Has anyone migrated to DXLab??  Any comments on how it compares to DX4WIN?  
I've been playing with it seems to have a lot of nice features.

I have downloaded the DXLab entire product and it seems powerful, 
indeed.  My personal problem is that I have used DX4WIN for so long it 
will be difficult to train my fingers to use a different program.  Let 
us know how your migration proceeds.  I would be particularly interested 
in any incompatibilities you might find, especially any DX4WIN features 
you might find are not available in DXLab.

I have been following this thread with a mixture of nostalgia, sympathy, 
and annoyance.  Getting the annoyance out of the way first, I've been 
appalled by the tone of some of the comments. Anyone who thinks Paul has 
gotten rich off this thing in its >20 years of existenceis deluding 
himself.  When I wrote ham radio software, back in the 1980's, getting 
paid for it was something I regarded as a way of "keeping score" - that 
effort took thousands of hours, reducing my compensation to about 5 
cents an hour.


I was the first paying customer for DX4WIN, version 0.94, and am still 
up to date.  I recognize that it is increasingly in need of updating, 
and there are somethings it won't do that I now need, but it is still a 
clean and simple to use program.  I have tried three times to migrate to 
DXlab, thinking it would give me more of what I need, and each time I 
have given up, defeated by its complexity.  I am currently working to 
get comfortablewith Logger32, which does most of the things on my 
wish-list.  I certainly appreciate everything Paul and DX4WIN have done 
for me over the years, and, who knows, I may be back.

I have been a DX4WIN user for years and I really appreciate the work that
has been done to keep it up. I have found it to be the premier package on
the market. However, once I downloaded DXLab, I was hooked. I am a bit more
of a software "techie" than most perhaps, but, there are so many features
and things that I have always thought "What if". There is a great overview
presentation on DXLab on the website (
http://www.dxlabsuite.com/Presentations/) I think for many, it will seem
overwhelming and then the choice would be DX4WIN, no question.

Not a commercial for DXLab...just my thoughts

valuable adjuncts? I venture to say, I would have walked long ago along 
with many on this reflector.


1. Is DX4WIN my program of choice? Yes, it is the most stable, easiest 
to use and demands less of my CPU than the others. Is it the most MS DOS 
3.0 looking interface? Yes!


2. Is DX4WIN is dire need of a facelift, Yes! Does it have warts? You bet.

3. Does DX4WIN need improvements. Yes!(LOTW interface, multiple cluster 
sourcing, new rig files (FT3K ), etc.)


Here's my bottom line- would I recommend DX4WIN to a new user with the 
current level of support and frequency of updates from the author, no 
way. Start with DXLabs and go forward.


In my opinion, this is a matter of continuing support of a product. If 
we want enhancements, we should pay for them but to ignore enhancements, 
withhold support or walk away for weeks/ months on end from DX4WIN isn't 
playing right with the users. To continue to sell DX4WIN to new users 
isn't going to make anyone rich but there is a unwritten contract that 
goes along with the sale of the software, which is continuing support of 
the product.

Wow, Pete!  V0.94!!  I still have my first 3.5" disk somewhere around 
here, but I think it is more like V2 or so.


I have always upgraded to whatever the latest version was within 24 
hours of its becoming available, looking forward to the latest goodies 
Paul had come up with.  I miss that feeling:  it has been exactly four 
years to the day that I downloaded V8.01 and over two-a-and-a-half years 
since V8.05.


Unlike a lot of people who don't seem to understand the software 
development world, I would gladly pay twice as much twice as often if 
Paul was able to keep up with the demands on his time, but I understand 
he has a real life and a real job and as much as DX4WIN means to us, he 
must be physically and emotionally exhausted from trying to satisfy 
everyone.


My personal problem is that gradually some of my logging wants are 
becoming needs and at some point those needs will overcome my loyalty to 
Paul and DX4WIN.  I don't need a Swiss Army Knife like DXLab, but I 
could use a few more sharp blades in my old reliable Boy Scout knife.

Yeah, I have 4000+ digital QSOs logged in DX4WIN where the mode and signal
reports are stored in the comment field, because they are not compatible
with the DX4WIN format.  There are a few conveniences, simplicity and
resistance to change that keep me using DX4WIN.

[Dx4win] DX4WIN / DXLab

Hi,
I am DX4WIN user since the beginning and logged around 30 000 QSO with it.
So I knew what I say.
The last update was some years ago, so a few things must be done.
Jim , AD1C, is doing the job vy greatly. Tnx Jim.
I do not know DXLab but since about one year I use the german UCXLOG
especially in contests. Also a great program and whats important
updated often.
Maybe some of you will try it.

[Dx4win] DXLAB Import

Hi Folks,
I got away from DX4Win. Some of it was inactivity, some of it was lack of
support. Aso soon as I saw Paul's posting, I signed right up!!

So the big thing is all of the errors on the import:
75 Simple Errors
123 Zone Exceptions
20 Country Exceptions
4264 errors were found (one that bothers me the most).

Any ideas??

FWIW, my IC-7800 now splits frequencies based on the QSX shown in the DX4WIN
spot window. Using the "ICOM 7800 F130 250Hz" stock rig file.

This is how it's always worked.

Since the previous firmware wouldn't allow a read of the split status I 
think DX4Win always sends a split off for a simplex spot and, obviously, 
split on for a split spot.

What I would like is when I log a split operation, D4W will 
automatically detect that I am split and place an appropriate 
"RX=nn,nnnkHz" entry in the 'Notes For This QSO' field.

And that's exactly what this Icom firmware upgrade will allow DX4WIN
to do, once Paul has updated the IC-7600, -7700 and -7800 rig files.

Late last year, Icom released new firmware for the IC-7800 that fulfills a
longstanding request from the DXing and contesting communities: the ability
for transceiver control applications to determine whether the transceiver is
in Split mode. This firmware update also enables a transceiver control
application to transmit CW from text without any external interface. I
extended DXLab's Commander (transceiver control) and WinWarbler (digital
modes, CW transmission, phone voice keyer) components to exploit these new
capabilities.

Recently, Icom has released new firmware updates for the IC-7600 and IC-7700
that include both the "read split" and "transmit CW from text" capabilities
described above. Jay W5JAY has confirmed that the current release of
Commander follows changes to Split made from his IC-7700's front panel. If
you have an IC-7600, have updated its firmware to the new version, and have
tested this capability with Commander, please let me know.

I'd also appreciate hearing from anyone who has used WinWarbler to transmit
CW using the the new firmware on an IC-7600 or IC-7700.
