[Elecraft] K1EL's WK-USB keyer supports Ultimatic mode

2006-07-17 Thread Frederick Dwight
I just built the new WK-USB keyer from K1EL. It can be use with a computer USB
port, or in stand alone mode. It operates in Iambic A, B, Bug, or Ultimatic
modes. I have not tried Ultimatic keying for 10 years, but was able to send OK
with it after a few minutes of practice. I would think that either the
Ultimatic mode with dual paddles or a single lever paddle with an iambic keyer
would be equally easy to master. Now that I have learned iambic keying, I will
stick with that mode myself. Hope this gives another option to anyone who
finds iambic keying frustrating.

[Elecraft] N-Gen Output - Thanks

2006-07-17 Thread kbgluxford

Hi Guys,

Thank you very much for your illuminating assistance with N-Gen output.
I think that I now understand the principles which I had forgotten after
40 years. Or, perhaps that was a question in the exam that I took a
punt on not getting! It is amazing how the sins of our youth come back
to haunt. My only excuse is that now that I am retired, I am getting
back to refresh my understanding without the pressure of forthcoming
examinations.

RE: [Elecraft] Amp keying circuit K2

2006-07-17 Thread David Douglass
Hi All,

Thanks for all the responses to this - much appreciated.

I'm afraid it was a simple case of me not reading the instructions on the
keying circuit.

The FL-2100B pulls 20v on its keying input, whilst the circuit for the K2 is
only designed for 5-12v !! This is clearly written on the instructions with
the circuit, which I neglected to read.

Does anyone have details of a simple circuit I can build, so I can use this
with my FL-2100B ??

Again, many thanks for the all the replies !!

Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Amp keying circuit K2

David,

No question is quick if you need to understand what is going on !

The amp keying circuit should work unless the output transistor is being
forced into conduction from whatever voltage is being applied on its open
collector - it should not be if the voltages applied are within a normal
range.

Without the amp connected, you can check the base voltage of the 2N
transistor - it should be very close 0 volts during receive and about 0.7
volts (the emitter/base junction voltage for the 2N) during transmit.
If those two conditions are not true, then you have something wrong with the
keying circuit wiring.

During receive, the 2N should be cutoff due to the low voltage at its
base and should not conduct even with voltage applied to the collector. Be
certain the resistance in the emitter path is quite low - a bit of
resistance there could cause the output transistor to misbehave.

If your problem still is not solved, try measuring the circuit output
transistor voltages (to K2 ground) with the amp connected and the K2 in
receive. The emitter should be zero volts, and the base should also be very
low, while the collector should measure at the voltage applied externally
from the amp. Be certain you have a good low resistance connection from the
amp ground (terminal E) to the K2 ground and a good connection from the amps
RY terminal to the keying circuit's output collector.

If you find the conditions above are OK, you likely have a bad 2N.

Re: [Elecraft] Re: [WriteLog] K2/XV with Writelog

2006-07-17 Thread Jack Brindle
We know that the K2 works with Writelog in all sorts of serial
interfaces, including USB serial adapters. I would wonder if the PCI
serial port is somehow expecting handshake signals which the K2
doesn't have (and presumably you do not have connected). If the port
is looking for an input handshake that never occurs, it will tend not
to work. You might look at the connector to see how RTS/CTS and DSR/
DTR are connected - they may need to be looped back for that card.
Also check the serial port docs to see what it really needs.

Good luck!

Could something in my KIO2 be busted? Or is it a design issue?
Why shouldn't K2 work with all logging programs if hooked up

Re: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminator

2006-07-17 Thread Rob Locher W7GH

Hi Bill,

Welcome to the list! I added the Rework Eliminator boards to my K2, and
I'm happy I did. I would recommend it to you for two reasons. First, you
will spare yourself from reworking your K2 when you add the accessories.
With the Rework Eliminators, to install an accessory board you just pull
out the un-module and plug in the accessory board. Second, should you
ever need to troubleshoot your K2, the Rework Eliminators make it very
easy to discover whether the problem lies with an accessory board.
Otherwise, should that happen you would be forced to rework your K2 just
to do that simple troubleshooting step.

The Rework Eliminator web site at http://www.unpcbs.com/ has all the
documentation you will need to make an informed decision. The diagram at
the very center of the User's Guide is very helpful for getting the basic
idea.

I agree with Don that you don't need the Upgrade Combo, which includes all
the headers and standoffs and such which come with the accessory boards.
Just get the "Missing PCB Parts" kits for the options you didn't buy.
That will also save you a good fraction of the expense.

If you do decide to go with the Rework Eliminators, make sure that you
read the Companion Guide before you start building the K2.

The Usual Disclaimer applies -- I have no financial connection to Ken and
Gary other than being a satisfied customer.

RE: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminator

2006-07-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
Bill,

Since you will have the headers required for most of the options, you could
get the boards and the on-board parts. The headers that you would not have
are for the KAF2/KDSP2 and the KNB2, and you could order those headers (and
the KNB2 standoff) separately. You will need a 2.7k resistor on the RF
board for the KNB2 RF Board changes. The Rework Eliminator instructions
will tell you how to proceed, but you will have most of the parts in the K2
option packages.

I do not believe purchasing the entire kit with all headers and hardware
would be wise if you have ordered the K2 options.

RE: [Elecraft] Re: [WriteLog] K2/XV with Writelog

2006-07-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
Raj,

It could be a timing problem created by the way your operating system
handles the PCI card ports as opposed to its handling of the native com
port. If you are using WinXP, something like that is entirely possible.

Nothing in your KIO2 is broken. The K2 operates with no handshaking, so
timing delays and latency caused by the operating system are the most likely
sources of the problems.

Hmmm ... that might be backwards? I haven't kept up with the rules, but
due to a scheduling error on my part, my Mom (the driver) and I arrived
at the FCC in Los Angeles about 3 hrs early (I was almost 16) for the
Extra exam. The examiner told me to fill out the app and take the 25

speed and we were all: 1) The Nerds at school; and 2) at a bit over 30
WPM). I sat for the written, nothing to lose, and passed ... exactly.

My Elmer got me a job as a relief op at a coastal marine station during
my senior year in HS, which was maybe the most fun job I've ever had
despite the fact that the OT's on my crew knocked the 16 yr old kid
around a lot. My 2nd telegraph finally lapsed as I was finishing
college. Maybe they've changed the morse requirements since then.

The Marine Radio Historical Society in San Francisco
has restored the old KPH site at Point Reyes and
Bolinas CA. They recently applied for and received the license KSM,
probably the first such license granted in maybe 20 years. On
Saturdays, from about noon to 1600 pacific time, they run their traffic
wheel on 6474 Kcs and handle a little traffic with mainly other
historical ships. They'll sometimes activate KPH on 425 KCs during this
time (and on Marconi Day), and often send press at about 20 WPM. MRHS
also holds the call K6KPH, and when they're operating, they guard 7050
KCs and 14050 Kcs for calls and handle traffic for station visitors.
They appreciate reception reports and will QSL on authentic Maritime
Radio Telegram forms.

Connection to Elecraft: I copy KSM on 6474 Kcs pretty well with my K2,

RE: [Elecraft] Amp keying circuit K2

2006-07-17 Thread Don Wilhelm

Don W3FPR

Re: [Elecraft] N-Gen Output

2006-07-17 Thread Robert Friess
The N-gen produces noise power that is approximately 35 dB greater than that
produced by a 50 ohm resistor. At room temperature a 50 ohm resistor
produces a noise power of -174dBm per Hertz of bandwidth. So in a typical
CW bandwidth of 500 Hz, the N-gen noise power output is
approximately -174+10log(500)+35= -112 dBm or 0.56 microvolt.

Hi guys,

I have built the Elecraft Noise Generator. The specs say that the noise
output is 35 dB.

Am I correct in assuming that 0 dB corresponds to 1 microvolt, so that an
output of 35 dB corresponds roughly to 56 microvolts?

If this is so, it would explain why I can not see the output on my
oscilloscope.

hi - perhaps one of these ideas will be helpful - I have used the K2+XV50 with
writelog with no problem, so I would not think it is likely a software bug
(unless it got broken in a later revision, still unlikely):

- is the rig frequency changing or just what writelog displays? I would assume
the latter - it sure sounds like random data coming in.

- does it also do this without the XV hooked up?

- make sure you are selecting "Elecraft K2" in the Ports... setup.

- make sure you don't have any other activity also programmed for that COM port
(CW etc.)

- I don't know this to be true, but perhaps N1MM and writelog do have
differences (timing etc.) in the way that they make use of the port - I would
still double check your cable assembly and make sure it is wired correctly for
the K2 to rig and there are no shorts etc.

Hope one of the above ideas helps lead to a solution! - j

RE: [Elecraft] N-Gen Output

2006-07-17 Thread Masleid, Michael A.
Hi Stewart and Kevin

Calculation for white noise are a bit tricky - here goes:

The power output is specified as Excess Noise Ratio.
This is how much more power the N-gen produces compared to
a 50 ohm resistor at a temperature of 290 Kelvin.
How much power that is depends on bandwidth.
If you double the bandwidth, you get twice as much noise power.
The equation is Pn=kTB. So, at 2300 Hz bandwidth, at 290 K,
we get 1.38x10(-23)*2300*290=9.2x10(-18) watts out of a 50 ohm
resistor. Since we're 35 dB above that, we've got a power out of
9.2x10(-18)x3162=2.9x10(-14) watts. Since this is a 50 ohm source,
voltage output is only about 1.2 micro volts. Of course, this is in RMS.
Now, the oscilloscope bandwidth is going to be much larger, let's say
50 MHz. So the noise bandwidth increase by 5000/2300, which
in dB is 43 dB. So voltage will look higher on the scope, by the square
root of that, or about 137 microvolts. Again, this is RMS, but not like
for a sine wave. You should often see peak values up around 0.4 millivolts
in a very random fashion. Might be a bit hard to catch unless you
have a delayed sweep circuit and a fast sweep rate.

In Pdn, the tip is dit, ring is dah, body is ground.

Unfortunately, it appears that the KX1 doesn't have the K2s auto-detect
feature, where you can wire a straight key to a stereo plug, with both
tip and ring closing the contact, and the radio figures out that you've
plugged in a SK without changing the mode... so you'll want to
wire tip and ground for the SK and change to Hdn mode.

This is hinted at on page 44 (45th page in the PDF), and a bit more
clearly on page 65 (66th page in the PDF).

RE: [Elecraft] K2/XV with Writelog

2006-07-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
Raj,

That certainly sounds like a Writelog problem. If the K2 works properly
with another program, then there is nothing wrong with the K2 interface or
your connections - that leaves only the driving software and a small chance
that the sequence of commands is creating an unexpected path somewhere in
the K2 firmware.

There are methods of polling that are known not to work properly for all
combinations. As an example, the polling done by the N4PY rig control
software causes problems if the KRC2ACC is incorporated into the setup - the
N4PY software works FB without the KRC2ACC included, and works nicely with
the KRC2 (only the 'ACC' versions gives problems). So far, Carl has not
been willing to change his software to avoid the problem.

RE: [Elecraft] What should the power output of the K2 be?

2006-07-17 Thread Don Wilhelm
Sam,

There is no one single answer to your question because it depends on the
particular meter's response and will differ from one meter to another.

The K2 bargraph peaks will usually indicate the peak power more readily than
a 'peak reading' analog power meter. The reason is that the bargraph
responds rapidly while the analog meter has mechanical mass to move and will
respond more slowly - 'damping factor' is the technical term. Most meters
simply add an RC network to provide conversion from average to peak, but
there are many dependencies on the accuracy of that conversion.

To really determine the PEP level, the best instrument is a 'scope. Connect
the 'scope (with a compensated 10X probe) across the load. Then transmit CW
at the power level you wish to set the SSB PEP value at and note how far it
deflects on the 'scope. Now transmit with SSB and make the peaks equal to
the deflection level you observed with the CW signal. Once you have
determined the real PEP value for a certain power level, you can connect
your external power meter and see how far your voice deflects the meter with
that power level.

With CW, the Average Power and the Peak Envelope Power are equal, but with
SSB, the average power will be considerably less than the PEP - how much
less depends on the voice, the amount of copression, etc. In any case, a 5
watt CW signal will contain considerably more power than a 5 watt SSB
signal.

Re: [Elecraft] N-Gen Output

2006-07-17 Thread Stewart Baker
Hi Kevin,

If your calculations are right ( and I have not checked them) then 56 uV would
be very difficult, if not impossible to see on the average oscilloscope.

On most oscilloscopes the maximum Y axis sensitivity is 1 to 5mV/cm, so you
are
trying to measure something approx 100 times smaller.

Re: [Elecraft] What should the power output of the K2 be?

peaks on SSB. That's normal. The external meter is showing the average
output, not the peak.

This has always been a confusion factor for me.
So with an external meter,
running CW you should have it's scale set to peak or average?

And if you use the same meter on SSB
and do the long 'hello' thing,
which setting gives you the more accurate
(in relation to setting the output to say 10w) reading for a contest?

[Elecraft] N-Gen Output

2006-07-17 Thread kbgluxford

Hi guys,

I have built the Elecraft Noise Generator. The specs say that the noise
output is 35 dB.

Am I correct in assuming that 0 dB corresponds to 1 microvolt, so that
an output of 35 dB corresponds roughly to 56 microvolts?

If this is so, it would explain why I can not see the output on my
oscilloscope.

Many thanks in advance, and 73

[Elecraft] K2 VCO ... Who's a silly-billy?

2006-07-17 Thread Mark RAYBOULD
I misread 80M as a 7MHz (40M Band) Frequency and then set the VFO for
4000kHz. Silly-me! Everything is well within specification and
construction is progressing.

Hi,

I am building my second K2. First K2 no challenges at all but with this
one I am falling down at the first major hurdle.
Freq 10482.69 and should be between 8 to 10 MHz.

Trouble shooting no help.
VCO alignment - DMM reads 0.02V at R30 (should be 6V). Any pointers
much appreciated.

[Elecraft] Amp keying circuit K2

2006-07-17 Thread David Douglass
Hi,

Just a quick question..

I've just installed the parts in my basic K2 to externally key an amp. I've
just tried to key my old FL-2100B with this, but have found that as soon as
I plug the cable in, the amp keys when the radio is still in RX ??

Is there a menu setting I need to change or have I made a mistake on the
circuit ?? The cable is fine as I use this on my FT1000mp to key the same
amp.

I've checked the resistance on the keying circuit and I get about 18ohms,
when the radio is keyed, as opposed to open circuit when in the RX state ??

Thanks

David, VK2NU
