Re: [Elecraft] New Elecraft Amp(s) - with bare K2?
The amplification of the PA is limited by the low only in the USA. Hope that there will be an overseas edition, who can be made happy by barefoot K2. 73 Val LZ1VB Hi Fred, I fully appreciate the quality of Elecraft products. However, they still need to have a marketable amplifier. In other words, to cover their RD, they should aim at selling the amplifier not only to the K2 users. My barefoot K2 can drive both my ICPW-1 and Quadra System to 350-400 watts. Therefore, the forthcoming KPA800 / 1500 should have similar amplification gain. If the proposed KPA800 / 1500 can only work with K2/100 and with less gain, I regret to say that the marketability of the amplifiers will be adversely affected. ICPW-1 and Quadra System are selling about US$4000 in VR2. I would expect KPA800 /1500 selling at similar price. For the price range, if the KPA800 / 1600 only can work with K2/100 and less amplification gain, it is really not a market taker. 73 Johnny Siu VR2XMC From: Fred (FL) [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] New Elecraft Amp(s) - with bare K2? RE: [Elecraft] Other benefits of installing K60XV
Group: How about adding an extra pre-drive stage with automatic gain which takes anywhere from 5-50W and drives it to the level needed for full (800 resp. 1800W) output? That's how some of the other amps seem to do it. If you feed it 5W, the pre-drive stage does its 10dB thing first. If you feed it 25W, etc etc. up to the point where you feed it 50-100W, where it doesn't do any pre-drive at all, possibly even some level of 'input overdrive' shutdown protection. I'd like a KPA1800 for use with my K2/100, but being able to use it with my bare K2/15, as well as with e.g. my FT817 would kick ass. One good amp serves all, and I'd prefer it to be an Elecraft ! Given the cost of RD and the sheer desire to actually make money on things, Elecraft should think (or perhaps re-think) their design into a market position where they can grab a big load of sales, not just K2/100 owners... Mike, I'm sure Don and Ken are steering you right. Visual inspection of the thermistor board may not be enough. I had a problem there myself, signed off on it as good several times and went looking elsewhere for the problem. Finnally, after quit a bit of disassembly, I reflowed what looked like a good solder joint and my K2 took off playing just like it should. Re: [Elecraft] New Elecraft Amp(s) - with bare K2?
A power gain of x40 is very high for a mass produced RF ham amplifier (about 17db). I believe an FCC rule limits it to 15 or 16db for US marketability, due to CB issues in part. Many non-US amateur amp developers work around this by using power swamping resistors in the input circuits, of the US market amps they make, to comply with the FCC requirements. Just take a look at what the Italian amp maker Expert has had to do with its new solid state 1Kamp, just to get it approved by the FCC (60 watts inputfor the US version, 20 watts for the rest). The limiting factor is the need for neutrlisation in a high gain RF amp. Something to stay well away from, and at 17db you're pushing the envelope quite close. Just take a look at the 'export' versions of the QRO and Command amps - x35 power gain - and that's just for the overseas market. A higher gain amp can be built and made to work without neutralisation, but may be difficult to reproduce for mass use. Happiness is around 13db or x20 in my view. 73, Wyn VR2AX So you put 10 watts in and get ~400 watts out! RE: [Elecraft] K2 Tuning problem
That says that you have a problem with either the thermistor board (your previous email indicted thatyou did not), or in the path from the U6 pin 1 output to the varistors. Check the soldering on R19 and those components that are near it (check the schematic to find the other connected components). 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Don Wilhelm wrote: Mike, OK, it appears as though the output and input of U6A is correct (at least at the extreme ends). If your PLL range was correct (recheck frequencies at TP3), then CAL PLL should run fine. When CAL PLL starts, the frequency displayed should be near 12100 kHz and count downward from there - the process takes about 8 minutes. Frequency displayed initially is OK, but it doesn't really change at all. U6p3 decreases steadily (as it should) but p1 is fixed at about 8 VDC. -- Immanuel Kant but Kubla Khan. 73, Mike KCØTQX -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. RE: [Elecraft] LO BATT
Don, Guess I better check my setup. I definitely was using an external supply, got the LO BATT message, and verified that my power supply was way under requried voltage level. I guess from your note that I may have the switch in the wrong position. Tom Quoting Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Manuel, Strange LO BATT messages usually occur if the jumper on Control Board P7 is set to the EXT position. It should be set to the INT position for correct readings of the internal K2 voltage and current. Those with older K2s may remember this well, there was a switch that was easily bumped into the wrong position instead of the jumper in the post SN 3000 K2s. If your switch IS in the correct position, check your power supply wire and its connections to see where the voltage is dropping significantly. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Hello Elecrafters! I have just finished building my new KAT100 and the XG2 . They both work very well indeed. I am using a K2/100 (serial 5310) with a regular power supply off 220 volts and, occasionally, in the middle of my CW transmissions, the Lo Batt message pops up on the display (beep included). The K2 carrys on keying. I thought this would only appear if you were using a battery of some kind with low voltage delivery. Could this be an indication that my power supply is developing a problem? -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. I'm curious as well. The last official information we had indicated an ETA in the middle of January. I'm sure that everyone at Elecraft would like nothing more than to be shipping these rigs right now -- considering how long these projects have been in development. My guess is that the FCC certification is taking forever. Perhaps it didn't help that some of the rules changed back in December (although it should have made that process easier). So, the answer your last question -- they'll be available when the certification is complete. When that actually occurs is anyone's guess. [Elecraft] PBMME March 2007
Hello, 3 March 2007 will be the last outing for the Polar Bear Moonlight Madness Event for the season during the Full Worm Moon. The weather will be warming and the Polar Bear will be in hibernation. :-) You can find out who will be outdoors by visiting www.n3epa.org and click on the Polar Bear link. You will see March 2007 link which has the who, when, where and what rigs they will be using. Don't forget there is a Lunar Eclipse on 3 March 2007 which will start in the USA at the moonrise. The weather forecast in Eastern PA is rain and possible snow. I will be out starting around 19:00 UTC working towards my 800 QSO from the Appalachian Trail and taking some pictures for my presentation at the Atlanticon 2007 Forum. Hope to work you on the air this Saturday. 72 and Thanks, Ron Polityka WB3AAL Polar Bear #1 www.wb3aal.com www.n3epa.org/ K1 - SN 01011 K2 - SN 01392 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] KPA800 and KPA1500
My guess is that the FCC certification is taking forever. I don't know. I'm betting on the relative difficulty of firing up a major new assembly and kitting operation. I don't know what they have for facilities but I'm betting it's not much bigger than what is necessary to handle the current product line. I'm sure they haven't been paying for thousands of square feet more than they need. I also suspect that their complete silence, even though this thread has been going on for a few days now, is indicative that we're close. That's all just speculation. And anyway, all the amps in the world won't do me any good since my ice-laden antenna is currently draped over my roof. :-) Craig NZ0R K2/100 #4941 K1 #1966 KX1 #1499 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
