[ECOLOG-L] natural history course text

2009-03-26 Thread Gary Grossman
Greetings, Next fall I'm going to teach a 1st year course on Natural History
of Georgia for non-science students (although science majors are not
excluded). This is a sort of show and tell course focusing on everything
from geology to fauna but at an introductory level. The course is
structured around the 4 ecotypes of Georgia, mountains, Piedmont, coastal
plain, and coast islands. As texts I was planning to use the two Peterson
Guides, one to Eastern Forests and the other to the South Atlantic and Gulf
Coasts. The publisher has just told me that both of these volumes are out
of print. Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? I do have the
guide to the Piedmont, which I understand is still in press. TIA, g2

Please forward to potentially interested undergrads:

A Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) position is available in Mike
Sears's Ecology Lab at Southern Illinois University/Bryn Mawr College for the
summer of 2009. Projects for this position will be related to ongoing
experimental mesocosm studies of behavioral thermoregulation in lizards. The
participant would gain valuable experience in both the laboratory and field.
This experience could potentially lay the groundwork for a senior thesis as
well as prepare students for future graduate careers.

Our work takes place at the Sevilleta Long Term Ecological Research field
station (http://sev.lternet.edu/) in New Mexico. As a part of this experience,
participants will have the opportunity to interact with other REUs,
researchers, and graduate students from many different universities. Further,
this participant will be a part of a dynamic group of researchers from the
labs of Mike Sears (http://www.zoology.siu.edu/sears/mike_sears_home.html) and
Mike Angilletta (http://www.indstate.edu/biology/faculty/angilletta.htm).

Housing and a stipend will be provided as well as travel costs to the field
station. It should be noted that, because of the location and timing of this
work, participants should be prepared to work for some long days under hot dry
conditions.

Eligible candidates must be currently enrolled undergraduates, who are U.S.
citizens or permanent residents. Students from under-represented groups as
well as from small colleges are encouraged to apply. We are especially
interested in students who plan to pursue graduate studies in ecology,
behavior, or evolution. Please send a letter of interest, current CV or
resume, and the name of a reference via email to Mike Sears
(mse...@brynmawr.edu). Also feel free to contact Mike Sears
(mse...@brynmawr.edu) or Mike Angilletta (mangille...@isugw.indstate.edu) for
further information regarding this position. Review of applications will begin
immediately. Preference will be given to candidate that can start on or before

[ECOLOG-L] Post-doc position in predator and prey dynamics

A postdoctoral position is available for investigating the factors
affecting the size and persistence of density and trait-mediated effects
in tri-trophic food webs. The position will be supervised by Barney
Luttbeg at Oklahoma State University. The position is funded by an NSF
collaborative research grant to investigate factors affecting the
behavioral responses of an intertidal snail to the presence of predatory
crab, and to test if predictions about long-term dynamics better match
long-term observations when they have been informed by inferences based
on short-term experiments. The successful candidate will participate in
the development of models of the optimal prey responses to cues of
predation risk and the resulting effects on ecological dynamics. They
will also participate in empirical tests of the resulting theory with
potential areas of focus being the spatial distributions of prey and
predators and the effects of uncertainty for both predators and prey.

Qualifications: 1) a PhD (or soon to have a PhD) with expertise in
ecology, behavioral ecology, or modeling; 2) experience with individual
based modeling approaches such as dynamic state variable models and
genetic algorithms; 3) programming skills; 4) familiarity with model
selection approaches, and 5) an interest in integrating behavior and
ecology.
