[Elecraft] K2 RFC15 question

2004-07-21 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

Anyone familiar with the mod for VFO stability around 7.182 MHz? It involved a
tiny 100uH choke and a 68pF capacitor. Well, I broke the choke and
replaced it with a toroid I had laying around that was 10uH. I'm
wondering if I should get the original choke or just leave things the
way I have them.

(Builder's paranoia.) :)

[Elecraft] sensitivity/noise question

2004-07-21 Thread Hisashi T Fujinaka

Compared to my IC-706MKII, the Elecraft seems to be stingier on the
S-meter and seems to hear a lot less noise. And yes, I used an antenna
switch and did A/B comparisons.

I shouldn't complain, since the Elecraft is great to listen to,
especially on 40M, but should I break out the test equipment and try to
peak things up again?

And now that I type this, I wonder if my cabling is OK.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 voltage measurements?

2004-07-21 Thread Don Wilhelm
Tom,

I have not yet seen a reply on the reflector to your questions, so I will
try to give you some information.

The voltage at U5 pin 1 will depend on the reflected voltage sensed by D17
and the setting of R27 - if you are measuring the voltage under transmit
conditions, do you have a good dummy load connected? Pickup on an antenna
wire connected to the output MIGHT do strange things during receive periods
too. You should have the same voltage on U5 pin 1 and pin 3 because U5A is
a unity gain op amp. If the voltage on pin 1 is much different than the
voltage on pin 3 the problem will be found after the op amp U5A, but if they
are the same, the problem is in the SWR bridge or its adjustments.

I am at a loss to explain 28 volts on U6 pin 6 - that is another op amp and
it is powered from a 5 volt supply, so the pin 6 voltage will never be
brought higher than 5 volts by anything in U6 itself. A regular RS232
computer cable plugged into the KPA100 and connected to a computer might
cause that kind of voltage - DO NOT USE A REGULAR COMPUTER SERIAL CABLE -
BAD THINGS WILL HAPPEN. Check for something tied into the VRFDET line
somewhere in the base K2 or on the KPA100 board's AUX IO umbilical cord
and/or the DB-9 connector. Follow the PC board traces from U6 pin 6 to the
connection with the cable and the DB-9 connector for a short to an adjacent
trace or solder pad.

That is all I can tell you with the info I have right now.

Don W3FPR

I don't believe in "off-list" replies except for buying/selling stuff. I have
done a fair
amount of work on this, and can give you some very simple methods using the
MFJ-259B or the AEA CIA-HF. So here goes.

The equivalent circuit of a choke formed by passing a wire through a bead is
simply a series R and L (or R and X L). Both R and L vary widely with
frequency.
That is, there is not a single L value, nor is there a single X value that
describes
the choke at all frequencies. Rather, there is a set of curves that describes
both R
and X. In general, R and X both start off small at low frequencies, both
increase
with increasing frequency, and at some frequency X (or L) will drop off to a
pretty
small value leaving only R.

To measure these curves for any ferrite, simply take a short piece of wire,
pass it
through the ferrite, and connect the wire to the analyzer. Then read the
impedance
over a range of frequencies, put the values of R and X in a spreadsheet, and
compare them to the datasheet for the material. There are excellent data for
Fair-
Rite beads in the Fair-Rite pdf catalog on their website. I strongly recommend
this catalog -- in addition to the data, there are some excellent applications
notes
that talk about how ferrites work and how to use them.

You can also wind multi-turn coils through many ferrites (depending on their
size
and shape). This will increase the impedance (both R and X) at any frequency,
but will also shift the peak in both R and X to a much lower frequency that is
sort
of proportional to the square of the number of turns. For example, the #43 mix
peaks somewhere around 100 MHz for a single turn, but 8-10 turns will pull the
peak down around 80 meters, and 14 turns or so will get it down in the AM
broadcast band (you can easily do this with the 2.4" OD toroids commonly used
for baluns.

The limit of measurement for the MFJ-259B is 650 ohms, and for the CIA-HF is
1K ohms. Many multi-turn chokes will result in impedances well above this.

[Elecraft] OT - Testing Ferrite Beads using common tools

2004-07-21 Thread Tom Hammond

Hi folks:

This a pretty off topic, but I hope someone might be able to shed some
light upon this question.

A couple years ago, at the Dayton HamVention, in a fit of greed, I
purchased a number of ferrite beads which, although they were NOT the FB-
73-2401 beads I usually buy, they WERE "advertised" (by the seller) as
being mix 73. These beads have a somewhat larger inside diameter, making it
easier to slip them over slightly larger diameter coax (e.g. RG-8X, etc.).
And the price was REALLY GOOD (hence the previous reference to 'greed').

I am now at the point of wanting to use these beads, but I'd like to
confirm that they might work at HF. I don't have a lot of sophisticated
test equipment, BUT I do have a sign gen, 100 MHz scope, an MFJ-259B
Antenna SWR Analyzer, and the more commonly available 'shack-type'
tools at my discretion.

Does anyone happen to know of a way to do some cursory testing on these
beads (possibly using the MFJ-259) to tell if they might offer a decent
impedance at HF? And if, how?

Since some of our OT threads seem to linger MUCH longer than they should,
please reply to me OFF-REFLECTOR and if I can confirm that a particular
procedure works as advertised, and it repeatable, I'll summarize it (giving
full credit to whomever offered it), and post it back to the reflector.

Tom N0SS

[Elecraft] San Jose, CA - I need to borrow

2004-07-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Elecrafters,
Attention San Jose, CA & south bay area...
I am traveling to South Korea at the end of August to deliver a K2/100 to my
friend Evan, W5IQS/HL2, and attend the DX Convention there in early Sept. Evan
and I will demo his K2/100 at the convention to the eager HL_Land DXers. We
would also like to demo a K1 and a KX1, but don't have either of those rigs.
Nor does Elecraft have loaners I could take along. So I am appealing to the
readers of this list.

I know this is a bold proposition, but are there some kind-hearted hams out
there in the SJ, CA area who would be willing to loan me a K1 and a KX1 to take
along on this trip? I am returning mid-Sept.

Please contact me via email and off the reflector.

Thank you for the consideration.

Well, I have to agree with a lot of the sentiment expressed here - I have a
K2, and would like another one. Certainly can't afford the price of an
IC-7800 - E or otherwise!! ;)

However I did have a chance to see 4 of them in play at our Field Day site
and operated one myself for a bit. My net impression is an agreement with
the stuff between the [snip]s.

We were 4A with a GOTA station - perhaps 80 feet between each of the three
towers and a little more than that to the GOTO Windom. The only problem
experienced was some RF interference with the headsets. Pull the plug of
the headset and the interference was not heard in the speaker. This is
running CW/SSB on the same bands with no auxiliary filtering. It was a
radio that was very easy on the ears and very easy to use radio.

Would I buy one if I had that kind of discretionary cash - oh, probably!
But I would still keep my K2 QRP and add a KP2/100 as well. But I don't so
I will just save some money for a K2/100.

Cheers,
-rick, K7LOG
