[Elecraft] Why a K3?
Hello all, I have recently finished my K2 and was wanting to hear from the K3 three owners, prospective and actual, of how they like the rig. is the K3 just a less portable version of the K2 or is there a significant performance increase (using the K2 I am having a hard time understanding how that could be, however..) I am a one rig kinda operator and want to hear the replies before I start selling off equipment to get K3 cash. [Elecraft] Re: K3 KRC2
Hi John, Both! The K3 works with the KRC2 for controlling complex antenna or transverter switching. But it also provides amplifier control signals, as well as 4 open-drain band-data outputs. These are discussed in the Owner's manual, in the Rear Panel section. Normally the band-data signals output a 4-bit binary code that works with 3rd-party band decoders, and/or transverter addresses that you select on a per-transverter basis. But we could also allow these to be used as 4 general-purpose, active-low relay enables for small relays, or as signals you could derive relay drive from. The could be mapped per-band using a PC utility. This would require additional firmware that we haven't written, pending a survey of how operators would like to use them. 73, Wayne N6KR On Oct 24, 2007, at 4:29 AM, John Reilly wrote: Is the functionality of the KRC2 built into the K3, or is it still necessary for interfacing to amplifiers and antennas? - 73. RE: [Elecraft] Why a K3?
I would say for better performance in every mode, the K3 does AM, FM, 160 and 6 meters, RTTY is built in, AM sync detector, a better display, more knobs. With the K2, I think ssb was really an afterthought, as was dsp, and they are not as user friendly in the K2 as is likely to be the case with the K3. I think the K2 is best as a CW qrp rig with the auto antenna tuner built in. Its very good in that config. As a full feature radio for the shack, the K2 lacks a few features maybe, and its small. I want the K3 mostly for the AM part, as that is what I operate mostly, and I plan on using the transmitter as a driver (RF carrier) for the big homebrew rigs, and the receiver. I am sure I will check out rtty copy with it, and might love to do some CW if I ever get my speed up some. Who knows, I might even do some ssb with it if I hear anything interesting on that mode. It also might be great as a mobile rig in the car, there are lots of guys running AM mobile on 80 and 40 meters, and 10 meters when its open. The noise reduction stuff in the K3 should be great for that, as will the auto antenna tuner. I plan on getting another K2 and building it in the future, when I get the funds, as it is a very slick package as a CW qrp rig that you build. For the serious contester or DX hound, the K3 has many features and the performance those guys need and love. Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3 KRC2
The KRC2 actually has far more capabilities for controlling external devices than the K3. The KRC2 has 16 individual high current, high voltage sourcing drivers and 16 high current sinking drivers. These are commonly used to control antenna selection relays (the sourcing drivers) and bandpass filters (sinking drivers), but also may be used for switching a wide array of devices. The outputs can be controlled from a wide array of triggers, not just band selection. This gives the KRC2 capabilities far beyond any other selector on the market, and far more than the K3 gives. The good news is that the K3 can directly control the KRC2, so the two can work together quite nicely. On Oct 23, 2007, at 6:26 AM, wayne burdick wrote: Hi John, Both! Re: [Elecraft] K3 KRC2
The KRC2 is usable with the K3, and provides a lot of capability, however, you can also use simpler systems. There's BCD-encoded band data and you can get an antenna relay driver for about $20. that'll work with that- http://www.unifiedmicro.com/decoder.html. I'm planning to build a little circuit to take those BCD outputs and provide the ICOM band select voltage for my older ICOM amp. I'm starting the testing and calibration phase of the basic K3 assembly now, having started yesterday AM, and taking plenty of time out for other stuff, including nit-picking the manual. 73, doug Date: Wed, 24 Oct 2007 05:29:00 -0600 From: John Reilly [EMAIL PROTECTED] Is the functionality of the KRC2 built into the K3, or is it still necessary for interfacing to amplifiers and antennas? - 73. The Oregon state line is maybe a 7 hour drive from here. So, unless they have suppliers in the mountains in So. Cal., the fires are not a problem for the E-Boys and Girls. What next, a plague of locusts? I doubt it, not much for them to eat in Silicon Valley. Floods? Mud slides at times and in isolated places and almost always over a heavy commute road, usually following the previous year's big fire and this year's torrential rains. Fortunately, it's 85, clear, and calm in Auburn as I write this, and probably in the 70's in Aptos. Not much rain yet, and what we've had hasn't been even remotely close to torrential. Giant earthquake? The [in]famous San Andreas Fault runs sort of under San Francisco Bay. There are numerous other smaller faults too that create most of the earthquakes we might feel. Google Parkfield CA and pick the second hit for info. There is a National Park [name escapes me but I've been there] on State Route 25 that has a bunch of craggy peaks astride the SA Fault. It's actually only half of them ... the other half remain anchored to North America down in S. Cal. near Palm Springs. Fortunately for us [and for your K3] ... big, disaster-causing earthquakes are rare. OTOH, tornado alley sees them each year, and hurricane alley likewise. Eventually, Aptos will probably end up next to the Alaskan Panhandle, but not likely in my or anyone else's lifetime. I wonder what Elecraft will have designed and be selling then? While dropping stuff off at ups today, they wont take packages to many places in California... But UPS and the US Postal Service will take stuff from CA for anywhere else. I think that's what counts. [Elecraft] k3 on fire?
Julian G4ILO observed A quarter of a million people have been evacuated, according the BBC. That must have taken some doing. A half million as of October 23 at 2200 GMT, that's one out of six in the County. They're at the football stadium, at the horse track, and on Shelter island in the San Diego bay. I graciously offered to have the raging inferno down here this time so that Wayne and Eric can get the K3s out. The deal is they have to host the mudslides this coming Spring in return. ;-) People still moving here however - plenty of new neighbors coming here all the time. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3: supplied power cable specs?
Just out of curiosity (as I sit here revamping my station's power system), what gauge and length is the power cable supplied with the K3? Re: [Elecraft] OT -- San Diego wild fires
I turned on my two-meter HT today and heard K6MF station from NASA Moffett Field retransmitting audio from this morning's space shuttle launch. I checked Nasa TV and they were doing a replay of the launch video as well. I grabbed this picture of the fires from the first orbital pass. This is from this morning, about 10-15 minutes after launch, so probably just before 9AM PDT. Nasa has also its own page devoted to satellite fire imagery on their main site (linked to from here as well). The picture appears upside down from normal, probably due to the STS and camera orientation. http://wa5znu.org/log/2007/10/view-of-california-wildfires-from-space.html Leigh/WA5ZNU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] No Sun Spot DX -- QSL Cards!
In case you all find the following boring, at least go to the last paragraph for the whole point of this email! The following is related to Elecraft because it describes QSOs I've made mostly with my K2. It is even more appropriate, as you will see if you make it all the way through and to the end of this diatribe. I was quite busy on the radio about one year ago, when the sunspots were few, and sometimes zero. Lately I haven't been so active on the air due to a variety of things, but certainly not due to the lack of sunspots! I was pleasantly surprised to get an envelope full of QSL cards from the 8th Area QSL Buro via the mail today. These are the real thing, not those eQSLs. These have photographs printed on card stock that feels good in your hands and will be fun to look at many years from now. I looked through them all and they were either for QSOs that I had while HF mobile (DQ2006X for a special event station during the 2006 World Football Cup, that is of course Soccer) or operating from home with my Elecraft K2 at 5W (or less). Some of the dates and QSOs looked pretty familiar, such as October 15, 2006 (QSOs with F6FHO for my DX multiplier on 20m CW and VA2SG on 40m SSB), the weekend of last year's PA QSO Party when I operated from my home QTH in Lehigh County instead of heading out to Potter County or like this year to Mifflin County. Another familiar date was November 11, 2006, the weekend of ARRL November Sweepstakes Phone (QSO with VY2TT on PEI on 40m SSB). This looks like quite the contest station which is available as a rental property! Hmm, another vacation idea! Not all my QSOs are during contests, of course, and a couple of my most memorable DX contacts were also worked QRP with my K2 at 5W from home with a Carolina Windom 160. One of them was QSL'd as HA7TM/HI9 on both 40 160m CW (I've noticed that antenna works best on those bands and not so good on 80m, I guess it shows). My best long haul DX QSL card was a QSO I remember well (oh, from April 2005, I thought that one was a bit farther back in the logbook) on 40m CW early one morning before I went to work, working grayline to the Fiji Islands and snagging 3D2NA on Mana Island. It was especially memorable as I could barely detect a signal on the frequency and as I continued to listen and as the sky continued to brighten slightly I heard the signal level coming up and out of the noise until I figured I had nothing to lose, gave a call, and was pleasantly surprised by a reply! Hey, you never know unless you try! There was also Special Event Station VC3O for the 150th anniversary of the discovery of oil in Canada. This QSL has a nice photograph of a drilling rig shack used to keep the men out of the cold while drilling and then it is moved to the next location. It would have made a nice antenna tower as well had radio been around back in the 1850s! Okay, but I saved the very best for last. I hope you all made it to this point. This was truly a nice surprise and it was the last QSL card in the batch that I looked it, so was truly the best for last for me as well. This is a callsign we are all familiar with, and it featured a photograph of three things that are near and dear to all of us who read this. The first item of note was young boy, obviously in training for ham radio and hopefully a future generation ham in the making. The second was an Elecraft K2 and the third was an Elecraft Hex Key! Oh, the callsign, none other than VA3JFF/QRP, Jeff Hetherington, Contest Manager for QRP-ARCI! Thanks, Jeff, for the QSO, QSO, and hopefully for providing a future generation of hams to keep this wonderful hobby alive! 72 to all those whom I've QSO'd, QSL'd and hope to work again, at the bottom of the cycle to the top of the next!
