[Elecraft] K2 - bargraph reading OK?
Hi all, I just finished Alignment and Test, Part II on my K2 S/N 5361. All readings are well within spec and I've also quickly compared the receive on 40m to my TS-570DG. It's afternoon here so no whopping broadcast signals yet, but so far what I've heard with the K2 seems very promising. I only have one question. When I disconnect the antenna from the K2 and put the RF gain to maximum, the S meter shows S7 while I would expect it to drop down to bottom scale. The meter has been calibrated during the testing of the display unit, all was well then. Connected to the same antenna as my TS570 the K2 shows around 20dB higher signal levels on the meter. Should I recalibrate the meter? According to the manual recalibration is only necessary after changing the AGC threshold which I haven't done. I've only aligned the IF amp and the 40m bandpass filter as per the instructions on p64 of the manual. I do not have a signal generator here so if you're sending in any hints please take this into account. Re: [Elecraft] Coax Switch between two rigs
Maybe you will remain lucky. I just think it is a risky practice and I will continue to keep my transceiver outputs separated. All it takes is one time to smoke a nice rig and you learn. I guess it is like using the ground terminal (third prong) of an 120v AC outlet for an RF ground. Poor practice, but guys do it and say it works. I think my K2 is an excellent rig and will not risk it by hooking it up to a coax switch with another rig. 73, Bob Scott K3YT (originally WD8PLA) 29 years of heating the air with wire) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2, MD-2 MIC AND MFJ-434 VOICE KEYER
Is anybody using the K2 with the MD-2 mic and the MFJ-434 Voice Keyer, please? I borrowed an MFJ-434 Voice Keyer for the weekend to help my wife June (M0BUE) play in the ARRL DX SSB Contest as W4/M0BUE, but cannot get it to work with the K2 and MD-2. I have tried changing the various jumpers inside the keyer but that doesn't seem make any difference. Does anybody know which of the three options (Yaesu, Kenwood or Icom) of the voice keyer I should use with the K2? Could the problem be anything to do with the way the MD-2 mic plug is wired, perhaps not being compatible with the mic socket on the keyer? Any help and suggestions will be appreciated by June. Just wondering about solder quality... Getting ready to build my K2 and want to make sure I have the right solder for the job. The elecraft site lists several brands/types. This week I stopped into Circuit Specialists in Mesa AZ and bought some solder. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - bargraph reading OK?
Hi When you calibrated the meter during alignment and test part 1 the receiver was not functioning because it did not exist yet. Now that you have the 40 meter receiver working you will need to reset the calibration on the S-meter. You would normally wait until the K2 is completed to do all of the final calibration but you can do it at this stage if you want and then check it at the final test and calibration. Re: [Elecraft] Solder?
Hi I have no experience with that brand of solder. However if it seems to make good shiny joints with a good filet then it should be OK. I would rather use 63/37 .025 or .020 for pc-board work. The 60/40 has the potential for a cold solder joint if the lead moves while the solder is cooling from a liquid to a solid. The 63/37 does not do this. I find the .031 too large and the tendency is to apply too much to the joint. With the .025 or .020 you can control the amount applied easier. I have used Kester and Multicore. Kester is available from Mouser and Multicore is part of Locktite now but I think they have a minimum order requirement. Mouser does not have a minimum order. You may be able to get Kester from DigiKey also. A lot of the difference in solders is the flux not the solder itself. Kester offers many different flux cores. For kit building Kester 44 or 285 with a flux content of 3.3% is the correct solder. For experienced builders Kester 245 no-clean can be used but should be avoided by beginners. This solder comes in 1.1% and 2.2% flux content. This flux is clear in color and with the low content it does not show up on the boards so can be left on the board or is easier to clean if you prefer to clean the boards. However it requires more skill because of the low flux content. RE: [Elecraft] K2 - bargraph reading OK?
Glenn, The manual statement is that CALS HI and CALS LO must be adjusted after changing the AGC Threshold - the converse is not necessarily true - that is not the only time that one should readjust the S meter settings. One would need to reset CALS LO and CALS HI after any change that results in a gain change on the K2 receive chain prior to the AGC takeoff point - and that is what happened when you added a working receiver and aligned the IF. You may want to optimize the AGC threshold and reset the S-meter after you have everything else correctly aligned. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Should I recalibrate the meter? According to the manual recalibration is only necessary after changing the AGC threshold which I haven't done. I've only aligned the IF amp and the 40m bandpass filter as per the instructions on p64 of the manual. I do not have a signal generator here so if you're sending in any hints please take this into account. [Elecraft] I/O Port issue?
I want to control my K2 via my computer. My I/O port was built when I built the KPA100 last summer. I have built the cable and have double check the connections. Using Hyperterminal, I receive no info from the K2. I also receive nothing from the K2 when using Ham Radio Delux. I use this program with my FT-1000D successfully. I am able to send commands to my K2 and have it react correctly. There isn't too much documentation in the manuals about the I/O port. Does anyone have any ideas on where I should look first? Again, I have double checked the cable. Don - KA6AKH K2 - 1683 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening All, Today, during a VE session, I was asked an interesting question. We were getting ready for the CW exams when one of the future Generals asked if I knew anything about the Elecraft K2/100. He wanted to know a bit about building and operating it. I smiled and told him I did know a little but suggested he register for the Reflector to get more answers. Hopefully he did so when he got home and will receive this email amoungst his first from Elecraft. I gave him the times and frequencies listed below but reinforcement does not hurt. Now that we have a new crop of folks interested in operating CW we can all hope they enjoy the mode and keep using it. It is the most interesting mode of all in amateur radio for me. The weather is phenomenal. After snow a few days ago we are experiencing a very sunny and warm day. I spent the morning hours hauling and splitting more wood so I was warm when I got into my truck for the journey into town. Quite a few test takers. All but one either upgraded or got their new license. Next door they were working on their First Aid skills with CERT classes so the fire station was quite full of people. Our amateur radio community is very well received by the emergency management establishment in Washington County. Ms Pat worked for them as a dispatcher during the 1970s and we trained quite a number of the ARES personnel in emergency procedures. Community service and working for the VEC were only a few of the ways we paid back a little. Wednesday evening, at 7:30 PST, forty meters was open into Oklahoma. However, twenty minutes later it was gone. But I got to work with my mentor for a good fifteen minutes. This bodes well for tomorrow's forty meter net an hour and a half earlier. The sun may not have any spots but there is still some activity exciting the ions above us. Does not take much to allow the CW ops to communicate. I forgot, the head VE asked me to work with him passing a bit of traffic on NTS. I may try that again; it is a good way to keep one's CW skills honed. Please join us: Sunday 2300z (Sunday 3pm PST) 14050 kHz Monday 0200z (Sunday 6pm PST) 7045 kHz Visit our web site: http://ecn.visionseer.com/ for further details. Thank you for the web space Dan. Thanks Bill. The answer is yes to all of your questions. Hi Don, did you turn it on in the K2??? SECondary menu, Port = ON Make sure the programs are set to 4800 baud, 8 bits, no parity, 1 or 2 stop bits. (Something I trip over all the time) Are you sure you have the correct COM port number on your PC? Now-a-days the COM port number is configurable, check the windows control panel entry. Good luck! 73, Bill N2BC Don Clark wrote: I want to control my K2 via my computer. My I/O port was built when I built the KPA100 last summer. [Elecraft] PWRgate
Elecrafters: Has anyone used a West Mountain PWRGate PG40S between the power supply and the K2/100.
