RE: dB Gain -- was RE: [K3] [Elecraft] FLx GN Adding Db gain
Lots of questions. See some answers interspersed. All dB is relative -- that is, A is x dB louder or quieter than B. >And is a dB of voltage equivalent to a dB of power or an audio dB of >loudness? The equation for ALL dB numbers is dB = 20 log (V1/V2) or 10 log (P1/P2), where V is voltage and P is power. When you append a letter to it, the letter defines some reference condition that could be voltage, power in some impedance, acoustic loudness, etc. MANY references have been defined. dBm indicates dB referenced to 1 mW. dBmV is dB referenced to 1 mV. dBu indicates a reference to 0.78V dBV is referenced to 1 volt. What is a VU meter measuring? Voltage? It's actually measuring power if it's a true VU meter. 0VU is 1 mW in 600 ohms, and a VU meter has a carefully defined dynamic characteristic -- that is, the meter movement has its ballistic characteristics defined so that it indicates subjective loudness -- sort of. The standard for the VU meter goes back to the early days of broadcasting. VERY few modern meters calibrated in VU actually have this characteristic, which isn't cheap to build. AND -- most VU meters are calibrated so that a reading of 0 dB is +4VU or +8VU. Not only that, but a true VU meter includes rectifiers that combine with the ballistics to do a lot of smoothing so that they are reading the average power. Actual peaks of audio are typically 10-14 dB hotter than the indicated reading. Are you confused yet? :) >And why are our ears logarithmic anyway? That's the way God made us. >And every time I see a recording studio meter in a movie or TV clip, it's >seemingly always dancing to the pin, way over into the red. Why do they do >that? Broadcasters have long been in an eternal search for loudness. If the meter moves below the red there isn't enough processing, and someone is going to get fired. :) What does the red mean? In today's world, not much, because broadcast stations, like hams, use LOTS of signal processing -- compression, peak limiting, and other tricks -- that prevent those peaks from being much greater than the average voltage. If there were no processing, the red range of the meter would indicate that the waveform was getting close to clipping on peaks. 73, Jim K9YC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [K3] [Elecraft] K3 Obsolete?
Well, I just concluded eight-plus years as a senior tech writer at a major Silicon Valley semiconductor manufacturer, so I know a little about this phraseology. :-) "Not recommended for new designs" means: "We've got a ton of this generation in the bins, so we'll keep selling them to our big customers and distributors, if they really want them, until we run out. And that's not going to happen any time soon. But you know, this generation has always been a little buggy; some things never quite worked the way we expected. We'll continue to support it and all its errata and patches because we have to, but really, we're just not very keen about it any more. We've got a new, improved, more capable, more expensive generation out there on the market already, and another two generations beyond that are already in the development pipeline, so... well, not to put too fine a point on it, you know, but we'd really prefer that you buy our newer stuff. You'll find our support for the new stuff to be much livelier and more enthusiastic." "Obsolete" means: "Some of our distributors likely still have a lot of this old stuff back in their warehouses, so you can still get it. Cheap! And since nobody ever volunteers to go pawing through our public website to weed out all the obsolete app notes, you can probably still find stuff on it if you dig deep enough... But look, we're not making it any more, and we've shut down all real-time tech support for it. The engineers who designed it aren't even here anymore. If you call, our guys won't even talk to you about it. Basically, you're on your own. Sorry about that." That's about the gist of it. :-) Bill W5WVO - Original Message - From: "Mike S" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "Mark Bayern" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: "Ken_ke2n" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; Sent: Tuesday, November 11, 2008 6:49 PM Subject: Re: [K3] [Elecraft] K3 Obsolete? > At 08:40 PM 11/11/2008, Mark Bayern wrote... > > > it should be this one for the DSP > > > > > > http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tms320vc33.html > > > >That page _DOES_NOT_ say the chip is 'obsolete', it says 'Product is > >Not Recommended for New Design'. > > Same thing. [Elecraft] K3 not keying PW-1 amp
I finally unboxed my PW-1, after it's repair by ICOM, and plugged in the K3. I connected the KEY-OUT to the SEND2 connection on my PW-1, connected the K3 to INPUT2, set the power down to 25w, powered up the ICOM PW-1, pushed in AMP/PROTECT so it was GREEN, the K3 is in CW VOX mode, keyed the K3, and the PW-1 only reflected 25w output. The PW-1 TRANSMIT light never lit up which says I'm not keying the PW-1. I have the K3 PW-1 negative ALC mod installed, but did not connect it up to the PW-1. I ran the PW-1 with the K3 from last December, through June of this year, configured this same way with no problems, 25w of drive will output around 1100w on 40m CW. I don't need the ALC mod but it is a nice safety net if I actually connect up the ALC connection on the PW-1. Last year, I had the ICOM756ProIII connected to input 1and the ACC1 interface to the PW-1 was connected, which basically supplies power to the PW-1 antenna switch when the amp is in the off position. The PW-1 Is in the INPUT1&2 position. Does it make a difference that there is no transceiver connected to INPUT1 and ACC1. That is the only real difference. I know that there are a few (more than a few) K3 owners with PW-1 amps. I am probably doing something wrong but it sure isn't obvious to me. My firmware level is 2.38 on the K3. I guess I could try plugging into the Input 1, send 1 inputs on the PW-1 to see if that makes any difference. The PW-1 manual does not indicate that a transceiver has to be connected to the input1 connections on the PW-1. [K3] [Elecraft] more Obsolete?
Ok - trying to retrace my steps on the internet search the TMS is NRND - not obsolete (yet) the "TLV320ACC23" as indicated on the schematic was not found - I just looked at the first few chips and THEY were all obsolete. I am guessing that the schematic has a typo and the device is TLV320AIC23 (K3 DSP IF: CODECS drawing 2004051101) this part is also NRND, but not obsolete. Sorry for the confusion - my "lifetime buy" comment was incorrect (applied to a different part) Ken I am not worried; my 25 year old ICOM with all its proprietary chips still works. Check back with me on the K3 in, say, September of 2033 - I'll bet it still works -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-Obsolete--tp1485486p1488045.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Digital Mode
Iain, Thanks for the information and I will print this out and follow it. I need to get the cables. Greg Date: Mon, 10 Nov 2008 23:46:01 -0800 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Digital Mode Hi OM, Long answer to a short question (and it's late, so apologies if any of it doesn't make sense)... To transmit in digital modes with HRD + DM780, you'll probably want to connect the RS232 port on the K3 to a serial port on your PC, as well as audio, but you can start of with receive-only with just an audio connection from the "line out" of the K3 to the input on your computer's sound card. A stereo audio cable with 3.5mm (1/8") jack plugs on both ends will do. Start up DM780 (not HRD) and see if you get noise (different colours) in the waterfall at the bottom (with the K3 on, obviously). If not, maybe you have more than one sound card. From the "Tools" menu, choose "Options", then click on the "SoundCard" tab, and choose the right device and source (line in, mic - whatever you have connected to). You may need to bring up "Soundcard", from the "View" menu, and unmute the RX device and set the volume. When you get noise in the waterfall, tune to a digital mode frequency (e.g. 14.070) and look for signals to decode. Choose the appropriate mode (right above the waterfall) and then click on the waterfall where you see a signal, and it should be decoded as text for you. I've never used Olivia, so can't help with specifics there, but you should be able to find it in "Modes". You could start off with BPSK31 or RTTY, as those are more common. When you want to transmit, you'll probably want to make the serial connection for automatic keying of the radio. You may be able to do it with VOX instead, but I haven't tried that. There are other benefits to making the serial connection - you can see the actual frequency you're using in the software, quickly QSY to saved frequencies, center the signal you want with couple of mouse-clicks, etc. If you don't have real serial ports, you'll need a USB-to-serial adapter, like the KUSB. The "auto-find" thing might work, but I prefer to do things explicitly. First, on the K3, set CONFIG:RS232 to "38400 b". Then launch HRD. Specify "Elecraft", "K3", the serial port that the K3 is connected to, and speed 38400. If you're using a built-in serial port, it's probably COM1 or COM2. If not, right-click on "My Computer", choose "Properties", then "Hardware" then "Device Manager", then double-click on "Ports" and look for it there. When HRD connects successfully, it should display the current VFO A and B frequencies, amongst other things. You'll then need to start the IP server. In HRD, to go "Tools" -> "IP Server", then check "Start server when HRD starts" and click "Start". Now you can go back to DM780, and configure it to use HRD for keying the radio. In its "Tools" menu, choose "Options", then click on the "PTT" tab, and select "via Ham Radio Deluxe". Then go to "View" -> "Radio", and click on "Connect to HRD", if it's not already displaying the current VFO A freqency. Set the mode on the K3 to "DATA", and set "DATA MODE" to "DATA A" (hold the "AFX" button, then turn the VFO B knob to select that). You'll need another 3.5mm stereo audio cable to connect the output from your PC's sound card to the "line in" of the K3. Set "MENU:MIC SEL" to "Line in" on the K3. Now you're ready for a test transmission. Put the K3 into "TX TEST" mode (hold "MODE ^"), then click on "Send" in DM780. Adjust "MIC" (line in gain) on the K3 until you see 5 bars on the ALC meter. You may need to adjust the "Soundcard" "TX" settings in HRD to get it right. Click "Stop" to end, and turn off "TX TEST" mode. Then you're all set up and ready for digital. Simple, huh? ~Iain / K6IAM -.-. --.-N3TU -.-. --.- wrote: > I'm new to digital. I just downloaded Digital Master 780 so I can run Olivia > on MARS. Also included in that package is Ham Radio Deluxe. RE: [Elecraft] [K3] Setting Filter Gain in KRX3
You can use the K3 Utility filter configuration tool to verify the filter settings for both main and sub receiver. From the K3 Utility's "Configuration" tab, click "Edit Crystal Filters" and click on the Main / Sub Receiver radio button at the bottom left of the dialog. The main receiver filter settings are distinct from the sub receiver filter settings. Setting the main receiver's filters does not set the configuration of the sub receiver filters. I loaned my K3 to K7RI to get ready for Sweepstakes or I'd try to describe how to view and set the sub receiver filter configuration from the K3's front panel. These issues matter only if you're a contester or serious DX chaser. For more casual operation it doesn't matter much. There are mods for #1 and #2 that improve things significantly, and they're pretty easy to do. One of the more powerful solutions to # 1 involves cutting some circuit board traces. Bottom line -- the K2 and K2/100 are excellent CW rigs and good (but not great) SSB rigs. The KSB2 IS a good plug-in, and well worth doing, but don't expect it to be competitive in a serious contest. For other operation you'll be quite happy with it. 73, Jim Brown K9YC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [K3] [Elecraft] K3 Obsolete?
oops - I see I put in the wrong link (although one of the reply-ee's found it) it should be this one for the DSP http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tms320vc33.html the D/A chip that I was referring to is the TI one too ... also tried to find the the TI D/A chip on Mouser and Digikey and got the obsolete designation as well. I am not surprised that there is a big batch of the TMS chips coming. That's what they do: announce upcoming obsolescence, get an idea of who wants how many and then make one final big batch and no more after. I doubt anything in this fast moving technology is designed for a long product life. Its basically cell phone technology that is driving the market and they try to sell me a cell phone every two years. I believe that unless I am unlucky the chips in my K3 will last longer than I will. However, I have never bought a rig before that had obsolete parts in it when I opened the box. But that is the way things are these days... [K3] [Elecraft] FLx GN Adding Db gain
I have the full range of filters, from 13 KHz to 200 Hz and found that there isn't enough adjustment range to get them all exactly equalized. That is, with the 2.7 KHz set to 0 (minimum possible) and the 200 Hz set to +8dB (maximum possible) the 200 Hz was still 2 dB down from the 2.7KHz. So what I did was to equalize the three filters that I use for CW (my primary mode of operation) at one value and equalize the 13KHz and 2.7KHz filters at another value (used for MW, SW listening, etc). This seems to work out quite well in practice. Here is what I ended up with. The first column is the variation in dB with the AGC off. The second is with the AGC on. I used a signal generator and the K3 built-in audio voltmeter for the measurement. Filterw/o AGCw AGC 13 K -0.5 -0.1 2.7 K 0 0 1.0 K -2.1 -0.4 500 H -1.5 -0.3 200 H -2.0 -0.4 73 ... dB Gain -- was RE: [K3] [Elecraft] FLx GN Adding Db gain
At the risk of being pedantic, the correct unit is the deciBel, one tenth of a Bel, and the correct abbreviation is dB (not Db). The Bel is a unit of change in loudness and is named after Alexander Graham Bell. Because the way humans hear is logarithmic (as is our perception of light), the Bel (and the deciBel) are the log of the ratio of sound levels, and are translated into the log of power levels and voltage levels corresponding to that loudness change. 73, Jim K9YC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] K3 Summary of brick issue
OK. Let me try to break it into the sequence of how you get here. You get a K3 and it's pre loaded with a certain MCU and DSP, etc.. My K3 was loaded with 2.57 MCU and the corresponding DSP. Time past. I got a straight-DB9 serial cable on Friday (Frys) and proceeded to use it to test the latest K3 Utility (whatever version the latest is) that my PC (Dell D600 Latitude Notebook) was able to talk to the K3. It was. I could see my filter data, etc.. Now came the new firm ware: I wanted to try the beta release, 2.63 I believe it was. So I ran the Utility, tested the connection. I set the Folder to store firmware. I left the checkbox checked "copy new files from Elecraft" because I had none yet, this would be the first upgrade so I needed the files copied from their ftp server. I pressed Send all Firmware to K3. It downloaded the firmware, and loaded it on the K3. No errors. No resynchronization warnings, etc.. All good. Time past. I noticed a behavior with my amp-key line that I didn't notice on 2.57 so I wanted to regress the condition with the original 2.57 to make sure it wasn't firmware, but perhaps the amp or something else. I had to strike firmware off the list given that 2.63 was fairly new beta firmware. So I tried to reload 2.57 but I had no copy and none is on the Elecraft web site, hence my request earlier for a copy. I got a copy (thanks!) and put it into a folder. I re-ran the utility, set the folder to look there. I pressed Send Firmware to K3 ** ** = mistake When this happend, I began to see scores of warnings "Resynchronized at load address x0X, response "N", sent 67b, # attempts.. etc.. The last Log entry in the Activity Log was: 18:55:42 MCU block write failed at address x0X 18:55:42 MCU programming failed. Verify file source and version. Turn the K3 off and back on, then re-try the firmware load. 18:55:42 MCU programming failed. Verify file source and version. Turn the K3 off and back on, then re-try the firmware load. 18:55:45 Ready So I tried to restart the K3 and re-load the MCU. Restarting the K3 so a new load can be done is itself tricky as I learned. If you cycle power, and restart the K3 you need to wait for some reason until the existing firmware bootloader (or whatever the exec is on the K3 that runs) finishes it's business before the Utility will even succeed in "test-connection." Once the test-connection passes, I re-attempted (2nd attempt for the MCU load) and received the same error as before. I realized too late that I forgot to uncheck the box "Copy new files from Elecraft". After I figured out the bone-headed mistake, I tried to start over by trying to load the latest from Elecraft (2.46 is the latest regular release). After some painful waiting and hundreds of warnings about the Resynchronization I was finally able to load 2.57 last night. This morning, I got a copy of 2.65 (yes .65) from Elecraft and tried to load it with my knowledge of how the Utility works (Uncheck "COpy new files" and press Check Versions Now) before trying to "Send all Firmware to K3." Since this morning, I've been unable to successfully load a MCU. The cable is new and I tested it. The serial port is on a computer that has shown no issues (I use it with ACLog), so I'm just a little perplexed. I'm convinced I pooched it, but I don't know exactly what I could have done to continue the badness given I am using (I hope) the Utility the way it was designed. The folder already contained files from a different version MCU. So I was asking the Utility to Send All Firmware, and what it did (since the checkbox was checked) is first download (into the folder already populated) and then begin the MCU LD. Thus, I had no clue that the data it downloaded clobbered some data that was already in the folder, or maybe not. I really don't kn

The issue is not any of the following: 1. Firmware version 2. Utility version 3. Cable, serial port, or communication over RS-232. The issue is this: In a nutshell, user error. But the user (me in this case!) was un-aware of the rules to follow: The Utility was directed by the user to move certain firmware files to the K3 and the configuration of the Utility interface was not concordiant with the version of the firmware files. In short, I did not realize I had left the check-box checked above the button "Check new version". After a few attempts, I was able to make the Utility load without error. It was nervous for me because being firmware, seeing errors on the load raised the hair on the back of my neck because things like that can often render the platform a brick. I knew in the back of my mind that Wayne and Lyle had made the process robust and enough bootstrap code should/would be on the K3 to bring up the executable on the K3 to handle a new MCU DL. In the documentation there are two methods described for resetting the K3 if the MCU load fails: 1 a) pull the power b) Hold the POWER button and wait about 10 seconds then go to step 3. 2 a) pull the power b) HOLD HI/LO while TAP POWER and wait about 2 seconds then go to step3 3 a) Re try loading the MCU - starting the Utility, re-confirming communication to the K3, and then choosing the firmware, etc.. The resynchronization error is a loading error by the Utility getting in the weeds because of the aforementioned configuration of the firmware data and the Utility settings (AFAIK). I've been trying to think of the use-case for what caused it, but it becomes nebulous because I don't know enough about the protocol used by the Utility and the meaning of the data in the S-code files. A block diagram of how the Utility works would be great. How it parses the first file, and etc. Why was it so difficult to get the MCU load to work after the Re-synch error? Method #1 did not work for me to re-try the MCU load. I was only able to get the K3 to succeed in testing the Serial port after a failed MCU load if I used method #2 to re-start the K3. The good news is that I was able to reload the MCU w/o Resync errors, but it was that moment of "uhh oh", you know what I mean? If I could make a suggestion to the documentation team about this: The documentation of the error messages in the Utility doesn't seem to cover this error. I searched the Help file on the Utility. There also could be a little more treatment in the K3 manual over loading MCU and fool proof steps for loading in these use cases: 1. Upgrading to a newer MCU 2. Downgrading to an older MCU And, for the support team, I'd suggest putting much more online with respect to past versions of the MCU. 2.57 isn't _that_ old, right? It's not on the web site in a downloadable form, unless you know the secret URL. All is well that ends well. -jeff ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] KEY OUT (K3)
Iain, As far as I can recall, the amp keying during TX TEST is intentional - it allows one to activate all the controls as though switching to transmit, but no RF is transmitted - it is quite intuitive to me, it is a TEST of all the transmit control elements (internal to the K3 and external as well), but without producing any RF. The situation of KEYOUT being activated by a key or paddle action when in CW PTT is IMHO not the proper action - PTT is PTT - and by that I mean that one must press PTT before anything happens. In CW PTT, many have wanted sidetone to be produced when the key is activated, and all have wanted no RF to be transmitted - those things happen, but also the KEYOUT signal becomes active with keying too, and I do not believe that should happen - we have TX TEST to do testing that requires the KEYOUT to be active. 73, Don W3FPR. Iain MacDonnell - K6IAM wrote: WILLIS COOKE wrote: I may be missing something, but when I close the key in the PTT mode I get a sidetone with no output. If I am setting parameters in my K3 I want the amplifier to be either in off or Standby. (On my amp Standby just removes the relay voltage in the keying circuit.) RE: [K3] [Elecraft] FLx GN Adding Db gain
The value in the table in the K3 Utility Help for the Crystal Filter Configuration for the 400 Hz filter is 7 dB. This is a starting point. Your individual filter may vary from that. The values in this table came from the Elecraft manufacturing lab. These are the starting gain compensation values that Elecraft uses when it prepares a factory-built K3. After these starting values are set, then the filter gain compensation is further adjusted (using a voltmeter across the speaker and a signal generator, I think) to deal with filter sample variations. 7 db from the table in K3 Utility Help seems pretty close to the 6-7 db you mentioned in your findings. I agree that the value in the Owner's Manual isn't consistent with this. [Elecraft] K3 Carrying Case
I just received my padded, custom K3 carrying case from Rose Kopp, N7HKW. It is a work of art. My wife Heather, N7DZU -- no mean seamstress herself -- had only positive to things to say after she examined it. If you have any need at all for a way to transport your K3 and protect it while doing so, you might consider one these covers. Note that this is a carrying case, not a shipping container! Rose has no website, but you can email her at [EMAIL PROTECTED] for details. 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 carrying case?
Chris - I use a Samsonite L25 case. It is just large enough for the K2, a Kenwood MC43 mic, Palm paddle, a folding headset, user manual, AC adapter/charger, some basic antenna materials, logsheets, and cables. Case has Velcro straps to secure radio, several pouches, zippers everywhere. I have used mine to carry the K2 all over the country. Barry, K6RM, got to me first and explained that the MIC gain separately set the gain for front panel, rear panel, and line in, depending on what you had chosen in MIC SEL. It works like gang busters now. Thanks Barry, and thanks to all who replied to me about this technical problem in my mind. It all makes sense once Barry broke the code for me. Re: [Elecraft] KEY OUT
Suppose there is not problem with PTT or computer controll. What is sometimes problem is what is happened after hitting the Key in pure PTT mode. This is acting as activating KEY OUT port. That´s it. Maybe there is way how to interpret "Key closed" when K3 is not in VOX or in TX mode by external PTT (line or command) or XMIT/TUNE button by firmware. IMHO when K3 in PTT mode it will be better "no action" if the Key is pressed when no PTT is present (external, by command or XMIT/TUNE button). Simply nothing, no KEY OUT,...like KEY port disconnected. Maybe I missed something, maybe I am completely wrong but on any of my other rig(-s) never had any problem with activating connected systems (transverters, relays) by hitting the Key when PTT not active. " I never seen any explanation why K3 is doing by mentined way, what is advantege and purpose, reading list and doc very often but still not clear to me (and maybe others as well:-)) Time to time this topic is "open" without this explanation and again goes for sleep :-) 73! Thanks to all who responded to this thread. I have K3 1433 with 2.8K and 400 Hz. filters. I boosted the 400 gain from 2 to 6 and the difference was amazing. With the NR the CW is now EASILY cleaned up at VERY narrow bandwidths! I thought it was good before but now I see why contesters and DXers would love this rig. Re: [K3] [Elecraft] K3 Obsolete?
The K3 is designed for a long production life. The use of functional circuit modules, like the DSP board or the synthesizer board, allows us to upgrade and improve and support the radio with a simple board swap. To my knowledge there are *no* components that are on a "lifetime buy" or "no longer in production" status. You can be certain that we monitor the supply chain very closely, and that we want to ensure a long life for our premier product! 73, Lyle KK7P ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 Summary of brick issue
I was somewhat nervous about the error message I sent so I had not thought through my email message clearly. Re: [K3] [Elecraft] FLx GN Adding Db gain
FLx GN I've bought a 400hz eight pole CW filter. Although the manual recommends 1-2 db for a setting, I see that the adjustment can be higher. What setting are most CW operator using? I measured the gain change going from 450 Hz to 400 HZ (where the rig changes from the 2.8 filter to the 400 Hz filter) by turning the AGC off and using WSJT v 4 signal power measurement function. You can also use the AFV/dBV function in the radio to directly measure the filter insertion loss. I won't give you a step by step procedure. That is left as an exercise for you. I will suggest that AGC ought to be OFF, the signal you tune in ought to be steady with a good SNR, and that the K3 has an internal oscillator around 49.380 MHz. It would be easy to change the logic to be: not_receive AND transmit I would be very careful about this, because of the need for the key out to be activated a few ms. before RF appears and to stay active until after the RF is gone. This is necessary to prevent hot-switching of amplifier relays which at best will create key clicks and at worst will destroy the relays. -- 73, Vic, K2VCO Fresno CA http://www.qsl.net/k2vco ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3: new to wish-list - KEY OUT setting in menu (to be more like PTT OUT) for CW PTT mode
Hello Elcrafters, it was tested that KEY OUT port (rear panel of K3) is not in CW PTT mode acting as PTT OUT (how was wrongly supposed to be) and this was confirmed by Elecraft as intentional behavior but that if there will be some feedback/requests from customers, maybe will be possible to set this in Menu sometimes later. You have my vote - I have already sent email to them on this. At first it seemed that they did not understand. However, I am not holding my breath on this one. The KEY OUT switch (FET) is from the inverted state of the main receive control line. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Filters, Shift Control and RTTY
If the other station has AFC on in their software, they tend to wander around a bit. I tend NOT to run AFC if I am S&P, as I line right up on them. If I am running and there is activity around me, it is hard to run AFC, as my signal then wanders around. But if someone comes up a bit off, or I have some room around me, I then run it. It then aligns my frequency with theirs. Its a lot like CW contests, where so many do not zero you before they call. David Wilburn NM4M http://www.nm4m.com Ron Kenwood wrote: I have been playing in the WAE RTTY contest. I am mainly using the 250Hz roofing filter with DSP bandwidth at 300 Hz. I occasionally use the 1.8kHz filter with DSP set at about 500 Hz. In either configuration, I find that I have to use the shift control to center signals in the bandpass. Not sure if this is a hardware or software thing, but in any case, I have two issues. One is that the minimum shift value is too large to accomplish what I want to do at the narrow bandwidth, and when I try to use the dual bandpass filter it appears that shift is disabled. Am I missing something(highly likely), or do I have to request that changes be added to the wish list? Re: [Elecraft] K2 is angry with me
Colin, The most common cause of the 'Loss Of Sidetone' problem is that you inadvertently changed the sidetone source in the menu. If you tapped the DISPLAY button while adjusting the sidetone level, that would do the deed. Bring up the ST L menu entry Press EDIT to edit the parameter Tap DISPLAY to toggle the sidetone source between U6-25 and U8-4 - you may have to tap DISPLAY a few times to get it right When you hear sidetone stop tapping DISPLAY and tap MENU twice to exit the menu. For your future operating convenience, do not change the sidetone level to match the signal when spotting - instead change the AF Gain to bring the desired signal to approximately the level you have the sidetone set to. The sidetone level is not changed with the AF gain setting, so operating like that is possible. 73, Don W3FPR Colin Whitmore wrote: So, I think that my K2 is angry with me for buying a K3!
