[ECOLOG-L] Plant sample (seeds) storage for DNA barcoding?

2015-06-12 Thread Eli Rose
Hi all,

I am collaborating on a project that likely requires the use of DNA
barcoding to identify seed species (Rubus spp). We are collecting samples
from seed rain traps (passively catching bird poop) and then going through
samples under a dissecting scope to separate seeds from other organic
matter. The seeds can be in the traps for up to 2 weeks prior to
collecting, then another 1-3 weeks before they are separated from the other
organic matter found in the traps.

 My questions are below:
1) How should we store the seeds prior to genetic work (from 1 to 12
months)?

2) Can anyone suggest a good paper that explores different methods for
storing *plant* material prior to genetic analyses?

Many thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Eli

[ECOLOG-L] Question about Ecology M.S. Programs Germany

2015-06-12 Thread Thibault Wartelet
Hi all,

As some of you may know, Germany offers free, or relatively inexpensive,
degrees to it's citizens as
well as foreigners. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with
German Ecology master's
programs or can offer information about them, especially ones with an emphasis
in marine ecology. I
am also interested in the application process and evaluation as well as how the
degree would be
viewed by American universities if I decided after to apply to PhD programs.
Any other general
information (including recommendations) would also be great.

Thanks!

[ECOLOG-L] Best methods for camera-trap data management?

2015-06-12 Thread Brent Pease
Hi all,

I will soon be retrieving cameras from the field and will be faced with the
task of data management. I'm hoping for input on organization (and eventual
analysis) of camera photos. Has anyone used the procedures described by
Sanderson and Harris (2012)?

Thank you for your time.

[ECOLOG-L] Do you pay out-of-pocket for science? Scispends survey extended

2015-06-12 Thread Brett Favaro
Dear scientists,

A couple months ago, we posted an invitation to contribute to our #Scispends
survey, in which we are investigating whether scientists pay out-of-pocket to
conduct scientific research. We have had excellent and thoughtful responses,
and
have decided to keep the survey open until June 30, 2015.

If you have not already responded, we would greatly appreciate if you would
take
our survey. Whether or not you have spent a lot of personal money on research,
your experiences will be valuable to the project.

We hope that by collecting data on this topic, we will start a conversation on
this important issue. Our objective is to analyze and present these results
within a scientific publication.

The survey link, as well as information on informed consent, is here:
http://goo.gl/forms/ZAtzAqGRMw

We appreciate all participants, and encourage you to circulate this survey
within your professional networks.

All data will be completely anonymous, and we do not ask any questions that
will
enable your responses to be personally identifiable.

If you have any questions for us, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Edward

[ECOLOG-L] Looking for mice from Maryland, Delaware, and Pennsylvania

2015-06-12 Thread Amanda Chunco
I’m looking for tissues samples of house mice (Mus musculus) from
throughout the mid-Atlantic. Because I am hoping to sample populations
from across a wide geographic area, I am looking for people who are
currently trapping house mice (a very common pest species in homes and
barns), who might be able to contribute to my study. If you are interested
in helping out with this study, please email me at achu...@elon.edu and
I'd be happy to provide more details about this study.

Cheers!
