Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 S/n 01432...LIVES.!!

2005-04-22 Thread Kevin Rock
That is the main reason I do not use the S meter to give someone a signal
report. I leave the AF gain cranked up and use the RF gain to adjust
volume. It gives me a better chance at digging folks out of the noise
level. Thus the S meter on my rig just gives me a fun light to watch
while I am on the air. I should really turn it off but it is much like
watching the needles bounce in my antenna tuner. Keeps me company in the
shack :)

RE: [Elecraft] Elecraft K2 S/n 01432...LIVES.!!

2005-04-22 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Paul, Andy and all,

It is not unusual for the S-meter calibrations to change from those initial
settings that were made when you had only the Contol board and the Front
Panel boards complete. Now that you have a full receiver, you should re-do
the CAL S LO and CAL S-Hi calibration to straighten out the S-meter.

The manual does not specifically state it, but those initial settings are at
a point where you are becoming accustomed to working with the menu
parameters, and may not be the final settings required. Since this question
crops up from time to time, it would be a good addition to the manual to put
in a step indicating that re-calibration of th S-meter may need to be done
after the full receiver is built and all filters aligned.

Yes, the S-meter will climb when the RF Gain is lowered - that is normal
behavior.

73,
Don W3FPR

Andy, your writing style is very interesting and fun to read and your
energy level is inspiring! (and your . key on your keyboard must be
tired!)

I also have that same S meter issue on my #4818 which is in the middle

And as I turn down the RF gain, the S meter climbs and climbs until it

not.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K2 S/n 01432...LIVES.!!

2005-04-22 Thread Andy GM0NWI

Yes' Sir'ee!

You read that correctly...! As of today 23rd April 2005... "... Elecraft
K2 S/n 01432.." LIVES..!!

Bhoy's... ! You CANT...even begin to know how I feel today...! This, for
me, has been only the 3rd most happiest times in my entire life..! The
1st...passing my driving test in 1983, ...first time aroundwith a "hand
controlled" car The 2nd Passing my "Ham Ticket"...after 18
months 12 HOURS A DAY...constant studying of the "Manual"...and all
other literature involved.. .

and the 3rd... " The Birth Of My Elecraft K2 S/n 01432..."...!

Oh..! Yes...! . as the man himself Mr Elvis Aron Presley ...sang
about many, many a time in my room at home... "I Got My Mojo Working..."
 And BOY IT FEELS GOOD..!!
Now I KNOW...what all the talk has been about on the reflector, HF Bands,
magazinesetc for the last 5 years of my life...

What a truly "Monumentous" occassion happened here today...! Some of you
guy's will remember earlier in the week, where I posted to the reflector...
that there had indeed been a "hiccup" in the construction of my "Baby"...
... with the "Alignment & Test Past II" section of the manual, and I was
admittedly strugglin' with the "way of the manual", shall we say, ..not
knowing wether I was actually doing the correct proceedure for alignment on
the 40M Band...(in and around Page 50)...

Well... Once Again... my dear friend, "mentor"...and...close friend John
Ross GM1BSG...has again (...keep readin' John..!) "Saved The Day"... From
the outset of the beginning of the construction of "K2 S/n 01432"
(...yeah..I know..its layen in a cupboard t... long..!)... John has been
an absolutley monumentally oustanding "rock" for me throughout all of
this... the man is a pure genius...a fantastic friend, shoulder to cry
on the whole shootin' match... When others all around me, constantly
said, "..you'll never do that Andy...your not good enough..." John...
helped me "rise above it all"...with his kind words, determination, and
sheer bloody-mindedness,... telling me that he "Knew...! that I could do
it.." ...I thought he was lying or just sayin that to help me along,...but
today, it all fell into place..and now I beleive him...Without HIM...I CAN
say, that I would still be "scratching my head" on this one, with the only
thing to do "backtrack" through the manual...which we did to a certain
extent, but nothing like I would have needed to do on my own if he were'nt
here..

Today, we connected up some "Serious" test equipment, I'll leave John to
explain the finer points of that and quickly found the "problem"...

What Was I Hear Y'all Say...?? In a word

ME...

Dumb-%^&*...! here had "forgotten" in my wisdom, to include a couple of
very important componants during the last few pages before puttin her
together for the "Big Smoke Test"...! R39 and another componant...on the
back left-hand-side of the "RF Board"...which of course, allowed me to
"tune" the various filters, even for 40m...but was stopping the rig from
receiving ...ANYTHING !! on 40m...
a quick read of the schematic (by John..!) and a scan of the board, brought
this to our attentionWhere I "..hastily made a quick retreat to the
kitchen...! " ...and I'm NOT joking...!! How "small" once again did I feel
for the 2nd time this week.?? Another "small" problem that I seemed to have
had, was with some "switching" of the 40m filter, this turned out to be
Toroid "T5" or "T6" which I had "orientated" in the wrong direction..!
making it act, kinda like a "choke" or "attenuator" (or so john
explained..!) this was b.a.d. ... as you can imagine, attenuating, so to
speak the signals on 40m...

Must have been one of those moments of madness, ...where I had visited other
rooms in the house for a moment and forgotten on returning where I was
at...or perhaps what I was "partaking in" at the time...

I've learned my lesson for sure...

But it did "raise a few eyebrows. and ...temperatures..! " I can tell
you, when John found out what had happened infact,..he has made sure
that I NEVER apply for a job at his satellite business, where they undertake
the fabrication of satalite receivers, LMB's etc etc...EVER..!! (...aye
John..?)

A quick change around of the toroid, a solder of the 2 componants that I had
ommited to install... BANG..! There they weresignals 5-5, 5-7, 5-9
...all on 40m CW..!!

Fanfare Plays In The Background...! Oh..! Joyess Moment...! ...and nearly
tears of happiness all around

SO..! Glad to say that K2 S/n 01432 is now receiving stations on 40m
CW...Boy Its Good..!.. Still got a couple of problems to sort out,... Like
WHY..the S-Meter is still sitting at S3 of constant... when there is nothing
to be heard on the band...or any stations on a particular frequency
Suppose I'll come across why later in the manual... perhaps a "tweak" still
to be d

especially as regards the band modules...

Also... missed out on the run of the "Cascade" kitnew moto "...Buy n

...and if I could possibly replicate it at a future date with some stuff

[Elecraft] IF Filter Response relatively flat

2005-04-22 Thread Karsten Eppert(DK4AS)
I am not shure, if my CW-.filter(s) work(s) correctly because I find
it/them rather broad regarding the shape factor. If the peak-width is
set to approx. 150 Hz (0,20) the -6 db-width is around 200 Hz, but the -
60 db-width is still about 1,6 khz. I don´t have precise measurement
tools, so don´t take the stated values as absolute values, but I can´t
be too far off. I wonder if I have built in a mistake and - if yes -
with what method I can trace ist.
Has anybody checked the shapefactor of the CW-filter-chain at different

Hi all,

Some days ago I posted a message regarding the charging of NiMh battery's. I
got only one reaction, so I guess many are wondering what is a good way! I
decided to go for the experimental way and did the following:
- Measure the supply voltage, we call that U1;
- Measure the battery voltage in charged situation, we call that U2;
- Take U1-U2 and devide that over the charging current you want to use. In
case of my 2400 mA/h cells I decided for a "conservative" 200 mA;
- The result is the resistor value, in my case about 33 Ohm;
- Take the square of U1-U2 and devide over R and you have the power, in my
case between one and 2W.
I had a 33 Ohm resistor of 5W in stock which was only 0,3 inch, so it fits
very nicely. I have mounted it on the component side of the pcb, otherwise
it gets in the way of the battery!

The result is very positive, it charges nicely. I have mounted a timer in
line with the charging supply, an old Nokia 12V GSM supply, to avoid
overcharging as I read that NiMh cells dont like that.

Have fun! Oh and by the way; modifying is at your own risk and will probably
violate the warranty. Or perhaps Wayne and Eric find it such a good idea
that they will allow it ;)

[Elecraft] WTB: MP-1 Antenna and portable case

2005-04-22 Thread Mark Baugh
I am looking for a good used MP-1 Super Antenna for a
reasonable price. I am putting together a
rapid-deployment station for disaster relief
situations. I also need a carrying case that measures
about 18"x12"x6", or something close to that. Can
anybody help?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 & hamlib

2005-04-22 Thread Leigh L. Klotz, Jr.

Mike,
Filter settings don't work, but Brian Mury has taken on the maintenance
of the K2 module (see the hamlib list) and hopes to fix it.
Try gMFSK 0.7.1pre1 which includes Olivia from Pawel and also a
bandpass-center button (which I wrote and Tomi Manninen incorporated,
once he made it work, hi hi).

Leigh.

Does it work well or are the hamlib-supported features limited? When I
use (non-CW) digital modes I enjoy the hamlib/gmfsk/xlog trio and would
love to find that the K2 is already fully supported, though I'm
definitely willing to contribute software to hamlib if it's not.

[Elecraft] Re:Delta Switch & Hexbeam

2005-04-22 Thread Bob Follett
Steve, Stuart, and Gang:

I have a Hexbeam, fed with RG213 into a Delta switch at three locations so
far...

Stuart is on the right track, RF on the coax, but looking at the wrong Internet
source. The Hexbeam group at Yahoo covers it all, and the 'current choke'
issue has been such a common thread, that the solution is mentioned in the Home
Page of the group. Quote:

" 6 Amidon FB-77-1024 beads side over RG-213 and can be held in place with heat
shrink"

Not mentioned on the home page, is to make sure the coax from the top of the
Hexbeam is routed down the 'cold' side of the center support (in the manual),
and the beads are located just below the antenna mounting plate.

That said, my Hexbeam is totally un-fussy, through the switch, No tuner --
straight into an Ameritron 80B amp (sometimes on--sometimes off :-) Now about
that Elecraft amp

[Elecraft] K2 & hamlib

2005-04-22 Thread Terry

Hello,

You might like the combo of Marote and Xlog. It won't need hamlib,
although I have used hamlib with K2 and all is fine. I've been using
Marote for some time now and it does everything I need.

I do not (yet) own a K2, but I'm a rather happy camper as far as hamlib
and friends are concerned.

My recollections of the mailing-list are that it should work fine, but
you're welcome to ask the same question in the other list as well.

I suppose your contributions would be welcome anyway ;-)

[Elecraft] KRC-2 6 TRN band Info needed

2005-04-22 Thread Dave Olean
Hi Elecrafters,
I have been using a KRC-2 for about one year, to control microwave
transverters and provide seamless interfacing between the K2 and the
microwave bands of 903 and up.
My question is: When will the KRC-2 be updated to accomodate the six
TRN bands that are in the version 2.04 firmware release? I would like
to have some way to control more than the three bands available now. I
use Writelog to set the operating frequency and change bands. If a
station wants to work me on a different band, say 2304.110, I type
2304110 and BINGO I am there. I hit the K2 key paddle or push the mike
button. It is very simple and saves much time and confusion.
I guess what I need is the software utility that can reconfigure the
KRC-2. I keep checking the website and nothing ever appears about it.
The summer microwave season is upon us, and I am trying to get
everything set up. I really need four TRN bands set up on one K2, and
three bands on another. Last year I used three K2s, but reducing that
number to two would free up valuable desk space and allow more room for
empty beer bottles and pizza boxes.

RE: [Elecraft] KPA-100 Question

2005-04-22 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Brent,

As long as it is 'sort of' vertical and its feet are securely soldered to
the pads, there will be no problem. It is difficult to get it exactly
vertical in most cases. I would think that it should not be leaning over so
far as to contact the resistors.

[Elecraft] KPA-100 Question

2005-04-22 Thread Brent Sutphin WB4X
I am in the process of building my KPA-100. On page 36 of the manual I am
installing C83. The instruction says "Place C83 in exactly the position
shown..." Now the problem, I don't have the room to get C83 in the vertical
position. While winding T2, one of the turns crossed over the other, and
the windings may be slightly longer because of this. I have C83 mounted but
it is not vertical as shown. It is mounted at a slight angle.

Question; Do I need to rewind T2 or will I be OK?

Re: [Elecraft] new product

2005-04-22 Thread Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy
Great ideas. A display showing which of the International Beacon Project
stations is transmitting at the time would also be very useful. Also it
would be nice for us in Europe to be able to use other LF/VLF Time/Frequency
stations to drive the clock other than WWV, for example the German station
DCF77 on 77.5 kHz (50kW) which is very strong here (eastern Scotland).
