[Elecraft] K2 SSB Filter (OP1) question ...
Hi Everyone, I've just fitted the KSB2 adaptor to my K2 (#5294), and seem to be experiencing some oddness. When I select OP1 as the filter, the signal seems to be greatley attenutated (no signal strength on the S meter), and you need to have the AF control at near maximum to hear any output. In contrast, selecting FL3 (1.8KHz), produces much more 'normal' sounding SSB. Somethings obviously amiss somewhere - does anyone have any thoughts? [Elecraft] K2 SSB Filter (OP1) question ...
Ken - I installed/built KSB2 in my K2 # 5422, last month. I got poorly sounding filters, before I went thru an entire SPECTROGRAM rev 5.7 filter and BFO settings alignment. Spectrogram 5.7, is the last free version of this software. I used my laptop's sound card system (mike input), to run the K2 filter alignments, using a stereo cable with double stereo tips. (K2 remote speaker connector to PC laptop's mike input) On the KSB2's manual, page 10, - did you record and save the calibration number that was included with the SSB filter crystals set (X1-X7)? With this you should have gotten your LSB/USB TRANSMIT BFO FREQUENCIES - for BF1t, etc. Did you ground the crystal cases of X1-X7, as shown on page 10? By the way - I ended up using a Ten Tec 701 mobile ham mike, which I bought from Ten Tec for like $22 us. I've got an install-sheet for the K2, for that mike. The antenna has 100 feet of parallel feed (window ladder line) and there is no way I'll need that much. So what do I do with the excess? Hi Keith, A really neat scheme is to go ahead and cut the ladder line, but install a set of 3 Anderson PowerPole connectors. If you put a dummy third connector in the middle as a spacer the two outer ones are almost exactly spaced for the ladder line. You can put Anderson connector sets on each end of several pieces of line of varying lengths and can then mix-and-match when you get to a field location. I always carry a 40', couple of 20' and a 10' with me whenever I head to the field. Add an 80' run and you'd have BCD :^)) A short pigtail of ladder line with Andersons permanently attached to the balanced line terminals on a tuner makes it quick and easy to attach and remove feeders. If you worry about tension pulling them apart, just use a cable tie to secure the connection. 73 Jim, N5IB ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Spectrogram / Xoscope
Have any linux users gotten Xoscope to work? It's at http://xoscope.sourceforge.net/ When I built my K2 I had a laptop that dual-booted into Windows and linux. So I was able to reluctantly :-) boot into Windows to run Spectrogram when needed. My new army-issued laptop, however, is linux only (gentoo distribution), so I need something like xoscope. But I'm having font problems with xoscope, in particular, text does not show up! Before I spend time troubleshooting I thought I'd see if any of our illustrious list members have already been down that path. Thanks! RE: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Filter (OP1) question ...
Ken, That is a sign that something is amiss with the filter on the SSB board. Check all the diodes and the toroid transformers. Be certain the tiny RFCs do not have any bare wire that is shorting to the crystal cases (slip a piece of paper between the RFC and the xtal case to check). On the RF Board, there is one other thing to check - C179 which is switched in-circuit by Q25 only when the OP1 filter is selected - it should be 100 (101) pf. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Hi Everyone, I've just fitted the KSB2 adaptor to my K2 (#5294), and seem to be experiencing some oddness. Paul, Yes, put the pads in place just in case anything shifts later. You could tape them in place, use rubber cement, a dab of 'Shoe-Goo' or any other glue that is advertized to bond with both rubber and fiberglass. Most glues will bond with the fiberglass, but few will stick to rubber. You only need a tiny bit. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Under these circumstances should I … a) just leave off the rubber pads? or b) use a drop of glue (what kind) to attach the pads to the KXB30 board? or c) just install one of the rubber pads at the center of the KXB30 board where there are no solder pads? Re: [Elecraft] K1 or KX1?
I too have the K1 and like it very much. It is the 4 band version with a KAT1 tuner added. Also have a 2 band board that covers 160 and 80 meters. Have done the backlighting modification and this was well worth the effort!. I too have an HFPacker amp I built. It is an absolutely dynamite pair of shoes for the K1! My only complaint is the hang time on the RF actuated T/R switch is too long. No good for contest use! I tried it on the ARRL 160 meter contest last year. It's OK for casual QSO's but delay too long for CW. One day I will get that fixed. Some day in the future, I'd like to build the K2, probably the QRP version. 73, Sandy W5TVW - Original Message - From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2006 8:28 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K1 or KX1? | I have a K1 (bought someone else's) and a KX1 (built it, added KXB3080 this spring). | | I won't part with either, they do different stuff. | | The K1 is my all-time favorite radio, ever. | | Before I had Elecraft rigs, I had a Wilderness Sierra that I built -- that was my favorite before my K1. RE: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Filter (OP1) question ...
Ken, The mistake I made on my KSB2 adaptor acted/sounds like what you are getting. Have you tried to transmit? Is there audio/RF out? Check the switching diodes found at either end of the Xtal filter section. Is the right end up? Are they installed in the right direction. I got one backwards and got strange sounding receive audio and no transmit signal. I could see depending which diode is wrong your symptoms would appear. There are 8 diodes to choose from (I think). Also check the usual solder bridges, etc There maybe other causes someone else may help if that is the case. Remember that being at audio it doesn't make up for a lot of that receiver's deficiencies. I've used several versions of that WJ receiver and similar Racal products and though they are very good for what they were designed for, IMHO they leave a lot to be desired as a communications receiver. 73, Doug W6JD -- Original message -- From: Alexandra Carter [EMAIL PROTECTED] OT here, but I recently got a Watkins-Johnson 8709 and wow do I ever love it! OK so the bottom case sheet metal is missing, gonna have to replace that with something, and one of the pushbuttons came off and fell on the floor this morning (I pushed it back onto its post) and it's idea of a narrow filter is 2.5kHz, this thing can really dig 'em out. Two questions - #1 do you think this is about as good as a K2 as a reciever, better, or worse, or what? Just curious. And #2, how well do audio filters, or even audio DSP like SGC sells, for narrowing things down for listening to CW? Man this thing is the bees knees. 73 Alex NS6Y ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. These are hifi and I get serious thumps from the K2, even with the AF 1 turned on. This is true with other rigs as well. The SCAF 1 removes this noise. I just need to make sure I don't overdrive the SCAF 1 as it is very sensitive to this. The filter really cleans up less than pure sidetone audio, too. I would like to get some good communication 'phones, without the microphone thingee. Any recommendations. I like the kind that seal out external noise. I like to use a bug but the damper clacking is distracting to me. 73 Rick Dettinger K7MW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] My K2: Shipped On the way to my Builder
Yee-haa!!! Just received the great news that my K2 is on its way to my builder. What with shipping build time, I'm guestimating I'll have the rig by mid to latter part of July. Then let the Fun Begin!!! Have also learned that one of the Hams in my radio club will be using a K2 for the CW station on Field Day. Definitely will be scoping that puppy out! Re: [Elecraft] Watkins-Johnson (now audio filters)
That SCAF sounds fine business. I might well go with one of those when I can. My radio earphones are old WWII can jobs, they work great, they do take some of the noise out. 73 de Alex NS6Y. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net non-Announcement
Hello All, I am pretty sure I'll not be able to run the Elecraft CW Net on Sunday. My first reason was because I would be exhausted from working Field Day. Well, those plans fell through. The venue where I was to participate had to cancel their activities as of a few hours ago. I've not been able to find any other club or group who wants a spare CW op. So, I may just work a little of the Field Day activities from home. I've done that for the last three years but was hoping for some company this year. Maybe I'll find a place on someone's team next year. In any case I hope you all do quite well and hope the propagation favors your antennas at your site. The weather is predicted to reach the 90s on Saturday and Sunday so I'll most likely not get much wood splitting or hauling done. Maybe I should park the truck near the wood pile, turn on the headlights, and work after it cools off. Speaking of wood cutting two new clear cuts have started up within a quarter mile of the house. The large one right next to me is almost done but now it looks like I'll get a few more months of o'dark thirty wake up calls by the log trucks. I keep wondering why I set an alarm since I have to remember to turn it off hours after I wake up! If I do work FD I'll be running under my own call. I am not sure of the letter designation but it will be only one rig on emergency power. I may switch between rigs to try them all out on different antennas but I think since I am a single op I'll be working a 1?? station setup. I should dig up the rules now since my plans have changed. Good luck to you all and hope to hear you on the air, 73, Kevin. [Elecraft] Field Day inspirational message; mini-log/mini-dupe sheets for FD
Many of us look forward to FD all year. It's hard to explain, but stringing up a questionable portable antenna and seeing what you can work is a real rush. Getting outdoors and playing radio makes even stale potato chips taste good. Small mammals and insects will visit you to see if they can help in any way (usually not). I hope you all get out there with your E-rigs (or whatever!) and get on the air, even if only for a few hours, even if just on your back patio. Last year I did a solo backpacking field day using my KX1 (S/N 0001). Here's a photo of my campsite, including roll-up table and chair. Also note the expensive Micro-brew and trail mix -- both required items for a Northern California FD operation, by state law: http://home.comcast.net/~wayneb74/wayne/N6KR_FD_2005.jpg If you're mounting a small QRP Field-Day operation, you may find my mini-log and dupe sheets useful. Together, they fit nicely on a single 8.5 x 11 clip board, reducing required table space. The top third of the clip-board space is used for a stack of log sheets, and the bottom two-thirds is occupied by the dupe sheet. Microsoft Word files for these are at: http://home.comcast.net/~wayneb74/wayne/FD_mini_log.doc http://home.comcast.net/~wayneb74/wayne/FD_mini_dupe_sheet.doc Using Word, you can modify the rows in the dupe sheet to match your anticipated QSOs per call area. For example, in my case I made the 6 and 7 call area rows taller than the others. The dupe sheets are adequate for small FD operations, but you'll need to write small (I suggest using pencil, too). The log sheets each have room for 20 QSOs, plus a scratch area at the right. The dupe sheet includes one page of log at the top. Cut the log sheets into three strips as indicated by the lines below the log entry area. Next, stack the log sheets at the top of the dupe sheet, and slip the whole thing onto a clip board. Feel free to modify and use these files as you wish.
