. I am not 100% sure this is necessary, but I'm trying to mirror how I have have 80 meters set up (a band for which I have no antenna). Finally, on the Packet3 tab, make sure that 30m is *unchecked*. The effect of all this is that 30m spots will be still sent to the DX spots window, but they will be grayed out. Not gone completely, but it should make them easier to not see. NOTE that if something is spotted on 30 meters that is an all-time new country, or an all-time new mode, you will NOT get any alerts about this. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Then bring up the PSK31 window using ALT-3 (or Window | PSK31). If you right-click in the bottom of the PSK window, just under the (macro) buttons, you can get to a Settings menu, where you can specify the COM port for PTT, etc. After that, well, I don't know. If you type the insert the INS key in the DX spots window, it should add the word (HOLDING) to the end of the window title. Does it do that? Holding allows you to scroll back and forth a window at a time. Without INS, if a new spot came in, DX4WIN would return to the newest spots. It does NOT keep new spots from coming in or causing the window to scroll a line at a time for incoming spots. All it does it keep the window from scrolling all the way forward if you have gone back a few screens, and a new spot comes in. This is obviously much harder to deal with during a contest. Sorting by TIME instead of by ARRIVAL helps, because new spots take the place of old spots. -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Your DX4WIN log file has a ".DXL" file extension. This is the file you do not want to over-write (unless you are re-saving your log). An exported ADIF file will have a ".ADI" file extension. When you try to save the exported ADIF file, just type a unique name into the "File name:" field in the "Save As" window. That name will automatically have the .ADI extension appended onto it when you save the file. Then remember this name, because you will need it for whatever program into which you are importing it. Does this make sense? 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I use a program called SyncBackSE to synchronize that SAVE directory to a separate location on my local network. The computer in the home office upstairs accesses the log from that synchronized network location. Otherwise, it gets all of its other files from its local SAVE directory. Other than having to be careful to re-open the log on the "other" computer when I make changes on one of them, I don't sync any other data files. I use the DX4WIN Data Updater to keep the data files on both computers in sync. I use the "Secondary backup directory" on each computer so that if I accidentally don't re-open the log after a change on the other computer, I'll still have a copy of the modified log (the one I "overwrote") to merge back in if necessary. So far this system has worked out OK, though I wish DX4WIN worked more like the contest logging programs where the QSOs are synchronized across the network. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

It did not provide a way to query the radio to determine whether it is operating split or transceive. Some logging programs try to overcome this by having a "soft" split bit stored in the software's program memory. As long as the split status of the radio is ONLY manipulated by software (i.e. software sets radio to split or software sets radio to transceive), and the user never touches the buttons on the front of the radio, this can work most of the time. DX4WIN does not support this. However, a few years ago, ICOM began issuing new firmware for the IC-7600/7700/7800 radios which removes the protocol deficiency. If you upload the new firmware into your radio, and use an updated .RIG (radio) driver for DX4WIN, you will be able to operate and record split in the method you describe. You can find the ICOM firmware here: http://www.icom.co.jp/world/support/download/firm/ You can find an IC-7600 .RIG file that supports split operation here: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/radios/ I used that radio file with my IC-7600 with good success. However, there are some caveats: 1. In general, when operating split with these radios, you do NOT want to be in real-time logging mode in DX4WIN (F9). In order for DX4WIN to read each VFO frequency, it must temporarily make that VFO "active". When polling is done, DX4WIN will leave the Rx VFO as active (the one the dial responds to). This can cause you to tune off the DX station frequency, instead of moving your Tx frequency (going into split had made the Tx VFO "active"). This can be disastrous in a pileup. 2. You NEVER should to operate split while in real-time logging mode in DX4WIN (F9) with an ICOM IC-7700. The IC-7700 only has one synthesizer. When transmitting while in split mode, the act of polling may cause you to briefly transmit on the Rx frequency during the polling cycle, when the Rx frequency is temporarily made "active" in order to read it. This is VERY BAD. 3. I believe there was an IC-7800 driver for DX4WIN at one time, but ON4AOI may have pulled it. I don't remember the reason. As I said, I had good success with this and my IC-7600. And OK success with my IC-7700 given #2 above. I have never tried an IC-7800. Your IC-756 Pro III does not have firmware to enable better split operation. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I assume when you upload to LoTW, you are only uploading the most recently worked QSOs (those you have not uploaded before). And you are uploading this same ADIF file to both LoTW and Club Log. This file will only contain a small portion of your log. By definition, because you are uploading these QSOs to LoTW for the first time, they will all be unconfirmed. When you later import the LoTW report file into DX4WIN to confirm your QSOs, DX4WIN will mark those imported QSOs as confirmed by LoTW. But the incremental LoTW export flow will never export these QSOs again, after they have been confirmed, because they had already been exported to LoTW. Club Log has two upload options: 1. Upload new QSOs, but don't delete existing QSOs in Club Log 2. Delete all QSOs in Club Log, then upload the QSOs The second option will allow you to upload your confirmed QSOs. However, because it will remove all your existing QSOs in Club Log, you will need to export your ENTIRE DX4WIN log to ADIF format, then upload that large ADIF file to Club Log. You can do this via the File | Import/Export menu item. This should solve your problem. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

You can (and should) use the DX4WIN Data Updater to update the file: http://dx4win.ad1c.us/updater/ If you are tracking IOTA, the RSGB released a new list of all the IOTA islands, including the new ones that were added at the IOTA 50th Anniversary Conference in July 2014. This will allow you to populate the "IOTA Island" field in your logbook for the new IOTA. If you use the updater, you will automatically get the new file. This is another huge release, meant to get more in-sync with the callsign and prefix data on ClubLog.org. There is still work to be done, but we are making progress. There may be new errors (I know of at least one, who will find it?), so let me know about them ASAP. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Dx4win] 8/30 country file posted, no release notes yet
Hi Gang, I've posted the new country file. Please run the UPDATER to get it. I'll post the release notes tomorrow morning. Trying to log the callsign VERSION should bring up the date 30-AUG-2004 in the QSL Mgr field, if you have the new file. NOTE: there is a new IOTA "fulllist.xml" from the RSGB, which the UPDATER should automatically pick up. If you have worked any of the recently-added IOTA, you should now be able to select the Island name in the QSO window for those QSOs. 73 - Jim AD1C p.s. the new fullist.xml is what caused the country file to crash DX4WIN. There were duplicate entries for all the new IOTA, both theirs and mine. Once I found the problem, it was easy to fix. fulllist.xml was posted just after my last good country file (before I discovered and fixed one mismatch in my log), but before the country file I wanted to release (with the last fix). This window of time was no more than 1/2 hour long! Just bad luck on my part, I guess. -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Dx4win] DX4WIN Country File Update status
Hi Folks, As I wrote on July 11, "I'm in the midst of a huge country file update, trying to reconcile differences with the database in Club Log." I'm still working on this - it's been a HUGE project. Even though the work to identify differences is automated, resolving those differences takes time. It takes an average of 2-5 minutes for each one, including research, discussion with G3PMR, then actually making changes (if needed). This doesn't include time spent looking into new information we discover along the way. So given I've found at least 300 such differences so far, that adds up to between 10-25 hours of continuous work, if I had that kind of time. And I'm only up to the "J" callsigns at this point, so K-Z still lie ahead. If there's a rush to push out a new country file due to the recent IOTA changes, I can do that. However, I'd rather try to finish this project first, hopefully by the end of the month, if not a little sooner. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Dx4win] New Provisional IOTA island groups
As some of you may know, at the recent 50th IOTA Convention, the RSGB announced about a dozen new provisional IOTA groups. The list can be found here: http://www.g3kma.dsl.pipex.com/IOTA%20Programme%20New%20Island%20Groups.pdf The RSGB has not yet released a new "fulllist.xml" file for these IOTA, which also prevents me from adding them to the DX4WIN county file. This weekend, I will try to modify the existing DX4WIN IOTA database by hand and release a new country file so you can at least log the IOTA reference numbers in DX4WIN, in the interim. I'm in the midst of a huge country file update, trying to reconcile differences with the database in Club Log. I may or may not release the results of that at the same time. I was hoping to have the majority of my work done before releasing a new file, but IOTA may force my hand. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Or you could take one of the two ADIF files, remove the header (up until the at the top), then append that to the second ADIF file, using a text editor. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Dx4win] WARNING: truncated LoTW downloads
Hi Folks, I have been investigating why my QSOs with W1AW/4 in NC were not confirmed in DX4WIN, even though LoTW said they were confirmed. It turns out that of the dozen or so incremental LoTW reports I've downloaded this year (incremental => new confirmations since last download), two of them were truncated before all the QSOs had been downloaded. There is no way to tell by importing the confirmations into DX4WIN that the file is incomplete (maybe Paul can detect this in a future version). However, there is a way to tell if you look at the .adi file in a text editor like notepad. Scroll all the way to the bottom of the lotwreport.adi file and look for this line: This indicates that the download is COMPLETE. If that line is missing, or you see something like this, then the download is INCOMPLETE. ZF2AM 80M CW CW http://www.rickmurphy.net/lotwquery.htm Check the "Report on QSL Records Only?" box. Optionally, also check the "Include location data in report?" box if you want to download state, county, grid square, etc. Restrict the download to one year at a time by setting the "Report on QSOs starting on what date?" and "Report on QSOs ending on what date?" boxes appropriately. The fewer QSOs you try to download in a single query, the more likely it is that the download will be complete (not truncated). Even I have had trouble trying to download only one year worth of confirmations from 2007, I had to try multiple times to get a complete download. And this wasn't even the biggest year -- 964 QSOs vs. 4052 QSOs confirmed in 2009. It's important to note that some people re-sign their old logs with the wrong station information, and then upload those QSOs to LoTW, over-writing the previously correct ones. I have seen several instances of this by going back and comparing the more-recently downloaded LoTW confirmation with the same QSO I had downloaded in the past (and I wasn't looking very hard to find them). You will get mismatches when you "Import from LoTW". This only happens if you "Include location data in report" in your LoTW report download. You will want to investigate each and every one of these mismatches, using the "Review QSOs not found" feature in the LoTW menu. Look for the QSOs with 'X' in the first ('F') column in the editor. You may need to get in touch with the station you contacted to verify which set of information is correct. 73 - Jim AD1C p.s. the above is probably worthy of adding to the existing LoTW application note, or creating a new one. -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Dx4win] Convert W1AW Centennial QSOs to Spreadsheet version 2.0 released
I've released version 2.0 of a program to convert your W1AW QSOs (ADIF format) into a spreadsheet: http://software.ad1c.us/W1AW/ This new version features a real Windows GUI program and a real Windows installer. There have been no functional changes. You can see what it looks like by going to the URL above. In a weak moment, I started looking into how hard it would be to wrap a Windows GUI around the program. I ended up doing so without using Microsoft's development environment (Visual Studio). In some ways, this sped up the process, if you take away all the time I spend becoming familiar with the intimate details of Windows API (programmers interface). I certainly learned a lot in the process, and there are some things I would like to improve. There is still one feature I still need to add (support for W1AW/3 in DC starting in October). That will go into the next version. If you encounter any problems with the program or in the documentation, please let me know. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Dx4win] Errors in QSO Display Bearing and Range from my QTH
Hi Ken, The QSO with K5ZYZ has the STATE field filled in. DX4WIN is calculating distance and bearing from your location to the (population center) of the STATE (Texas). The QSO with W7LTG does not have the STATE field filled in. DX4WIN is alculating the distance from your location to the (center of the) COUNTRY (United States DXCC entity). Here is where DX4WIN thinks the "center" of the USA is: 37,32,N,91,40,W (south-central MO) Try plugging that into a mapping program, and see if it doesn't give you the same results as the W7LTG QSO above. I'll say it again: "Remember, DX4WIN starts with the target coordinates of the DXCC entity. Some entities are very large. The "center" of the USA is somewhere in south-central Virginia I think [I was wrong, it's in MO]. DX4WIN will use the STATE, GRID and/or IOTA fields to give more exact bearing/distance." The QTH field in DX4WIN is for record keeping only, it does not figure into DX4WIN's distance/bearing calculation. 73 - Jim AD1C -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Dx4win] Errors in QSO Display Bearing and Range from my QTH
Ken, first tab of Preferences, make sure your latitude and longitude is correct. Remember, DX4WIN starts with the target coordinates of the DXCC entity. Some entities are very large. The "center" of the USA is somewhere in south-central Virginia I think. DX4WIN will use the STATE, GRID and/or IOTA fields to give more exact bearing/distance. Give me an example of a callsign you think is not what you expect, from your QTH. Where do you look for this information in QRZ.COM? Don't try it *to* your own QTH, you may be surprised by the results. 73 - Jim AD1C On Thu, May 15, 2014 at 6:03 PM, Kenneth Leon wrote: > SUBJECT: Errors in QSO Display Bearing and Range from my QTH > > > > Please advise me how to set DX4WIN v8.05 preferences or other settings to > obtain accurate Bearing and Range information from my NE6AA QTH to a QSO > QTH. > > > > I have set DX4WIN preferences to use www.qrz.com <http://www.qrz.com> . > The bearing and range information to a station that appears in the DX4WIN > QSO dialogue box is often far different than what I read in the Details > section of www.qrz.com <http://www.qrz.com> (which reads "From NE6AA"). -- Jim Reisert AD1C, , http://www.ad1c.us __ DX4WIN mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/dx4win Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:DX4WIN@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Dx4win] DX4WIN to LOTW
Alan, I think that's the best you can do. The program for signing/uploading logs does compare the BAND against the FREQUENCY if both fields are present in the ADIF file, and reports errors if they don't match, as you saw. In your case, you'll have to assume BAND field is correct. Are these from QSOs you logged in real time, or ones you imported? If the QSOs were imported, and you have the original source, we can try to find out how to fix them. Also note that if you export your log to ADIF or DX4WIN8 format, then import the resulting file into a new DX4WIN log, it will also help identify these kinds of problems. 73 - Jim AD1C On Thu, May 15, 2014 at 3:10 PM, ALAN ZACK k7acz wrote: > I recently made a submission to LOTW using the instruction by Jim AD1C: > > WORKING WITH LOTW and DX4WIN > > I got many error messages tagged as ERROR: FREQUENCY 0.01431 (and other such > freq notations) IS OUT OF RANGE FOR BAND 20M ON LINE xxx > > When I look up the QSO record on DX4WIN I see in the Freq (khz) box that I > had entered 14.31.
