Re: [Elecraft] K3 Squelch
The article that was claimed to be unreadable was a top posted article quoting a top posted article. Top posting was not an issue here. The actual issue, was that, at least in the digest, a number of articles were posted with Content-Type: text/plain headers, but containing invalid HTML, which, on any reasonably compliant email program display as raw HTML. However Don's real issue seems to have been with people who fail to trim properly. Top posting almost guarantees that people will fail to prune, which is one of the reasons why the digests are so large. If you have to exit after each email or terminate reading by deleting, top postings hides this problem. If you are reading the digest, or have an email reader that pages across message boundaries, failure to prune forces one to wade through the whole back thread and, particular in digests, can make it difficult to find the next thread. IE's attach original mode is even worse, as Thunderbird displays the attached message as though it were an independent article, so one has to look very carefully to find the next real article. Incidentally, I consider email posted with only HTML to be a strong spam indicator and all postings with HTML variants to be newbie indicators. They also contribute to the high number of bytes on this list. For once, I am deliberately posting this badly, quoting the entire back thread including footers added by the reflector. Unfortunately, as I'm replying from a MIME digest, I can't add a copy of the footers added on the way out to me. If you can surmise from that comment that *top posting* is important to me on an email reflector with as much traffic as we have here, then you are correct - I just don't have the available time nor patience to scroll down through a posting to find what has been added. Ha, ha! Jon, you might want to save that well chewed I.C. As a 10 year old kid fascinated by radio, my sable collie decided to taste the binding of my prized, hardbound ARRL handbook - my first radio book that I read so often I can almost recite whole paragraphs today. He made a pretty mess of one corner, chewing through the cover into the glue along the spine. I patched it up with some cellophane tape and probably glared at him a lot for a long time, but he was my best bud throughout my teenage years. He died a decade later while I was away in the Army. Half a century later I still have that book sitting on the shelf, and every time I see or hold it I remember my old friend. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- How embarrassing is this? Re: [Elecraft] K2 standard mic input = kenwood circuit - - what mic do you recommend?
Duane, - that is not quite correct. The K2 has a microphone configuration header which can be wired for many microphone pinouts. If all the pins are jumpered straight across, it will be the Elecraft microphone pinout at the microphone jack. The Elecraft mic pinout is *not* equal to Kenwood - it differs on pins 5 and 6. However, if the Kenwood microphone is of the unamplified dynamic type, it will not use pins 5 and 6 and will work fine with the K2 straight across plugging of the mic configuration header. That is what compatibilty means - most popular Kenwood mics will work, but not *all* Kenwood mics. The K2 microphone pinout can be wired to use just about any common amateur microphone. The instructions are in the KSB2 manual. Note: the K3 has a fixed microphone pinout - it is the Elecraft pinout, no microhone configuration header in the K3. 73, Don W3FPR dw wrote: I understand that the K2s default mic input is designed for a Kenwood type mic. Re: [Elecraft] K3: 30M signal
Ken, Not heard here, but I find a very weak signal on 10106.75. Since it gets very weak when I remove the antenna - and is very strong if I just use a wire to the antenna jack center conductor, it is something in the shack (my antennas are more than 100 feet away). I suspect something associated with the Ethernet cabling in the house, but I am not going to shut it down to check. The 'fast-tuning birdie removal tool' will not work on real signals (those do not 'fast-tune'). 73, Don W3FPR Ken Kopp wrote: I have a strong carrier on 10.106.20 (zero-beat) signal that's been present since I built K3 (S/N 56). Re: [Elecraft] [KX1]Output Power Measurement
You might use a diode, such as a 1N914, 1N4148 or (preferably) a 1N5711 to rectify the voltage developed across the load and then measure the DC out of the diode. With a high Z load such as a DMM, the DC voltage will be close to the RF peak voltage. A standard DMM, even a good one, will not provide usable results above a few hundred KHz, unless it's a specialized instrument intended for RF measurements. Re: [Elecraft] [KX1]Output Power Measurement
Ron, Use a diode detector. A 1N4148 diode will do fine up to about 12 watts. Connect the anode of the diode to the center conductor of your coax *at* the dummy load (use a coax TEE adapter if you have no other access). From the cathode end of your diode, connect a 0.01 uF capacitor to the shield side of the coax. Your DMM leads connect across the capacitor. Measure the forward voltage of the diode with your DMM if it has that function, otherwise, assume that the diode forward voltage is 0.6 volts. With this probe, the DVM will read the peak RF voltage. You can calculate the power from the DMM reading as follows: The peak voltage across the resistor is equal to the DVM reading plus the diode forward voltage, so add them. You may then calculate the RMS value of the result above. Then square that result and divide by the resistance. Or you may accept (or derive) the formula will be as follows with no intermittent RMS calculation. P = (Vdvm+Vdiode)^2/2R = (Vdvm+Vdiode^2/100 for a 50 ohm dummy load OR, if you assume the diode drop is 0.6 volts P=(Vdvm+0.6)^2/100 73, Don W3FPR Ron Bower wrote: I have searched the archives and have not been able to find a definitive answer. Re: [Elecraft] [KX1]Output Power Measurement
Ron, I just went through this scenario. With the help of Don Wilhelm I was able accurately measure my power out on my KX1 and K3. I first used a homebrew load with free resistors given away at a club meeting. They only worked at low frequencies. At 20 meters the SWR to far off to be of use! I bought an Elecraft DL1 because it uses one of the correct types of resistors for this application and it has a built in VDC test point! The only thing to be wary of is that the DL1 test point is at the 25 ohm point in the series of resistors!!! Don's formula (and mine) differs from that found in the DL1 manual. Elecraft: P(in watts) = ((Volts * 1.414) +(.15))^2 / 50 Don: P(in watts) = ((Volts) + (diode drop))^2 / 25 Jack: P(in watts) = (((Volts) + (diode drop) * 2)) / (square root of 2)))^2 / 50 There are 3 points to be aware of. 1. Use the square root of 2 and not the 1.414 figure. 2. Measure your diode drop. 3. Combine the drop with the VDC before doing any other calculations. 4. If you do not use Don's formula, DIVIDE by the square root of 2. The Schottky diode in my DL1 measures .330 mv. A 1N34a (germanium diode) has a drop of about .3 volts. A Schottky's drop is a little more but offers more linearity! In any case, the VDC voltage must be divided by the square root of 2 to get the RMS. In other words the VDC(0-Peak) is 1.414(approximately) times the RMS voltage If you measure the VDC at the 50 ohm point then my formula becomes: P(in watts) = ((VDC + (diode drop)) / (square root of 2))^2 /50 After getting an accurate measurement of my KX1's power I found that the KX1 ATU was showing values that were too high. By adjusting C9 and R1 I was able to get the KX1 and the DL1 to agree! BTW, I also used the DL1 to calibrate my K3 at low power. Now the K3, my DL1 and my Versa Tuner V all agree! -Original Message- .snip.
