Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY Configuration

2008-11-04 Thread alsopb

Have it working.
K3 accessory plug pin 1 to DXP38 FSK connector.

Other things:
1) K3 transmits RTTY upside down with the DXP38. You must invert the
transmit polarity somehow --e.g. via software package.
2) Turn DXP38 on before the K3. For some odd reason, the PTT hangs in
transmit if you turn the K3 on first.
3) K3 line out to DXP38 AF in plug.

The following is a narrative taken from Sunday Morning's televised
'Meet The Press'. The author is employed by none other than the
  Washington Post!!

From Sunday's 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, Televised 'Meet the
Press' Senator Obama was asked about his stance on the American Flag.

General Bill Ginn' USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain WHY he
doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.
The General also stated to Obama that according to the United
States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171...

During rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is
displayed, all present (except those in uniform) are expected to stand
at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Or, at
the very least, 'Stand and Face It'.

  Senator Obama replied:
'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived
as taking sides'. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the
American flag is a symbol of oppression.'

'The anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the
bombs bursting in air and all that sort of thing.'

  ARE YOU READY FOR THIS???

Obama said: 'The National Anthem should be 'swapped' for
something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like
To Teach the World To Sing'. If that were our anthem, then, I might
salute it. In my opinion, we should consider reinventing our National
Anthem as well as 'redesign' our Flag to better offer our enemies hope
and love. It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level
of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of waring
people, conduct ourselves as the nations of Islam where peace prevails -
  - - perhaps a state or period of mutual accord could exist between our
  governments .'

When I become President, I will seek a pact or
agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war
or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive
thoughts. We as a Nation have placed upon the nations of Islam an unfair
injustice which is WHY my Wife disrespects the Flag and she and I have
attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past'.

'Of course now, I have found myself about to become the
President of the United States and I have put my hatred aside. I will
use my power to bring CHANGE to this Nation, and offer the people a new
path. My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First black
Family. Indeed, CHANGE is about to overwhelm the United States of
  America'

  WHAAAT the Hell is that!!!
  Yes, you read it right.

This could possibly be our next President.
  I, for one, am speechless!!!

Dale Lindsborg,

HOW FAST CAN YOU FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW???

[Elecraft] XG1 Verification of Output Level

2008-11-04 Thread Gordon Lois Duff
I have had an XG1 for some time now. I think it originally showed -72 dBm
on my Flex SDR1000.

Now I see about -68 dBm on the SDR1000 and -60 dBm on my QS1R.

How can I verify that the XG1 is operating correctly? I have measured the
voltage at C3/R3 and it is 1.22 volts (and the battery is 2.99 volts).

Once I have verified the XG1 output I will look into the receiver
performance.

[Elecraft] K3 sweepstakes this weekend

2008-11-04 Thread Dick Housden, W0NTA
Hi Don,

Thank you for the SSCW contact this past weekend. I believe you were the one
who told me I had a chirp. (If not, I am sorry to have burdened you with this).

After the report, I immediately switched from my K3 to a K2 and finished the
contest. I was using N3FJP software to key the K3 as well as a paddle for
keying the K3 keyer. Can you tell me how bad the chirp was? I have had two
other reports like this during contests - even the QRP ARCI at 5 watts. It
seems it comes on after I have used the K3 for a substantial amount of time. I
contacted Elecraft support and they suggested some things to check out, but it
is very difficult to do when the radio works fine most of the time. I set it up
here with a loop from the logging program and let it run into a dummy load for
over an hour with no change. I may have to send it back to them for their
analysis.

Anyway, I finished the contest with 706 Qs in 77 sections (no ND, NL, NT) for a
score of 100K+. Sure is a fun contest. I really enjoy the K3, but the K2 is
still a very good radio for CW contests also. I made 357 Qs with the K3 and 349
with the K2.

Thanks and best regards.

I agree fully and can add two more rigs to what Jerry already mentions
above:

Kenwood TS-950SDX + SM-230 Panadapter.
Icom IC-7800 built-in bandscope.

Not only is the PowerSDR panadapter display the best I have ever seen, the
point and click feature for SP in a contest is simply unbeatable. If you
already own and use a later model logging computer then the addition of the
LP-PAN IF interface and PowerSDR software to the K3 is, in my opinion, the
single biggest enhancement available for the K3 (in fixed station use) at
this time.

My 2 cents,

[Elecraft] K3 with SDR-IQ

2008-11-04 Thread Paul Christensen
Has anyone had an opportunity to compare LP-PAN with the SDR-IQ using
SpectraVue? I am interested in using the K3 in a compact, portable
environment with my laptop PC where I would like to avoid the use of an
external sound card if possible, and the SDR-IQ seems to meet this
requirement.

Moreover, with the N8LP I.F. buffer mod conducted on the K3, is there any
reason to pursue any further I.F. level or impedance optimization when using
the SDR-IQ? Tnx!

RE: [Elecraft] Request

2008-11-04 Thread Darwin, Keith
Are you asking about RX audio, TX audio or both? SSB, AM, FM, or (for
RX) CW?

For CW, I find the K3 to be the 3rd best audio I've ever had. The Drake
2B and K1 both had smoother sweeter sounding CW tones but their AGC left
a lot to be desired. The K2 was 3rd in line with good sounding CW and
good AGC. I place the K3 just a bit behind the K2 in terms of raw
smooth CW tone but the rig takes top position when you factor in the
rest of the things that matter in a CW receiver.

SSB - I haven't a clue. I haven't even hooked a mic up to the rig.

I assume your are talking about TX audio because you are asking about what
microphone we recommend.
You can use pretty much every microphone you can find and get good audio
reports. You can adjust the K3 so it will accept a very wide range of
microphones. Some of us get good reports with a cheap gaming headset, others
use more expensive headsets like the Heil Pro Set Plus. You can't really go
wrong.

I gave up a 756 PRO II for the K3.  I was going to keep the rig but after a
week of using the K3 I put it on the market.  Why?  Well, I use to own a 765
which has the sweetest audio I've ever heard on a rig.  IMHO.  The K3 audio is
as sweet or better than the 765.  I've always had issues with the 756 PRO II
audio because I was so fatigued after a contest.  Not so with the K3.  The K3's
audio is very good.

2008-11-04 Thread Lee Buller

After reading your post again.I found that I was a little off as to what
you wanted.  The audio xmit is great for the K3...and has gotten better with
firmware upgrades over the last several months.  You can tailor the audio Xmit
for your voice and the microphone you are using.  It is quite versatile in the
xmit audio chain, but tI am sure you are going to have to play with it to get
the audio you want.

I gave up a 756 PRO II for the K3. I was going to keep the rig but after a
week of using the K3 I put it on the market. Why? Well, I use to own a 765
which has the sweetest audio I've ever heard on a rig. IMHO. The K3 audio
is as sweet or better than the 765. I've always had issues with the 756 PRO
II audio because I was so fatigued after a contest. Not so with the K3.
The K3's audio is very good.

RE: [Elecraft] Request

2008-11-04 Thread Darwin, Keith
Uh, actually, I don't think that is the best. Feeding the rigs through
a stereo amp to stereo speakers will certainly give you more frequency
response and may smooth the midrange some, but it will also give you
much more high freq noise and low freq rumble. It may make signals
harder to copy (although they'll sound nice when they're strong).

Of course, who am I to talk. I use hi-fi headphones all the time.

Even with hi-fi speakers / headphones, the quality character of the
receive audio varies widely amongst ham rigs. Some sound harsh - spiky
- jumpy - and just plain loud no matter what the volume setting. Some
sound sweet smooth. Using great speakers or headphones will let you
hear the differences but they won't make the harsh sound go away.

Have the K3 control switching between 1:1 and 4:1 on the BL-3. Where is the

[Elecraft] Re: K3 sweepstakes this weekend

2008-11-04 Thread Don Rasmussen
Hi Dick,

Well - I didn't want to complain, but I will provide feedback to a station that
may know about the unique sound (homebrew gear), or may not know that something
unusual is going on with the station. I gave you the 589C and later keyed
chirp because it's the only word I know of to describe an unusual condition
on transmitted cw.

With analog radios there are fewer sounds that are made from an out of spec
transmitter, your signal was certainly not chirp as in the traditional sense.
(bwop bip bwop bip).

I also had one report of bad keying myself over the weekend, but my secondary
receiver revealed nothing unusual and the next few contacts my sig ok? was
answered positive so I kept operating.

I've replied to the list in case anyone else might be interested.

Great job on the qso counts - I enjoyed 200 contacts on 20m - S P - but never
send in my log.

Thanks,
Don wb8yqj

Hi Don, Well, seems I sent my message for you to the reflector. Here it is
again.
Thank you for the SSCW contact this past weekend. I believe you were the
one
who told me I had a chirp. (If not, I am sorry to have burdened you with
this).
After the report, I immediately switched from my K3 to a K2 and finished the
contest.
I was using N3FJP software to key the K3 as well as a paddle for keying the K3
keyer.
Can you tell me how bad the chirp was? I have had two other reports like this
during
contests - even the QRP ARCI at 5 watts. It seems it comes on after I have
used the
K3 for a substantial amount of time. I contacted Elecraft support and they
suggested
some things to check out, but it is very difficult to do when the radio works
fine
most of the time. I set it up here with a loop from the logging program and
let it
run into a dummy load for over an hour with no change. I may have to send it
back
to them for their analysis. Anyway, I finished the contest with 706 Qs in 77
sections
(no ND, NL, NT) for a score of 100K+. Sure is a fun contest. I really enjoy
the K3,
but the K2 is still a very good radio for CW contests also. I made 357 Qs with
the
K3 and 349 with the K2. Thanks and best regards. Dick Housden, W0NTAGreeley, CO

[Elecraft] Sound perception

2008-11-04 Thread Jim Miller
IMHO, Sound perception is probably one of the most variable things of all. For
instance, MY hearing is 10 dB down up to about 1500 Hz and by 1700 Hz it is 50
dB down for the remainder of the spectrum. I asked the audiologist what was
considered totally deaf - she said 70 dB was deaf. (and I thought I could hear
just fine, almost, except for my wife (higher frequency and softer voice)and I
didn't need to hear her anyway, LOL)

Does anyone think the way I adjust my audio would be the same as the way they
like it. I doubt it. Trying to answer a question of what is the best for
audio for any one person OR situation is virtually impossible.

I do use the original Heil headset with the HC4 element and the original
Goldline with the HC5 and full-range elements.

[Elecraft] K3 and DXBase

2008-11-04 Thread Bill Parry
Howdy Guys,

I am having some difficulty getting DXBase to talk to my brand new K3. I
have been assured that if you select the K2 as the radio selection, this
will work.

The radio talks to my computer because I can do the updates. All of the
parameters match for the radio, the com (6) and DXBase. I have made a couple
of calls to tech support for Elecraft and they haven't gotten back to me. My
radio has the newest updates (even newer than the ones that are available on
the site.)

Anyone have this kind of problem getting DXBase to talk to the computer/K3?

[Elecraft] Desk Mic with DTMF Tone Pad

2008-11-04 Thread Phil Kane

I am currently using an Adonis (Japanese brand) desk microphone with
my K2 and two ICOM VHF/UHF radios by means of a ready-made
three-position switch and cable harness. I have had good reports on
both the K2 SSB and the ICOM FM radios.

I need to have a tone pad for certain functions, but (a) Adonis
apparently does not make a desk mic with one and (b) the importer
claims that Adonis no longer ships anything to the US.

As a result, I am looking for a decent-sounding desk mic with tone
pad that has an 8-pin Foster connector with the pin-out for the
switchbox (furnished on request - because of limited eyesight I have
problems with detailed soldering) or a suitable adapter to it.

Recommendations ??

Doug, thanks for the Q this weekend!

I operated at Ray W2RE's QTH and we used my call. This was my first SS
ever and we used Ray's new #1965 K3 and a MP for the other radio.

What a great time! The K3 performed flawlessly and it's absolutely
amazing how there is almost no fatigue running that rig. The receiver
is just so quiet and so smooth.

Our goal was 1000 Q's and a clean sweep and we met both.

We needed NWT and AK for the last 2 and they both called us in the
last few hours of the test ;)

There was one issue with the K3 that I noticed. If I had the width
squeezed to 250hz and forgot, I wondered why I didn't hear stations
calling.

Open it back up to 500 and the world reappeared!

Re: [Elecraft] Sound perception

2008-11-04 Thread Brian Lloyd

On Nov 4, 2008, at 6:12 PM, Jim Miller wrote:

IMHO, Sound perception is probably one of the most variable things
of all. For instance, MY hearing is 10 dB down up to about 1500 Hz
and by 1700 Hz it is 50 dB down for the remainder of the spectrum.
I asked the audiologist what was considered totally deaf - she said
70 dB was deaf. (and I thought I could hear just fine, almost,
except for my wife (higher frequency and softer voice)and I didn't
need to hear her anyway, LOL)

Does anyone think the way I adjust my audio would be the same as the
way they like it. I doubt it. Trying to answer a question of what
is the best for audio for any one person OR situation is virtually
impossible.

I do use the original Heil headset with the HC4 element and the
original Goldline with the HC5 and full-range elements.

Well, there are two parts to this. One is a function of frequency
response and the other is a function of distortion products. Many of
us are suffering from varying degrees of hearing loss. I suffer from
tinnitus (ringing of the ears) which can mask some of the high-
frequency content from the voice, usually women's voices. (My wife
occasionally accuses me of selective hearing. :-) Anyway, I do benefit
from using headphones and providing a bit of a boost to the higher
frequencies, e.g. starting at around 1KHz with boost increasing to
around +6dB at 3KHz. You can make this sort of improvement with a
graphical or parametric equalizer. (I prefer parametric myself but
they are hard to come by.)

Distortion products typically impart either a warm, fat sound; i.e.
low order, mostly 2nd harmonic; or a hard, edgy sound; i.e. high
order. Either can obscure readability to some extent. One of the
reasons the old tube rigs were so pleasant to listen to is because
they had almost no high-order distortion. It was almost all 2nd and a
touch of 3rd. I could listen to my Hammerlund HQ-180X all day and all
night very happily with no ear fatigue.

If you suffer from that hard, edgy, fatiguing sound, try stealing the
signal before it gets to the built-in audio amp and feed it to a good
hi-fi amp to see what you hear. Get the signal right from the detector
if you can. It can make a *huge* difference. (My experience is that
most manufacturers of ham gear really skimp on the quality of the
audio chain.)

Bill,

Check the data rates for both the K3, the software and your com port -
The program may be trying to run at 4800 since you have selected K2

Note: the K3 Utility program can set the K3 for the baud rate that it

[Elecraft] K3 Subreceiver Icom 756 Pro II comparison

2008-11-04 Thread Gil Gibbs
I'm quite curious, just wondering if the K3 subreceiver modules are
beginning to get out to all those whom ordered them? My little K3 rig is
looking very pretty, now waiting for my setup of the dipole(s) I have in
mind, so a completely rounded out rig will be the best toy to keep my
mind focused, learn new tricks. I've been using my IC-756 Pro II rig as
a comparison as I built my K2 originally, and the quality of both is
incredible. The K3 is an improvement, so I'm going to have a dandy time
driving my retired scientist of a sister out of her mind by having to
either tell me to put on the headphones while she watches TV, or take
off the headphones so she can talk to me!
The next stage is to get a nice little computer set up so I can do
the digital modes, been missing them.

Anyone with any answers about the subreceiver?

Tnx, 73's

Re: [Elecraft] K3 with SDR-IQ

Paul, I use a Perseus SDR (see QST for December 08 for the review, also
on the members site). Perseus has a USB2 interface rather than the
narrow band sound card approach. I don't use the IF out of the K3 with
Perseus, but connect them in parallel using an outboard ferrite splitter
on the RF IN/OUT of the K3's KXV3 interface module. Frequency linking
them via Ham Radio Deluxe so that either the K3 tunes the Perseus or
vice versa. The combination works very well, indeed the noise reduction
in the Perseus is superior to that in the K3. The receiver performance
is similar for both as the Perseus has a 3rd order IMD of 97 dB at 2 KHz
spacing.

The only downside to Perseus is the current lack of support from 3rd
party programs which seem to favour the 192 KHz bandwidth simpler SDR

Bill,

If you are using a USB to serial adapter, try setting the speed as high
as you can - it is counterintuitive, but many adapters have problems at
low speeds but work fine at higher speeds. Again make sure everything

If you possibly can, try using a real serial port, at least as a trial.

When I become President, I will seek a pact or

or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive
thoughts. We as a Nation have placed upon the nations of Islam an unfair
injustice which is WHY my Wife disrespects the Flag and she and I have
attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past'.

'Of course now, I have found myself about to become the

path. My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First black

 America'

 WHAAAT the Hell is that!!!
 Yes, you read it right.

This could possibly be our next President.
 I, for one, am speechless!!!

[Elecraft] K3 Analog S-meter

2008-11-04 Thread Joel R. Hallas
David, W4SMT,

Thanks for that wonderful S-meter application!

I finally had an opportunity to install and run it today, and I think it is
absolutely fantastic! Thanks very much for sharing it with us.

While I know it is kinda whimsical, as an old boat anchor guy, and a
published admirer of the IC-7800 virtual analog S-meter, I do enjoy having
your meter on my PC, why not!

BTW, I'm running it with LP-Bridge (www.telepostinc.com) along with LP-PAN
and up to three other aps, so it doesn't add much to the overhead and is a
very nice touch.

This is a great group with folk sharing their ideas and their
accomplishments -- great to be a K3er!

[Elecraft] MC-60 Mic

2008-11-04 Thread Monty Shultes

Simon -

I use an MC-60. If it has a preamp be sure to bypass it. You may have
to ground the cable shields in the mic; the essential thing is that L4
on the K3 Front Panel Board be jumpered (and K7 on the IO Board if you
use the rear mic connector.) I now get great reports on my MC-60.

[Elecraft] K3: KRX3 arrived with mojo

2008-11-04 Thread Tom Whiteside
My KRX3 arrived today along with the narrow filters for my regular receiver
I had held off to have them matched with the subrx filters. My order date
was January 3rd, 2008. It all went together fine and the calibration went
smoothly. I was tuning around on 160M looking for a weak signal to try
those narrower filters and they really help... Was mostly concentrating on
the radio when I copied the callsign of the CQing station and it was OX3XR
which I needed.Bagged and tagged for #202.Now to go try diversity
reception!

[Elecraft] SS CW from N0SS

2008-11-04 Thread Tom Hammond
Well, I didn't do was well as I'd hoped, but it's not the fault of
the radio (K3).
The operator's getting a bit long in the tooth and was feeling the
effects of our

local radio club's Halloween Special Event operation from Frankenstein (MO) as
W0O. Even though I didn't stay the night (Friday night), I didn't
get much sleep

before the SS and I crapped out an hour before the end of the contest.

I was hoping to break the 100k point barrier this year, but just
didn't have the

stamina to get there.

I missed three sections: ND, MD, and NWT... to my chagrin. Was really hoping
for a Clean Sweep... one of the ARRL SS Brooms would have certainly looked nice
on the wall of my shack (IF you could find it).

Congratulations to KR2Q and several others who beat me quite handily
in class Q.

Station: N0SS
Class: Single Op QRP
QTH: MO
Operating Time (hrs): 21

Summary:
 Band QSOs

  160:
   80: 161
   40: 227
   20: 146
   15: 12
   10:

Total: 546 Sections = 77 Total Score = 84,084

Man... I hears a BUNCH of K3s in this year's SS... a number of folks took the
time to say, Great Signal... RIG??? When I replied K3, I very frequently
got the same response in reply...

I had no severe problems with my K3... the only one problem I did have was
self-inflicted in that I failed to set a CONFIG parameter to allow the K3 to
NOT disable RIT every time I change bands... there IS a CONFIG parm to allow
RIT to remain enables across band changes and I'd managed to forget that fact.

Well... I did have one other problem... the K3's filtering...

The filtering was so darn good that I tended to forget that I can't slide my
QRP signal up against a big QRO station (calling CQ) and then expect anyone
else to hear me when _I_ start to CQ as well... I seldom heard the other guy,
regardless of how strong he was, but his big signal overshadowed mine on the
far end almost every time I tried CQing.

Sometimes having great filtering might not be the best thing to have... heheh!

95% of my contacts were from operating SP as opposed to CQing... I
just started

at the bottom of a band and worked (almost) every station I called as I tuned
up the band. Then, I'd either go back down for another pass, or I'd
just to
another band and repeat the process. I'd guess that 80% of
my calls were

answered on the first call, even when I wasn't the only station calling.

I must thank (LOUDLY) all those who worked me and especially those who took
the time and effort to work me when I wasn't the strongest signal on the band,
and I'm certain there were many of those times.

Congratulations to Elecraft... from where I'm sitting, my K3 KICKS BUTT!

[Elecraft] K3 Beta firmware rev. 2.63: Switch-press tones

2008-11-04 Thread wayne burdick
K3 beta-test firmware revision 2.63 (with DSP rev 1.95) is now
available. Please send any problem reports to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
For instructions on how to load beta firmware, please see:

  http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm

Highlights:

* Audio tones on switch press (if CONFIG:SW TONE is set to ON)

* 1 kHz AM COARSE VFO TUNING RANGE ADDED

* Many new remote-control commands for use by PC software applications

Full details appear below.

73,
Wayne
N6KR

* * *

MCU 2.63 / DSP 1.95, 11-04-2008

* SWITCH TONES NOW AVAILABLE: If CONFIG:SW TONE is set to ON, tapping
or holding switches produces audio tones corresponding to the switch
state. This

supplements the normal tactile feedback of the switches.

* NORM SWITCH ALLOWED DURING TX: The “NORM” switch function (receive
passband normalization, e.g. 400 Hz in CW mode) can now be accessed
during
transmit. It takes effect after the K3 returns to receive mode. This is
especially useful for CW contest operation.

* COMPRESSION RANGE: Some operators asked for a higher “CMP” (speech
compression) setting to add “punch” under certain conditions. It can
now be
set from 0-40. We still recommend lower settings (0-20) for normal
operation.

* AM COARSE VFO TUNING RATES: Now 1, 5, 9, and 10 kHz.

* AM TRANSMIT: CONFIG:TXG VCE no longer affects AM transmit.

* SPLIT COMBINATIONS AVAILABLE: Cross-mode SPLIT operation is possible
with any combination of CW and SSB for VFO A and B. Same-mode SPLIT is
possible in all modes except PSK-D.

* CROSS-MODE SPLIT INDICATION: If you turn on SPLIT with VFO A and B in
different legal modes (e.g. CW and SSB), the K3 will remind you of
VFO B’s mode by flashing it (as well as the VFO B TX arrow). This
reminder

can be cancelled by tapping any switch, key, or PTT. The reason for the
“reminder” is that operators usually enter cross-mode split by
accident. If so,

cancel the reminder flash, then use BSET to change VFO B’s mode, or tap
AB to copy mode A to mode B.

For software developers:

* “FW$” ADDED (direct sub/VFO B filter bandwidth).

* “SM$” ADDED (direct sub-receiver S-meter read).

* DV (DIVERSITY) COMMAND: DV0 (off), DV1 (on). Also turns sub
off/on. To turn
on the sub but not diversity, use an “SWT” command (verify SUB status
with “DS”).

* COMMANDS AVAILBLE DURING BSET: IF, FA, FB, MD”, “MD$, and DT
(GET only). “FW” and “FW$” work in BSET except during diversity (TBD).

[Elecraft] future ham gear and Sound perception

2008-11-04 Thread Charles Harpole

Future ham gear, given our advancing ages, should include:

-larger and single function buttons for Parkinsons folks, and

everyone else, too.

-high freq audio boost and eq. and balance control to feed

more to one ear than the other.

-footswitch option is easy to add (feet work, hands do not).

-LARGE dial and large clear-contrast print on sw labels.

-Big RTTY/data readout on front pannel for those that can not

hear much anymore or for those whose speech is now impaired.

-Lots of automatic functions for often-repeated items.

Notice now few of these factors are on the K3, sad to say.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Beta firmware rev. 2.63: Switch-press tones

2008-11-04 Thread Joe Subich, W4TV

 * AM TRANSMIT: CONFIG:TXG VCE no longer affects AM transmit.

Is there now going to be a new AM carrier adjustment?

With TXG VCE lost on AM, my carrier output is well below
what it should be (and was with TXG VCE = 1.0 or 1.5 depending
on the which K3 I was using). With previous firmware the same
value of TXG VCE that equalized the SSB PEP output with CW
resulted in 22 to 28 watts of AM carrier when the power level
was set for 100 watts. With TXG VCE disabled in FW 2.64, I now
get only 14 to 15 Watts of carrier.

Re: Re[Elecraft] quest

2008-11-04 Thread -.-. --.-N3TU -.-. --.-

I found out that the hand mic from Elecraft works best on the EQ. I have
tried different studio style mics and it seems like the EQ goes wider with
the one from Elecraft. (MH2). The next best mic in second place was one of
the gamers mics with the foot pedal. The Kenwood and the ADI radio plugs
work on Elecraft if you use a headset with a foot pedal. It's amazing that I
can get more lows and highs from the little hand mic and had confirmed my
findings over air. The stations I've talked told me that the hand mic sounds
deeper, richer and more brilliant on the EQ than the other mics that were
adjusted again on the EQ again. I think the money was well spent on the hand
mic and have no regrets.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Analog S-meter

2008-11-04 Thread David Fleming
Whimsical is a good description. But yeah, why not?

You might want to get the most current version. A couple of folks reported that
the meter was off by 2-3 S-units. I think I've fixed that problem. I've also
added some anti-aliasing to the needle drawing routine in Windows. It's not so
jagged now. Now it looks almost as good on Windows as it does on the Mac...
Almost. :)

Tnx, Joel.

 David, W4SMT,

Thanks for that wonderful S-meter application!

I finally had an opportunity to install and run it today,
 and I think it is
absolutely fantastic! Thanks very much for sharing it with
 us.

While I know it is kinda whimsical, as an old boat anchor
 guy, and a
published admirer of the IC-7800 virtual analog S-meter, I
 do enjoy having
your meter on my PC, why not!

BTW, I'm running it with LP-Bridge
 (www.telepostinc.com) along with LP-PAN
and up to three other aps, so it doesn't add much to
 the overhead and is a
 very nice touch.

This is a great group with folk sharing their ideas and
 their
 accomplishments -- great to be a K3er!

I agree 100%,

However Wayne and Eric did state that the aim was to build a small easily
portable radio.

This has been exactly my experience too. The MH-2 is superb and regularly
receives unsolicited reports of excellent audio. My only criticism of it is
that the ptt spring is too strong!

I found out that the hand mic from Elecraft works best on the EQ. I have

the one from Elecraft.

Re: Re[Elecraft] quest

2008-11-04 Thread Erik N Basilier
When I received my MH-2, I almost put it up for sale because it is so bulky
in the
hand, especially with the non-removable hanger, and yes, the ptt button is a
bit of
a pain. Then I listened to it with the monitor and found that the sound
quality is

much better than the dynamic Kenwood mike I was comparing it to. The MH-2
stays! In fact in other audio applications I have always found that an
electret mike

is superior to a dynamic.
