[Elecraft] Looking for an old version of Spectragram
Not because it was freeware, but because it worked with my old computer in my shack (Win98SE and an old SB AWE64 card). It appears version 14 does not. Anyone have one (an old install)? [Elecraft] K1 -- VW Solar Panel -- Controller Help
Hello folks, Have a new 2.3SLA battery I'm trying to charge for the K1. Here the problem I'm having. The battery started out at about 9.6V and is now at 12.10V or so after charging for several days on and off. The VW panel reads about 20V in full sun. When connected to Don Brown's low power controller, it drops to 12.75V (full sun). I have a few panels and tried them allsame results. Even paralleled two. The controller will cut-off around 14.0V. Needless to say, this one will never make it to cut-off. I'm wondering if there is a problem with the controller. Don says the panel connection point at the controller should read about 15V. I don't have a current limiting supply to test the controller the way the instruction sheet suggests. Any thoughts appreciated, ThanksKen...W2GIW ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] Looking for an old version of Spectragram
Bill, You can download version 5 from Tom Hammond's website www.n0ss.net . If that does not work, I have a file on my computer here that I can email to you - a reply off-reflector will get it to you. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Not because it was freeware, but because it worked with my old computer in my shack (Win98SE and an old SB AWE64 card). What you describe is an effective, easily transported antenna. You can't get much simpler than this. de Joe, aa4nn All in all, I still prefer the twinlead-center-fed 40m inverted vee, BL1 balun (4 to 1), and the Jackite 28' pole for portable operation. 72, John W2XS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: Unstable AGC
This is a follow up to my prior posting about the AGC cutting power back to less than a watt in continuous modes like PSK31. Thanks, folks, for the advice several of you sent. No, I don't believe it's RF--for one thing, I rather doubt a few watts can louse up the system, when 100 watts on the Yaesu (switched in and out by two simple changes to the Rigblaster connections) are RF cold in the system. I can't tell what starts the AGC aggressively knocking down the power, except I think I can induce the problem by overdriving. Then, I can't fix it until the K2 is off for a while or I fiddle with it in an unrepeatable pattern. Perhaps, still, it is a heat problem. At full steam, when the K2 is running right, it idles in PSK31 at about 3 watts. Text transmission kicks it to 5 watts, and the steady tone at the end of transmission kicks it momentarily to 7 watts. This seems to be the norm for proper 5 watt operation, and IMD is minimal, according to reports. And, I think the K2 will run this way without the annoying cut back so long as I make sure the AGC light remains off entirely (i.e. no bar even flickers in AGC meter mode). However, there is something in the AGC which, once set by slight overdrive, won't return to normal unless the rig is off, or the radio is played with by making band/power/freq/input changes of various kinds. It is puzzling. Note, I only do digital modes on 20 meters, where the beam is either very low SWR or the LDG automatic antenna tuner kicks in and brings the SWR down to 1:1 as seen by the K2. Anyway, I have rediscovered the hardiness of the old Yaesu 757 GX, whose specs allowed for continuous operation in high duty cycle modes. And these days, with sunspots in the zero range, PSK31 is much more fun at 75 watts than at 5 watts--and this from a confirmed QRPer. So, I reconnected the desk mike to the K2 (and the keyer, of course). Thanks again for the suggestions--anybody else experiencing something similar? Re: [Elecraft] SSB Overshoot
Yes indeed. One should not depend on ALC to set output power. Jack Don Wilhelm wrote: Jack, Those displays look quite similar to what I would have expected - overshoot will occur if the audio is increased sufficiently to activate the ALC. The displays do point out the necessity of not driving the K2 into ALC if overshoot is to be avoided - for digital modes, that means to increase the requested power to well above the intended operating power and limit the drive using the mic input level. Of course, the same thing applies to most any other transceiver if the IMD is to be kept at a minimum - the thing unique about the K2 is that the control of the power output level is also involved. I always have bad feelings about attempts to use ALC as a power output limit - expecially on SSB because it only leads to distortion. It is a form of compression, but audio compression is much better at increasing the average power of a signal. One could design a compressor that works at RF, but it would be quite different than the ALC found in most transceivers. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I've made a quick series of measurements at 7 MHz, 50 watts output and varying audio drive levels and posted the result in a PDF file that may be viewed at http://www.cliftonlaboratories.com/Documents/SSB%20Burst%20Analysi s%20Elecraft%20K2.pdf Jack K8ZOA K2: 5689 www.cliftonlaboratories.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] kpa100 with kat100-2
I see some hams have combined the KPA100 with the KAT100-2 in a separate case. Is Elecraft planning on modifying these kits so they can be assembled into a case separate from the K2 without modifications? I love my K2 with all of its features, including the internal battery. It would be real handy to plug the radio into one module and have the KPA100 with the KAT100-2 available in the shack, while keeping the battery powered K2 for portable work. I am a little shy about applying someone else's modifications to my rig. If Elecraft is not planning on offering these kits in this form, is there someone's modifications that you would recommend? RE: [Elecraft] KAT2
RC, Re-do the power and SWR calibration, and then try it into a 50 ohm dummy load. Tell us what you find. I know that is not an answer to your total problem, but there has to be a starting point, so verify that calibration first and we can go from there. In case you cannot achieve a good calibration, it may be that there is a relay that is not operating - usually due to an unsoldered relay pin. I know it is difficult to check those pins because they are under the inductors and capacitors, but it may just have to be done - we will see after you re-do the calibrations. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Hi gang Having just finished building a KAT2 for K2 #5804 and I'm at the point of doing the checkout and calibration prior buttoning it up. RE: [Elecraft] kpa100 with kat100-2
Dave, While full instructions are not available from Elecraft, it is a simple matter to put the KPA100 and the KAT100 into an EC2 enclosure. The KAT100-2 has all the 'hooks' required to plug the KPA100 into the KAT100 board. There are no mods required to mount the current KPA100 externally - the mods that you read about apply only to the initial KPA100 design, so if yours has been upgraded (if R23 and L18 are jumpers, you have the upgrade installed - the new kits have th upgrade integrated), all you need to do is plug it in once you complete the KAT100-2. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I see some hams have combined the KPA100 with the KAT100-2 in a separate case.
