There are lots of issues with being behind routers doing NAT. It is
not possible to tell from the information you gave which specific one
applies to your case -- US Robotics makes many different models and
any specific model could be configured in a myriad of ways. Ekiga
handles many of the issues pretty well by using STUN. You need to run
the Configuration Assistant[0] to see what information it can tell you
about what type of NAT you may be experiencing. See the wiki [1] for
more information on NAT specifically.

Good luck and ask on the list again if you still have trouble after
experimenting and reading a bit.

Very true. But they all charge roughly around the same and are very
cheap compared to POTS long-distance accounts. The other benefit of
diamoncard is that they actually give some money to help fund Ekiga
development. So, unless you can find some massive price advantage
it's nice to go with them.

Have you tried:
1. Making sure that Ekiga is trying to use the correct network interface:

3. You can get more information by running ekiga from the command line with

I have it set to use STUN with stun.ekiga.net - might that not suffice?
The NAT test thing said Port Restricted NAT.

That should be fine. The other possible culprit then is that you have a
previous instance of ekiga running which hasn't been killed properly. Looking
at your original email again I see that I missed this line:

When I quit ekiga, the window closes but it just hangs and doesn't
 terminate.

So, it's quite possible that you have a previous instance of ekiga hanging
around. You can check for sure with

netstat -p -l | grep ekiga

and follow it up with a killall ekiga or just kill the PID mentioned in the
PID/ekiga column output from the above.

Hope that helps, I'm out of easy ideas after that.

[Ekiga-list] Way to pause before dialing an extension?

2007-09-09 Thread Oisin Feeley
Hi all,

Is there a way to make ekiga pause before dialing an extension? I'm
trying to dial a number of the format 1-234-567-8901 ext. 2345

I want to use the Local address book and hopefully not use Asterisk
(wonderful though it is).

I can dial 1-234-567-8901 and then when I hear the ring at the PBX I
can type 2345 on the Ekiga keypad and the call goes through.

If I store the number in the local address book as 123456789012345
then I just get a busy signal.

Any hints?

Can anyone give me a clue

 Install the libpt package first.

  http://wiki.ekiga.org/index.php/Linux_Users#Install_packages

There is no libpt package in the FC5 download. there is
pwlib-1.10.5-0.fc5.i86.rpm. When I attempt to install that package is
when I get the dependency message.

You need EITHER libpt or pwlib as the link provided above suggests.
You don't need both. Fedora Core 5 uses pwlib.

You should not be having any dependency problems if you use yum which
is a package installer and dependency solver, e.g.
yum install ekiga

How, _specifically_ are you trying to install ekiga?

You should have no problems with Ekiga on FC5 (I have one system with
it currently installed and functioning nicely). You will need to make
sure that you have the updates repository enabled for yum. The most
up-to-date version it contains is 2.0.1-5.

ekiga-2.0.1-5

[Ekiga-list] Linux Journal article on Ekiga and Wengo

2007-02-15 Thread Oisin Feeley
Hi all,

This month's Linux Journal (March 2007, Issue 155 pp 22-26)
concentrates on VOIP Telephony (a lot of good Asterisk articles) and
contains a column from regular contributor Marcel Gagné which covers
Ekiga and WengoPhone. He gives a good review to them both, but seems
to lean towards WengoPhone (for the stated reason of great sound
quality, SMS support and IM integration). The article mentions Gizmo
towards the end but doesn't review it.

Personally I've had much better luck with Ekiga than with Wengo or
Gizmo in terms of getting them set up easily. I also wonder what
codecs Marcel was using (on both machines) to test sound-quality. I
think the review sold Ekiga a little short as although it's positive,
its praise is muted and the impression left is that the sound quality
isn't that good, that it has less features and that there's no easy
way of buying credits to do pc-to-pstn calls.

Anyway, just thought I'd mention it on the list so that you're aware
of coverage.

Without other information I'd suggest trying the following:

0) Make sure that your end is working by using the echo test
sip:[EMAIL PROTECTED]. If it's not then follow 1 to 6 below. If it is
then get the remote user to do the same thing.

1) check that your microphone is switched on

2) Make sure that the microphone is selected as the input device
 Edit-Preferences-Devices-AudioDevices-InputDevice- whatever
your mic is
(For me the appropriate device in Input Device is USB Logitech)

3) Make sure that your headset is selected as the output device
Edit-Preferences-Devices-AudioDevices-InputDevice- whatever
your headset is
(For me the appropriate device in Output Device is USB Logitech)

4) Make sure the correct mixer device is selected

5) Make sure that your mixer-application has volume turned up
correctly for whatever is your output device. I use the gnome volume
applet 2.14.3 as a mixer application

6) Goto 0)

[Ekiga-list] Being called by Windows Messenger to Ekiga

2007-01-05 Thread Oisin Feeley
Hi all,

I've been trying to get a windows user set up with a VOIP client so
that we can communicate. So far our testing of combinations is
partial and incomplete, but we've done

* Skype (Win) - Skype(Linux) -- I don't like it because of Skype's
non-Free nature, but it works
* Gizmo (Win) - Gizmo(Linux) -- this fails partially on the Linux
side because of some interaction with ALSA, also although they're
using an open protocol the client is non-Free
* Gizmo(Win) - Ekiga (Linux) -- seems to fail in both directions,
but need to test more
* Win Messenger 5.1 - Ekiga (Linux) -- he claims that he is told
that I need a .NET Passport

Has anyone tried the last option and if so, is there any validity to
his statement that he is prompted for my .NET Passport?

I found the following posts in the archives which I've passed on to him:
http://threebit.net/mail-archive/gnomemeeting-list/msg00108.html
http://www.mail-archive.com/ekiga-devel-list@gnome.org/msg00327.html

So, has anyone got this working?

Also, is it worth suggesting that he install Ekiga-win32 (note it
would be a difficult task for him, he's remote to me and I find it
hard to help) ? What does ekiga-win32 need to get to a usable state
if it's not already there?

Merci a tous les ekiga developers et Bonne Année,
Oisín

2007-01-05 Thread Oisin Feeley
Hi guys,
thanks for the response, but right now after following Yannick's
instructions we're having the following failure:

From Win Messenger5.1 (with user registered on ekiga.net) I am shown
in contacts as offline even though I'm logged on.

If I call from Ekiga to WM5.1 then a connection is established but no
sound can be heard be either party even though we've done succesful
echo tests.

If I send a chat then the WM5.1 then there's a failure and ditto the
other way round.
