Re: [Elecraft] Experience with off brand Lithium AAs?
When a line first begins making processors, the % of processors that will pass all the highspeed tests low, while the % that will pass the lower speed tests is greater. So they are priced and spec'd so that the entire run is (hopefully) bought up. If they priced 'em all the same, there would be a shortage of highspeed processors and a surplus of lowspeed ones. It's not just speed, either. Quite often large chunks of circuitry will fail, so they'll be deliberately disabled (fuses on the chip are deliberately blown, or even lasered off) and sold as a different model, for example a 4Meg cache might have a microscopic speck of dust ruining a few rows, so they disable that half of the cache and sell it as a 2Meg cache version, or the really extreme case - you might have half a dual-core CPU disabled and the other half sold as a single-core CPU. It's much better than the alternative, where you used to get about 2 working chips off each wafer - frequently less than a 1% success ratio. -- Nosey Nick Waterman, G7RZQ, K2 #5209. use Std::Disclaimer;[EMAIL PROTECTED] COFFEE.SYS missing Insert cup in cup holder and press any key ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. If you really got a 1GB PC2700 333MHz your set up. I imagine your building yourself a computer. 1 Gig of ram with a 1 Gig swap directory will make a fast computer! I build my own computers from sources on the Internet. The 1 GB RAM has to date been too expensive but looks like my next one may be like yours. 73 Karl --- Do you always get more if you pay more? Absolutely not. But that doesn't make the corollary true. You don't get the same quality when you pay less. Even if you know the part came from the same plant. Ron AC7AC It might. It might not. You left out the other sentence: Do you always get more if you pay more? Absolutely not. My point was that the fact that many products come from the same manufacturers does not mean they are equal. What we often don't know is whether a cheaper product isn't just as good for the intended purposes. Years ago John Glenn, talking about having ridden a Mercury capsule aloft for America's first orbital flight in space, observed that he was placing his life in the hands of those who made millions of parts ..all supplied by the lowest bidder... What he left out was that those parts were bid, tested and supplied by manufacturers working to very complete and exacting specifications. That was my work in the early 60s: Component Engineering, writing component specifications for programs including some of the stuff going into the manned space program. The trick was to pin down every important criteria a part had to meet: whether it was a nut, or a battery, or the turbine that pumped fuel into a rocket motor. The lowest bidder Glenn referred to was the one who could supply parts meeting *every* specification at the lowest cost. Unfortunately, when we're standing in the aisle at the discount store, we don't have a complete set of specifications with us for our intended use nor do the manufacturers offer any detailed specifications or warranties. A long time ago one manufacturer (Ray-O-Vac??) offered to replace any flashlight ruined by a leaking battery. I haven't seen anything like that in years! Still, I buy name brand batteries because I feel more confident using them. And that speaks to something else I learned a long time ago: I, and everyone I've known, makes choices for emotional reasons. We choose what we do based on how we feel about it. Only after doing that do we apply logic to justify the choice! Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Solar Panels
I'm interested in using solar panels to power the K2 for emergency/field day operations and am wondering what sort of experience others have had. The panels seem expensive: about $100 for a 5 watt panel but with battery and a low power draw of the K2, they look like they can sustain operations for extended periods of time. How does this work in practice ? Is there enough 'juice' delivered to keep a station operational ? How about portability ? Thanks to everyone in advance for your responses. It will put out 1200mA which is plenty and more for charging other cells while operating. Here is the link. They also sell a 10 watt version. http://www.ctsolar.com/Expedition20W.htm You will need a controller which I also purchased from them. RE: [Elecraft] Solar Panels
I'm interested in using solar panels to power the K2 for emergency/field day operations and am wondering what sort of experience others have had. I have had very positive results using a solar panel, Douglas. I also have a K2 and a solar panel with rechargeable battery is my main power source for it. I am using a normal 7 AH sealed lead acid battery which resides in the shack. I have a 10W solar panel. It is a very nice high quality unit made by BP which I bought over the internet for about $125. This matches up nicely with the 7AH battery and the K2 current draw. I use a Don Brown charge controller which I built from one of his kits. I can highly recommend this also (no connection to either). If you search the Elecraft reflector for Don Brown and/or Charge controller you should come up with info about ordering the kit - as I recall it was only about $25. It will allow charging from either a modest size solar panel or from a power supply. The solar panel puts out about 650 mA in full sun which is about the desired upper limit of the charge rate for this sized battery. The wiring between the panel and the battery is non-critical - I use AWG18 - since the current is limited and you don't care about voltage drop since the open circuit output voltage of the panel is over 16V. I used this setup on Field Day this year but with the K2 turned down to 5W. The battery kept me going all night and the solar panel took over and refreshed things on Sunday. The setup does work - even for contests. RE: [Elecraft] K2 Filter and BFO Settings Question
Steve, That is a normal result of an inadequate BFO range - go back to page 62 in the manual and recheck the range. BTW, my manual shows that the LSB BFO is to be set at 4913.7 rather than your stated 4912.7. RE: [Elecraft] Additional Info on Problem
This was covered in a post on the reflector a couple days ago - a small padder capacitor from the junction of X3, X4 and C174 to ground may solve your BFO low frequency problem. Use 1 or 2 pf and recheck both ends of the BFO range after adding it. Normally 4912.86 can be low enough except in extreme cases - note that the LSB BFO is set at 4913.7 which is well within your currently available BFO range. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, July 03, 2006 1:30 PM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Additional Info on Problem On double checking the BFO Test (pg 62 of manual) the BFO Low Freq. is too high. Re: [Elecraft] Experience with off brand Lithium AAs?
I have had all three leading consumer brands of alkaline batteries leak, and several of the industrial size we use at work. The enemies of all alkaline cells are heat and moisture, and time. A number of all types of alkaline cells have reversed polarity in a string of series cells, usually of AA size. Keeping your portable dry cell powered gear in an insulated beer cooler, or similar protection while in the hot car, or outdoors may prolong the battery life. Expensive things like antenna analyzers require one to proactively check the cells from time to time, and take them out if not using the equipment for a prolonged period. RE: [Elecraft] K2 ALC problem on 40m
Jeorg, Yes, I would first look carefully at the AGC section for unsoldered components and incorrectly placed components. Let the schematic be your guide in identifying the components involved. The BC signals can take over the receiver IF and cause strange results. I recommend that you check the AGC action on a band other than 40 meters - if it is OK on other bands, then you should look at changing the 40 meter bandpass filter to provide a more narrow response on 40 meters. There is a 'European' mod to the 40 meter bandpass that may help you - it is an application note at the Elecraft website, look for it at http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/eu_40_meter_narrow_bandpass_filt.htm 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- i would like to decribe a problem I am faced with my K2. I tried to adjust R1 to get the same level. In my case I got the same level if R1 is set to the minimum value. If I do so it looks like the RF- Gain pot has no effect anymore. I assume this is not the intention. I turned it back to the recommended value to get 3.8 volts now. Any comments where I can investigate are welcome. 73 de Joerg (DL3QQ) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Solar Panels
I just got a copy of the ARRL book Emergency Power and I am impressed! That stuff may be old hat to some of you, but I'm a real noob at this and it looks very good for getting up to speed. Lots of basic stuff like Don't let shadows fall across your panel and more advanced stuff like charge controller theory and schematics. Let me get my k1 done then I may well build or at least buy a no- frills K2. 73 de Alex NS6Y. Just want to add a testimonial for Don's solar charge controller kits. We used one at Field Day to run a 12 A-hr battery (RS Jump Starter) with a 15 watt panel for the K2, and also with a set of three 15 watt panels and a 100 A-hr marine battery to run the inverter for the logging computer - gotta figure out a better, more QRP friendly logger - maybe cellulose fiber graphic panels coupled with a manually vectored graphite character generator - I'm told they support the full ASCII set and have integrated error correction. Anyway, Don's kit are great - good parts, good boards, and good instructions, at a good price... ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 5613 Lives
Congrats Raj. Hopefully, I'll be in the same position with #5644 here in the next few weeks (finished first alignment yesterday). 73, -Mike N8YO Rajiv Dewan, N2RD wrote: Just wanted to report that K2 #5613 lives. [Elecraft] Happy Birthday to the United States of America
I would like to wish our country Happy Birthday. We've pushed and prodded our poor Constitution but it still is a proud document. Another two hundred years would be a nice gift to the folks who founded our nation so long ago. Happy Birthday to the home of my parents, their parents, and to those who welcomed their parents to its shore. Kevin. [Elecraft] KX1 #1499 is on the air
KX1 #1499 presented no problems. I got this zen-of-elecraft thing down now so I know to look in the serial number envelope for the thermal pad, which saves a lot of frantic searching. (Of course the parts list says it's there, but I don't always read that.) :-) I initially had no output on transmit but realized my error in skipping the step where you turn R4 fully clockwise. Duh. FWIW my paddle kit had stranded wire rather than solid wire. Kinda tough making those tight little connections with stranded wire but no problem finding a couple inches of solid #24 to use in its place. KD6LM fought the QRM to give me a 229 report and my first QSO on the KX1. So the shack is full of Elecraft gear now. K2/100 #4941, K1 #1966, and now KX1 #1499. That's a lot of radios for a guy who works Field Day and Sweepstakes and little else. They're just so darn much fun to build. :-) Craig NZ0R ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr.
