Ian, G4ICV, AB2GR, K2 #4962 I once worked as a production manager for a company that manufactured and sold electronic camera control equipment for the printing industry. This was in the early 70's before everything was solid state. We had a burn in room where after going through quality control, all of the equipment was turned on and left running for 24 hours while setting on spring mounted shelves that were shaken violently enough that the units had to be secured to the shelves. We did this to simulate the vibration of shipping via truck and aircraft. We then checked each unit for adjustment changes, etc. If they failed on the vibrator they were repaired and sent back to the vibrator for another run. We never had a unit come back due to bad soldering or loose nuts and bolts because the vibration burn in would find these troubles for us before we shipped. It's possible that tested K3 units are suffering from vibration during shipping which is revealing those anomalies that won't show up until after the units and kits are subjected to shipping vibration. You might be surprised how much vibration a cargo aircraft has during takeoff, landing and flight. Then there are the cross country trucks and local delivery trucks that have a lot more vibration in their cargo areas than an aircraft. I have posted the latest image on my web site (http://www.astromag.co.uk/k3/). My S/N is early 100's and it definitely needed the mod. Open your K3 (bottom panel closest to the front panel) and measure C222. If it's 0.1 uF, the mod has already been installed. Unfortunately the only way to tell, since SMD caps are unmarked, may be to use a capacitance meter (unless Elecraft can suggest a better method). Bill W4ZV wrote: The production start date for this mod could be in error on the webpage. I know this issue has been known about well before S/N 211. My S/N is early 100's and it definitely needed the mod. I believe G4AON (K3 S/N 80) was the first to discover the CW rise time issue. From his K3 review: There were no high power peaks when transmitting on low power and the waveform of CW transmissions were smooth and clean when observed on an oscilloscope. The rise and fall times were originally fixed and fairly soft at approx 8 mS rise and 5 mS fall, not surprisingly there are no signs of key clicks. A later change to the value of capacitor C222 (to 100 nF) reduces the rise time to 5 mS. The time delay between the linear keying line going low and RF appearing from the antenna socket is approximately 10 mS, linears that are not able to switch in 10 mS would need to use the transmit inhibit feature, QSK CW would be impossible with such a linear. A later firmware upgrade is planned to offer variable time delays on the linear keying line, for example the Kenwood TS-480 offers 10 mS or 25 mS depending on QSK or semi-break in keying is used. The oscilloscope trace shown below was triggered by the linear keying Voltage going low and shows a single Morse dit at 20 words per minute, power output 10 Watts, this was taken after changing C222 to 100 nF. http://www.astromag.co.uk/k3/ (scroll down to CW waveform) 73, Bill -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-Enhancements-and-Application-Notes-Page-tp16343769p16349901.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. No, but the K3 should have a mode memory so that particular EQ settings (including OFF) remain with particular modes when changing back and forth. TX EQ can be potentially useful in equalizing the amplitudes of the four tones in FSK441 (used in high-speed meteor scatter) if the TX passband isn't quite flat. [Elecraft] K2 Audio mod comment
Hello All, Matti, TF3MA has suggested a mod for the K2 to improve the low frequency audio response by increasing the value of C25 and C26. Matti used 100 nF / 0.1 uF in parrallel to C25 and C26. I had some 470 nF / 0.47 uF smd (1206) capacitors available and soldered these at the bottom side of the control board PCB. This is a very easy mod and only requires one to remove the top cover and uninstalling the control board. As a result it is now a joy to listen at a low pitch in CW mode. Thanks! Roelof Bakker, pa0rdt TF3MA wrote: But I discovered that my K2, had a rather limited low freq audio response. So I took a look at the schematic for the audio circuit in the K2... The original low freq. cutoff (-3db) freq. is approx. 640Hz (with KAF or DSP moduls installed) or 400Hz (with no audio moduls) determined by C25, C26 and the 5kOhm volume control (and NE612 mixer impedance), to extend the audio frequency response for the low freq. I put 0.1uF SMD across C25 and C26, extending the low frequency response to approx. 320Hz. This improves the SSB sound of the receiver, and improves SNR when copying low pitch CW signals. This simple mod increases the rx audio signal at 300 Hz by about 3dB. -- Mijn Postvak In wordt beschermd door SPAMfighter. 936 spam-mails zijn er tot op heden geblokkeerd. There are so many to choose from ... it's hard to make a single recommendation, especially since you've never used one. Since you don't have bad habits to unlearn (from, say, using a bug), I would recommend that, if you can, start out with a light touch and close spacing, which will serve you well as you build speed. I've been trying out one of N3ZN's keys lately and am very impressed by the build quality and the performance for price. Certainly not cheap, at around $200. After some encouraging words from G4AON I've just changed the cap and the difference in the waveform is substantial. Previously the leading edge was very gradual and the amplitude actually increased throughout the length of the element making it difficult to pick a 'full power' point with which to measure the rise time. The wave shape is now symmetrical and level with both leading and trailing edges timed at pretty much 5ms. As Dave G4AON has noted the keying delay has reduced slightly to about 8ms but my Acom 1000 in qsk doesn't mind that. 73, Stewart, GW0ETF -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/K3-Enhancements-and-Application-Notes-Page-tp16343769p16357824.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Using the G4FON software, when I was traveling, I would sit in front of the TV at night and every commercial (there are a lot) I would mute the TV and start G4FON sending common words, and I would type them. It helps that I can touch type. I would often have to go back and read what I had copied, and was amazed at some of the complicated words. Three things have helped me, though as far as QSO's digressing from the script, I still have trouble. *Contesting *MP3 player *Listening while otherwise occupied Contesting - they go fast, and I have to often sit there and listen over and over. But it is a chance to get a lot of practice in a short period of time. You are listening for your call, and then any exchange, this is all after you figure out their call. Start at the top of the CW band (where they are going slower) and work your way down. Morse runner is good for this too. MP3 player - I get the archived MP3's from W1AW and load them on my cell phone MP3 player. I can then, when driving, on when I have a moment, sit and listen to them. Often at a faster speed than I can copy everything. Makes me stretch my abilities. Even if I just copy pieces, I am happy. Then when I go back in speed, it seems much easier. I will often let this play at night when I go to bed. Have to watch that though, as too much code at night, and I start dreaming in morse, and that is REALLY weird. Listening to the radio while doing other stuff - I have a rig in the car, mainly for listening to 20m cw. I work from home and will, at times, let the rig run and just listen and copy bits and pieces. Just today, with the rig on in the vehicle, and driving along, I was copying good chunks of a QSO, in my head. Guy's name was Evan, and he lived in Horseshoebay, TX (that was a tough QTH to copy by the way) and I _think_ that is near Austin. It is funny you mention copying words. I first noticed that when I was active on FISTS. The sound of the word FISTS is _very_ distinctive, and I learned that first. But then I started noticing other words. One that was initially quite painful was his. The, is, and hr came to me pretty quick, followed by fb. To this day, Q still messes me up. You put a C in front of it, and I am just fine. Great thread. Know I'm a bit late, but really enjoying it. Dave Wilburn K4DGW K2/100 - S/N 5982 A dead enemy is a peaceful enemy.blessed be the peacemakers. G4ILO wrote: I'm glad it's not just me that has this problem. I struggled with Morse for years due to the way I learned it to pass the test, running each letter through a lookup table in my head, which was too slow a method for anything above 12wpm. Thanks to using what I understood was the Koch method (which seems pretty much like your Farnsworth method) I have re-learnt the code so that I can now instinctively recognize letters, numbers and common punctuation at around 20-25wpm. But I still get hung up converting the letters to words at that speed. If you spelt something out phonetically to me, I would copy it letter by letter and would have to have a second look at the whole thing when you finished, to get the word itself. It's the same in CW, and by the time I have done that I have missed the first couple of letters of the next word and get flustered and it takes a while to pick it up again. I don't seem to be able to copy letters AND be working out what the word could be at the same time. (The XYL says it's because men can only do one thing at a time, women can multi-task...) It's easier copying on the air because the actual vocabulary used in most contacts is quite limited and you recognize words like like NAME, QTH, RST and so on. But I can get thrown if someone has a QTH I've never heard of. I stick to contests or working DX where the exchange is predictable. I'm afraid to return to a CQ, never mind call CQ myself, in case I get someone who wants to chat and I can't follow the conversation. - Julian, G4ILO K3 s/n: 222 K2 s/n: 392 G4ILO's Shack: www.g4ilo.com Zerobeat Ham Forums: www.zerobeat.net/smf ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] k2 test rx v.poor
Hello, Chris: I have seen occasional references to low sensitivity of the K2 during construction, and the reasons may vary. During the ongoing construction of my own K2 (#6425) I had similar symptoms as you have, and finally found out that U12 was bad. I started a thread on this on 17-March, and you may check out if the symptoms of your unit, and the measurements, are the same as I had. Incidentally, I received all kinds of suggestions to cure the problem, except the correct one - replacing U12. So, I wonder how prone these chips are to failing... If you come to the point of removing U12, it may not be straightforward. I had been given the advice of cutting the chip leads, and then solder each foot individually out of the board. In my case this did not work out successfully, so finally I simply desoldered each pin using a vacuum pump as far as I could. When all of the pins were reasonably solder free I used long nose pliers to loosen each foot in its hole (from the board bottom side) while keeping the remaining solder molten with my soldering iron. This way I was able to loosen up all eight feet in the mounting holes and then pull the chip out of its place. 73 - Kristinn, TF3KX http://radio.tf3kx.googlepages.com Chris-584 wrote: hi im at the stage with k2 sno 6436 where i have done alignment test part 2 pll, vco, bfo, all tested ok with good ranges. vfo linearization ok, but next to no audio noise in my headphones on recive (audio side tone good and strong on test) if i send some v,low rf from my old icom on 40m i can hear it but verry week.rf pre amp makes it a little better .att kills it. if i have some low rf at 5.915mhz on a wire and put it neer u11 or u12 i can hear the signal verry strong. neer to q22 its week agc, fast/slow/off has no effect, could this be down to u4 on control board its out put is 7.55v i am waiting for a new one from elecraft my last 3 k2's worked like a dream i would be happy to recive any help thanks chris g0wfh ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 has been sold
Thanks for the response. I have received many emails asking why I have sold the K3. We are about to retire, and have purchased a RV . For the next year are two we plan on being full time RVer's. As soon as we are tied of traveling , the first thing I will do is order another K3. It is a notch above anything that I have used. Comments: If you are using a non peak reading watt meter you will not see a full 1400w on the watt meter. What you will see is the average power output which could be considerably less than the key down on tune output. Whistling into the mic should give you the same reading as your tuning output unless you have the mic gain too low. You may have the mic gain too low. Don't try to get the watt meter to read 144 watts when you speak into the mic unless the meter is a peak reading meter. If it's not a peak reading watt meter and you drive the amp on speech to 1400 watts on the meter you may damage the amp, and you will surely be transmitting more than the legal limit (1500w PEP). If I'm assuming that your level of expertise in using an amplifier and watt meter, please forgive me.
