Mine worked right outa the box. I am using UbuntuStudio7.10.
You might try ekiga-config-tool with caution. Check the man page on it.

Good luck...ed

[Ekiga-list] usb handset: Uniden WIN1200?

2008-03-16 Thread sean darcy
I'm looking for a usb cordless handset to pair with ekiga. I'd like not
to be tied to the pc while I talk. I've looked at the bluetooth
headsets, but they seem overkill for just home phone extensions.

I've found a number of handsets that work with skype, but they seem
locked into skype.

I've also found the Uniden WIN1200, which works with MS Messenger. It
doesn't appear to be locked in like as the skype phones.

Anyone have any experience or suggestions?

[Ekiga-list] Dial-Up

2008-03-16 Thread Sven Zirkmann
I was wondering if Ekiga can work like Netwaiting for WIndows?
Whether or not it can take incoming calls from someone calling on
a regular phone? Or at least notify me that someone is calling, so
that I can disconnect from the internet and take the call (since I'm
on Dial-Up)?

2008-03-16 Thread Torsten Schlabach
Hi Sven!

It's possible to hook up a PSTN phone number with a VoIP account, then
connect to that VoIP account using Ekiga. When it comes to details:

1. I think this might be OT for this list; I can recommend a general
VoIP forum
2. For some hints, it would be helpful to know in which country that
PSTN phone number would be.

 > Netwaiting for WIndows?

What's that?

Just wondering? In what part of the world would anyone use analogue
dial-up to connect to the Internet?

Torsten

Re: [Ekiga-list] Dial-Up

2008-03-16 Thread Sven Zirkmann
Your in for a big surprise! /: P
One place where analogue dial-up is used is
in the United States of America! At least in
those out of the places where the telephone company
is waaay too bloody lazy to put down (at the least) DSL
cable.

I live in Hawai'i, in an out of the way place, with only Dial-Up
for internet. Wireless would be an option, if wasn't so expensive
to set up.

Netwaiting is a windows program for Dial-Up that notifies me about
incoming calls and allows me to take the call.

Btw, what does PSTN stand for? And what exactly is VoIP?
Sorry, I'm fairly new to all this.

Thanks to Edward and Tangy for spending so much time testing with me.

Obviously there's something wrong with my configuration.

Sometimes it looks like the sound card gets stuck and I have to re-boot
the computer :-(

Tanguy suggested me to try some other CODECS (the less costly ones)
but the sound is still chopped and often I dont hear the partner
speaking or sometimes in a very strange manner, like *very slow and in a
very low tone*

I will try again sometimes,

Ideas to fix this are welcome,

Thanks everybody, Jacques in Poitiers (France)

Most so-called 3rd world countries have at least GPRS coverage, often
EDGE. And often available to prepaid subscribers and at very affordable
rates.

Anyway, I think my setup is not quite right either.
I tried with another ekiga user (Thanks, Jean-michel ;) )
and it was not working properly; it started fine but
the sound was becoming more and more choppy.
I am just wondering, i just have a 512k broadband connection,
what codecs should i use if i want to have an acceptable
quality for the sound? (the video was quite good, by the way )

Thanks

Maybe what I should be asking is whether or not it's
possible for others to call me via landline while I'm on
the internet?

Ekiga now runs on another computer (slower but more « classic » HP
Vectra 700 VL) under Ubuntu 7.10.

The '500' echo test sounds better, there are no erratics sound card «jams»

I'will by standing by to morrow around 09:00 TU for new tests,
sound and chat only, no available camera at the moment.

Callers will be welcome :)

Using the configuration assistant I can use the camera Microphone as the
audio input. The next step is the video input, choices are pictures,
V4l, V4l2 or 1394avc, but none find the camera. I have the V4L2 loaded.
I tried the camera on an Edubuntu 7.10 amd64 it worked with the V4L2
module. Interesting.

Perhaps the video eats too much bandwidth. Is the quality better when
you disable video ?

Yes, it is possible. Many providers offer real phone numbers (including
the one "suggested" by Ekiga).
