Ecology Field Research Interns B4Warmed Overview: Northern Minnesota is a focal point of potential climate warming impacts because it sits at the transition between boreal and temperate forest biomes. B4WARMED (Boreal Forest Warming at an Ecotone in Danger) is a unique manipulative experiment that warms plants and soil in the field to examine tree seedling and germinant response to warming with respect to physiology, phenology, growth, and survival. Position overview: We seek undergraduate or newly graduated students with a background or interest in biology, ecology, physiology, environmental science, biophysics, forestry, or a related field for paid field research internships ($10/hr). Interns are needed primarily from August through November. Few short-term (one month) positions also available. Typical work days are eight hours Monday through Friday, however some tasks require early morning, evening, or weekend work. A valid drivers license is required. Personal vehicles helpful but not required. Variety of tasks to be completed, split between data collection, site maintenance, and laboratory work. Responsibilities: Collect biotic and abiotic data in field and laboratory settings in accordance with established protocols Measure plant growth, physiology, and phenology Routine maintenance of field sites, field instruments, and research equipment. Limited data entry Aiding principle investigators and graduate students as needed. Desired qualifications: 1) Eagerness to work hard in an outdoor setting. 2) Capacity to collect data following established protocols. 3) Familiarity with plant and tree species of northern Minnesota. 4) Willingness to work well and play well with others. 5) Curiosity and passion for the natural world. Research sites: Field work will be split between research sites at the Cloquet Forestry Center in Cloquet, MN (http://cfc.cfans.umn.edu/) and the Hubachek Wilderness Research Center near Ely, MN. Both research sites are in beautiful forested settings and provide access to the natural areas of northern Minnesota including the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. We are looking for a field assistant who can pay their own way in a collecting trip to Guyana for the dates of July 18-August 18, 2012. The work will include collection of dragonflies, cockroaches, termites, and arachnids for phylogenetic and ecological studies. Research Technician Grassland Ecosystem Ecology School of Life Sciences Arizona State University We are seeking an outstanding full-time research technician to support an active research project in the Sala Lab. Research activities will involve 5 to 7 trips per year to the Jornada Research Station in New Mexico, each trip ranging from 1 to 4 weeks in duration. During field campaigns, the Research Technician will work with PI, graduate and undergraduate students in various activities including vegetation and soil sampling as well as maintenance of long-term rainfall manipulation experiments. Field work will be complemented with laboratory work, data entry and data analysis. A successful candidate will have a Bachelors degree in a related field (e.g., Ecology, Biology, Soil Science). Experience in field biology and laboratory work will be desirable. The successful applicant would be primarily based in the lab of Dr. Osvaldo Sala in the School of Life Sciences at Arizona State University. Postdoctoral Associate – Department of Ecology, Evolution and Behavior – University of Minnesota, Saint Paul A postdoctoral associate position is available in the lab of Dr. Jeannine Cavender-Bares at the University of Minnesota to investigate urban plant diversity. This is a large, collaborative project examining the extent to which similar management practices among homeowners in cities leads to homogenization in plant functional and phylogenetic diversity. It is part of a larger project examining ecosystem carbon and nitrogen dynamics in urban regions across six metropolitan regions funded by the NSF Macrosystems Biology Program. The position will involve collaboration among multiple labs (both within the University of Minnesota and the Carey Institute of Ecosystem Studies, USDA Forest Service, Florida International University, University of Vermont, Clark University, UC Irvine, Indiana University, Marine Biological Lab, and Arizone State). The postdoctoral associate will be responsible for analyzing functional trait information and conducting analyses of functional and phylogenetic diversity of yard communities across six metropolitan regions in the US. The post doctoral associate will be expected to submit manuscripts based on the research to peer-reviewed journals and to present the results at national and international scientific meetings. Candidates will require a strong analytical background and an ability to manage large data sets. Work will conducted be at the University of Minnesota campus in Saint Paul. Field Operations Manager – Domain 1 - Northeast Overview The National Ecological Observatory Network, Inc. (NEON™) is a $430 million dollar observatory project dedicated to understanding how changes in climate, land use and invasive species impact ecology. For the next three decades NEON will collect a comprehensive range of ecological data on a continental scale across 20 eco-climatic domains representing US ecosystems. NEON will use cutting edge technology including an airborne observation platform that will capture images of regional landscapes and vegetation; mobile, relocatable, and fixed data collection sites with automated ground sensors to monitor soil and atmosphere; and trained field crews who will observe and sample populations of diverse organisms and collect soil and water data. A leading edge cyberinfrastructure will calibrate, store and publish this information. The Observatory will grow to 300+ personnel and will be the first of its kind designed to detect and enable forecasting of ecological change at continental scales. Summary The NEON Field Operations Manager will be responsible for managing all personnel and activities coordinated from the field office. Field office activities include preventative and corrective maintenance of scientific instrumentation, field observations, specimen collection, handling, preparation and shipment according to NEON scientific protocols. The Field Operations Manager reports to the Director of Field Operations at NEON headquarters. Location The Domain 1 Field Operations Manager’s primary work location is near Petersham, MA.
