Re: [ECOLOG-L] Hollywood star wants to study whales, jellyfish and a clarification....
list members first of all i wanted to thank all the people that responded to me based on my comments on this post to ecolog-l a few days ago. some interesting comments. most were also copied to back to the list. so, i did not summarize here. one person that did not send her post to the listwon't share it hear, far too nasty, completely misinterpreted my intentions. i did not name names and i should have also said i was not including actress alison sudol either. by the way, i did not know this, but thanks to professor jerry howard of the u. of new orleans i learned this: "However, we need to cultivate those whose interest is genuine and Alison Sudol is one. She is a goodwill ambassador for IUCN.". so, i wanted to thank him for that update. kudos to her. as it seems or so i read that money/income seems to be getting more and more concentrated at the upper end of society world-wide, i am just hoping that these fewer and fewer people that have more than they or anyone would ever need to live on, would donate more of their money to the many causes around the world that could use more of their wealth. i was not suggesting that anyone needing or wanting money for their cause should turn away a penny. that wouldn't make too much sense. no, we may never know what someone's real motive is in giving away their money or time. in the end, i guess it doesn't really matter. also, didn't mention any names, so i wasn't slamming any one individual and i really had nobody in mind. i have written letters and e-mails to celebrities asking them for their money or time. have been much more successful on getting some time than money. with that said, was not trying to upset anyone on this fine list. also wanted to add thishave seen some very fine listservs come and go over the past 20 years. some of them were so good and so helpful, am not really sure whey they disappeared, as they were still very active when they did disappear. ecolog-l, a testament to esa and ecolog-l moderator david inouye, ph.d., it just seems to keep moving along.... thanks and have a great thursday. mike nolan On 4/18/2017 11:54 AM, Jerome Joseph Howard wrote: However, we need to cultivate those whose interest is genuine and Alison Sudol is one. Re: [ECOLOG-L] Hollywood star wants to study whales, jellyfish
erik this is not about you personally in any way. there are some rich people out there, some from hollywood, some from pro sports, etc. that do a great deal for conservation and other causes. this is not about them really either. i'm just a little sick of rich people saying they want to do things or worse yet, givingwhat to most of us might seem like a huge sum of money to a certain cause, but it's really nothing in end to them. am not saying their "donations" are not worth something to the cause they are funding. i'm not suggesting someone give all their money away and live on the street, would like to see some millionaire type give enough money away so that it impacts their lifestyle in some way. that would really show me how they feel about the cause they say that they are behind. most of these rich folks, especially athletes and hollywood types make donations to further market themselves. they wouldn't consider doing it anonymously, that would defeat the purpose. i hope this is just me being very grumpy early in the morning here. thanks. mike nolan On 4/17/2017 9:26 PM, Erik Hoffner wrote: Today I asked a Hollywood star what she'd like to do if she were not so busy entertaining the masses, she said "I would love to study whales and other marine mammals, either in the North Pacific Ocean off the coast of Washington and British Columbia, or frankly anywhere, jellyfish off the coast of Japan..." I bought the packet from Carolina Biological. their phone is: 800.334.5551 *Things in this packet included some classic studies in Ecology/Biology. I am very familiar with work of EO Wilson and David Quamann- however, I feel that most of their work are more in alignment with a conservation biology or environmental management. Do you have any recommendations on popular science-type readings that are more pertinent to ecology theory, biological communities, ecosystems and biomes, etc? The class period is 1 hr and 15 mins. Reading component is going to be "homework" (shorter articles are preferred) but the discussions take place in-class. So, any reading material that can drive a conservation/debate would be ideal. I would love to heard those ideas too. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks... [ECOLOG-L] Inquiry about a group of High School Students....Marine Biology Field Experience
List Members Apologies for cross-posting. I have a group request from a private, all boys High School out of St. Louis, MO. They would be interested in a Marine Biology/Sea Turtle experience in the southern or southeast U.S. Dates, approximately, and with some flexibilityNovember 8-November 14, 2015. One big obstacle for them is sheer group size. The group leader says he will be bring approximately 140 male High School Students. Does anyone on the list have suggestions for an organization that would have the interest, facilities and staff to handle a group like this? They would be willing to use a local hotel for their housing needs. So, I'm looking for on-site resourcesBoats, experienced Guides/Marine Biology or other Science related Instructors and other Instructional Resources. Again, they can travel to any site along the Gulf coast, or se Atlantic Coast. The Florida Keys would also work very well for them. This Group would be pleased to work with a College or University that has a Marine facility. not a requirement though. Also, is not allowed by Aministration to fly. They will be traveling by buses and can travel a great distance. Leaving the U.S. is not an option, so they are limited to the entire Gulf Coast OR the southeast U.S. for their November experience. I don't think that a cruise in the Caribbean would be an option, unless there is something out there that I am not aware of. Thank you in advance. Re: [ECOLOG-L] Loss of field-based courses
Thanks for bringing this topic up Dr. Inouye. You know what they say"Specialists learn more and more about less and less until someday they will know everything about nothing". It's even happening at the High School level. I was once given carte blanche to to re-design an ailing advanced Biology program at a high school. Was heavily criticized for choosing Ecology and some of the classic discoveries in Biology as the theme of the class. Parents were the biggest critics. They just didn't see how the content of my course was going to get their children in medical school. They got over it and it was a good decision. I tried to use Biochemistry and Genetics without losing focus on the bigger picture. It was a fairly large, rural high school and I was quite surprised every spring when I would put a small bowl of tadpoles on my desk, and count the number of kids that didn't have a clue as to what they were. Pretty sad state of affairs Have a now retired friend from Penn State who did most of his research on Peccaries, he told me on several occasions that he was what was left of a dying breed. I found his work, and especially that dealing with hibernation biology and physiology to be incredibly fascinating. Thank for anyone's feedback on this all important issue. Am copying this to several High School Bio lists and am curious what their feelings are on this. Thank you. Mike Nolan On 5/14/2014 10:07 AM, David L. McNeely wrote: I have been observing this for some time now. Organisms and their habitats are being written out of biology, so far as direct experience with them is concerned. We soon will have no means of knowing what is going on in nature, as no one will be investigating nature, or even have a clue as to how to do so. It is somewhat disconcerting to attend conferences and witness paper presentations where it is clear that the presenter has never seen a living, wild specimen of the organism being reported on and would not know how to go about finding one. The Southwestern Association of Naturalists has recently approved, to be awarded for the first time at its annual meeting in San Diego next April, a new Student Field Natural History Award. Details concerning this competition will be available on the SWAN web site and in the annual call for papers, but essentially it provides a prestigious award and a monetary prize for the outstanding paper which includes a substantial field component presented by a student member at the annual meeting. More details will appear on the SWAN web site and in the annual call for papers for next year. To qualify for the competition, the investigation reported on must have been carried out on the natural history (essentially ecology and evolution) of organisms in the southwestern portion of North America (as defined by SWAN) where they occur in their environments. I would encourage ESA and other societies to consider implementing awards for field based studies. David McNeely David Inouye wrote: I'm posting this for a colleague who wanted to remain anonymous but would be interested in your comments. We've suffered the same loss of field-based courses at the University of Maryland, but I think for other reasons. David Inouye My ecology/evolution/plant diversity students are always shocked when I tell them about one way in which the shift towards genomics in ecology and evolution is largely responsible for the disappearance of almost all field courses in my department (and probably elsewhere). I don't think that this is exactly what you had in mind regarding an example of "how rapidly and significantly ecological science and evolution are changing", but I don't think it's too off-track. We now have six evolutionary biologists in my department (including myself), and only one of us (me) does any field work other than to find-and-grind organisms for genomics work. The rest is computer modeling and lab work, conducting Petri-dish and vial-based experiments with flies or microorganisms. Not surprisingly, these lab-based faculty are not only pale and wan, but they're completely uninterested in -- and dismiss as too "noisy" -- field experiments aimed to detect the process or outcome of natural selection in wild populations. So, not only are they unable to teach field-based courses (or even to run local field trips), but they're now raising a cohort of graduate students who are exactly the same. While genomics can answer certain kinds of questions in evolutionary ecology and detect phylogenetic patterns that population-based studies of natural selection cannot, I think it's really important to inform undergraduates about this major political and financial shift in evolutionary research, and to point out the kinds of questions that cannot be addressed with genomics. Invariably, these students are very surpri

Re: [ECOLOG-L] Bees and Facebook...Africanized Honey Bees and Mute Swans....
Debra and Others You'll have to look into other states aside from Florida for impacts of the Africanized Honey Bee on Honey Bee stocks that we all depend on. I don't think it has been nearly as big a problem as researchers and probably the media, in particular, were predicting some years ago. It is an interesting issue that you may want to consider adding to this story? Obviously many spin-offs with the topic of introduced species http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/mg113 Because the U.S. beekeeping industry was informed and prepared for the African honey bee invasion, it has not suffered extensive damage. For example, African bees have had no significant economic impact on honey production by beekeepers in Florida. The introduction of African bees in Florida has caused some alteration in beekeeping practices. These alterations were encouraged through Best Management Practices (BMPs) provided by the Apiary Section the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Division of Plant Industry (http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/plantinsp/ apiary/apiary.html <http://www.doacs.state.fl.us/pi/plantinsp/apiary/apiary.html>). The BMPs were provided to the beekeeping industry in an effort to minimize the impact of African bees to traditional beekeeping. Beekeeping practices, as outlined in the BMPs, include modifications such as re-queening more often, purchasing marked queens from a reputable European breeder, and careful observation of colonies. Although the African honey bee has been introduced only recently to Florida, it appears that keeping managed European colonies may help keep African bees out of new territory by providing intense competition for resources. Therefore, beekeepers will become one of the principle resources to whom the general public and agriculturalists can turn as they confront the African honey bee. On the topic of introduced speciesquite a controversy in some Michigan counties right at the moment regarding Mute Swans. In at least one Michigan county state game officials are recommending that ALL Mute Swans be killed. [ECOLOG-L] National Bird Day....Jan 5
List Members and Friends of Rainforest and Reef... Not a holiday that will get you off of Teaching for a day, but worth looking at. Some striking Bird images, actually all endangered species. I believe they missed an important one in Brazil's spectacular Hyacinth Macaw...the largest of the 17 remaining Macaw species and only 5000 left in the wild. Why? Great question and I'm glad you asked. Certainly deforestation, but also...in the pet trade, Hyacinths can bring from 7000.00-12,000.00USD/bird. Quite a motivator for a Brazilian living in very difficult economic conditions, not to mention, profits made by all middle men involved. See the 2nd link below. Hycacinth images can be found here. Should you be interested in seeing one in their native habitat and contributing directly to a worthy program working towards bring their numbers back, please feel free to contact me. Rarely would I guarantee Animal sightings, but in this program, the bulk of your fees will also go towards projects protecting the Brazilian Jaguar and also the Golden Lion Tamarin as well. You will see all 3 of these endangered species during the Research Expedition. Yes, we make a very small profit here to help sustain our continued efforts. While, not an advocate of Birds in captivity, it seems that as Humans, we do like to have them as "pets". I'm not making this post to prevent this, but I have adamantly tried to discourage it. Any captive breeding programs are certainly a plus for Birds in the wild. Even in Grand Rapids, MI, we now have a couple of people breeding Hyacinths. The coming years will tell us if there is still enough genetic diversity left in the wild to maintain and build on what we still have and whether or not we can curb the present and past rates of deforestation in this very sensitive and valuable ecosystems that these Birds call home. http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/blogs/14-endangered-birds-worth-tweeting-about http://www.biosferabrasil.com/meu_produto.php?cod=168&idioma=i Still on the topic of Birds, and especially Macaws. We have been working with Kurt Holle and Rainforest Expeditons at the Tambopata Research Center out of Madre de Dios, Peru for some time now. The main Lodge at the TRC is very close to the largest clay-lick in all of South America. Clay-licks are extremely important to Parrots and other Birds, as they contain vital salts and other minerals. You can view them with ease at the TRC in a very non-intrusive manner. Participants in any programs there are given the opportunity to collect and submit observational data that is actually used by Researchers each year in the monitoring of populations. http://www.perunature.com/tambopata-research-center.html Groups are certainly welcome, but traveling alone or with a friend or spouse is certainly a viable option. Thank you and have a great weekend. Yes, stay warmpossibly some of the included images will help! [ECOLOG-L] Why NOT to Get a Parrot as a Pet....
List Members This will sound a completely hypocritical and I understand. Some of you know that we have 2 Macaws here, both were captive bred, one was planned, the other was orphaned and taken in. I have lobbied across the U.S. and on lists like these against having Parrots of any kind as pets and Birds for that matter. While the Scarlet Macaw and Blue and Gold Macaw here seem to be doing quite well in captivity, not a day goes by when I wish it could have been another way for both of them. Having a flock of them fly over your head, screaming their heads off in the wild is one of those moments you just will never forget. I have read about and seen too many times some of the issues brought up in the following documentary that airs today on PBS: "Parrot Confidential," a documentary premiering on PBS "Nature" on Nov.13 (today). http://www.mnn.com/earth-matters/animals/stories/new-pbs-documentary-uncovers-the-heartbreaking-plight-of-captive We are actively and financially involved in two Macaw projects in the wild. Brazil has only 5000 Hyacinth Macaws left in the wild, they are the largest of the 17 species of Macaws left on Earth. People are now learning how to breed them in captivity, which is a good thing for those left in the wild. Selling for 8000.00-10,000.00 per Bird, the motivation behind taking them out of the wild is obvious. Is there enough genetic diversity left in the wild to save them, time will tell us. And obviously there are issues involved here aside from the pet trade, habitat loss being one at the top of the list. http://animals.nationalgeographic.com/animals/birds/macaw/ In the Peruvian Amazon we are participating with the Tambopata Research Center in their work to help sustain and increase populations of not only native Macaws, but other Parrots and Primates as well. Yes, we have programs at both sites and they are unusual in that participants can see their money going directly towards the Conservation efforts taking place. I would like to add, aside from seeing Hyacinths in the wild in Brazil, and I rarely guarantee Animal sightingsone can also contribute to Conservation projects involving the endangered Golden Lion Tamarin (a Primate) and also the Brazilian Jaguar. This also includes a visit to the World's largest wetlandthe Pantanal and an opportunity to see Giant River Otters. Thank you, have a great remainder of the week and let me know if there are questions.
