(1) I take it that it was the keyword "students" that led you to suppose
that the statement had anything to do with "the education field" (rather
than, say, the field of study the students were pursuing).

(2) The statement appears, however, not to have been made by any agency
of "the education field", but "on TV" -- by which one supposes you mean
broadcast television. That's not education: that's entertainment.
Or, possibly, "news", or the deliberate distortion thereof.

(3) A couple of colleagues have already pointed out how the statement
you so scornfully cite might in fact be true; although whether in fact
any such interpretation can be believed is impossible to tell, in the
absence of any context.

Could it be that it was more like "Ninety percent of the students in
District X were above the national median?"

in fact, this CAN be true ... depending on your frame of reference ...

Renseignements...

2001-05-31 Thread Jérôme Sine

Bonjour,

fit-ness

2001-05-31 Thread Alexis Gatt

Hi,

a basic question from a MSc student in England. First of all, yeah I read
the FAQ and I didnt find anything answering my question, which is fairly
simple: I am trying to analyse how well several mathematical methods perform
to modelize a scanner. So I have, for every input data, the corresponding
output given by the scanner and the values given by the mathematical models
I am using.
First, given the distribution of the errors, I can use the usual mean-StdDev
if the distro is normal, or median-95th percentile otherwise. Any other
known methods to enhance the pertinence of the analysis? Any ideas welcome.

Thanks in advance,
Alexis
