Except for banks in other countries.

Okay, of the 250 most expensive and least efficient banking countries,
Australia is probably one of them!

Yes, in 1980 banks here always paid interest on accounts, no matter how
small, and now many accounts pay no interest worth mentioning, and they may
also charge a monthly fee, but the fact is that you can still get bank
accounts with no fees, or where the fees are entirely offset by transaction
rebates (resulting in zero fees for normal usage), and that have good
Internet Banking, online bill paying and ATM services available.

I actually have a passbook account with Bendigo Bank, which has zero fees.
It does not include an ATM card, but it does include Internet Banking. You
would have to have an Australian company and address, however.

My National Australia Bank corporate account imposed a AUD$5 (USD$2.60)
monthly fee, so I closed it. (I still have a personal account there which
is not costing me anything.)

Still, I've seen much more expensive fees on American bank Internet sites.

HSBC pays over 4% p.a., no account keeping or transaction fees (except A$15
for international telegrphic transfers), (very good) internet banking,
telephone banking, free BPAY, card and telephone customer service. So good
I opened an account last month.

I'm closing my Westpac account soon but I must say they provide very good
customer services (24/7 on the phone), good quality products and good
creditworthiness assessment for easy personal lending and credit card
services. However you pay a premium for the service with account keeping and
transaction fees.

Ragnar et al,

I think the easies way to open a bank account in Canada and Australia
would be to use HSBC. I believe it has branches in both countries, as
well as branches in many other countries.

Bank of Montreal owns Harris Banks in the USA (or vice versa) which
should facilitate opening an account in Canada. Harris Banks can be
reached at:

http://www.harrisbank.com

Several Canadian Banks have international branches that may (or may not)
be able to offer assistance. The following links may be of assistance:

http://www.royalbank.com
http://www.bmo.com
http://www.cibc.com

I hope that helps.

They are also highly inaccurate and do not even follow the banking procedures
correctly.

They removed funds from my account without authorisation until I jumped
up and down on them and had them replace the funds.

I closed my account with them. a very unprofessional Bank in my experience.

I can't tell you how you get an account as an American company - I'd
actually like to know the answer to that before I head back there - but
perhaps knowing who the big banks are there can give you somewhere to start.

In Australia we have what is called the four pillar banks, which aren't
allowed to merge. They are (in order from biggest to smallest

National Australia Bank (NAB) - http://www.nab.com.au
Commonwealth Bank - http://www.commbank.com.au
Westpac - http://www.westpac.com.au
ANZ - http://www.anz.com.au

Then we have second tier banks...

Colonial (acquired recently by Commonwealth Bank) -
http://www.colonial.com.au
St George - http://www.stgeorge.com.au

...and others, more local banks I'd say.

Any other Aussies who want to add more, do so.

BRYAN

Does anyone know how an American can open business bank accounts
in Canada and Australia? Which are the best banks to use?

Which isn't much help for the person who asked the question. Have you
ever thought of working in a post office? The short answer is, don't
bother trying. Australian banks are among the most expensive and
least efficient in the world.
