Stat Job Market (Academia) Question

2000-05-27 Thread Vmcw

Hi! I'm posting this here as it looks like this newsgroup is frequented by
some stat professors. If anyone can suggest a better outlet, please let me
know.

Here's my question(s):

I'm in the Decision Sciences Dept. at Drexel University (in the business
school), and for two years we've tried to hire a statistician at the
Assistant/Associate level. I'm been surprised by the fact that we've received
very few applications (< 15, maybe < 10 in each year) from PhD-qualified
statisticians, and haven't succeeded in hiring anyone. A friend in another
b-school has had a similar experience. So I'm curious... does anyone have a
sense for the stat job market? Specifically:

Are fewer students coming out of Stat programs?
Are more students going into industry (data mining, biostat, etc.)
Or. is it just the fact that we're a business school?
Or. ???

Also, for my own interests I'd be interested in knowing if there is anything
published regarding the numbers of graduates over the last few years, where
they were placed (like industry vs. academia), starting salaries, etc.

Any insights or suggestions on how to generate a stronger pool this year would
be appreciated. (We haven't gotten involved in the recruiting effort at the
August ASA meetings, and we will definitely do that this year.)

Thanks in advance!

Tom McWilliams
Associate Prof; Drexel U.

Questions:
1. Where did you advertise the opening? Amstat News?
2. What benefits did you offer? Was the salary competitive or lower than the
market?
3. How was the work load? How many classes people have to teach per semester?
4. How picky were you in screening applicants? Did you require the candidates
to have business knowledge (since you're in business school)? Did you ask
candidates about topics that are not too "sexy" anymore?
5. What kind of special programs do you have for new recruits?
6. Did you provide any spouse job assistance program?

Personally, I find business schools to be "strange". I just don't feel like
"at home". Plus, they do ask weird questions (this is just my opinion as a
statistician who doesn't do business stats).

Re: Stat Job Market (Academia) Question

2000-05-27 Thread Vmcw

>T.S. Lim said: (and Tom answers!)

>Questions:
>1. Where did you advertise the opening? Amstat News?

DSI (Decision Sciences Institute) (a "business" association oriented towards
quantitative types) and AMSTAT news and 1st year, just DSI due to a screwup the
2nd year. I understand that skipping AMSTAT news would contribute to our
problem the 2nd year, but not the 1st.

>2. What benefits did you offer? Was the salary competitive or lower than the
>market?

Competitive for business schools, I believe... which means probably better than
math depts. But in any case this wouldn't effect the number of applicants, I
would think, as the salary (as is the case for most jobs) wasn't advertised.
Obviously, a low salary would effect our ability to successfully hire within
our applicant pool.

That doesn't surprise me. I had no real problems with the transition, but I
know that some folks have a strong desire to stay in math or stat depts.

Skipping Amstat News is really bad. :) I'm just curious as to how your ad

won't even bother to apply.

So, 6 courses a year? The load in major schools is 4 courses/year.

This issue is related to how you write the ad. If you say "will consider

You might even want to advertise in Institute of Mathematical

mathematical type.

No, it is courses per term which counts. This is strictly
equivalent.

This might lose you quite a few applicants. There are quite
a few theoreticians in business schools, and theoreticians
are the ones who can handle unusual applied problems. In
fact, many business schools people more mathematical than
most statistics departments want. It might help if you
pointed out the contacts at both your school and at others
in the neighborhood.

This is not surprising. That is where the stimulation and
new ideas are generally found. As I said before, some
business schools have a substantial faculty who are of
this type, but still it pays to have the other contacts.

I did take some computer science courses while taking my stats degree.
If you know the fundamentals of programming, you can apply them to any
programming language, including SAS programming. I think programming
knowledge is a significant factor for getting a job in applied
statistics analysis positions.

I would agree but employers don't always. Many want someone who can
start cranking out SAS code yesterday, not someone to train.

I would agree that once upon a time Stat MS's ended up being SAS
programmers, but these days that has changed quite a bit.

Pharmaceutical companies used to essentially ignore Stat MS's or turn them
into SAS programmers; however, at Ely Lilly at least (don't work there but
know those who do), Stat MS's have been give a more prominent role in data
analysis - similar to what PhD's might have done years ago. I don't know
about other companies in the area. I've been told most MD's won't talk to
MS statisticians, but that may be an out-dated generalization.

In the industrial statistics area Stat MS's are highly desired. I would say
most manufacturing companies primarily seek out Stat MS's and sometimes
will actually turn away PhD's (I know of a specific example where a large
automotive company refused to even interview a PhD applicant because they
felt the applicant would be sufficiently challenged). With the recent bloom
of Six Sigma activity in many corporations around the world a Stat MS is a
prime target to become a Master Black Belt and be heavily involved in Black
Belt development and quality improvement. Talk to anyone who works at GE or
Allied Signal - they'll tell you how prized the Master Black Belts are.

You can also call Tracey Gmoser at SmithHanley (a headhunting firm with
lots of stats placement experience) - 212-687-9696. She has LOT's of
experience placing MS statisticians in all sorts of fields and can give you
a real good feeling for the opportunities out there. They're website is

I would agree that once upon a time Stat MS's ended up being SAS programmers,
but these days that has changed quite a bit.
Pharmaceutical companies used to essentially ignore Stat MS's or turn
them into SAS programmers; however, at Ely Lilly at least (don't work there
but know those who do), Stat MS's have been give a more prominent role
in data analysis - similar to what PhD's might have done years ago. I don't
know about other companies in the area. I've been told most MD's won't
talk to MS statisticians, but that may be an out-dated generalization.
In the industrial statistics area Stat MS's are highly desired. I would
say most manufacturing companies primarily seek out Stat MS's and sometimes
will actually turn away PhD's (I know of a specific example where a large
automotive company refused to even interview a PhD applicant because they
felt the applicant would be sufficiently challenged). With the recent bloom
of Six Sigma activity in many corporations around the world a Stat MS is
a prime target to become a Master Black Belt and be heavily involved in
Black Belt development and quality improvement. Talk to anyone who works
at GE or Allied Signal - they'll tell you how prized the Master Black Belts
are.
You can also call Tracey Gmoser at SmithHanley (a hea

I did take some computer science courses while taking my stats degree.
If you know the fundamentals of programming, you can apply them to any
programming language, including SAS programming. I think programming
knowledge is a significant factor for getting a job in applied
statistics analysis positions.
