[Elecraft] K2 (#4498) and KSB2 performance
The KSB2 option was installed last saturday and tested during all this time. It was working OK by the book (!) and the only objection was the gain that was too just, very limit, the max output in SSB (upper or mower SB) was only 6 to 8 watts pep (as seen on the scope inh two tone test). I found on the web the paper from John KI6WX (July 18, 2002)relative to diverses modifications and improving the KSB2 performances. I did not do the filter bandwith modif (as I was very happy with what I got !)but I did the increased gain and reduced intermod modif. it was finished this morning and the results are as John said in his paper. Around 5/6 db increased output and also as a bonus an intermod distortion lower than I got before !I still did not make the ALC time constant change. I will may be do that when I used the K2 for PSK transmit. Thank to John, wayne Eric and the gang for their help ! 73 F5UL/Robert ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] OT: Repairing Astron RS-20
Harold, A couple of suggestions in repairing your Astron. You MUST discharge the large filter capacitor before removing or replacing the LM723 regulator IC (this is the part you will likely have to replace). The RS-20 uses 2N3055 pass transistors, but you can also use 2N3771 (which is what Astron has been using on newer units). Test the pass transistors, IF you are replacing the LM723 (testing with a VOM is covered in the KBT web site - below) Excellent reference web site for understanding, troubleshooting and repairing linear power supplies http://www.kbt-dc-supplies.com/index.php Dave Metz, WA0AUQ's article What Inside Your Astron? http://www.seits.org/features/pwrsup.htm This is a very easy repair, and it one of the Amateur technical basics (audio, power, antennas) that I teach new amateurs. Re: [Elecraft] Anyone using a K2 for RX and another TX?
yes yes yes... Hi Mike, at this VERY moment I am using my k2/100 with my icom 756pro trying to get the VU4.. ( rare dx)... the K2 noise blanker helps me more decipher the esp weak signals from the VU4 on 20 meters. I have not established a very decent way to mute the k2 when transmittingother than use the K2 second receive antenna input ( on the k160rx) and transmit into a dummy load at the same time as I let loose the KW on the 756into a different antenna. The other missing element is that I cannot receive on my better antenna as it is 150 feet closer to the offending power line poles So I am transmitting with the big beam and listening on my old classic 33 with the K2. I have fitted my 756 pro with a tap just after the t/r relays, so I an share the antenna selected, however as I mentioned I can't even use that function, since that antenna is different for each rig !!! now just waiting for propagation to open up in the midwest RF BLACK HOLE. I briefly tried to use the test mode to disengage the TX , but that seems to function in cw only. Better ideas are welcomed bill At 06:58 PM 12/13/2004, you wrote: Hi, I was wondering if anyone is using the K2 just for the receiver and using some other transmitter with it in a transceive mode. Most of us probably (had or ) still have one of the big 4 name transceivers and I was thinking about using the K2 in conjunction with another radio to take advantage of the 100W power or AM mode. Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks in advance. Mike, WA1SEO ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Anyone using a K2 for RX and another TX?
Just for fun I whipped up a little logic circuit which placed appropriately in the K2 and with an added DOW-KEY relay and a foot switch would allow the use of the K2 as a reciever with a free standing transmitter. This is untested and just a mental exercise but it is how I would attempt to resolve the problem. I believe you can do it without breaking a single trace. It ain't QSK but it is just one switch. e-mail me if you want the proposed circuit. WARNING: If you play around with the MCU |MUTE circuitry, it is very ESD sensitive and I am not the only one who has discoverd that. The only solution if you blow it is a new MCU if you want the audio mute. 73, Jim, W4ATK K2 #4028 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K6DGW/MM - advice and guidance
We're booked on a cruise thru the Canal next spring on Princess. Our room has a balcony which I understand is more like a shelf. I purchased and built a KX1 to take with. Being a real conservative I guess, I began getting ready for international operation as outlined on the ARRL Web Site (I tend to follow the rules). I decided I'd get an Americas Permit to operate from HP, and confine all other operation to international waters. To do this (and be legal), I needed permission from the Captain and a permit from the country of the ship's registry. So, I wrote to Princess and described my plan, the specifications of the radio, and the permission and info I needed. They called back fairly quickly and said they do not allow radio transmitting aboard ship as it coule interfere with the ship's operation. I'm currently considering various avenues of appeal, including taking the KX1 and asking the real Captain when we're aboard since I'm almost certain the answer I got is a corporate policy and the Captain was never asked. I'd be interested in hearing (off-reflector is probably best, this is a very busy place) experiences (particularly with Princess -- the ship is the Sun Princess) in making this work. Disappointing as it is, all is not lost. I've acquired a new interest in QRP, am gearing up for a run at the top 5 in the Skinny Class in the Spartan Sprint (I'll have to learn to send CW with the buttons so I can jettison the paddle), and between the KX1 and K2, I've begun to operate from our deck when the temp is high enough and the sun is out. If I think I can get away with it with the MP-1 sticking up over my head and a wire trailing behind me in front of my neighbors, I may try some K6DGW/PP. We do live rurally, and I might manage it down by the tracks. 73 and Happy Holidays, Fred K6DGW Auburn CA CM98lw ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
