Re: [Elecraft] Linear operation with K2?

2005-08-02 Thread Don and Diana Cunningham

Hank,
I fail to see why he would have to worry about the Ameritron amps, since
they (Al-1200, AL-1500, AL-80B at least) only have 12 VDC on the relay jack,
and require sinking 100ma max. The specs listed for the K2 say 1A and 200V.
Am I missing something??

Thanks,
Don, WB5HAK

Strange! Before the KX1 came out, the K1 was generally acknowledged as
the best multi-band backpacking rig available. It is no less suitable for
 that
 task today.

There's nothing strange about a product evolving to improve in some ways while
the old one remains suitable to task. Those two facts can co-exist quite
happily. Understanding your needs and the tradeoffs between the rigs is the
key.

When you go out and spend $200.00 on a 1 person tent that is 1lb lighter
than your previous tent, and another $180 on a sleeping bag that is
1/2lb lighter, and continue to do so so your pack drops from 35lbs to
30lbs the KX1 is now a much better backpacking rig. Not only is the
radio a little more than 1/2lb lighter, the batteries to power it for
the same timeframe are lighter as well. Now, if your saying the KX1 will
not work, then it's just dead weight when packed and that would be a
different story.

If one is happy with the limited number of bands covered by the KX1, and
recognizes that there is absolutely **no** physical way that KX1 receiver RF
performance can match that of a properly constructed K1 in any area other
than VFO stability, and that the ATU in the KX1 can't come close to the
matching range of the K1's KAT1, then the KX1 is a great choice. On the
other hand, if RF performance *on the ham CW bands* is important, the K1
stands as the best of the two.

When I'm out in the boonies, I want the best possible RF performance on the
ham CW bands that I can get in a small package. The K1 hasn't been shaken
from that position.

I don't care that I can't use it for shortwave broadcasts or to copy the ham
phone bands. I've got a Sony portable that'll do that quite adequately,
with essential AM/FM coverage to boot.

So whether the KX1 wins handsdown depends on the criteria applied. It
doesn't win for me, handsdown or otherwise.

For real backpacking it seems worth the comprimise.

[Elecraft] K1 or KX1? Backpacking Analysis

2005-08-02 Thread mvamis

... the KX1 wins handsdown for backpacking...

Strange! Before the KX1 came out, the K1 was generally
acknowledged as the best multi-band backpacking rig
available. It is no less suitable for that task today.

I think you misunderstand. Let me look at your comments
one at a time.

If one is happy with the limited number of bands
   covered by the KX1

The KX1 covers 20, 30 and 40 meters. When one is talking
about backpacking, they are spending a majority of their
time hiking. Generally, and this will vary by person, a
backpacker will hike during the day and set up camp during
the late afternoon or early evening. I don't think that
having the full spectrum of bands is going to add
significantly to the hikers (aka ham's) enjoyment of his
evening's operating, While it would certainly be nice to
have a rig that was equipped with 10 through 80, I would
suppose that only 1 or 2 bands would actually be used
before it's time to hit the sack.

and recognizes that there is absolutely **no**
physical
way that KX1 receiver RF performance can match that of
a

properly constructed K1 in any area other than VFO
   stability,

There are others here on this list that would say the
difference is very minimal. Since I don't own a K1, I
can't comment.

and that the ATU in the KX1 can't come close to the
matching range of the K1's KAT1

Again, remember that the hiker is backpacking, and as such
is carrying a small radio and minimal antenna. If I were
to hike today, I would take the KX1 with 25' of antenna
wire and 16' of counterpoise wire. Since the wire used
would be very small, it would be light and compact. The
KX1 easily matches that wire, once strung in a tree, to a
perfect 1:1 on all 3 of its bands, which is all that is
needed. While it IS true the K1's ATU may be better at
matching systems under more difficult situations, that
capability is not needed when out doors with a 25' of
wire.

On the other hand, if RF performance *on the ham CW
bands* is important, the K1 stands as the best of the
   two.

I'm not sure how you justify that statement, but oh well.

I don't care that I can't use it for shortwave
broadcasts or to copy the ham phone bands. I've got a
Sony portable that'll do that quite adequately, with
   essential AM/FM coverage to boot.

Are you needing to carry that too? That is an additional
weight and more hardware to pack that is not required with
the KX1.

Specs that are important to me:

The KX1 is 1.4 x 5.8 x 3.0 and weighs 9 oz (excluding
options)
It has a current drain of 32 mA on receive and 300-700 mA
on transmit.

The K1 is 2.4 x 5.2 x 7.1 and weighs 1.4 lbs (excluding
options)
It has a current drain of 55 mA on receive and 700-900 mA
on transmit.

The KX1 runs on 6 AA batteries, and will output 1.5 to
2.0 watts.
The K1 runs on 8 AA batteries (with optional KBT1
installed) and will output 5 watts.

The KX1 comes with a small keyer that attaches directly to
the side of the KX1.

The K1 requires a separate keyer.

Don't get me wrong. I am not trying to tell you that the
K1 is in anyway a lesser radio than the KX1. In fact, I
own a KX1 and I am seriously considering purchasing a K1.
There ARE some situations where the K1 just would be a
better fit than the KX1.

What I am talking about here is the practicality taking a
ham radio hiking into the mountains. If I could carry it
and the necessary hardware, I would love to hike into the
woods with a K2 and a nice Buddipole. But being practical,
I see the sense in having the KX1 as my radio of choice
for backpacking, and thus the original statement...

the KX1 wins handsdown for backpacking...

[Elecraft] K2, resistance check Q7

2005-08-02 Thread Erik Linder

Hi gang,

My reading for Q7 base is too low, but not shorted.
I get 760 ohm...
But I should get 2.5 to 3 k ohm.

I have worked my way through the schematics.
At R62 I get zero one one side and 870 on the other.
At R60 I get 870 and 760.
The low resistance must be somwhere between R60 and Q7 base.

I have removed all passive components that connects to ground: C137,
C129, C130, C138.

No change.

I don't think any of the T's are shorted, cos I dont see zero ohms.

Please give me some hints if you can, on how I can proceed.

I can only say that 80 percent of my contacts are on 20 or 40. So the number

hikers too??

[Elecraft] KX-1 TX power and rcvr questions

2005-08-02 Thread Coote, Jay
Hello List:
While building my KX-1 and installing the 30M board, I found the
following:

Receiver S/N is poorer on 30M. I'd say .4 uV for a discernable signal
while 40 and 20M only require about .25uV for a discernable signal.
Also, without any antenna or service monitor connected, noise on 30M is
noticeably louder than on 40 or 20M.

On transmit, and with the R11 and R30 power mods added (and R30 cranked
down a little to keep power under 4 Watts) power on 40 and 30M
Is 4 watts, while on 20M it is only 2.7 watts. This is not in spec.
At 9.0V, 40M and 30M are 1.4 watts; 20M is 0.82 watts- also not in spec.
The low 20M RF power problem existed before installing the 30M unit.

I'd appreciate comments from anyone who has had these problems in their
KX-1.

Footnotes:
IRF-1200S service monitor
Non-reactve load and numeric VPP display o-scope
I have checked T1, L1, L2, relays, DDS components, etc
I'm working with Elecraft on this.

Along similar lines we have Summits on the Air (SOTA) over here with

[Elecraft] Heat related issue

2005-08-02 Thread Steve L.
WB7FJG and N4SL activated their club call, W7MRG for
the Bumblebee event as BB #46.

We hiked to a local bird sanctuary in Snohomish, WA
and shot up an 88' CF doublet sloper with the two ends
at 80' and 60'. Only worked 20m as the other bands
were dead up here.

We used a K2 and 5A-hr battery with the internal
autotuner which, as always, worked freakin' GREAT!

However, it was *hot* outside and the sun was hitting
the K2's case until you could NOT place your hand on
it - very hot!
After an hour or so, everytime I sent anything using
the built-in memory keyer, there was a loud CLICK in
the headset/speaker about 250mS after the last
character was sent. This didn't occur when using the
internal keyer and a paddle, it did occur even when in
TEST mode, transmitting no power output. T-R was set
to 0.01. Also, when tuning, as the frequency was
changed from 140xx.30 to 140xx.31 (in either
direction) there was a loud click. Right on 14.060
there was very loud key-down signal with some
warbling.

When I got home, the radio once again worked perfectly
as it always has before, so I'm certain this was an
excessive heat issue (I've always used a tent or shade
before).

So, anyone else ever have this, is there some known
thing I can change to 'fix' this 'problem'? It's
SN4272 with all mods I know about in place (it's the
K2/100 when in the main shack, the QRP with the ATU
when a field unit). Just curious.

72, Steve N4SL

Yeah Steve, there is a fix, it is called shading the Radio!

You probably exceeded the temperature limits of inside components.

I had a tuner that kept getting out of adjustment at Field Day one year.
Finally, I realized that the sun angle had changed to bear directly on the
dark case and the inductor was heating up and changing value.
Put some shade over the rig by moving it on table and everything went back
to normal.

I fail to see why he would have to worry about the Ameritron amps,
since they (Al-1200, AL-1500, AL-80B at least) only have 12 VDC on the

K2 say 1A and 200V. Am I missing something??

Thanks,
Don, WB5HAK

The K2/100 can handle the voltage/current requirements . But he
relay in the Ameritron amps is not the fastest relay to pick -- it
takes at least 50ms or more.
During that time the K2/100 sees a high SWR during this time and shuts
down the amp, so you start sending and the amp has no output - and you
never know if you aren't watching the meters. K6XX has a relay
accelerator circuit on his web site that works great in speeding up the
relay - my AL-1200 with this circuit built on a terminal strip has not
failed since I put it in place.
Doesn't happen with other radios and the Ameritron amps Just the
K2/100's.

Re: Re: [Elecraft] Heat related issue

2005-08-02 Thread vze3v8dt
I didn't notice any performance related issues (radiowise, operator is another
story) during Field Day due to heat, but I did at one point touch the top cover
of the K2 and felt that it was quite hot with direct exposure to sunlight as
well. My solution was to actually turn on the tabletop fan to cool the radio
case. I'd been trying to tough it out and not use the fan, but when it came
to the radio I figured whatever extra comforts could be afforded were
acceptable! Fortunately the fan was running off 110V AC so it didn't give
extra drain on the battery.

Next year I have prepared 4 solar cells (5 to 6W each) that can charge the
battery or be used to run a DC fan if necessary! Chances are it'll be raining
all weekend instead.

Re: Re: Re: [Elecraft] Heat related issue

2005-08-02 Thread vze3v8dt
That is correct. As we read the rules, only the radio equipment needed to use
the emergency power which in our case was battery. We did run a generator to
operate one A/C unit in a black trailer and only because the long run of cable
from up at the house had too much voltage drop causing the logging compuker to
suffer during brownout conditions. Other amenities were operated off
commercial mains, although they could have been run off a generator as well.
Amenities mostly included the fan beer cooler.

[Elecraft] KAF2 clock cell life

I forget when I got my KAF2, but it was pretty much
right when they came out.

My clock seesm to lose its marbles a lot these days.
I figure it might be the lithium cell. Wonder how
long they are supposed to last for in this
application?

I have a picoammeter here at work. Maybe I could hook
it up and find out what the thing really draws when
off.

Until I get a chance to do that (ha! next year, maybe)
maybe some other long-time K2/KAF2 owner has
experienced the clock issue.

[Elecraft] 88' CF doublet

2005-08-02 Thread Steve L.
Thanks for the input on the heat, I agree it just
overheated due to abuse (sometimes I do that, too).

I got some private requests for information about my
field-use 88' CF doublet, so here's how I do it,
designed for lightest weight:

Wire for antenna and feedline: 26 AWG 19-strand
copperweld, purchased from Davis RF. This wire is very
lightweight yet extremely strong and flexible with an
excellent insulation. I highly recommend it.

Bottom of this page, their PN POLYS-26
http://www.davisrf.com/ham1/flexweve.htm
(I'm not affiliated with them in any way, all that
usual stuff)

I used 1/4 black irrigation tubing for the spreaders.
Drilled a 5/64 hole with 1.5 spacing, then threaded
them onto the wire. No glue or other attachment
required. Yes, this takes some time but the finished
product is GREAT! I spaced the spreaders about every
10 on the line.

For the center insulator, I cut a scrap piece of 1/4
thick Lexan, drilled holes at 1.5 spacing and
soldered ring lugs onto the feedline and antenna
wires. Using SS
wingnut HW, this assembled/disassembles easily in the
field into three pieces, making it easier to store and
also to install in the field. I fill the ring lugs
crimp area with hot melt glue for strain relief
(sounds dumb, works great).

End insulators are small pieces of 1/2 PVC cut and
drilled. Simple, cheap.

I use a cheap-o plastic extension cord spooler to
spool the feedline and antenna wire onto, making
unspooling a tangle-free event. Think Christmas tree
string lights here, same thing.

[Elecraft] KX-1 mods

David, k3tue

On transmit, and with the R11 and R30 power mods added (and R30 cranked
down a little to keep power under 4 Watts) power on 40 and 30M
Is 4 watts, while on 20M it is only 2.7 watts. This is not in spec.
At 9.0V, 40M and 30M are 1.4 watts; 20M is 0.82 watts- also not in spec.
The low 20M RF power problem existed before installing the 30M unit.

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Portable Battery Pak Question

2005-08-02 Thread John R. Lonigro

Jonathan:
There would be no problem using the 7ah gel cell if you ran the K2 at 5
Watts. 50 Watts is something else. First of all, the 7ah rating is
based on a 20 hour discharge. This means you will get 7ah out of the
battery if you draw 350 ma for 20 hours. But you won't be able to draw
7 amps for 1 hour. With the K2, you'd get about 24 hours of
receive-only with that battery. And I suspect the K2 running 50 Watts
will draw a lot more than 7 amps. At 50 Watts, I'm guessing you might
be able to do some heavy operating for 2-3 hours before the battery
bites the dust. My suggestion would be to stick to 5 Watts, unless a
desired contact can't hear you, then crank it up as needed.

Good luck and 73's,
