[Elecraft] New KX1 alive and well

2006-09-18 Thread K6MR
KX1 # 1593 is alive and kicking. This is a loaded version, and thanks to
perfectly clear documentation I managed to put both the tuner and the 30/80
board in during the basic construction. Everything went together just fine,
though I must admit I was wondering at times if it would all fit.

I'm in the middle of house renovation, so setting up the full station of K2s
and such is out of the question for a while. I've never tried qrp with
random antennas before, so we'll see how it goes.

These are the result of mixing products of harmonics of the 18 MHz bias
oscillator in the KPA100 and those of some other oscillator in the K2.
There were some suggestions which may or may not help to reduce the
strength of these spurs on the N0SS website, but I can't seem to find
them. I did reduce the strength of some of my birdies by beefing up the
bypassing of the bias oscillator output, both on the RS232 and PIN diode
sides, but was not successful in eliminating them altogether.

By the way, unplugging the RS232 cable probably doesn't make the birdie
go away; it just changes the frequency a bit!

[Elecraft] September NAQCC Sprint - Hail Canada!

2006-09-18 Thread Larry Makoski W2LJ
This Wednesday evening (Thursday morning UTC time) will be the NAQCC
Sprint for September.

This month, the Sprint will be held on 80, 40 and 20 meters. This month,
a special certificate will be given to the operator who has the most
QSOs with VE (Canadian) stations - Canada being a huge part of North
America and thus, a hugely valuable part of the NAQCC. The Sprint will
run from 8:30 to 10:30 PM EDT, 7:30 to 9:30 PM CDT, 6:30 to 8:30 PM MDT
and 5:30 to 7:30 PM PDT or from 0030 to 0230 UTC on the morning of
August 9th. The recommended frequencies are:

80M - 3555-3565 kHz (Be courteous to FISTS operating on 3558 kHz)
40M - 7039-7050 kHz (Avoid W1AW on 7047.5 kHz)
20M - 14059-14065 kHz.

The exchange is as follows:
RST - SPC (State Province or Country) - NAQCC Nr.
(non-Members send power level in place of NAQCC Nr., e.g. 5W, 1W, etc.
Be sure to add the W.)

Remember to mention the type of antenna you have used when submitting
your log as there will be two separate categories - simple wire antennas
and gain antennas, such as yagis, quads and periodics.

Also, remember the bonus multipliers that you get for using either a
straight key or bug during the event. All entries must be postmarked or
email dated before 2400Z on September 27, 2006.

For full details, please visit
http://www.arm-tek.net/~yoel/sprint200609.html

And to join the NAQCC (if you haven't already!) please go to

RE: [Elecraft] filter settings and hearing

2006-09-18 Thread Don Wilhelm
John,

Not an odd question at all:

Certainly it is possible (and desirable) to center the CW filters at your
chosen sidetone pitch.
Adjust the BFO frequencies to do just that. Spectrogram is the tool of
choice for most folks to adjust the passband positioning. If you have not
used it before, I refer you to the info on my website
http://w3fpr.qrpradio.com in the K2 dial calibration article, and also to
the information that Tom Hammond has on his website www.n0ss.net . Yes it
is a straightforward procedure - do not be intimidated by the number of
words used to tell folks how to do it - just follow the steps one time
through and you will be a pro.

Re: [Elecraft] filter settings and hearing

2006-09-18 Thread David A. Belsley
Yes, John, both the variable filters and the DSP filters may be
adjusted for center frequency. However, while we older folk may lose
our abilities to hear, say, above 4000 Hz, there is not likely to be
a significant loss differential in the range for typical side tones,
say 550-1000 Hz. This is, after all, roughly in the octave range of
C'-C'' on the piano, and isn't really all that high.

best wishes,

Michael,

While the order does not matter if you follow the KXB3080 instructions 'to
the letter', be aware that there are some close clearances between the tuner
parts and the low pass filter board on the KXB3080. This situation requires
that the Low Pass Filter board be positioned 'just so' - yes, the
instructions call things out perfectly, but it is easier to detect
mispositioning of the LPF board if you have the tuner built and do a trial
installation as the KXB3080 instructions call out.

Build the tuner first just because there is less chance of error when you
build the KXB3080.

This is high density construction, so work carefully.

Michael,

I think it would also be easier to build and install the ATU first and make
sure that is working, then you can trouble shoot. I am prejudiced because I
was a tester from the start on the original and the updates. Watch the
tolerances and take your time. This is not difficult if you take your time.
You can screw it up no matter what your experience, but it is easy to fix.

N6KR and Eric, WA6HHQ are our featured guest speakers this year.

The title of their segment will be, " Ultra-Portable HFpacking with

our first "KX1 Pow-Wow",which features live "in the room" QSO's with
Pedestrian mobile KX1's. We will be using amplified speakers and extra

wireless PA mics so everyone can hear the CW. Also, an Open discussion
forum combined with a Powerpoint presentation of HFpackers using their
KX1's wraps up the Pow-Wow.
Real users will discuss the following topics:

1) Is building the KX1 easy? How long does it take?

2) How does one pack the KX1 when portable or Pedestrian Mobile?

For the "in the room" live QSO's, we are designing a broadband wire
loop for 20M coupled with a ferrite transformer to a BNC

male connector. This loop was recently tested at a NorCal Meeting
with good results. The compact loop should be efficient enough to
work throughout the Marriott hotel, and is easy for the internal
antenna tuner to match. Our goal is to use the KX1's like handheld
HT's during the convention for fun.
KX1 owners, and newbies should attend our forum to see Wayne and Eric
speak, and to participate in the discussion. Bring your KX1's and toss
a wire into the trees during our HFpack Zombie

Walk in the Marriott Parking lot. We operate Pedestrian Mobile HF
around 10PM on Saturday, and had worked many stations on 40M running
only 5 watts. Last year we worked stations 900 miles away. Some
HFpackers may be using their KX1's Pedestrian mobile with backpack
mounted antennas.
At the end of the entire forum, we will be conducting a Door Prize

Raffle with donations from Elecraft, LDG, SuperAntennas, Buddipole
Antennas, HFprojects kits, Doug Hendrick's kits, and Norcal. All we
ask is that you must be PRESENT to WIN during the raffle.

So if you are interested in buying an Elecraft KX1, or wish to see
what others are doing when portable, or Pedestrian Mobile, the "HFpack
Technology" Forum is not to be missed.

I currently have the bare bones KX1. I also have but have not
built/installed the 3080 kit.

I'm planning on getting/building/installing the ATU.

Question:

Does it matter what order these are done? Should one be done before the
other?

Re: [Elecraft] E-mail problems with the Mailman system

2006-09-18 Thread Ron Polityka

Hello,

Happy Dance

I was going through Elecraft withdrawals.

I sent an e-mail last night to my ISP provider like many of the Great
QRP'ers on the list said to do.

Less than 19 hours later all is well and running. I now receive all e-mails.

72 and Thanks,
Ron Polityka

[Elecraft] Re: Aspiring ham!

2006-09-18 Thread Justin Croonenberghs

Wow! I can see I made a wise choise in Ham, with so many friendly
people responding! I've got an avalanche of email to get through to
thank you all for your advice...I hope I don't forget any. If I do,
sorry! TOO MUCH EMAIL!

At least it's not spam.

I think I will probably build a K1 after the K2, because I'm really
digging this Morse thing. I sat down with a Morse training program and
learned 4 letters this afternoon at 15WPM, so I'm feeling cocky and
stuff. That, and kits are fun.

Anyway, gotta get back to work. Thanks again!

Hey all! I just purchased a kit and options on the recommendation of a
good friend, and I am just now getting into radio. My plans are:

1. Build my new radio and options
2. Finish studying Morse and stuff to get my license
3. Start operating!

Problem is, I am currently stationed in Afghanistan, which makes this
a little complicated. My question is: since I have lots of time to
study here, can I take more then one test element and skip a license
class or two? Meaning, can I go straight to General, or do I need to
get Technician first?

My other question is: since I purchased a "loaded" radio with all the
options in a 20W configuration, is there a recommended sequence of
assembly?

Anything anyone can tell me would be greatly appreciated! When I take
over the world, you shall be granted a fiefdom in your name. Good
deal, yes?

:-)
