Lazarus is a better choice than professional development for amateur programmers for a number of reasons it is not appropriate to go into here. [Elecraft] New List Member with T1 Questions
Hello, everybody! I just joined this list and have REALLY been looking at the T1 Autotuner. Before I purchase one, I have some questions about using the T1 autotuner with my QRP gear. I have three QRP rigs - SW30+, HW-8, and a 20M rig made by A&A Engineering (Gary Breed K9AY). I have a SuperAntenna MP-1 and several end-fed wires cut for 15M, 20M, 30M, and 40M. Will I need a balun for the end-fed wires? Will the T1 work with the SuperAntenna MP1? Re: [Elecraft] K2 to MacLogger Connect?
Jack, i would suggest you using ZTerm to make a step-by-step test. ZTerm is a Terminal Program for the Mac like Hyperterm for Windows. The download is free. 1. Check Keyspan Driver and Hardware: - Disable Hardware Handshake and local echo in ZTerm. Be sure to choose the correct serial port. - Shorten Pin 2 + 3 on the serial connector of the Keyspan Adapter. - If you type into the Terminal you see the characters echoing when the Pin 2+3 are shortened, otherwise you have a Problem with the Keyspan Driver or Hardware. 2. Check connection to K2: Follow the Section "Serial Interface Test" in the KIO2 Manual. Just use ZTerm instead of Hyperterm. If this works, the problem should be within Maclogger. Unfortunately i don´t know anything about Maclogger. good luck, Wil / OE9WLJ On 08.11.2007, at 05:44, Jack Shrawder wrote: While waiting for your K3s, I wonder if anyone could help with a K2 to MacLogger connect problem? The system is: K2 to Keyspan USA-49WLC serial to USB, into a MacBook Pro running 10.4.10 and MacLogger 4.3.2.b16 First, repair idea was to check in the K2 menu to ensure the Port is "On"; it was. Then, attempted to fix via the following; downloaded the latest Keyspan driver (2.4), tried different ports in the Keyspan converter, tried different radio setup parameters for the KIO2. Checked K2 operation with the KAT100 tuner which runs off the KIO2 interconnect cable, (KAT100 seems to function normally with the KAT100). Not sure if this a meaningful test of KIO2 or not. Checked KIO2 plugs for good solder joints and for opens or shorts at each plug. Next, tried to a MacLogger connection with my K2 via an older PowerBook G4 with MacLogger 4.3.2 and latest Keyspan driver 2.4 with same "no go" results. In desperation, replaced USB cable from computer to Keyspan converter--no change. Can anyone give me anymore tests or things to try to solve this problem. I'm stumped at this point. [Elecraft] K3: mine is NOT on the way
Okay...so the end of April is shipping now. What can we learn? Ken's invoice is 47389. My invoice (May 18th) is 48130. Any guesses how many of those invoices are for K3's? Re: [Elecraft] K3: mine is NOT on the way
I haven't ordered my K3 yet (still saving up my pennies), but I follow every bit of info here religiously. I really don't understand this competitive sensitivity to numbers of K3s ordered/shipped and who's haven't shipped yet. Dave Benson (Smallwonder Labs) has for a long time listed every order not yet shipped on his website - by name and order date. He does this even though he may be way behind in shipping. It takes some time, but if Dave can do it (I think he's pretty much a one-man operation), I would think Elecraft could. Perhaps they could do it by this recently discovered "invoice number" if that is something everyone gets when they order??? Would save a lot of anxiety among "the natives," and reduce traffic here. 73, Randy, KS4L Thom LaCosta wrote: Perhaps the feeling is that the actual number of orders and the type radio ordered and the number of orders shipped is seen competitive information, and thus will be masked as much as possible. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Ham software
I also do professional programming, although I consider myself an engineer. I have written a number of free ham programs as well. My programs variously link to and support TRX-Manager, HRD, DXLabs Suite and N1MM. These are all excellent programs, and all are free except TRX-Manager, which is not expensive. I tend to use TRX-Manager for regular remote control operations, because I started out with it many, many years ago, but I like aspects of all these programs for specific needs. Laurent, Simon, Dave and Tom are all great guys and provide first rate support for their programs. Most of them have K3s on order, and probably monitor this reflector (Simon posts here regularly). I would simply try them all and pick the one you like best, whether it's free or not. For remote control, I think you'll find TRX and HRD the best. You may also want to visit my website for some free programs of use for remote control, www.telepostinc.com. 73, Larry N8LP Julian G4ILO wrote: > I don't have any axe to grind for any of the programs mentioned, and > in fact use none of them, but I have to take issue with the notion > that HRD is great just because it's free. I believe that the range and > quality of software available to hams is limited because of their > reluctance to pay for it, and that we are ultimately the poorer for it First, I'm a professional programmer. I've paid good money for some ham (and other) software, and it has turned out to be junk. Much ham software is written by hams who are not professional programmers, and it shows. There is a big difference in writing a program that is useful to you, and one that will work properly in multiple environments, has a polished interface, a balanced feature set, etc. Unfortunately, even if hams were more willing to pay for software, the market is small. The cost of professional programming is high, so that means that the per-unit cost of good ham software would need to be quite high for the publisher to make a profit. Do you want to pay $500 for a rig control program? I didn't think so. That's why we shouldn't expect to find much good ham software for sale. On the other hand, there is the author of HRD who is willing to provide a world-class program as a labor of love. We are very lucky. There are a few others that have decent shareware or low-cost programs. But they are not going to make a living that way. Another approach that works is the open-source model, which has given us the N1MM contest logging program. A little clunky, written in VB, it's nevertheless one of the best programs of its genre. And it is free too. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco -- ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] On watching order numbers
Ken's invoice is 47389. My invoice (May 18th) is 48130. Any guesses how many of those invoices are for K3's? I'd not considered that there were likely other (non-K3 items) ordered in a given period, so watching order numbers likely tells us little. So for sure, there were NOT more than 741 K3's ordered between Ken's of April 29 and mine of May 18. Not much information, is it? Oh really? I'd say there were quite likely MORE than that. A commonly-hear RUMOR says that there were over 700 sold at Dayton alone. There was a line at the order desk all the time they were taking orders. My guess is that there's not much to be gained from watching serial numbers as an indication of anything. For example, isn't SN 666 already out there ... because the buyer has a K1 numbered 666? I have no problem with this ... it's just an observation. 73! Ken Kopp - K0PP ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Hi Steve You will enjoy using the T1. It works best if not feed an endfed half wave. Just how long are your wire antennas? Here I use mine to feed my top loaded vertical on 160m. It also works nicely loading the same vertical as a nearly halfwave top loaded vertical on 80m. I operate it remotely at the base of the vertical, using a relay to provide the TUNE closure. Will I need a balun for the end-fed wires? With end fed wires you will not need a balun and very likely will not need an unun (unbalanced to unbalanced transformer) either. You should try to avoid half wave (very high Z) wire lengths. A good RF ground, e.g. "good" radials connected directly to ground connector of the tuner is always a good idea. vy 73 de toby ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. What difference should I expect in performance between the 8-pole 400hz filter and the 5-pole 500hz filter and is the 8-pole filter worth the extra investment? RE: [Elecraft] New List Member with T1 Questions
Sri for the blank message in this thread. Phone rang and I was distracted. Toby and Robert have reiterated what I wrote anyway! A couple of other points based on experience with my T1. The T1, like all Elecraft tuners, uses a highly-efficient L-network matching system. You'll find that it handles a very wide range of impedances. It has nothing to do with the tuner, but those antennas (1/4 wave wires and short loaded vertical "super antenna") have low radiation resistances - especially that "super antenna"! That means your performance is heavily dependent upon the quality of the RF ground you provide. While the T1 will probably give you a 1:1 match with little or no ground, the system will radiate much, much better with at least a rudimentary 1/4 wave long "counterpoise" wire connected to the T1's ground lug. You'll need one for each band for best performance. Use insulated wire and keep the far end "in the clear" as it will be "hot" with RF. If outdoors, it's smart to string the "counterpoise" wires above head height to avoid the earth and tripping/strangling folks . Indoors you can put it on the floor, run it around baseboards, etc. Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] New List Member with T1 Questions
Thanks to all who have responded so far to my questions about the T1 autotuner. The main feature, other than the great reviews that I've read about it, that attracted me to the T1 is the fact that it has a self-contained power supply (a 9V battery). In my original post, I mentioned that I used dedicated end-fed halfwave wires with quarterwave radials. I cut my wires using the calculations on KD4SAI's webpage (http://www.qsl.net/kd4sai/antencal.html). I use only 1 radial/counterpoise. Sounds like I may need to use several radials if I go with the T1. Again, thanks for your responses. Keep 'em coming!! Steve, N5WBI wrote: Sounds like I may need to use several radials if I go with the T1. --- The T1 won't require you use more radials! Indeed, the T1 will probably match just fine with NO counterpoise/radial wire(s). But a 1:1 match doesn't mean the antenna is radiating efficiently. An end fed low-impedance radiator is very dependent upon the quality of the RF ground for efficient operation. That has nothing to do with the tuner. No matter what tuner or matching system you may use, or even if the antenna is designed to be fed directly from a 50 ohm transmission line, the performance of such antennas is highly dependent upon the quality of the RF ground. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
Good Evening, The weather has been wonderful for the last two weeks. Other than a heavy rain yesterday it has been sunny and mild. Great for cleaning up the yard, cutting, splitting, and stacking wood, plus taking hikes around the country side. Luckily the rain of yesterday has moved south so the folks in California can enjoy a little respite from non-stop sun. Thursday I got out to start cutting up another tree when the woods exploded. Nothing like flushing four grouse at once! They sure do make a racket when they take off. I only saw silhouettes but think they were most likely ruffed grouse and not the more uncommon spruce grouse. I am glad they're back. It means my work in the back has opened up some area for them. The deer and elk will now have an easier time in the back yard because they don't have to walk around so many trees. Another few months of work and that land will be clear. One of my walks this week was to inspect the damage to the rest of the woods. I'll not be done clearing that out for many years. There must be five acres of wind fallen trees. Twenty meters has been tough this week but I was able to get through each day. Forty meters supported the fox hunt nicely offering both foxes to me here in Oregon. Hopefully we will be able to hear each other tomorrow evening so we can see how the weather is in your part of the world. Please take notice of the time change. Local time stays the same so we will be fighting darkness on both nets. Twenty meters will be open for a short while at the beginning but the easternmost folks will disappear quickly. So, let's try to work them first since the western folks will be easier to find later on. Please join us tomorrow evening. Tomorrow: 1) Hail signs (first letter or two of the suffix of your call) 2) NCS help (as well as QSP/QNP help) Please join us: Monday z (Sunday 4 PM PST) 14050 kHz Monday 0300z (Sunday 7 PM PST) 7045 kHz 73, Kevin. KD5ONS ecn.visionseer.com P.S. Comet Holmes is well placed. I hope to see a hint of a tail tonight. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Assembly Manual......web or full???
The Web version has low-res pictures and that makes it smaller. If it helps any I built my K3 from that version of the assembly manual and the pictures are sufficiently detailed to determine what you're supposed to do. There are two places where the pictures are of a different (older? newer?) version of the RF board (figs 56 and 58), but it's completely obvious what they're trying to show you (the important components were in the same location on my board as in the picture; it was two nearby components that were different). Fig 57 shows the components in the location that matched my board. There are pictures of a couple connectors that need to mate when you're attaching the front panel assembly to the RF board assembly that have plenty of resolution but the connectors themselves were harder to see on my boards than they were in the pictures (Fig 54). And it doesn't matter anyway because that step is difficult no matter what pictures they show you. There are some pictures very early in the process of locations of standoffs that aren't very helpful (figures 7 and 9) but it's because they don't give enough context, not because they aren't of sufficient resolution. If you refer back to the location of the mixer board and noise blanker board in figure 1 it will give you a clue where the standoffs go. Don't forget to check the site for an update after you get your K3. The one in the box (or the one you printed out today) may be older than the one on the Web site. Also don't forget to apply the errata. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Assembly Manual......web or full???
Probably the reason the hi-res version hasn't been put on line may be because Eric is focused on herding K3s out the door. He handles all the files put on the server. In the current manual the assembly step referring to Figures 7 and 9 specifically suggests consulting Figure 14 which also shows those positions on the overall board in case the builder has trouble finding the connectors by their J-number. (I believe I added that cross reference based on your comments when you built your K3, Craig, tnx! ;-) Craig is right. The K3 shown in the pictures is a pre-production unit assembled last June, and some boards are a bit different in places. We've taken the time to shoot new pictures wherever we felt the difference might be obvious and confusing to builders. Normally I'd have updated all the illustrations with production-level boards, but with the delays in getting critical parts in and starting shipments, no one, especially me, wanted to suggest that a set of boards come to me for an extended photo session instead of going straight into a kit and out the door! And Craig's suggestion is very important: be sure to check the current errata on the web site. We're making little tweaks and improvements almost daily as builder comments come in, like Craig's. If you have any corrections or suggestions, I'd appreciate your dropping a note to me: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Tnx Ron AC7AC -Original Message- The Web version has low-res pictures and that makes it smaller.
