I *did* have a problem that was indicated by this; even though I thought I had carefully checked, I mixed up the 5 and 8 volt regulators. I've switched them over now, and apart from losing some of the through hole plating, it seems OK, with a couple of minor reservations. In the hope that it will help someone searching in the future, the symptoms, on powering up, were: - All the segments on the display showed to some extent from all angles and dominated the proper display when viewed from above the horizontal. - When the power supply voltage was above, approximately, the 8V regulator drop out, it kept sensing slight changes in the pots, so the display kept going to various parameter mode change displays. - The current draw, measured externally, was around 220mA. - Nothing on the control board seemed to be running warm, but there were indications that something on the front panel, near the centre, was, although not really hot. - The internal voltmeter, was showing about 5V when the external supply was turned down (I presume this is because it was using the the nominal 5V as the reference, which was actually just was close to the supply voltage, as the 8V regulator in the 5V supply had dropped out. - No segments lit on the bargraph. The slight reservations are that the AGC threshold calibration voltage only reaches 3.79, with R1 on the end stop and the current sense test showed 0.14 amps (0.08 to 0.22) difference most of the time, with the odd excursion to 0.16, compared with the manual figures of 0.16 to 0.18. -- David Woolley Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. Re: [Elecraft] K2: ext battery suggestions?
Hi The following taken from the instructions for my Solar Controller Kit may be helpful. I have also used a 35 amp hour electric wheelchair gel cell battery and 2 35 watt solar panels with my controller on field day to run a K2/100 at about 75 watts out. This allowed operation for the full duration of the field day (day and night) without using any external power. Don Brown KD5NDB Sizing Your Solar Charging System The solar panel and battery needs to be matched to your system requirements. Although there is a wide range of specifications that will work, there are certain limits that must not be exceeded or damage to your battery may occur or at least may shorten its life. The first requirement is the amount of power in amp/hours you will need to operate your equipment. This is simply the average ampere draw times the number of hours you want to operate the equipment. This number will be the size of battery you will need. You should add 15 to 25% to this number to have some reserve capacity. Next you need to determine the size of your solar panel. Solar panels are rated in watts or sometimes current. If it is rated in current multiply by 14 volts (the fully charged battery terminal voltage) to get watts. Unless your panel can track the sun as the earth rotates you will need to figure on only about 4 hours of charging time near the rated output of the panel with several hours at reduced output. To make the math easy let's use four hours of sun per day. Divide the battery capacity by four to get the charging current. To convert to watts multiply by 14 volts. This is the size panel you will need. You can use a larger panel but you must not exceed the maximum charging current of the battery. This is about 1/3 of the batteries amp hour capacity. Just make sure the charge current is not higher than this number. OK let's design a system for the Elecraft K2. Suppose you want to operate for 4 hours per day. The K2 draws 250 ma on receive and about 2.5 amps on transmit. Let's assume 75% of the time is receiving and 25% is transmitting. So .25 amps times 4 hours times .75 is 0.75 amp/hours for receive. When transmitting assume about a 50% duty cycle so 2.5 amps times 4 hours times 25 times .50 is 1.25 amp/hours. Add the receive requirement to the transmit requirement and we get 2.0 amp/hours. Add 25% for a reserve and we get 2.5 amp/hours. The internal battery option for the K2 has a 2.9 amp/hour battery so lets design for it, as it is a little larger than we need in the above example. 2.9 amp/hours divided by four hours is 0.73 amps for our charging current. Multiply by 14 to get watts and we get 10.2 watts. The maximum charge current for this battery is 2.9 amps divided by 3 or 0.97 amps times 14 volts is 13.5 watts. A 10 watt panel would be perfect for this application. You could probably use a 15 watt panel safely because most of the panels will not reach their rated output unless they are exactly perpendicular to the sun at high noon at a mid latitude. The panels should be mounted facing south at an angle equal to your latitude so they get direct exposure to the sun for the most hours. Solar Panels are constant current devices. Constant current devices seem a little strange because most of us are familiar with constant voltage devices like batteries and power supplies. A constant current device like a solar panel will supply the same current into any load up to its open circuit voltage as long as the load current is equal to or greater than the current supplied by the device. For instance if a solar panel is capable of supplying 1 amp of current it will supply that same one amp into a short circuit, a 6 volt battery or a 12 volt battery. The current supplied is determined by the size of the cells in the panel and the amount of light falling on the panel. Panels will supply 18 to 30 volts open circuit determined by the number of cells in series. This is the reason for a controller. Without one the panel would keep supplying the charging current as long as the panel is in the light possibly overcharging the battery shorting its life. - Original Message - From: J F [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Elecraft Discussion List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, June 03, 2007 6:20 AM Subject: [Elecraft] K2: ext battery suggestions? (Ah, vapor-ware has been with us for a LONG time.) Microsoft then quickly purchased the rights to a CP/M lookalike called QDOS. That became IBM's PC-DOS which Microsoft then renamed MS-DOS. The rest is history. That's the story I heard, too. Microsoft had to do some things to QDOS, particularly writing documentation and following up with later versions, but that's a far cry from developing an OS from the ground up. But for me, the early success of Microsoft was based on some smart business choices by Bill Gates friends, and by a court decision. The court decision was the one involving Franklin computers, (remember them?) which involved the 'clean room' method of reverse-engineering the IBM-PC's BIOS. The courts made it possible for true IBM-PC compatible clones to be made and sold legally. The smart business choice went like this, as I heard it: IBM did not buy exclusive rights to MS-DOS. Gates could sell DOS to anybody else who wanted it. If a company wanted DOS, they could buy it two ways: 1) Pay a certain fee per copy 2) Pay a fixed fee up front, and then a much lower fee per copy. But the buyer had to agree to include MS-DOS with every computer they made. Other OS's could be included as well, just so long as MS-DOS was part of the deal. The pricing was adjusted so that option 2) was by far the least expensive for the computer makers. This gave Microsoft big bucks upfront from the fixed fees, which was good. But even better, it caused millions of first-time computer buyers to adopt DOS as their default OS, simply because it came with the computer. 73 de Jim, N2EY ** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Spilling the HF beans .....
I can remember when I started writing in assembler for my IBMPC that came with PCDOS 1.0. The calls to the operating system were exactly like CP/M. All you had to do was load a memory address (I forget which one) with a value that defined the type of system you call you were making and then execute a CALL to address 0004 and away you went. PCDOS 2.0 change all of that. Re: [Elecraft] RE: Low output power on SSB after BW mod
Gregg, There should be no direct relationship between doing the bandwidth change and lowered SSB output. You may want to check for something that you inadvertently did. What are you using to measure the peak power output? What did this same instrument read before you installed the new capacitors? The best instrument I know of to check the peak power output is a 'scope. It can indicate the instantaneous RF voltage easily and it is easy to compare that level to a CW reference level. 'Peak indicating' wattmeters do have a time constant to indicate the peak and can be fooled by the audio waveform. In other words, they are not always correct when indicating the peak output of a SSB signal. Try increasing your compression to 3:1 or even 4:1 and see if that makes a difference. Lastly, put the K2 display in ALC and see if any bars illuminate on the right side of the bargraph - if even one bar lights, you are driving the K2 adequately with the mic. 73, Don W3FPR W6IZT wrote: Using an MH2 mic -Original Message- From: W6IZT [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Sunday, June 03, 2007 12:33 PM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Low output power on SSB after BW mod I just performed the 2.4 KHz bandwidth mod. Bill Gates has written lots of code. He is (or at least was) a truly outstanding programmer. Years ago he was known to review code, find something he didn't like and call up the programmer and give 'em hell. MS Programmers have also been known to suddenly receive bonuses as stock options because Bill liked their code. The very highest status a programmer could hope to achieve was having been recognized by Bill in this way. Also, PC-DOS has always been on the market. In fact you can still buy a copy (version 8.0). It has always been maintained separately from MS-DOS since its inception. A significant portion of PC-DOS was (and still is) strictly blue-code. Bill bought QDOS for $40,000 cash and some vague promises about further deals. Many, many companies have looked back at their dealings with Bill and realized they've been had. BigTime. So IBM turned to the small company that was supposed to provide the BASIC interpreter for the new PC: Microsoft. Bill Gates of Microsoft assured IBM that Microsoft had a replacement for CP/M-86 even though they really didn't. (Ah, vapor-ware has been with us for a LONG time.) Microsoft then quickly purchased the rights to a CP/M lookalike called QDOS. That became IBM's PC-DOS which Microsoft then renamed MS-DOS. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for June 3rd 4th, 2007
Good Evening, Two very good nets this evening. Twenty meters was less noisy than forty but that is to be expected with the seasonal changes. A few new folks checked in on forty. Thank you and welcome to the net! I know we missed a few stations who were beneath the noise on both nets. For that I am sorry. Hopefully next week will bring better propagation allowing us to greet you. The weather reports from across the land were heartening. Looks like the chills of winter are finally out of our bones. During the second net it was trying to reach 80 degrees F at my operating position. Just enough sweat to make my arm stick to the table but not enough to allow it to slide. That adds staccato to my sending :( I may need a towel under my arm soon. But, the ten day outlook shows showers and cool are in my future. Ah, Oregon weather! On the way to Seaside yesterday we got close to the coast before the fog dimmed the sky. On the way home it was even thicker but before we reached the crest of the Coast Range we broke through into sunshine which held over the Willamette Valley. Another week awaits us. Propagation can only get better barring the seasonal variations we must endure. I read an article in Sky Telescope last week about solar predictions. How very odd, there were two predictions cited; one was for the strongest solar cycle on record while the other stated this would be amoung the weakest ever. The only way we will know which prediction is correct is to keep getting on the air and testing conditions. Much like predicting Oregon weather :) I'll take my weather rock any day of the week over what the local weather folks have to say. I have heard a new twist though: tie the weather rock to a tree so you can tell wind speed and direction. However, that being stated I would have to have replaced last year's rock with a new one since the tree may not remain on my property let alone the rock!!! But, as they say, the only thing constant is change. May you live in interesting times said one fortune cookie :) Take care all and I will see you next week, 73, Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] dynamic range questions
Geoff, thank you very much for the response. I am posting to the list as others may find your comments helpful. Mike W5FTD Mike, A couple of comments before I crash - it is past 3 am here!! IMD for the K3 (Orion, FTxxx, etc) refers to spurious signals produced by operation of a stage (or stages) in the nonlinear portion of its transfer curve (or whatever it's called)? Yes, and the test result should specify which spurious products e.g. 3rd Order. The measurement ground rules imply two signals: one at fc and the other at fc+x, where x is 20khz, 10khz, ... ? This is where the numbers game starts! A proper test has both signals in the passband along with the products, but the great majority of commercial amateur receivers would not do too well. So with great reluctance on the part of ARRL the spacing x has been gradually decreased with both signals outside of the passband so that the product being measured is within the passband. The parameter usually being determined is referred to as the two tone dynamic range and indicates the point at which third order signals resulting from 2fc-(fc+x) and 2(fc+x)-fc begin to appear in the signal path? This would be the 3rd Order dynamic range. The dynamic range is sometimes measured from the noise floor but not always. This is because some amplifiers / mixers do not behave properly because the level of the 3rd Order products over some part of the allowed input level range does not increase at the rate of 3db for every 1db increase in the level of the input signals. fc and fc+x are chosen to put (at least one of) the third order signals in the IF passband? Yes. I assume that receiver circuit characteristics before the roofing filters (or IF bandpass filter) essentially determine the dynamic range. However, dynamic range figures always seem to degrade for small separations of fc and fc+x. Is this because fc and/or fc+x are falling within the IF passband and are producing spurious signals in the stages following the roofing filters? Yes, and this is something that many designers seem to forget. For the case of strong signals in the IF passband, are the dynamic range tests run with the AGC disabled? In actual operation, wouldn't the AGC reduce signal levels below the point where distortion products were being generated (in the stages following the roofing filters)? I believe that most if not all 3rd Order dynamic range tests on amateur receivers are run with the AGC disabled, but don't quote me! In actual operation the IMD generated by some types of AGC controlled amplifier can get worse as AGC is applied. It is up to the designer to do his job properly! The two tone test is only a proxy for the real world. In actual operation, if any signal (or signals) in the RF passband or mixer passband exceeds the receiver dynamic range, will ALL of the signals in the passband begin contributing third order products? Yes, how much will depend on individual levels and of course the receiver design. Is the magnitude of the third order distortion products a function of the degree of the nonlinearity? Can different receiver models with the same dynamic range numbers (operating under the same conditions) differ considerably in the signal strength of junk signals? Yes is the short answer. This is one good reason why 3rd Order dynamic range tests should be done with both signals in the passband which can expose problems which might exist after the IF filter in model A but not in model B. IMD generated by IF filters can be a problem which might not be fully exposed if the test signals are widely spaced. Two major issues are of concern here (1) the effect of the filter on the dynamic range of the driving stage and (2) the generation of IMD products within the filter which are passed on to the following IF cascade. When test results are phase noise limited, what is going on? Is the phase noise acting simply as RF noise that masks the spurious signals being observed? Or is it acting as a third signal that mixes with fc and fc+x and causes the production of third order products at a lower signal level than fc and fc+x would alone? Phase noise from a noisy LO has the effect of lifting the noise floor and is involved in reciprocal mixing. Phase Noise Limited means that the useful performance of the receiver has been compromised by LO noise, for example the 3rd Order dynamic range is reduced or limited by phase noise because there is less headroom between the increased noise floor and the point where the receiver runs out of steam. Reciprocal mixing takes place when the LO phase noise mixes with an unwanted signal to produce a noise IF signal which could mask weak real signals - an unwanted LO if you like. I hope that this helps a little. 73, Geoff GM4ESD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the

This is the unfortunate result of too many folks waiting too long for some new scrap of information about their new K3 radios. Off topic posts and even worse, people choosing up sides over Bill Gates. Man, that's boredom. Possibly also mixed with a liberal dose of new radio anxiety. [Elecraft] Soldering Stations??
I'm hoping to get a Hakko 936 (or it's clone) very soon and wondering what would be the best tip to order for SMT work? I'll be building the SoftRock Lite kit for use with my K3 so have decided it's time to upgrade the soldering tools. [Elecraft] elecraft pocket knife..
Here is my tale of woe.. When I bought my KX-1, Elecraft sent me a little engraved swiss-army style pocket knife, about 2 1/2 or 3 inches long. I gave that knife to my boy Patrick. Pat is now 10 and loved that knife, always ready to whip it out and solve any problem. Tonight he lost it at a park he was playing at, and is absolutley crushed that he lost something that his Dad gave him. If any of you have one of these knives you would be willing to part with at a reasonable price, I would be ever so welcome.
