[Elecraft] Ernesto's Hex Key Cover

2005-08-06 Thread PDouglas12
Hi Guys,

Has anyone ordered a cover from Ernesto in Puerto Rico? How did it work
out? I ordered my Hex Key cover from him by postal money order (his only
accepted form of payment) in MAY. Despite numerous cordial emails from him
advising that the cover was completed and promising a tracking number, I've
received
nothing. Anyone else have a problem with him? I have postponed opening my
Hex Key box until the cover came, so it would remain dust free in my shack,
but this is becoming silly.

Sounds somehow familiar. Check the resistor packs.

[Elecraft] Finally a *real* Elecrafter

2005-08-06 Thread Dan Romanchik
I hate to admit this, but I finally finished the KX1 I
purchased over a year and a half ago. I made good progress
in the beginning, then ran into a snag, so I decided to set
it aside for a while. That "while" turned out to be over a year.

At any rate, #577 is now live and on the air. Power output
(on 40m, at least) is pretty good at 3.5 - 3.8W with a 12V
DC supply.

My first contact was with WD0K last night, with the KX1
connected to my 40m dipole. What a rush it was to have him
answer my call!

After making that contact, I finished building the antenna
tuner, and my second contact this morning was with W0UE in
Missouri with the antenna tuner inline. Both stations gave
me a 559 report.

I've been a subscriber to this list for more than a year,
but now I feel like a *real* Elecrafter.

Re: [Elecraft] k2 low output solution.

2005-08-06 Thread Matt Osborn
Hi Pat,

There are three two signals fed into the KSB2 that directly affect
power output. One is V RFDET which controls the base of Q1 and the
other is ALC which is applied to the collector of Q1. Since removing
Q1 makes no difference, V RFDET isn't likely the cause. But the ALC
on the collector of Q1 remains in play.

V RFDET has three sources, D9 on the K2 RF board, the SWR bridge on
the KAT2 and the XVTR ALC on the K60XV option.

The ALC signal comes from the KAP100 (or other external power
amplifier) and is fed back through the KIO2 to the K2 control board's
AUX IO P4 and then sent on to pin 9 of J11 which is fed to the KSB2.

Since V RFDET and ALC are both derived from actual power measurements,
they are more likely to cause power problems that are band related.

Disconnecting the KIO2 (and KAT2 if installed) should be an easy test.

[Elecraft] Microphone Question

I just purchased the Heil Proset-K2 Headset for my K2, primarily for portable

the Proset to the not-yet-purchased desk mike?  Any suggestions on what to buy;
what to do? Thanks in advance.

If I want to connect my KPA100 to an Ameriton AL-811H, what should I

It seems that Relay control conector behind the AL-811H is keyed when
grounded, and the K2/KPA100 is keyed when positive !?!?

[Elecraft] K2 TX power cutoff?

2005-08-06 Thread Ken Bessler

Occasionally, when at 100% SSB power (15.2w), I get
audio reports indicating my transmitter is cutting back my
power.

I also see "Hi Cur" flash on sometimes. I have the Cal Cur
set to 3.7A. Receive current is i0.28 on a SEC 1223 (23a)
switching power supply / backup SLA battery setup running
at 13.7v.

I fixed the problem by cutting back power to 15.0w.

Q: is this normal? Is 3.7A for Cal Cur too high?

Rig is K2 / KSB2 / KAT2 / KIO2 / K160RX.
Freq is 7.253.50 Lsb into a 40m inverted V @ 40'
Untuned SWR is 1.4:1 but I'm using a KAT2 so
my SWR is 1:1.

The most obvious suggestion is to raise your current limit a bit. The
current demands go up fast as you push the rig to full power. I'm sure you
considered that and, as you probably suspected, that may not be the best
solution.

Two questions to consider are:

 1) Are you setting the POWER for a level above what the rig will actually
produce? If you aren't sure, set the POWER to maximum and press TUNE.
Whatever power is indicated is the actual maximum power the K2 will produce
on that band. Don't set the POWER control above that point. You won't get
any additional power output. Remember, the reading you see when you adjust
the POWER control is the *requested* power, not the actual power. Setting it
above what the rig will produce does no good at all.

 2) Do you really want to run more than 10 watts on SSB? The linearity of
the finals in the K2 decreases as the power level is raised above 10 watts.
That's not an issue on CW but if you want the cleanest signal the rig can
produce on SSB, you should limit it to ten watts. Ten watts is only 1.8 dB
below 15 watts. On most S-meters that less than 1/4 of on S-unit.

Thanks, Ron. I normally run only 5w but this was on a local rag chew and
I wanted to see how hot the case got near the finals.

It's been my experience that even with marginal conditions (when even
QRO dosen't work), as long as you have a decent antenna, 5w is plenty
even on SSB. Now if I'm ever forced to use a marginal antenna, I'll
consider going to 10w (not 15.2 - thanks for the heads up!) or maybe
100w.

[Elecraft] QRP or QRO (WAS:] K2 TX power cutoff?)

-

I enjoy QRP work too, when I'm working other QRP stations. I keep my power
output near 5 watts around the QRP calling frequencies. When I'm roaming the
bands and have the wick turned up on my K2/100 to a full 100 watts out, and
if another station says they're running QRP AND has a decent signal, I'll
QRP to match. If the other signal isn't real good, it's not uncommon for
that operator to have trouble copying if I QRP as well so I'll stay QRO.
Personally, I get a kick out of digging for whispers in the noise at times,
so I'm likely to respond to a very weak signal and not complain about a
signal dancing in the noise.

Of course, when CDX are good even QRPp can boom in from almost anywhere.

When considering QRO, I avoid getting excited unless I can jump my power by
a factor of 8 to 10. For example, it makes sense to me to add a 100 watt amp
to a 10 to 15 watt K2. That pushes up my signal about 1-1/2 S-units at the
other end. Any less of an increase is of marginal value, in my experience.

So, if I were to QRO further I'd not consider it worthwhile to go from 100
watts unless I ran something in the range of 800 to 1000 watts.

Most QRPers have had the fun of going extreme QRPp when the bands are open
and noticing how tiny of a signal can still be copied. But there's another
experiment that's also very informative, even when the bands aren't at their
best. If copy is decent, have the other station cut power by half - 3-dB or
about 1/2 S-unit - and see if you can really notice the difference.
Sometimes I can't even be sure of a 6 dB change, a drop to 1/4 the original
power by the other station, under typical band conditions with QSB, etc.

[Elecraft] Need help with test stage one power up problems on K2

2005-08-06 Thread Jess Gypin
Hi all,

So far I thought I was doing great. Just to save some time I thought I would
ask the collective before I go digging for misplaced components and solder
bridges.

I am building a K2 for a friend. I am at the first point of power up
testing. Control board, front panel and a few components on the RF board. I
got the INFO 201 for about 10 seconds, then the display flashed Elecraft and
then 7100.00 as it should. Now the problem. No front panel function. At all.
No buttons work and the frequency will not change via the encoder. Also one
in 5 power ups the LED display will light all segments and the backlight on
the display will come on, but that is all. I have done a good visual and see
no components unsoldered or shorts. I am extremely careful when building and
usually don't have any problems when building. Maybe it is just my turn. Any
and all suggestions would be appreciated. I am thinking firmware perhaps.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2005-08-06 Thread Kevin Rock

Hello Folks,
Another fine day today. Well except for the mountain beaver deciding
our foundation was meant for hole digging. But we will deal with him.
Means I'll not be hanging any wire antennas but hacking down the last
year's growth of alder. But the back 'yard' needs a clearcut! The
bracken fern are getting wiped out by the rodent so I'll just complete the
job and take out his cover too.

I finally beat a bit of VHDL into submission but all of my software
training has not prepared me for creating circuitry via high level
languages. Small changes in the VHDL make major differences in the
digital circuitry. More education is necessary before I start crafting
CPUs on the fly! Fascinating stuff though. Maybe one day we will be able
to flash a new processor into our Elecraft rigs ;) Wayne does have a few
things up his sleeve but we do read the same trade journals :)

Tomorrow we will try the 20 meter net but not the 40 meter one. Forty
meters is quite noisy at our regular time so I'll wait until the sun
starts setting earlier before I reinstate it. The sun is already showing
signs of autumn but a few months will help the band get stronger. That
also means 20 meters will start getting worse. It's the nature of the
business.

   Please join us:
Sunday 2300z (Sunday 4pm PDT) 14050 kHz

Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for net details. Thank you
Dan.

See you tomorrow evening,
Kevin. KD5ONS

Good luck in the remainder of the North American QSO Party! Sounds like
folks are having a great time.

   KJR

RE: [Elecraft] Need help with test stage one power up problems on K2

2005-08-06 Thread Jess Gypin
Quick update. I checked the 4 MHZ oscillator and it is working. On the
control board that is. Still no joy. I also unseated, reseated all of the
socketed chips and checked for bent, misaligned pins. Socketed chips are as
they should be. Also at the suggestion of another, checked to make sure the
"lock" was not engaged. Still no joy.

Subject: [Elecraft] Need help with test stage one power up problems on
K2

Re: [Elecraft] Need help with test stage one power up problems on K2

2005-08-06 Thread Matt Osborn
Front panel's U3 powers the shaft encoder, the push buttons and the
pots, makes it look guilty, but it has nothing to do with the LCD
display which also fails once every 5 power ups.

The control board seems to initialize itself properly whenever the
LCDs work, so that will be somewhere down on the list of
possibilities.

That leaves the three connecters, the front panel's P1 to the RF
board, the RF board's J8 to the control board and its mate, P2 on the
control board. Some open and some intermittent connections would
aptly describe the problems you're experiencing.

I'd focus on those connectors before doing anything else.
