Re: [Elecraft] Two Band Moxon/wire beam

2005-09-27 Thread Charles Greene

Stuart<

Thank you for the insight. I calculated the % the wire lengths were
off by % the frequency was off, and I also "moved" the model up in
frequency (by shortening wire lengths in the model) by the amount it
differed from the measurement. In other words, the actual was about
200 KHz below the model, so I moved the model up 200 KHz. The model
was at the same height as the measurements. Both techniques produced
results that were close. One thing I found was to not change the
wire spacing at the ends, but just to change the length of wires
between the main supports. I will wait until we hoist it to the
final height which I estimate to be near 30' and take some more
measurements then trim based on that. I think we can operate with
the existing lengths as the top band edge is within the 2:1 SWR
bandwidth at 21'; it may be a little off at 30' as the resonant
frequency goes down as the height is increased, but we don't have to
operate near the top end of the band. We have a LDG tuner, so it
should be able to tune ok. A comment on the vertical pattern. For
field day and special events the high angle of elevation of radiation
on 40 meters you get at a height of 30' is not a disadvantage as we
are looking for local contacts instead of DX. About 90% of the US is
in the horizontal beamwidth from RI. Just northern New England and
southern Florida is out side the 3 dB beamwidth. It used to bother
me that with a dipole 1/2 of the radiated power was going toward
Europe, which really doesn't participate in field day.

Charles,
With dual band close spaced beams, everything interacts.

You can try adjusting the wire lengths by the percentage you were off your
target frequency, or just operate them as they fell. They will vary with
height, and there is no compelling need to have them exactly resonant in
cases like this, as long as your are getting about the beam action you want.

Your SWR actual at 21 feet seem to be OK for operations. Or just use a
tuner to touch up the match.

[Elecraft] KAT100-1 Problem

2005-09-27 Thread Roy Morris
When I first turn on my K2/100 the KAT100-1 works fine. After it has been on
for a while, the KAT100-1 refuses to retune to a new frequency at opposite ends
of the band on 80 or 40 meters (for example). There are no relay clicks and
the SWR LEDs light up showing an out of resonance condition on the band being
retuned. The KAT100 memory works fine when scrolling through all the other
bands where resonance was previously set.
During this condition I went to the ATU menu and tried to edit AUTO. Turning
the VFO knob would display PA ANT 1 only and then go back to AUTO. Tapping
ANT 1/2 shows NOT INST. Also during this condition TUNE will not automatically
go back to receive until TUNE is pushed again.
It seems to me I may have a microprocessor problem in the KAT100-1. KAT MCU
1.05 is installed. When it works, it works well on all bands including 60
meters. I have checked for solder traces and resoldered all connections in the
KAT100-1. The K2/100 works fine into a manual antenna tuner. Any suggestions
would be appreciated. Thanks Roy Morris W4WFBNo virus found in this outgoing message.

[Elecraft] K2 and FSK

2005-09-27 Thread Sverre Holm
I have read the postings on the problem of having to set the AF gain as
bands are changed with FSK and PSK31 modes, and I seem to recall that I have
seen a product that automates this.

I believe it was a hardware device that monitored the PSK31 output and
adjusted the AF level for optimum distortion level. It was independent of
the rig in use, and maybe it can be used for other digital modes like FSK
also - or that the idea can be adapted to other modes?

Does anyone have a clue or a web-pointer to what this is?

[Elecraft] Recommended Solder (lead/tin) and where to buy

2005-09-27 Thread Eric Swartz WA6HHQ - Elecraft
We have added a new page to our builder's resource page with recommended
lead content solders and where to buy them from a number of U.S. vendors.

Don't forget that we also have links for 'Ask Dr. solder', 'Recommended
Solder Stations' and a 'Soldering Tutorial' on the Builder's page.

See: http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/K2info.html

I've copied the solder info below.

Thanks to Tom Hammond, N0SS, for compiling this list for us!

73, Eric and Wayne

-

The following vendors will carry the following lead-content solders as
long as they are available for sale and use in the United States. (Which
appears to be for the foreseeable future.) These solders are widely
available and can be ordered via each distributor's web page or over the
phone.

Note: All vendors shown below offer flux-cored solder wires with other
flux chemistries and content. The products shown below have been tested
and found suitable for assembly of Elecraft kits. Other flux types and
chemistries may (or may not) be suitable, but have not been tested.

[Elecraft] K1 or KX-1 ???

2005-09-27 Thread Ray & Susan Albers
Kevin writes,

The KX1 has great reports: heck I give them all the time during ECN. They
work quite well in the hands of the best (Ray, K2HYD and Rick, KL7CW
please take a bow). Seems like they can beat their way through pileups to
get my attention ;) I never truly believe them when they tell me 3 watts
but it must be true.

Thanks for the compliment, Kevin - keep it up and I'll lobby for promoting you
from 5th to at least 4th class!

First time I saw a KX-1 it was still an unbuilt kit, but looked so cool I
couldn't resist. (BTW I won't mention names to proect the guilty but the ham
who showed me the kit still hasn't finished building it!). And I do get great
results with simple wires (definitely get the built in tuner!) and an honest 3W
with an external gel-cell.

The K1 has more band capabilities (and maybe more power while running on
internal batteries?) but is a little bigger with all accessories. But, how
about this: when you're car-camping or on a motor trip to visit friends and
relatives, take the shoes off your K2 and bring it along. And then get a KX-1
plus maybe a 2.3AH gel-cell (not very heavy) for the the hiking / backpacking
trips. And THEN get a K-1 for backup!

Having one of these on my shopping list, but not yet decided which

Ray,
I use a 10-cell AA holder from Mouser.com ($2) with 2500mAH Energizer
NiMH AA's ($10 for 4, you need 10). It fits right under the KX1 for when
you need that "QRO" boost. It weighs less, but it doesn't have the low
self-discharge that the gel cells do, so you do have to recharge it
frequently.

For $39.35 the audio level is adjusted automatically as bands are changed.
But only for PSK31, not for FSK as far as I can tell, but maybe with some

Re: [Elecraft] K2 and FSK

2005-09-27 Thread Leigh L Klotz, Jr.
I wrote a Linux program for the PSKMeter, and AA6E re-wrote it with a
nice GUI, and I now use his. KF6VSG's site has some presentations on
what the firmware does, and what the PC software does, and I used those
and some email exchanges with George to write the Linux version.

The firmware does a number of voltage samples of its ADC which is across
the RF line, and returns the raw values. The envelope values are all
positive, so you look for a max, assume the min is the correct number of
samples away and barrel-shift the data around and then look at that 1/4
wave to see if it seems to have the right cosine shape, as determined by
a Fourier decomposition into the first 10 or so harmonics. (There is no
need for an FFT because it is really just a single unit of data.)

I heard that the firmware now does PSK63, and I suppose it just samples
twice as fast.

So, you can do anything that you can do with a very small nmber of
envelope samples, all rectified to be positive.

Yes, that's the one, I got several responses, the first after 12
minutes!

For $39.35 the audio level is adjusted automatically as bands are
changed.
But only for PSK31, not for FSK as far as I can tell, but maybe with
some

other PC software it would work even for FSK?

[Elecraft] Tenna Dipper, part II...

2005-09-27 Thread JEAN-FRANCOIS MENARD
Now That I have finished my basic Tenna Dipper Kit. I need to put it
in an enclosure with a little bit bigger switches, buttons BUT,
BUT... one thing

In this kit, if you need to know the frequency that the Tenna Dipper
is, you could just listen to the CW tones, but you will not be able
to know too easely at which frequency you are. very anoying... :-(

Why do not make an external connector on the K2 that is link to the
frequency counter probe connector on the control panel. After you
have selected the CAL FCTR function, connecting the Tenna Dipper
External frequency test point to the K2... you will be able to use
your K2 to display the actual frequency of this little antenna
anylizer and now be able to use more easly the Tenna Dipper on
many different frequencies instead of using it always at a pre-
defined frequency, because it is too hard without proper external
indication.

What an idea ??? Let me guess I will do it tomorrow !! I let
you know "by picture" as soon as possible.

RE: [Elecraft] Tenna Dipper, part II...

2005-09-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
Jean-Francios,

It is quite possible to use the internal counter (CAL FCTR) for external
measurement - just don't forget that the ground must be connected to the
Device Under Test too - the normal K2 counter probe does not connect the
ground at the probe end when measuring inside the K2 because the ground is
continuous inside the K2 - and external probe would need a ground (similar
to a 'scope probe ground). I had had many thoughts about providing a
connector on the left side panel that would accept an external probe, but I
acquired an accurate frequency counter before I got around to implementing
that 'feature'.

RE: [Elecraft] D 104 mic with K2

2005-09-27 Thread W3FPR - Don Wilhelm
The D 104 mic (unamplified version) needs to look into a very high impedance
(50k ohms or greater). That mic was developed in the days of vacuum tubes
with mic amplifier input inpedances in the 50k to 1 megohm range.

Modern transceivers present an impedance of something close ot 600 ohms at
the mic input jack, so to properly use a D 104 with modern transceivers, you
will need an amplifier stage - the gain can be low, but the input impedance
must be very high and the design output impedance should be in the vicinity
of 600 ohms. A few circuits to do that have been published in QST over the
past 2 or 3 years. Sorry, but I don't have a specific issue reference.

I took a different route with my D 104, I put a Heil HC-5 element in the D
104 head - it works FB, but the Heil elements need about 3 to 6 dB of gain
to properly drive the K2, so a preamp stage is still needed (or the KI6WX
increased gain mod of the KSB2 - which is what I use).

Re: [Elecraft] Tenna Dipper, part II...

2005-09-27 Thread Lambs, Dick & Judy
I'd agree that the Tenna Dipper is a simple, inexpensive alternative
to the antenna analyzer. Another simple and inexpensive alternative
is an antenna noise bridge of the type that uses the transceiver
itself as the frequency determining element. These gadgets are broad-
banded so they cover the whole HF spectrum continuously. Palomar
Enginners, Heathkit, MFJ, and perhaps others made them.

Ten Tec sells one in kit form for $19: See:

I found another kit at :

RE: [Elecraft] D 104 mic with K2

2005-09-27 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Don has it right, but it depends upon how new the D-104 is. The versions
made the last 20 years or so, using the same D-104 high-impedance crystal
element we hooked to our tube transmitters half a century back, now has a
transistor amplifier/impedance matching unit in the base. If your unit has
a base plate in the stand that takes a battery, you have one of the newer
units designed for modern rigs.

The schematic of the D-104 amplifier and a nice graph of what a great
communications microphone frequency response curve looks like are at the
Astatic site:
http://www.astatic.com/cb/d104.htm

It should be pretty simple to duplicate if you have one of the older mics.
Just about any NPN transistor can be used (2N, etc).

[Elecraft] Loctite Multicore solder

2005-09-27 Thread Joseph Trombino Jr

Howdy Fellow Builders:

I was "googling" Loctite Multicore (formerly Ersin Multicore) and found a
source to order from.

The source is RSHughes and the solder I ordered can be found at:

   http://rshughes.com/products/mm00979.html

I ordered two rolls of the .020" 63/37, Loctite (and RSHughes) number
MM00979.

The solder is listed at $9.50 per 1lb roll..very reasonable given the
price quotes I have seen on other vendor pages.

You need to go thru the on-line process of setting up an account first, then
you can order what you want.

They will ship UPS ground and an office in Raleigh, NC will be sending it to
me so I hope the shipping isn't too bad.

I have wanted to try this stuff for several years but finding a reasonable
price has been a problem until today.

Just thought I'd pass along what I believe is a good deal.
