Graduate student positions – Carbon cycling and oxygen dynamics in coastal
benthic systems (closes 1/15/2019)

Two graduate student positions (MS or PhD) at the University of Virginia
are available to study carbon cycling and oxygen dynamics in coastal
benthic systems, including seagrass meadows, permeable sands, macroalgal
mats, and tidal flats and creeks.

Students will be advised by Peter Berg (http://faculty.virginia.edu/berg/)
and join the highly interdisciplinary Department of Environmental Sciences
(http://www.evsc.virginia.edu/). Applicants are anticipated to have a solid
background in aquatic ecology, environmental science, or related
disciplines, and have an interest in working with underwater in situ
sensors, including aquatic eddy covariance instrumentation.

Ability to work as part of a team is a must, and the student’s research
will include a mixture of field work, data analysis, and synthesis. Most of
the work will be done as part of the Virginia Coast Reserve Long-Term
Ecological Research program (https://www.vcrlter.virginia.edu/). In
addition, national and international trips to work with collaborators can
be expected.

Students who show acceptable progression in their academic work are
guaranteed full funding for their degree (2.5 years for MS and 5 years for
PhD). This support is comprised of a mixture of teaching and research
assistantships that together provide highly competitive student stipends,
tuition, and health insurance.

The University of Virginia graduate school application deadline is January
15, 2019, for enrollment in the Fall of 2019, but those interested should
contact Peter Berg (p...@virginia.edu) in advance and provide a brief
description on their background and motivation.

With some options, we could create a proposal to our administration to sponsor

Thanks for your consideration.

[ECOLOG-L] Sabbatical teaching replacement at Utah State University

2018-09-19 Thread Peter Adler
The purpose of this message is to gauge potential interest in a one-semester
teaching position for fall, 2019 in the Department of Wildland Resources at
Utah State University. I am hoping this might appeal to post-docs with a
background in plant ecology who are looking to gain independent teaching
experience. The primary course that needs to be taught is "Wildland Plants
and Ecosystems," a 4-credit course with lectures focusing on the
biogeography and dynamics of important ecosystems of western North America,
and a lab focused on sight-identification of the dominant plant species in
those ecosystems. The department could cover at least 50% of a typical
post-doc salary to complement to an existing source of support. For
candidates who need full salary support, we may be able to add a second
course, "Range Plant Taxonomy and Function," a 3-credit course currently
taught almost entirely in the field. The instructor would have full access
to all existing course materials. If you might be interested in this
opportunity, or have questions about the courses or your qualifications,
please contact me (peter.adler [at] usu.edu).

Description
Are you interested in understanding why epidemics occur in some places but not
others? Many studies have shown that infectious diseases do not occur at
random; outbreaks occur under specific environmental conditions facilitated by
specific human activities and behaviors. To effectively control and anticipate
epidemics, it is indispensable to understand the ecological factors that better
explain the occurrence of an outbreak. Disease ecology helps to determine how
changes in the environment are associated with emerging infectious diseases. MS
and/or PhD student positions are available for Spring 2019/Fall 2019 to conduct
research in the areas of biogeography and ecology of infectious diseases. The
intended research will use ecological niche modeling and other analytical tools
to study infectious diseases affecting humans and wildlife. Potential research
topics include rabies, vector-borne diseases, mange, and others. In addition to
research work, responsibilities will include acquiring teaching experience,
raising extramural funding for international internships and research work, and
mentoring of undergraduate students. We are seeking highly motivated students
to be part of a research team investigating diseases using theory and methods
from ecology and biogeography. Preference will be given to candidates with
evident passion for these topics and quantitative and writing skills.

The positions are based within Dr. Luis Escobar at the Laboratory of Disease
Ecology and Biogeography, in the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation,
which is affiliated to the Global Change Center and part of the College of
Natural Resources and the Environment, the No. 1 ranked natural resources
program in the US (by USA Today) for three years running.

The Escobar’s group is highly collaborative and works with researchers in
universities across the US, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, and with state,
federal, and non-governmental agencies. International students are accepted.
This position includes full tuition and salary support. Minorities and
underrepresented groups in STEM are encouraged to apply.

Virginia Tech’s main campus is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, in the heart of
the Blue Ridge Mountains. The New River Valley offers the charm of a small town
combined with the modern conveniences of a metropolitan area. The thriving
community boasts a plethora of unique and chain restaurants and stores,
symphonies, theatres, historical attractions, museums, a vibrant night-life,
sporting events, outdoor recreation activities, and a temperate climate. We
have mountains to the west, the ocean to the east, and Washington D.C. to the
north.

Qualifications
The Laboratory has a long history of multidisciplinary research. Students from
diverse academic backgrounds with interest in joining the lab are encouraged to
apply (e.g., B.S. in wildlife, ecology, computer sciences, statistics,
mathematics, or related fields are welcomed). Applicants must have a strong
work ethic; quantitative, oral, and written communication skills; high
attention to detail; the ability to work independently and collaboratively
within a culturally diverse team; and capacity to work long hours. A prior DVM
or a MS in ecology, epidemiology, or related biological or health sciences
would be a plus, although not required.

To apply
Send a single pdf including: 1) a cover letter of no more than two pages that
highlights your research interests, interest in graduate school, interest in
infectious diseases, and why we should consider your application; 2) curriculum
vitae; 3) unofficial transcripts; 4) sample of scientific writing (e.g., a
manuscript in preparation, an undergraduate thesis, published manuscript as
first author); and 5) contact information for 3 references who can explain your
research skills and interests. Application consideration will begin on October
20, 2018 and will continue until the positions are filled. References will only
be contacted after applicants are notified.

[ECOLOG-L] Course: Speciation Genomics

2018-09-19 Thread Carlo Pecoraro
Dear all,

still a few spots available in our Speciation Genomics Workshop:
https://www.physalia-courses.org/courses-workshops/course37/

When: 3-7 December 2018

Where: Botanical Museum/FU University Berlin (Germany)

Instructors:

Dr. Mark Ravinet (CEES, Univeristy of Oslo, Norway)
Dr. Joana Meier (University of Cambridge, UK).

Overview:

This course will provide a thorough introduction to the growing field of
speciation genomics. The course aims to take students from the initial steps
required for handling raw sequencing data to demographic modelling and
inference of genome-wide signatures of selection and introgression. Through
a combination of lectures covering key theoretical and conceptual topics,
alongside hands-on exercises, participants will learn the most important
computational approaches used in speciation genomics. This will include a
heavy emphasis on data visualization and intepretation. After completing of
the course, the participants should be able to begin using NGS data to shed
light on the genomic aspects of speciation in their study system of choice.

[ECOLOG-L] Postdoctoral Scholar–Dryland Soil Nitrogen Cycling and Ecosystem Ecology

2018-09-19 Thread Pete Homyak
Postdoctoral Scholar–Dryland Soil Nitrogen Cycling and Ecosystem Ecology
Center for Conservation Biology, University of California at Riverside

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scholar to investigate dynamics and controls
on soil N trace gas emissions and cycling in southern California drylands.
The researcher will work on two projects: 1) a network of wetting
experiments distributed across a nitrogen deposition gradient from Los
Angeles to the eastern edge of Joshua Tree National Park and 2) a recently
initiated seasonal rainfall manipulation in a 30-year post-fire Pinyon
Juniper woodland. Research activities will include substantial field work
and opportunities for integrating field data with process models.
Instruments available for the project include field-deployable automated
soil chambers and several fast-response analyzers: NO, N2O isotopomers,
13C-CO2, 13C-CH4, NH3, and water isotopes. Collaborative
opportunities are
encouraged to integrate field work with soil molecular biology, atmospheric
modeling, isotope geochemistry, remote sensing, and/or eddy covariance
approaches. Development of individual research activities and collaborations
with others is encouraged. Candidates will need excellent preparation in
field ecosystem ecology, ecohydrology, biogeochemistry, or soil science.
Candidates with experience using or collaborating with environmental sensing
techniques, remote and in-situ data integration, or land surface modeling
approaches are encouraged to apply.

The position is based at the University of California, Riverside (UCR), in
both the labs of Pete Homyak (https://envisci.ucr.edu/faculty/homyak.html)
and Darrel Jenerette
(http://plantbiology.ucr.edu/people/faculty/jenerette.html). The successful
candidate will provide leadership to the research team, which includes
graduate and undergraduate students, technicians, postdocs, and other
faculty. Riverside is an excellent location for ecosystem research
featuring large gradients resulting from maritime effects, elevation, and
human development. UCR provides valuable training opportunities—in addition
to opportunities with both lab groups, UCR has a vibrant postdoctoral
association and broader community that values diversity. Salary and benefits
are competitive and based on experience. The position will be offered as an
annual contract with an expectation the position will be renewed for two
years. Applications should be sent as a single PDF containing cover letter
with qualifications and research interests, CV, and contact information for
three references to either Pete Homyak (phom...@ucr.edu) or Darrel Jenerette
(darrel.jenere...@ucr.edu). Initial review of candidates will begin Nov 1,
2018 with a start date on or following January 2, 2019. We encourage
applications from participants with backgrounds underrepresented in higher
education.

The University of California is an Equal Opportunity / Affirmative Action
Employer with a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of
excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff. All qualified
applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race,
color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin,
age, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic
protected by law. UCR is a world-class research university with an
exceptionally diverse undergraduate student body. Its mission is explicitly
linked to providing routes to educational success for underrepresented and
first generation college students. The campus is located within one hour of
downtown Los Angeles, a city that provides world-class cultural
opportunities. Riverside also provides easy access to numerous outdoor
recreational areas, including forest, alpine, ocean, and desert environments.
