[Elecraft] Simultaneous audio out digital out for K2 -- safe?
With my Alinco DX-70TH, I have become used to using the waterfall spectrum display to zero-beat CW signals. Just spin the tuning knob until the signal is sitting on the beat frequency, and you're tuned. I also like to use my ears to get a rough find on PSK and other digital signals. Both are these are very easy with that setup because I get audio out of the speaker *and* audio into the sound card at the same time. The K2 cuts off the speaker when I insert the cable into the ext speaker jack, which makes it almost impossible to do what I describe above. It is pretty obvious how to jumper the ext speaker jack to prevent this, but I don't know if I would be running any risks by doing so. Do I need additional isolation circuitry? Is the audio power out sufficient to drive both speaker and sound card? Has anyone else done this? Re: [Elecraft] Xtal Socket - a bit off topic
And if you take two FT-243 xtals and tape them upside down and back to back you can electrically switch between two crystals at a time and flip them over mechanically for a total of 4 frequencies (if there is headroom for the pins that will be sticking above the top of the crystal that is plugged in). RE: [Elecraft] Simultaneous audio out digital out for K2 -- safe?
Cathy, I don't know how much your soundcard would load down the speaker line (I would tend to believe not much), but you certainly should not hurt anything, so give it a try. If you want a separate audio output line for the soundcard, take a look at the K2 Fixed Audio Output article on my website http://w3fpr.qrprqdio.com for some ideas. I do have boards available for $3 each plus 50 cents shipping, sorry, but I am out of the kits and do not plan to re-order. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- With my Alinco DX-70TH, I have become used to using the waterfall spectrum display to zero-beat CW signals. RE: [Elecraft] Trouble with PLL Cal K2 #5061
Pat, The frequency is the problem - the microprocessor is waiting to see a frequency near 12100 kHz. Go back and check the PLL range to see if the frequency is correct at the high end of the range. If PLL high is OK, then look carefully at the capacitors in the VFO Range Select area are correct and that all the varactors are correct and correctly oriented. Recheck the voltages at the left end of R30 to be certain all band edges are within range. If you have everything correct, you can check the frequency of the VFO when tuned to 7000 kHz, use CAL FCTR with the probe in TP1 and you should see something close to 11915 kHz. If you have that frequency, then CAL PLL should run fine. From your chart, it would seem that your VFO frequency is too low for all bands, and that must be corrected first. If you do the above checks and find the frequency is still off, send another note and we will try to help, but it may take some detailed analysis of the VFO and the drive from the PLL synthesizer. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I've made quite a bit of progress with #5061 but have hit a snag on the PLL calibration. [Elecraft] Wider IF modification for SSB
I found a whitepaper written by K16WX that discusses various modifications to the K2 to widen the IF. I do a lot of digital mode operations. Widening the the IF would let me scan through a wider AF window. I have a very recent K2, complete just last month. If I understand the document, I don't need the 2nd Xfil ssb modification. It is already incorporated. I also don't have to worry about ordering a better set of crystals because the K2 ships with the better parts. I think that all I need do is replace the caps per the table shown in the document. I don't think anyone sells a prepackaged bag of parts for this, so I'll be ordering parts online from Mouser unless someone knows a better place to order a few odd caps. As long as my BFO can trim to 4916.5khz, I see no reason that I shouldn't open the IF to 2.5khz. I suppose that I might lose something if there is a strong signal close to my frequency. There is no IF shift so I can't move the IF filter, but I can switch in a narrower xfil. I don't see this as an issue. Any comments? RE: [Elecraft] Wider IF modification for SSB
Rich, The 2.3 kHz wide filter that is detailed in that paper has since been incorporated into the KSB2, but is referred to as a 2.4 kHz filter (now the 'stock' width - the difference can be found in the measurement of filter width - John, KI6WX measured at -3dB and Elecraft measures at -6dB. If you want to increase the bandwidth to the 2.6 kHz filter (2.5), Elecraft sells a kit of capacitors to do that job. Look on the K2 Spare parts and mods order page. If your BFO range was as specified in the K2 manual, you should be able to align it with no problem - I believe the IF crystals are now a bit lower than they were when KI6WX wrote that paper. I have built many filters with the 2.6 kHz bandwidth and have not had any alignment problem for normal SSB - should you try to move the passband upward in frequency for digital modes, you could run into BFO limitations. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I found a whitepaper written by K16WX that discusses various modifications to the K2 to widen the IF. [Elecraft] Simultaneous audio out digital out for K2 -- safe?
Hi Cathy, I take the audio from the K2 headphone jack and feed it directly to the line-in jack on my sound card. By un-checking the Mute box on the soundcard control for line-in, I can hear the K2 on the computer speakers. Adjust the volume with the line-in slider and/or the volume control on the speakers. Not as cool as a constant-output port on the K2, but it works! 73, Len, KDØRC K2 - 2239 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Solder?
Solder is a very subjective thing. The thing to do with any solder unfamiliar to you is use it on some cables, components, connectors and evaluate the quality of joints it makes with your soldering tools, skill, etc. You can see if it takes more or less heat than old solder you are familiar with. You can see if it makes shiny, well wetted joints. You can see if it has left over flux residue in excess to a other clean solders. Make sure the formulation is suited to the heat range tip you have on your soldering iron. Trying it out on real world components and cable is the best way to find out if it flows well, and makes a good joint. Check the joints you make after a month for any signs of corrosion as a further test. [Elecraft] What a night
After I got home from dinner I worked my CW mentor for about an hour on 40 meters with my K2/100. That was fun. Then I got back to my NC2030 and got another stage debugged and working as per directions. Then I got on the computer and banged out a bit more of the Barnes-Hut algorithm I am working on. Tomorrow I get paid to attend a robotics seminar. Can life get any better? Amateur radio is almost as much fun as what I do for a living ;) The Elecraft CW Net is great fun but what can compare to designing robots? This one is to capture infrared data from a helium blimp, transmit it via RF, capture it on the other end, and overlay the data with other data gathered on the ground. I also got to design and build the antennas on both ends of the system. My grad thesis project is starting to pay a few dividends. Take care, Kevin. KD5ONS PS. Now I better do the dishes :) KJR ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
